Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the rapid development of communication technologies, modern vehicles are equipped with complex electronic sensor systems, onboard computers, and wireless transceivers to collect and process huge amount of data while exchanging information in real time with their human drivers, pedestrians, other vehicles, and environments through vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, where X stands for device, vehicle, and infrstructure, etc. These connected vehicles have recently given birth to a new distributed network, which is called the “Internet of Vehicles” (IoV), and has attracted a large amount of attention from academia and industry. The advent of IoV enables many new applications and services, such as driving safety assistance, real-time video analytics, smart parking, and traffic and fleet management. While advacning the conventional vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), the IoV is expected to eventually evolve into the “Internet of Autonomous Vehicles” by integrating with new technologies, such as 5G/6G, edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and blockchain. However, there are numerous challenges and opportunities that need to be explored to realize such future IoV systems, such as vehicles’ dynamic topology, heterogeneous and limited computing and networking resources at the network edge, and data security and privacy. This Special Issue welcomes contributions dealing with various technical aspects of IoV, including architectures, enabling technologies, and advanced applications, as well as other relevant topics in the field.

Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • IoV architectures and protocols;
  • Cloud/edge computing for IoV;
  • Computation offloading and resource management for IoV;
  • Advanced communication technologies for IoV;
  • Autonomous driving assisted by edge computing-enabled IoV;
  • AI/ML algorithms for IoV;
  • Blockchain-based IoV;
  • Digital twin designs for IoV;
  • Advanced IoV applications;
  • Test-bed and simulation tools for IoV.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
