The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed how investors gather financial information, with platforms like Google Trends providing valuable insights into investor behavior through the Google Search Volume Index (GSVI). While the relationship between the GSVI and market behavior has been explored in developed markets, its application in emerging markets like Pakistan remains underexplored. This study investigates how investor attention, measured by the GSVI, influences market volatility, liquidity, and stock price movements in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), using weekly data from the KSE-100 Index between 2019 and 2024. The findings reveal that the GSVI significantly impacts market volatility and liquidity, particularly in retail-driven markets with high information asymmetry. Additionally, this research shows that the GSVI is a reliable predictor for stock price fluctuations, with heightened investor attention correlating with increased market activity. Despite the limitations of the GSVI in fully capturing investor sentiment, this study contributes to behavioral finance literature by demonstrating the role of digital information flows in shaping market behavior in emerging markets. It offers actionable insights for investors, financial institutions, and policymakers in Pakistan while suggesting areas for future research in applying the GSVI to global contexts and exploring alternative proxies for investor sentiment in emerging economies. Background/Objectives: Sarcopenia is a condition marked by a continuous decline in skeletal muscle strength and volume, often leading to significant health complications. According to several articles, sarcopenia is highly prevalent in chronic pancreatitis (CP) due to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the pooled prevalence and risk of sarcopenia among CP patients. Methods: The search process adhered to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO under the identification number CRD42025637059. The search was conducted in the following databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI). It covered studies published between 1 January 1985 and 20 December 2024. Only studies published in English or Russian with detailed comprehensive statistics and adult CP were included. Studies with specific patient populations affecting data objectivity were excluded. Sensitivity analyses were conducted (first, only studies with more than 50 CP patients were considered. Second, the analysis was restricted to full articles, excluding abstracts from conferences). Results: In total, 16 studies with 1556 participants (1398 CP patients and 158 controls) met the criteria. The pooled prevalence of sarcopenia was 39.117% (95% CI: 28.891–49.852) in CP patients and 7.745% (95% CI: 2.154–42.622) in the control group. An association was found between sarcopenia and CP using the fixed-effects model when compared to the control group (RR = 2.194, 95% CI: 1.502–3.203). Conclusions: Sarcopenia is underdiagnosed in CP patients despite its significant clinical impact. Management strategies, including pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, nutritional support, and resistance training show potential in the treatment of this state. Further research is needed to establish standardized diagnostic criteria and unified treatment approaches. Early detection and comprehensive care are essential to improving outcomes in CP patients with sarcopenia. Full article

This study investigates whether the aggregate investor information demand for all stocks in a sector demonstrated in the Google search volume index (SVI) can predict the sector’s performance. The evidence shows that a sector’s abnormal SVI can predict the sector’s performance next month, even after controlling for the sector’s contemporaneous standardized unexpected earnings and lagged returns on both the market and the sector. Also found is a partial reversal in the sector’s long-run performance that is not completely consistent with the price pressure hypothesis. This indicates that some fundamental information about a sector can be captured by the sector’s abnormal SVI on a timely basis. Full article

Urology is one of the most competitive specialties in medicine, creating a challenge for prospective students looking to secure a residency position. Our study aims to assess online interest in urology residency by querying online interaction with search terms and criteria for urology residency programs. Utilizing Google Trends analysis from 2011 to 2024, this study examined urology-related search volume indexes, as well as temporal and geographical patterns. Furthermore, the number of residency positions from the American Urological Association database for the 2022 match process was evaluated. Our analysis of temporal trends revealed increased interest in urologist salaries from 2011 to 2019, followed by a decline from 2019 to 2023. Interest in urology-related interviews, applications, research, and letters increased in 2019, marked by the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. California, New York, and Texas had the lowest interest-to-position (IP) ratio, while Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia had the highest IP ratio. Our analysis reveals an evolving interest in salaries, residency programs, and USMLE Step 1 changes in areas connected with urology. We report key geographical areas with high urology residency interest and low numbers of programs, implying a need for expanded residencies in underserved yet high-interest areas. Awareness and continued interest monitoring after the COVID-19 pandemic is critical for understanding interest in urology applicants. Full article

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a highly prevalent yet underestimated disorder caused by the complete or partial obstruction of the upper airways. Although polysomnography is the gold standard for OSAS diagnosis, there is an active search for easily accessible biomarkers of disease presence and severity, particularly those reflecting morphological changes in specific blood cells. We investigated the associations between the presence and severity of OSAS, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW), routinely assessed as part of the complete blood count. From 262 retrieved records from PubMed, the Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, 31 manuscripts were selected for a final analysis, 30 investigating MPV and 15 investigating PDW. MPV was not statistically different between OSAS patients and healthy controls; however, it progressively increased with disease severity. By contrast, OSAS patients had significantly higher PDW values than controls (SMD = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.56; p ˂ 0.001), and the difference increased with disease severity. In a univariate meta-regression, there were significant associations between the MPV and publication year, the apnoea–hypopnea index, and diabetes mellitus, while no associations were observed with the PDW. No significant between-group differences were observed in the subgroup analyses. These data suggest that PDW, and to a lesser extent, MPV, are potential biomarkers of OSAS and require further research to ascertain their pathophysiological significance (PROSPERO, CRD42023459413). Climate change mitigation depends on actions that affect the public interest and lead to widespread changes in public attitudes and behavior. With the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, humanity faced a more imminent threat to its well-being and viability. This retrospective cross-sectional study examines how public interest in climate change was attenuated by the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic using Google Trends Search Volume Index (SVI), weather, and climate data on a United States state-level basis during the first two years of the pandemic from 2020 to 2022. To identify channels through which the COVID-19 pandemic affected information demand on climate change, a novel fixed effect regression model of public climate change interest was developed. The measure captures changes in the climate change SVI independent of weather and climate conditions, comprising pandemic-related changes in living circumstances such as COVID-19-related cases and deaths, mask mandates, and the proportion of the vaccinated population. Our results indicate that public interest in climate change was systematically attenuated by the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study provides an approach for identifying drivers of public interest in climate change. Full article

Purpose: To identify what information kidney stone patients want and the resources they use to find it, and to evaluate kidney stone-related smartphone apps based on their actionability, understandability, quality, and reliability. Methods: Google Trends was used to assess searches related to kidney stones and related smartphone applications (apps) from 2019 to 2021. A questionnaire aimed at ascertaining where patients obtain kidney stone-related information was posted on popular Facebook groups and one Reddit group. Seven popular kidney stone-related apps were evaluated for reliability, quality, actionability, and understandability. Univariate statistical analysis, search volume index, and descriptive statistics were used to assess correlations and impact of variables on outcomes of interest. Results: Between 2019 and 2021, the peak search volume index of kidney stones was in the summer and winter. Questionnaire participants obtain most information from their doctor (45%), Reddit and Facebook groups (43%), YouTube (9%), and smartphone apps (4%). 23% reported using a kidney stone app at least once to obtain information. The average smartphone app overall has poor reliability (2.43, P < 0.001) and quality (1.96, P = 0.039) and poor review of treatment options with side effects (1.36, P = 0.689), and does not encourage shared decision-making (2.57, P = 0.162). Poor actionability was found in all apps, and good understandability was found in 6 of the 7 apps. Conclusion: While physicians are still the most-used resource for patients, patients are increasingly using online platforms and smartphone applications. Urologists should consider engaging kidney stone patients through such platforms to provide reliable educational information. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the use of emergency departments (ED) worldwide. This study identifies the pandemic-related factors associated with the number of ED visits in mainland Portugal and each of its regions. We collected data on ED visits from March 2020 to March 2022. Data on incidence, vaccination, mobility, containment index, and Google search volume were retrieved from open online sources at different time points. We fitted a quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression model, and each variable was modeled separately and adjusted for time and month. There was a positive ED trend throughout the two years of the pandemic in mainland Portugal and each of its regions. In the mainland, during months with high workplace mobility, there were 10.5% more ED visits compared to months with average mobility. ED visits decreased in months with low mobility for retail and recreation, groceries and pharmacies, and transit compared to months of medium mobility. Portugal saw a reduction in ED utilization during the pandemic period, but with a positive trend from March 2020 to March 2022. The change in the population’s behavior of seeking the ED throughout the pandemic might be associated with mobility, incidence, and pandemic fatigue. Full article

Decreased air quality is connected to an increase in daily mortality rates. Thus, people’s behavioural response to sometimes elevated air pollution levels is vital. We aimed to analyse spatial and seasonal changes in air pollution-related information-seeking behaviour in response to nationwide reported air quality in Poland. Google Trends Search Volume Index data was used to investigate Poles’ interest in air pollution-related keywords. PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations measured across Poland between 2016 and 2019 as well as locations of monitoring stations were collected from the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection databases. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficients were used to measure the strength of spatial and seasonal relationships between reported air pollution levels and the popularity of search queries. The highest PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were observed in southern voivodeships and during the winter season. Similar trends were observed for Poles’ interest in air pollution-related keywords. Greater interest in air quality data in Poland strongly correlates with both higher regional and higher seasonal air pollution levels. It appears that Poles are socially aware of this issue and that their intensification of the information-seeking behaviour seems to indicate a relevant ad hoc response to variable threat severity levels. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fluctuations that occur in stock returns of US stock indices when there is an increase in the volume of Google internet searches for the phrase “quantitative easing” in the US. The exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model (EGARCH) was applied based on weekly data of stock indices using the three-factor model of Fama and French for the period of 1 January 2006 to 30 October 2020. The existence of a statistically significant relationship between searches and financial variables, especially in the stock market, is evident. The result is strong in three of the four stock indices studied. Specifically, the SVI index was statistically significant, with a positive trend for the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indices and a negative trend for the VIX index. Investor focus on quantitative easing (QE), as determined by Google metrics, seems to calm stock market volatility and increase stock returns. Although there is a large body of research using Google Trends as a crowdsourcing method of forecasting stock returns, this paper is the first to examine the relationship between the increase in internet searches of “quantitative easing” and stock market returns. This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on Bitcoin trading volume. Using data from Apple mobility trends and several time-series econometric models, we find that investors became active participants during the COVID-19 pandemic period and traded more bitcoins on days with low mobility associated with lockdown mandates. These results remain robust after controlling for stocks and gold returns, the VIX index, and the level of attention and sentiment toward Bitcoin, as measured by Google search frequencies and the tone of Tweets discussing Bitcoin. These results suggest that when individual investors have ample free time on their hands, they trade cryptocurrencies as a pastime and use the Bitcoin market as a form of entertainment. Moreover, our results have important implications concerning investors’ herding behavior and overconfidence leading to noise trader risks and bubbles typically accompanied by high trading volume in cryptocurrency markets. In this paper, we examine the impact of investors’ attention to COVID-19 on stock market returns and the moderating effect of national culture on this relationship. Using daily data from 34 countries over the period 23 January to 12 June 2020, and measuring investors’ attention with the Google search volume (GSV) of the word “coronavirus” for each country, we find that investors’ enhanced attention to the COVID-19 pandemic results in negative stock market returns. Further, measuring the national culture with the uncertainty avoidance index (the aspect of national culture which measures the cross-country differences in decision-making under stress and ambiguity), we find that the negative impact of investors’ attention on stock market returns is stronger in countries where investors possess higher uncertainty avoidance cultural values. Our findings imply that uncertainty avoidance cultural values of investors promote financial market instability amid the crisis. Full article

SARS-CoV-2 is a member of the family of coronaviruses. The first cases were recorded in Wuhan, China, between December 2019 and January 2020. Italy is one of the most affected countries in Europe. COVID-19 is a new challenge in modern dentistry. New guidelines are required in dental clinics to avoid contagion caused by cross-infections. A narrative review was performed using both primary sources, such as scientific articles and secondary ones, such as bibliographic indexes, web pages, and databases. The main search engines were PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar. Twelve articles were selected to develop the bibliographic review by applying pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Precautionary measures should be applied to control COVID-19 in clinical practice. Several authors have highlighted the importance of telephone triage and/or clinic questionnaires, body temperature measurement, usage of personal protective equipment, surface disinfection with ethanol between 62% and 71%, high-speed instruments equipped with an anti-retraction system, four-handed work, and large-volume cannulas for aspiration. Clinically, the use of a rubber dam is essential. FFP2 (or N95) and FFP3 respirators, if compared to surgical masks, provide greater protection for health workers against viral respiratory infections. Further accurate studies are needed to confirm this. Full article

This research observes a time varying relationship between stock returns, volatilities and the online search volume in regard to selected CESEE (Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European) stock markets. The main hypothesis of the research assumes that a feedback relationship exists between stock returns, volatilities and the investor’s attention variable (captured by the online search volume). Moreover, the relationship is assumed to be time varying due to changing market conditions. Previous research does not deal with the time-varying multi-directional relationship. Thus, the contribution to existing research consists of estimating the aforementioned relationship between return, volatility and the search volume series for selected CESEE countries by using a novel approach of spillover indices within the VAR (Vector AutoRegression) model framework. The results indicate that the Google search volume affects the risk series more than the return series on the selected markets. Full article

Data from the Google search engine enables the assessment of Google users’ interest in a specific topic. We analyzed the world trends in searches associated with the topics “antibiotics” and “probiotics” from January 2004 to June 2019, using Google Trends. We analyzed the yearly trends and seasonal variation. We performed an R-Spearman rank correlation analysis of the relative search volume (RSV) of the topics in 2015 with antibiotic consumption, health expenditure per capita, and the 2015 Human Development Index (HDI) of the country. The mean interest in the topic of antibiotics was equal to RSV = 57.5 ± 17.9, rising by 3.7 RSV/year (6.5%/year), while that of probiotics was RSV = 14.1 ± 7.9, which rose by 1.7 RSV/year (12.1%). The seasonal amplitude of antibiotics was equal to RSV = 9.8, while probiotics was RSV = 2.7. The seasonal peaks for both topics were observed in the cold months. The RSV of probiotics, but not antibiotics, was associated with antibiotic consumption (Rs = 0.35; p < 0.01), health expenditure (Rs = 0.41; p < 0.001), and HDI (Rs = 0.44; p < 0.001). Google users’ interest in antibiotic- and probiotic-related information increases from year to year, and peaks in cold months. The interest in probiotic-related information might be associated with antibiotic consumption, health expenditure, and the development status of the Google users’ country. Full article
