Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, integrated photonics has made significant strides due to advancements in nanofabrication technologies. Key components such as low-loss waveguides, integrated lasers, optical modulators, filters, detectors, and isolators have all been successfully implemented on an integrated platform. Additionally, the high-level confinement of light within integrated optical waveguides enables the exploration of optical nonlinearities, leading to nonlinear photonics phenomena like optical frequency comb generation, supercontinua, and second harmonic generation. These components facilitate the integration of complex and multi-functional optical systems at the chip scale, offering portability and low power consumption. Photonic integrated lasers have become the primary source for most integrated photonic systems, meeting the demands for narrow linewidth, integrability, and cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the achievement of ultra-narrow linewidth lasers has been accomplished through self-injection locking to an ultra-high Q-integrated optical resonator. Integrated piezoelectric actuators enable frequency tunability. Despite these promising advancements, challenges persist in developing lasers that possess both a narrow linewidth and tunability, as well as in integrating lasers that operate at visible and ultraviolet frequencies. The heterogeneous integration of the laser with other photonic components will further enhance the stability, scalability, and volume production of the photonic system.

This Special Issue invites manuscripts that introduce recent advances in emerging trends in photonic integrated lasers. All theoretical, numerical, and experimental papers will be accepted. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ultra-narrow linewidth integrated lasers;
  • Frequency tunable photonic lasers;
  • The piezoelectric actuation of integrated lasers;
  • The stabilization and characterization of photonic lasers;
  • The heterogeneous integration of semiconductor lasers;
  • The hybrid integration of photonic lasers on photonic integrated circuits;
  • The packaging of integrated laser modules;
  • High output power photonic lasers;
  • Visible and ultraviolet light photonic integrated lasers;
  • Photonic lasers with novel structures;
  • Self-injection locked photonic lasers;
  • The application of photonic integrated lasers in LiDAR and spectroscopy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
