Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The tremendous growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years has had a significant impact in the medical domain already. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is expected to revolutionize healthcare. In marketing terms, the global IoMT is expected to reach $72.02B by 2021, reaching a CAGR of 26.2%. At the same time, Ambient Intelligence (AmI) promises the pervasive diffusion of intelligence in the surrounding environment, through various wireless technologies and intelligent sensors that grow smaller and even disappear, letting only the interface as the means of communication with the user. Such technology and intelligent environments are expected to greatly enhance healthcare delivery and even create a paradigm shift in medical decision making and current care pathways. IoMT in AmI environments connected with patients will not only reduce hospitalization costs but even more importantly benefit patients by offering faster and more-accurate diagnoses with increased prognostic value, served not only in hospitals and clinics, but also in the community and at home. This will be achieved by bringing together state-of-the-art technologies and new usage application developments dealing with machine learning, embedded artificial intelligence, clinical decision support, data analytics, patient ubiquitous monitoring, drug adherence, and rehabilitation aspects, able to empower both patients and clinicians.

We invite investigators to submit original research articles and reviews to this Special Issue demonstrating the benefits of the use of AmI in health-related environments, as well as the infrastructure and technology required. Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Architecture and protocols for realizing unobstructive healthcare environments;
  • Ambient assisted living and e-healthcare;
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for AmI systems in pervasive healthcare;
  • Human-centric computer interfaces for health-related AmI environments;
  • Software agent and knowledge-based technologies in AmI patient-centric environments;
  • Security and privacy models for healthcare AmI applications;
  • Interoperability of heterogeneous network and software technologies for AmI systems in pervasive healthcare;
  • Smart sensors and intelligent devices for IoMT;
  • Seamless QoS-aware (mobile/ fixed) communication protocols for IoMT;
  • Health data analytics and personalized models in health-related AmI environments;
  • Case studies and AmI applications in the healthcare domain (i.e., supporting people with physical/mental disabilities and chronic diseases).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

Further information on MDPI's Special Issue polices can be found here.
