Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nature offers the best example of composite systems with exceptional characteristics and a high-performance architecture. For instance, Nacre, a well-defined combination of organic and inorganic composite materials, facilitates the protection of soft body species from natural predators and threats. Similarly, polymer composites are also a combination of the matrix phase and dispersed phase to enhance the fundamental property of the polymer matrix phase. The application of polymers and their related composites are witnessed in every aspect of our life, and polymer composites have been one of the most highly discussed, debated, and researched topics in recent years. In the last decade alone, the demand for new materials with characteristics of self-healing, multifunctional adaptive structures, light weight, tunable surface characteristics, as well as environmentally sustainable materials has grown exponentially. This is because advanced polymer composite materials offer a considerable advantage over polymeric systems, micro/nanofillers, and chopped or continuous fiber. Although such systems are used extensively, however, developing polymeric composites which are low-cost, lightweight, and can be used in high-performance, multifunctional systems equally applicable in different levels of applications is still challenging. This Special Issue will provide researchers with the opportunity to highlight the importance of advanced composites as per the current requirements, their processing challenges, and possible contemporary and future applications. This Special Issue is not limited to synthetic or natural polymeric systems but also extended to green composite systems to meet the requirements of a sustainable and circular economy.

In particular, the topic of interest includes but is not limited to

  • Polymer composites in electronic mobility
  • Polymer composites in aviation and aerospace applications
  • Multifunctional polymer composites in artificial intelligence
  • Sustainable green composites
  • Fire-retardant lightweight composites for battery applications
  • Biomimicked polymers and their applications

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
