Due to the promotion of sustainable development goals and rapid economic development, the problem of rural sewage treatment is becoming increasingly severe. In order to understand the research hotspots, progress, and trends of ecological treatment technology for rural sewage at home and abroad, this article analyzes relevant literature published between 2000 and 2023 based on the core collection databases of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WOS) using VOSviewer and CiteSpace visualization software. The research results indicate a continuous increase in attention to ecological treatment technologies for rural sewage, both domestically and internationally. Although China started relatively late in this field, it has developed rapidly. “China Water & Wastewater” has had a significant impact in related fields domestically, and a top-tier journal has not yet been founded by China internationally. The collaboration between research authors and institutions is evident, with CNKI focusing on exploring specific governance technologies, while WOS pays more attention to the overall governance framework and critical technologies. The research hotspots of ecological treatment technology for future village and town sewage include specific treatment technologies, treatment efficiency, overall treatment strategies, and environmental impact assessments. At the same time, cross-regional and cross-border cooperation should be strengthened, interdisciplinary collaboration should be promoted, open cooperation platforms should be established, diversified publishing channels should be supported, and research on microbial communities and non-point source pollution should be deepened. Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua (PCH) belongs to the genus Polygonatum Mill of the Liliaceae family. As a traditional tonic herb, the rhizome of PCH has been widely used as a functional food and traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for the treatment of spleen and lung Qi deficiency, essence and blood deficiency, internal heat, and thirst. To further elucidate the unknown chemical composition of PCH, this study presents an analytical strategy using macroporous resin (D101) column chromatography combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS) for the characterization of PCH’s chemical composition. The PCH extracts were separated via D101 resin column chromatography in conjunction with reverse phase liquid chromatography (C18 column). They were then analyzed by Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry utilizing parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) mode, diagnostic fragment ions (DFIs), and neutral loss (NL). A total of 153 compounds were identified through comparing the mass spectrometry data with standard references, the published literature, and public databases, including 40 alkaloids, 43 organic acids, 30 flavonoids, 17 saponins, and 23 other compounds; The result expands PCH’s chemical composition, enhancing our understanding of its therapeutic effects and quality assurance. At the same time, the strategy has the potential to show a wide range of applications in the chemical characterization of different samples. Full article

Illicium verum Hook. f. is a globally significant spice, which is recognized in China as a food-medicine homolog and extensively utilized across the pharmaceutical, food, and spice industries. China boasts the world’s leading resources of I. verum, yet its comprehensive utilization remains relatively underexplored. Through a resource survey of I. verum and the application of bibliometric visualization using CiteSpace, this study analyzed 324 papers published in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) from 1962 to 2023 and 353 core documents from China’s three major databases (CNKI, Wanfang Database, and VIP Database). I. verum from Guangxi province towards various southern provinces in China, with autumn fruits exhibited superior quality and market value over their spring fruits. Literature in WOSCC emerged earlier, with a research emphasis on food science technology and pharmacology pharmacy domains. WOSCC research on I. verum could be divided into two phases: an embryonic period (1962–2001) and a growth period (2002–2023), showing an overall upward trend in publication. The three major Chinese databases contain a larger number of publications, with a focus on the food sector, which could be categorized into three stages: an embryonic period (1990–1999), a growth period (2000–2010), and a stable period (2011–2023), with an overall downward trend in publication. Both Chinese and international research hotspots converge on the medical applications of I. verum, with antioxidant bioactivity research emerging as a prevailing trend. This study delineated the resource distribution of I. verum across China and identified the research hotspots and trends both in China and internationally. The findings are beneficial for guiding researchers in swiftly establishing their research focus and furnishing decision-makers with a comprehensive reference for industry information. Full article

With global digital transformation and higher education evolution, academic libraries are enhancing their information and knowledge management practices. This study responds to this trend by identifying quality management (QM) models discussed and implemented in Chinese academic libraries, as well as by examining the enablers and challenges associated with QM planning and implementation. A systematic review was executed adhering to the PRISMA guidelines to critically appraise the relevant literature from five international and Chinese scholarly databases. Out of 435 initial records, 52 studies were included based on the established inclusion criteria and quality assessment benchmarks. The results revealed that Chinese academic libraries were increasingly integrating international QM models, including ISO 9000, TQM, and EFQM. This integration was driven by six enablers: four external enablers, including the introduction of QM, government support, technological advancements, and quality assessment practices; and two internal enablers, including developmental needs and cultural emphasis on educational excellence. However, these libraries also encountered six challenges in this process: three external challenges, including rapid industrial evolution, deficiency in comprehensive evaluation indicators, and rigorous ISO audits; and three internal challenges, including resistance to change, insufficiency of motivation for improvement, and inequitable distribution of resources. The findings of the current research could deepen the theoretical understanding of the enablers and challenges of QM in academic libraries from both external and internal dimensions. These findings could also support library management, higher education institution leaders, and policymakers in developing sustainable QM strategies for libraries in China and other countries. Effectiveness of Medilac-S as an Adjuvant to Conventional Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatments: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Numerous clinical studies published in the Chinese language support the use of Medilac-S (Bacillus subtilis R0179 and Enterococcus faecium R0026; non-commercial name IBacilluS+) as an adjuvant in various indications, including ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, acute gastritis, and Helicobacter pylori therapy. This systematic review with a meta-analysis was conducted to summarize clinical studies evaluating the efficacy of this probiotic formulation as an adjuvant to conventional IBS medications. The systematic literature searches in six international and Chinese databases identified 37 eligible studies, of which 33 reported the efficacy of Medilac-S adjunctive therapy using a standardized categorical scale. These 33 studies were included in the meta-analysis using a random-effect model with a stratification by IBS subtype. Overall, Medilac-S significantly improved the efficacy of conventional IBS treatment (RR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.17–1.25; and p < 0.0001) with an average probability of treatment effectiveness being 21% higher with the probiotic adjuvant, regardless of the subtype. Adverse events, reported in 78% of the trials, were described as mild-to-moderate and self-resolving, with a similar incidence in the probiotic adjuvant (6.2%; n = 1347) and control (5.9%; n = 1331) groups. The results of this meta-analysis strengthen the conclusions that Medilac-S is a safe and effective adjuvant to a variety of conventional treatments in IBS patients. Full article

Sustainability of Forest Eco-Products: Comprehensive Analysis and Future Research Directions

Forest ecological products are closely related to ecological balance, and an in-depth understanding of the development dynamics of these products is crucial to the realization of sustainable development that integrates ecological, economic, and social benefits. Based on the Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases, this study conducted a comprehensive econometric analysis of the number of articles, journals, research institutions, author collaborations, research hotspots, and research trends of forest ecological products globally during the period of 2003–2023 with the help of CiteSpace software (Philadelphia, PA, USA). The study’s results revealed the following insights: (1) The research on forest ecological products in recent years showed a general upward trend, but the research interest in foreign countries was higher than that in China. (2) The literature within the WOS database primarily focused on the field of ecology, whereas the literature in the CNKI database predominantly emphasized the field of forestry. (3) In both databases, the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the organization with the highest number of articles. Globally, Chinese institutions had the largest proportion of articles issued. The high percentage of articles issued by specialized agricultural and forestry schools in China showed clear domain relevance. (4) In both databases, author collaborations were relatively decentralized, and no significant core group of authors had been formed. (5) The research hotspots in foreign countries focused on the ecological regulation of forest ecological products, while the research hotspots in China focused on the realization of the economic value of forest ecological products. (6) “Machine learning”, “river basin”, and “health” are the future research frontiers in foreign countries, while “ecological function” and “forest ecosystem service” are the future research frontiers in China. The results of both databases indicate that the sustainability of forest ecological products is a research trend for the coming period. Finally, the outlook for future research on forest eco-products is presented in four aspects: promoting the establishment of a unified international standard certification system for forest eco-products, developing diversified products, strengthening the function of policy support and guidance, and establishing national partnerships. Heavy metal pollution in rivers and lakes arising due to rapid economic development has been extensively studied by various countries due to its direct impact on ecological health and human well-being. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and systematic reviews addressing the current research status of this subject. In this study, we conducted a visual metrological analysis of the literature from 2001 to 2021 using the Web of Science (WoS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) citation databases. The results show that studies conducted in other countries initially outnumbered those in China; after 2010, China emerged as the foremost contributor. Furthermore, both the WoS and CNKI databases indicate active engagement of Chinese researchers through a significant proportion of published papers on metal research, with prominent contributions coming from institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and University CAS. Nevertheless, Chinese research institutions still have relatively low total paper citation numbers and have yet to establish themselves as key players in international scientific research efforts. Additionally, core authors from different countries share substantial similarities in their research directions and focuses. Consistent research hotspots regarding heavy metals in rivers and lakes were identified across both databases, including heavy metal pollution, adsorption, human activities, water quality, and sediment. Effective product design strategies play a crucial role in promoting sustainable production, consumption, and disposal practices. In the literature, many such practices have been proposed by various researchers; however, it is challenging to understand which is more effective from the design point of view. This study employs bibliometric analysis and visualization software, CiteSpace, to comprehensively assess the literature on sustainable product design methods (SPDMs) from two major citation databases, namely, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Web of Science, covering the period between 1999 and 2022. The objective of this review is to identify the latest research trends, progress, and disparities between China and the rest of the world in the field of SPDMs. The findings reveal that the development of SPDMs is characterized by a combination of multi-method integration and expansion, as well as qualitative and quantitative hybrids. However, research processes differ between China and other countries. Chinese studies focus on digital-driven development, rural revitalization, and system design, while research from other countries emphasizes a circular economy, distribution, additive manufacturing, and artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, both Chinese and international studies lack quantitative research methods in relation to socio-cultural sustainability. Future research should aim to deepen sustainable design methods and standards for specialized products, as well as to incorporate quantitative methods that address cultural and social sustainability dimensions. Open-source and shared SPDMs should be encouraged to promote methodological innovation that prioritizes multidimensional and systematic sustainable benefits, leveraging the strengths of new technologies. This study aimed to assess global trends in research on salt stress in rice and provide new directions for future studies. The subjects in this study are a plain text file with full records and cited references (Web of Science core collection as the database, “rice” and “salt” as the retrieved title with the date range from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2021). The bibliometric method was used in this study, and the results were visualized using Scimago Graphica, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. The results showed that China, India, and Japan contributed most of the literature in this field, and the institutes with the largest academic output were the Chinese Academy of Science, the International Rice Research Institute, and Nanjing Agriculture University. This study argues that research on salt stress in rice has been conducted in three main areas: phenotypes, response mechanisms, and remediation strategies. Inoculation of rhizosphere bacteria, ion homeostasis, soil remediation, and gene editing will be popular topics in rice salt stress research in the future. This study aimed to provide a potential theoretical direction for research on salt stress in rice as well as a reference for feasible studies on the exploitation of saline–alkali lands. Full article

Carbon emissions are critical to climate change, and land-use change is an essential source of growth in carbon emissions. Research on land-use carbon emissions has become one of the hotspots in academic research. To explore the research hotspots and development trends of land-use carbon emissions in the last 20 years, CiteSpace software was used to conduct a quantitative analysis of relevant literature. This paper was based on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WoS) database literature on land-use carbon emissions from 2001 to 2020. The scientific research cooperation network CiteSpace software, with keyword co-occurrence, clustering, and burst word detection, was used to systematically analyze the main research strengths, hotspots and frontiers and clarify the research progress. The research results are as follows: (1) the amount of literature and the depth of research on land-use carbon emissions have increased yearly. However, there is little cooperation between research institutions and scholars, and there is still a lack of large-scale and stable research teams. (2) At the research hotspot level, the English literature focuses on building models and theoretical frameworks to study the internal mechanisms and driving factors of carbon emissions and climate change. The Chinese literature focuses on achieving regional carbon emissions reductions and carbon cycle goals and optimizing a low-carbon economy, transportation and land-use structure. (3) Research frontiers and trends show that the English literature first explored carbon sequestration, organic carbon, and carbon accounting. In China, the research frontiers are gradually becoming focused on influencing factors, decoupling analysis, and the built environment. The study will strengthen the intensity and depth of global carbon emission research and provide a reference for improving global climate change, protecting ecology and balancing economic development. With the increasing requirements of healthy habitat environments, landscape microclimates have been widely concerned. To comprehensively grasp the development history and research status of the landscape microclimates in China and other countries, CiteSpace software was used to comparatively analyze and visually present the literature related to landscape microclimates in CNKI and WOS databases for the past 20 years. The results show that: (1) The number of publications on landscape microclimate research shows an increasing trend in China and other countries, and the number of publications increased significantly after 2016. Although the number of publications by Chinese scholars is less than that of foreign scholars, they have developed rapidly in recent years, and their international influence has increased significantly. (2) A positive exchange has been formed among international scholars, and the number of collaborative studies has been increasing. China’s microclimate research has formed relatively stable teams that have conducted numerous studies in the fields of urban communities, street greening, and plant communities, respectively. Although the links between research teams and institutions in China and other countries are relatively close, they still need to be further strengthened. (3) In the past decade, the theoretical system of landscape microclimates has been improved, and the research themes have become more concentrated, but it still has remained close to the early basic research. (4) Future research will remain centered on “mitigating the urban heat island effect” and “optimizing human heat perception”. New topics such as “biodiversity”, “carbon cycle”, and “climate change” have been added. In conclusion, the research needs to continue to explore the evaluation system of microclimates and verify the evaluation index of outdoor thermal comfort for human thermal adaptation in different regions. The standards and systems of human habitat adapted to different regional characteristics should be formed. Full article

(1) Background: Resilience enables individuals to develop positive coping strategies when faced with adversity. However, knowledge on resilience in stroke patients remains limited, and resilience assessment methods continue to be debated. (2) Aim: To perform a concept analysis of resilience in stroke patients. (3) Methods: The Walker and Avant approach to concept analysis was adopted. Searches were performed in the PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and Chinese Electronic Periodical Services (CEPS) databases and grey literature using the keywords “stroke patient”, “resilience”, and “concept analysis”. (4) Results: The defining attributes of resilience in stroke patients were classified into internal personality traits and external environmental support. Antecedents included physical, mental, and familial and social impairments caused by the disease, and the consequences were good adaptation, which included active cooperation with rehabilitation activities, positive thinking, goal setting, and harboring hope for the future. (5) Conclusion: Resilience is of a diverse and complex nature. Optimism and positivity, problem-solving ability, and familial and social support may assist in re-adjusting or restoring the balance between physical and mental health when a stroke patient faces adversity. Key factors affecting resilience in stroke patients should be further investigated in future research to assist in the development of effective interventional treatment measures. Full article

Gender differences and stereotypes have been widely studied. Performative masculinity or “doing gender” is the adoption of traits considered to be “masculine” to achieve acceptance in society. Performative masculinity, as it relates to career development for men in nursing, could be affected by internal attitudes and career choice, and external influences of culture. There are no critical systematic reviews to describe this process. The aim of this study was to synthesize research on how men in nursing experience masculine identity at work. A systematic literature search and qualitative synthesis using meta-ethnography guided this study. The literature search included studies from the electronic databases of PubMed, CINAHL, Medline, and Airiti Library, published in English or Chinese from 1994 to 2016. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-syntheses identified three themes describing how men in nursing experience masculine identity at work: (1) Nursing could be a gendered-neutral occupation suitable to both genders; (2) performative masculinity; and (3) strategies used when providing bodywork and care. Exploring insights about the tensions of performative masculinity among men in nursing, this study may help to address the challenges encountered in nursing education, practice, and career development. Establishing a male nursing model based on evidence from academic and clinical practice for nursing students and professional nurses could help to meet the increasing demand for nurses. Full article

Big data technology has triggered a boom in research and applications around the world. The construction industry has ushered in a new technological change in this context. Researchers have conducted in-depth research on the intersection of big data and architecture, but lack quantitative analysis and comprehensive evaluation of the research results. This article draws a series of knowledge maps with the help of the CiteSpace software using the relevant literature in the Web of Science database between 2007 and 2022 as data samples to comprehensively grasp the research development at the intersection of big data and the construction industry. The knowledge base, research hotspots, and domain evolution trends in the intersection of big data and the construction industry are analyzed quantitatively and aided by qualitative analysis through visualization, respectively. The results show that Chinese and American scholars have published more relevant papers in international journals, and some well-known universities in both countries constitute the main group of research institutions. The research hotspots are BIM, data mining, building energy saving, smart cities, and disaster prevention and damage prevention. In the future, the research on the integration and application of the construction industry with emerging technologies, such as big data, BIM, and cloud computing will be connected more closely. This study provides a preliminary overall picture of the research of big data in the field of construction by sorting out and analyzing the existing results. Full article

A Bibliometric and Visualized Analysis of Research Progress and Trends on Decay and Cavity Trees in Forest Ecosystem over 20 Years: An Application of the CiteSpace Software

As one of the most serious health issues facing trees, the occurrence of decay and hollowing not only reduces the stability and quality of living trees but also leads to the deterioration of their eco-physiological functions, which creates great challenges to the conservation and sustainable management of forest resources. In recent years, the study of tree decay and hollow rot have attracted more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad. The relevant research results have a great significance for the prevention and control of affected living trees and the conservation and sustainable management of endangered species. However, there is a lack of systematic literature review and an insufficient understanding of research hotspots and trends in this field. This paper selects literature retrieved from the CNKI and Web of Science core databases as data sources, the number of publications, research topics, research status, hot spots, and trends, as well as the main research countries, institutions, and co-cited authors in the field of tree decay are visualized by using bibliometrics software CiteSpace (V.5.8.R3), and the current international research hotspots and development trends in this field were systematically summarized. The results showed that the number of papers in this field at home and abroad showed rapid growth in general, and the number of Chinese papers showed a slow growth after 2009. The number of papers published in English by Chinese authors was more than the number of papers published in Chinese in the field. From 2002 to 2021, the research hotspots in this field are constantly changing. Cluster analysis shows that the main themes of the relevant research are as follows: “Eastern Canada” tree species, “hydraulic vulnerability segmentation”, “dead wood management”, and “hydraulic safety”. The advantages and disadvantages of hollow/dead wood on forest ecosystems were explored from different perspectives, providing a theoretical basis and scientific support for the forest health and sustainable management. The United States dominates the research in this field, while China is a relatively late comer but is catching up fast, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the most prolific publisher on this topic in China. The influence of Chinese research in this field on relevant international publications is gradually increasing. In short, the research in this field is still in the phase of rapid development, and both the breadth and depth of quantitative research are increasing. How to accurately diagnose and quantify the internal decay of tree trunks and its relationship with tree death and forest decline under the interference and pressure of climate change and human activities is still a hot and difficult issue in this field.
