Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The high production of synthetic organic compounds has resulted in their extensive release into the air, water, and soil. Due to the lack of environmental data, most of these compounds are considered as emerging pollutants in the environment. With persistence, bioaccumulation, semi-volatility, high toxicity, or the potential for long‐range transport, these organic pollutants can eventually enter organisms and the human body, causing ecological and health risks. To assess the risk from potential exposures, there is a need for qualitative and quantitative determination of these organic pollutants at trace levels.

In recent years, gas/liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/LC-MS) has been widely used in targeted chemical screening and quantitative evaluation. By establishing appropriate sample preparation and instrumental analysis protocols, we can determine these harmful pollutants in many different matrices. However, the determination of some novel organic pollutants remains challenging due to issues such as the transformation of target analytes, interference from complex matrices, and blank contamination. Therefore, simple, accurate, and reliable analytical methods still need to be explored.

We welcome researchers in related fields to share their research on the determination of organic pollutants by GC/LC-MS. The research content may include, but is not limited to, (1) the establishment of new sample preparation protocols for biological samples and non-biological samples, (2) the improvement of chromatography and mass spectrometry, and (3) effective measures for quality assurance and quality control.
