Dear Colleagues,
Corrosion of metals and alloys has made their range of applications limited. An often proposed solution to decrease the impact of corrosion is applying a protective coating that would provide active or passive corrosion protection. Several materials have been used as active anticorrosion pigments, such as transition metal chromates or phosphates, while plate-like materials and polymers have been used as barrier materials. Since recent changes to health and environmental regulations have restricted the used of some of these materials, the industry is looking for new materials to replace them, and 2D carbon-based materials have been proven to provide efficient protection by having increased barrier properties due to their high aspect ratio and impermeability to water and oxygen molecules.
High-temperature oxidation is a significant challenge that needs solving in solar absorber technology. The surface temperature of aluminum or copper sheets used in solar absorbers can rise up to 500 °C, at which point the metal undergoes corrosion. Corroded surface increases thermal losses, reducing the efficiency of the system. Research work has been carried out aiming to improve the oxidation stability of metallic surfaces used in solar technology, and this paper discusses the influence of thin inorganic films (TIOC) based on 2D carbon materials in combination with silane as a binder on model surfaces.
