Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to announce our call for papers for the Special Issue of IJERPH titled: “Innovative Food and Nutrition Approaches to Promote Healthy Lifestyles”.

In 1999, the WHO defined a healthy lifestyle as a way of living that lowers the risk of being ‘seriously ill or dying early’; the definition throughout the years was clarified as ‘balance of responsible and smart health choices; eating right, daily physical activity, promoting emotional and spiritual wellness, ensuring adequate sleep, avoiding harmful drugs, alcohol, tobacco, illness, stress, & safeguarding a good work-life balance’. Several of the WHO recommendations for achieving a healthy lifestyle include food and nutritional perspectives, such as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, reducing fat, sugar, and salt intake, and exercising; as well as controlling body weight and the body mass index. While those recommendations are valid and established, our Special Issue welcomes food and nutritional approaches beyond those which could impact our health and wellbeing. This can include but is not limited to dietary approaches, eating habits, and trends in food choice behaviors. While we welcome innovative approaches that could be used to improve the nutritional quality of people’s diets to contribute to their healthy lifestyle, we also welcome innovation in the food supply chain—e.g., novel crops/novel foods biofortification/food fortification, and novel approaches in processing and manufacture (e.g., food matrix/texture). The use of innovative approaches or technologies can also help us to better understand food environments/food behaviors/food intake or help with better food choice behavior, and our Special Issue is open to all innovations in food and nutritional sciences that aim to support health.
