Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, have emerged as transformative technologies with applications in, for example, military, civilian, commercial, and scientific domains. With their high mobility and low cost, UAVs have found a wide range of use cases and scenarios extending beyond 5G and 6G. However, the large-scale deployment of UAVs requires reliable and secure wireless communications that ensure the safe control and operation of UAVs. This Special Issue focuses on the cutting-edge advancements and challenges within the realm of UAV communications. It encompasses a broad spectrum of research areas, including the development of communication protocols, networking technologies, and the integration of UAVs with other communication systems such as the IoT and vehicular networks. This issue also addresses the challenges of securing UAV communications, ensuring data integrity and privacy in aerial networks. By bringing together the latest research, this Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state and future directions of wireless communication in UAV systems, highlighting the technological advancements and practical applications that are shaping this dynamic area of research.

Topics of interest in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • 5G and 6G technologies for UAV systems;
  • UAV communication protocols and network optimization;
  • UAV trajectory optimization for communication;
  • Machine learning and AI applications in UAV communication;
  • UAV-enabled wireless communication networks;
  • UAV-assisted wireless power transfer (WPT);
  • Detection, security, and communication for UAVs;
  • Physical layer techniques for UAV communications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
