Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based innovations and inventions have multiplied over the past few decades, and as future AI technology improves, that rate will continue to accelerate. There have been several very successful AI-based developments in business administration, cyber security, transport logistics, healthcare diagnostics, marketing, linguistics, etc. The use of AI has also emerged as a pivotal tool in various research domains, including material design and discovery. AI plays a major role in process optimization techniques. In the context of nanomaterials, process optimization has the potential to lead to new nanomaterials with unique applications. Thus, AI tools have widely been used in nanotechnology research within the last decade.

Convergence between AI intelligence and nanotechnology has the potential to significantly alter the trajectory of many technological innovations that rely on AI-enabled explorations and algorithmic optimization based on new computer architectures, data, and hybrid technologies that use a large variety of related disciplines. The field is exponentially expanding with an in-depth understanding of the classification of material properties at the nanoscale, theoretical approaches and simulations in nanoscience, design consideration of nanodevices, and material synthesis at the nanoscale with controlled morphology. This has led to the development of size- and shape-controlled nanomaterials with applications in electronics, catalysis, quantum and biomedical technologies, agriculture, and biomedical applications. Despite the current progress, more robust synthesis and validation procedures that use current and future trends that can boost artificial intelligence-based applications are still lacking. It is anticipated that the intersection of artificial intelligence and nanotechnology can shape the path for many technological developments using nanomaterials.

The aim of this Special Issue is to form a repository of current and diverse research that highlights the use of AI in nanomaterial synthesis for the development of novel nanomaterials and novel and unique applications in electronics, optics, catalysis, medicine, agriculture, and sustainability. In addition to original research, for this Special Issue, we will consider review papers, including mini-reviews focused on a very specific topic.

Topics of interest include the following:

  1. Nanomaterial synthesis assisted by AI and machine learning.
  2. AI-developed nanomaterials for use in sensors/detectors, catalysis, agriculture, and waste management (including micro/nano plastics).
  3. AI-developed magnetic nanomaterials.
  4. AI and machine learning in nanosafety.
  5. AI-developed nanomaterials in nanomedicine.
  6. AI-enabled nanomaterials for the Internet of (every) Things; IoT devices;
  7. AI and foresight tools to understand and bridge knowledge gaps.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
