Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Food insecurity is a growing public health concern.

In line with the WHO European Region recommendations on maternal and infant health and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, this Special Issue focuses on food insecurity during life stages characterized by particular vulnerability: from pregnancy to early childhood.

Food insecurity during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes, such as gestational diabetes, severe forms of anxiety, maternal anemia, preterm birth and birth defects. Some of these complications are linked with longer-term poor health consequences for the child, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, suggesting an intergenerational impact of food insecurity.

In addition, experiencing food insecurity in the neonatal period and in the early years of life is particularly detrimental, since early childhood is a crucial phase of physical, cognitive and social-emotional development.

In order to expand the knowledge in the field, all types of research—including qualitative, observational, and interventional studies, as well as primary research and research reviews (e.g., systematic reviews with meta-analyses, qualitative systematic reviews with meta-synthesis and scoping reviews)—are welcome. Due the interdisciplinary ramifications of the topic, original contributions from other disciplines are also encouraged.
