Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Smart sensors and digital image processing tools are, nowadays, fundamental to document, preserve, and make cultural heritage accessible at a variety of scales, from the structure of very large sites to the tiniest microscopic details of cultural artifacts. Elaboration of acquired digital data enables many applications, from stylistic and historical analysis to restoration, to virtual fruition and visualization.
In this Special Issue, you are invited to submit original research contributions and innovative reports on advancements, developments, and experiments pertaining to the exploitation of sensor data in cultural heritage applications. In particular, the Special Issue welcomes contributions on newly developed methods and ideas that combine data obtained from various sensors in the following fields (but not limited to these fields):
- 3D scanning, remote sensing, multispectral and multi-light imaging, X-ray, terahertz imaging, motion capture, and other techniques allowing cultural heritage to be recorded;
- Visual data processing, visualization, and multimodal data fusion;
- Image and 3D data processing, classification, and retrieval;
- Re-colorization and art restoration from incomplete data;
- Material characterization, cracks and feature detection, and ageing estimation and prediction;
- Acquisition protocols, digital libraries, archiving, and long-term preservation of 3D documents;
- Pattern recognition and neural networks for automatic annotation of cultural heritage objects;
- Sensors for monitoring visitation and fruition of cultural heritage sites and analyses of users’ experiences.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
