Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Throughout the last century, Japan has successfully promoted an epidemiological transition from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases. The mortality rate of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis has decreased significantly, and non-communicable diseases such as cancer occupy the top position in terms of mortality. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimation by World Health Organization on 5 May 2022 showed that the excess mortality was extremely low in Japan in 2020 and 2021.

However, this does not mean that there is no burden of infectious disease in Japan. Every day, many people develop infectious disease, and deaths occur. While many people are taking countermeasures against infection such as hand washing and mask wearing, school closures due to influenza have also occurred during the winter season. It may be helpful for future discussion about how to measure the burden of infectious diseases in similar developed countries to examine the burden of infectious diseases in Japan. This Special Issue invites the submission of quantitative research papers that examine the burden of infectious diseases in Japan. We welcome the submission of articles including not only epidemiological indicators such as deaths and DALYs, but also the economic cost of countermeasures against infection in Japan.
