Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Organic coatings play an important role in corrosion protection. In some cases, the application of pure organic coatings has a certain limit because of their molecular structure characteristics. The performance on hardness, thermal stability, and abrasive resistance of organic coatings is not as good as that of inorganic materials. Especially important, they often show a high curing shrinkage rate after curing, which leads them not to meet the practical requirements for some precision application. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the organic–inorganic hybrid coatings to overcome the disadvantages of pure organic coatings via the synergistic effect between organic and inorganic phase in hybrid coatings. The properties of these hybrids are the sum of the individual contributions of both the organic and inorganic phases, and the role exerted by their inner interfaces may become important and predominant. Therefore, the overall properties and the behavior of the hybrid materials are strictly related to the morphology of the interfaces and nanophases. Consequently, designing and preparing organic/inorganic hybrid coatings and studying their structure and action mechanism are of great significance for the corrosion protection of metals.

This Special Issue intends to collect relevant work proposing advanced design and preparation strategies of organic–inorganic hybrid coatings for corrosion protection, including, but not limited, to sol–gel synthetic methods, structural modification, functional grafts, and physical mixing.
