Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Digital technologies have transformed the ways in which we communicate in the contemporary era, and artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key factor in this evolution. Through language models such as GPT-4 and other AI algorithms, human interaction has become more fluid and accessible, but ethical and social challenges related to privacy, misinformation, and algorithmic bias have also arisen.

Key applications such as virtual assistants, the automation of social media communication, machine translation systems, and chatbots not only optimize efficiency but also affect the dynamics of interpersonal and professional communication, such as journalism or political communication. The integration of AI into digital technologies offers vast potential regarding the improvement of communication, but a critical approach is required in order to mitigate its inherent risks.

The objective of this Special Issue is to explore how digital tools, powered by AI, are redefining the way in which we interact, process information, and relate globally. Specifically, it aims to analyze the impact of AI on communication, assessing its advantages in terms of accessibility and personalization, and highlighting its possible impact on autonomy and authenticity in messages. We intend to contribute to the literature on communication and AI by elucidating the transformation of this field.

We welcome the submission of innovative approaches and papers that employ a wide range of methodologies (i.e., quantitative and qualitative methods). The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Generative AI
  • AI tools for news production;
  • AI literacy;
  • Social networks on society;
  • Disinformation and digital platforms;
  • Reception studies, audience perception of AI;
  • The role of citizens in the digital public sphere;
  • Ethical and societal implications of AI-driven communication;
  • Disparities in AI access
