Objective: We aimed to investigate the association between the angular trajectory of the vestibular aqueduct (ATVA) with other radiological parameters of temporal bone and clinical characteristics in patients with Ménière’s disease (MD). Methods: A total of 125 unilateral MD patients and 118 controls were enrolled. Computer tomography (CT)-based radiological parameters included ATVA, vestibular aqueduct (VA) visibility, VA morphology, the vertical part of the posterior semicircular canal—the posterior fossa distance (PPD), and peri-VA pneumatization. The clinical characteristics of MD patients included gender, age of diagnosis/onset, disease duration, migraine history, clinical staging, and the results of audio-vestibular tests. The radiological parameters and clinical characteristics in MD patients were compared. Results: Compared with control ears, ATVA ≥ 140° was more prevalent and ATVA ≤ 120° was less frequent in the MD-affected side. For the MD-affected side, MD patients with ATVA ≥ 140° exhibited more severe VA invisibility and obliteration and higher male preponderance than those with ATVA ≤ 120°. Other radio-clinical features did not differ between these two subgroups. Conclusion: In the current study, ATVA ≥ 140°, an indicator of a hypoplastic endolymphatic sac, was found in approximately one-third of the affected and unaffected ears of patients with MD, as well as in a minority of controls. This suggests that the indices may be a predisposing factor rather than a specific marker for the MD ear. The male preponderance in MD patients with hypoplastic ES suggests a gender difference in the anatomical factors for MD pathogenesis. Full article

The impacts of hypolipidemic pharmaceuticals on fish lipid metabolism remain unexplored. However, data points to similar effects and mechanisms of action between fish and humans. Therefore, fish may be a strong model for screening hypolipidemic drug candidates and water pollution by lipid-modulating agents. This study aimed to test a new hypolipidemic model assay with juvenile brown trout using atorvastatin (ATV)—a hypolipidemic chemical. We selected 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), known to cause hyperlipidemia in fish, to ensure model functionality. Fish received intramuscular injections of 4 μL/g for two weeks under the following experimental conditions: control—C (0.7% NaCl), solvent control—SC (0.7% NaCl, 0.9% ethanol, 0.1% dimethyl sulfoxide), ATV (0.3 μg/g), EE2 (2 μg/g), and a mixture of both compounds—MIX (0.3 μg/g ATV and 2 μg/g EE2). Endpoints included blood lipid biochemistry, hepatic lipid droplet quantification, and liver mRNA expression of lipid-related target genes (related to lipogenesis, lipid transport, and β-oxidation pathways). ATV lowered blood total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) levels, whilst triglycerides and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) were highest under EE2. Hepatic lipid droplet deposition significantly increased in the ATV, EE2, and MIX groups. ATV and MIX caused a significant downregulation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (pparγ) and acetyl Co-A oxidase 3 (acox3). EE2 upregulated acyl-CoA long-chain synthetase 1 (acsl1) and downregulated both fatty acid binding protein 1 (fabp1) and acetyl Co-A oxidase 1-3I (acox1-3I). ATV caused hypolipidemic effects in juvenile brown trout and could even counteract EE2-stimulated hyperlipidemia, reinforcing the potential of fish hypo- and hyperlipidemic models. Full article

Workers in the rock face stabilisation sector are exposed to high levels of vibration from pneumatic rock drills, which can lead to vibration injuries. The work situation is also ergonomically challenging since the work often is performed on steep cliffs with heavy equipment and a substantial degree of dust exposure. To reduce exposure to vibrations, the equipment has been redesigned, including the machine’s handle, feeding hoist and the implementation of a reciprocating mass generating a counter force to reduce the vibrations. As a side project, a dust removal device was also developed. It was shown that vibration and dust exposure can be substantially reduced. Full article

The present study aims to investigate the dynamic performance and design optimization of a novel magnetorheological elastomer based adaptive tuned vibration absorber (MRE-ATVA). The proposed MRE-ATVA consists of a light-weight sandwich beam treated with an MRE core layer and two electromagnets installed at both free ends. Three different design configurations for electromagnets are proposed. The finite element (FE) model of the proposed MRE-ATVA and magnetic model of the electromagnets are developed and combined to evaluate the frequency range of the absorber under varying magnetic field intensity. The results of the developed model are validated in multiple stages with available analytical and simulation data. A multidisciplinary design optimization strategy has been formulated to maximize the frequency range of the proposed MRE-based ATVA while respecting constraints of weight, size, mechanical stress, and sandwich beam deflection. The optimal solution is obtained and compared for the three proposed ATVA configurations. The optimal ATVA with a U-shaped electromagnet shows more than 40% increase in the natural frequency while having a total mass of 596 g. Full article

Conventional quality parameters such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) or Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) give information about the quantity of organic matter present in wastewater, but do not give a clear indication of the biodegradability of the pollutants flowing in the WWTP. Detailed knowledge can be obtained by dividing the total COD into fractions. Fractionation and balancing of COD can be determined in various ways and with varying accuracy. Good wastewater characteristics are obtained on the basis of COD fractionation in accordance with ATV-A 131 guidelines, especially when the wastewater characteristics are in high compliance with the assumptions of the method. The article proposes a modification of the ATV-A131 method that increases the accuracy of determining the COD fraction. In order to reduce errors in the calculation of COD fractions, the value of fraction XS was calculated on the basis of the biochemical degradation rate determined in studies (k) for raw wastewater, whereas the SI fraction was calculated from the difference between SCOD and BODTot of filtered treated wastewater. BODTot of the treated wastewater was calculated taking into account the rate of biochemical degradation determined in the studies (k) for treated wastewater. The shares of individual COD fractions in raw wastewater calculated on the basis of the standard and modified procedure differed by approx. 10% in the case of suspension fractions. Modification of the methodology to determine the COD of the treated wastewater SS fraction significantly influenced the contents of all fractions in treated wastewater. Full article

This study presents vibration control using actively tunable vibration absorbers (ATVA) to suppress vibration of a thin plate. The ATVA is made of a sandwich hollow structure embedded with electrorheological fluid (ERF). ERF is considered to be one of the most important smart fluids and it is suitable to be embedded in a smart structure due to its controllable rheological property. ERF’s apparent viscosity can be controlled in response to the electric field and the change is reversible in 10 microseconds. Therefore, the physical properties of the ERF-embedded smart structure, such as the stiffness and damping coefficient, can be changed in response to the applied electric field. A mathematical model is difficult to be obtained to describe the exact characteristics of the ERF embedded ATVA because of the nonlinearity of ERF’s viscosity. Therefore, a fuzzy modeling and experimental validations of ERF-based ATVA from stationary random vibrations of thin plates are presented in this study. Because Type-2 fuzzy sets generalize Type-1 fuzzy sets so that more modeling uncertainties can be handled, a semi-active vibration controller is proposed based on Type-2 fuzzy sets. To investigate the different performances by using different types of fuzzy controllers, the experimental measurements employing both type-1 fuzzy and interval type-2 fuzzy controllers are implemented by the Compact RIO embedded system. The fuzzy modeling framework and solution methods presented in this work can be used for design, performance analysis, and optimization of ATVA from varying harmonic vibration of thin plates.
