Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Northeast Asian countries and regions such as Japan, Korea, and Taiwan have accepted foreign migrant workers, marriage migrants, international students, and overseas compatriots for several decades. As a result, these countries and regions quickly transformed into multiethnic and multicultural societies. Migrant workers had the effect of providing labor in declining industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and fishing, but they were also perceived as a threat to the jobs and wages of local workers. Marriage migrant women provided local men who were unable to find spouses at home with the opportunity to start a family, but due to their large age and cultural differences, they were exposed to the risk of harassment, domestic violence, and family breakup. Despite the advantage of sharing blood and culture with their local compatriots, returning overseas compatriots also faced prejudice and discrimination in their homeland. In this way, immigrants from Northeast Asian countries and regions are unable to successfully integrate into their host countries and regions. In this Special Issue, we welcome papers that examine the level and issues of social integration of various migrant groups in Northeast Asian countries and regions from a comparative perspective. Papers that analyze factors affecting migrant integration (e.g. immigrant characteristics, immigration policies) are also welcome.
