Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Electromagnetic metasurfaces are two-dimensional analogs of three-dimensional metamaterials, characterized by their ability to manipulate electromagnetic waves in novel ways. Unlike traditional optical and microwave devices that rely on bulk materials, metasurfaces exploit periodic or aperiodic patterns of subwavelength unit cells to achieve their functionality. These unit cells, often designed as resonant structures, can be engineered to exhibit desired electromagnetic responses, such as phase shifts, amplitude modifications, or polarization control. The research into multifunctional electromagnetic metasurfaces is of critical importance due to their potential to revolutionize a variety of applications. Unlike single-function devices, multifunctional metasurfaces can simultaneously handle multiple tasks—such as beam shaping, filtering, and sensing—within a single platform. This capability is particularly valuable in fields where space and weight constraints are paramount, such as in aerospace and portable electronics.

The aim of this Special Issue is to explore and showcase the latest advancements and research developments in the field of metasurfaces, with a specific focus on their reconfigurability, tunability, and multifunctionality. The Special Issue seeks to 1. advance design techniques; 2. explore material innovations; 3. demonstrate practical applications; 4. integrate interdisciplinary approaches; and 5. identify future directions.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Reconfigurable, tunable, and multifunctional metasurfaces.
  • Metasurface absorber/rasober designs.
  • Electromagnetic interference mitigation.
  • Low radar cross-section antennas/antenna arrays.
  • Application of metasurfaces/metamaterials/FSSs in microwave device design.
  • Metamaterials integrated on a chip.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
