Oral medicine is a vital discipline within dentistry that bridges the gap between oral health and general medical health. This specialty focuses on the diagnosis and non-surgical management of a wide spectrum of oral conditions and lesions, including mucosal diseases, salivary gland disorders, orofacial pain syndromes, oral infections, and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Although oral medicine is well-recognized in many parts of the world as an essential subspecialty of dentistry, significant gaps in knowledge and training persist. These gaps often translate into challenges in the appropriate assessment and management of patients presenting with oral lesions and related conditions.
In modern clinical practice, dentists are required to manage an increasingly diverse patient population—from young, healthy individuals to older patients with multiple chronic illnesses, many of whom are medically complex and taking multiple medications. The oral cavity often reflects systemic health, with conditions such as immune-mediated mucocutaneous diseases, hematological disorders, endocrine disturbances, and adverse drug reactions manifesting first or most prominently in the mouth. Furthermore, early detection of potentially malignant disorders and oral cancers remains critical to improving patient prognosis and survival. This complexity is compounded by a general lack of awareness and understanding of the oral medicine profession among many dental practitioners.
Dentists play a critical role in improving both the quality of and access to oral healthcare. To fulfil this role effectively, they must be equipped with the knowledge and clinical skills to recognize, manage, and appropriately refer patients with oral lesions and conditions, while appreciating the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving optimal patient outcomes.
The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight common and clinically significant oral diseases and conditions affecting the oral cavity, with a focus on their prevention, early detection, accurate diagnosis, and evidence-based management. By showcasing current advances and fostering greater awareness, this collection seeks to support dental practitioners, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals with oral mucosal diseases and related disorders.
