Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Infectious diseases represent one of the most critical global health problems and are a common cause of disability, sickness, and mortality in people of all ages. Conventional treatment and prevention strategies employ anti-infective agents which have been associated with resistance development, suboptimal dosing, and side effects. Though the invention of novel anti-infective molecules continues to evolve, these diseases remain key threats to human health and welfare. As a result, novel polymer-based drug delivery approaches that can effectively circumvent these drawbacks, accomplish complete infection clearance, and augment therapeutic outcomes have emerged. Polymeric biomaterials are known to respond well to desired physiological processes and have been extensively utilized as viable carriers for bioactive agents. They play major roles in the engineering of innovative delivery systems by enabling rate-controlled, tunable, and cyclical release of these bioactive molecules. This Special Issue therefore seeks to collate recent advancements in polymeric biomaterials-based architectures for the rate-modulated delivery of small and/or large molecule drugs as well as antigens (for vaccine development) indicated for the prevention and treatment of communicable diseases of bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic origin.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
