Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
What did literature contribute to how emotions were imagined, experienced, and performed in the later Middle Ages? Reflecting on literary texts as both imaginative and imaginary, how do medieval texts seek to mobilize emotions, and what roles do the affective responses texts generate play in shaping social life? What insights can be gained in attending to the place of emotion in medieval textual production, from the use of emotive images in memory training as the foundation of rhetorical composition, to the affective qualities of the book as material object?
We invite abstracts focusing on the relationship between medieval literature and emotion in the later Middle Ages. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Genre and the construction of emotional repertoires
- Continuities between medieval representations of emotion and theories of distributed cognition
- Emotional ecologies
- Emotional communities
- Emotional practices
- Affect and the haptics of the book
