Dear Colleagues,
Light-weight design has become significant in manufacturing fields in order to meet the demand of energy saving and emission reduction. More light materials (Al, Mg, Ti, plastic and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer/plastic (CFRP), etc.) are introduced to replace the heavy components (steel). Obtaining a high-quality joint between them is important for the realization of a light-weight design, and laser welding provides a solution.
During the laser welding of dissimilar materials, two issues are faced: 1) for a reactive system of dissimilar materials (Al/steel, Al/Ti, etc.), excessive intermetallic compounds may be formed at the interface; 2) for a non-reactive system of dissimilar materials (Mg/steel, metal/plastics, etc.), sufficient reaction may not be induced at the interface. The interfacial reaction has the dominant effect on the final mechanical properties of the joint. Therefore, regulating interfacial reaction is the key point to obtain a laser-welded dissimilar joint with satisfactory mechanical properties.
This Special Issue will focus on the above issues during laser welding of dissimilar materials (including dissimilar metals, plastic/metals, CFRP/metals, etc.) for the purpose of weight reduction. The articles in this SI will compile various subjects, ranging from but not limited to effective control methods for interfacial reaction and mechanical properties of laser-welded dissimilar joints.
