Background/Objectives: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often display heightened sensitivity to simple auditory stimuli, but have difficulty discriminating and integrating multiple phonological features (segmental: consonants and vowels; suprasegmental: lexical tones) at the syllable level, which negatively impacts their communication. This study aims to investigate the neural basis of segmental, suprasegmental and combinatorial speech processing challenges in Mandarin-speaking children with ASD compared with typically developing (TD) peers. Methods: Thirty children with ASD and thirty TD peers will complete a multi-feature oddball paradigm to elicit auditory ERP during passive listening. Stimuli include syllables with single (e.g., vowel only), dual (e.g., vowel + tone), and triple (consonant + vowel + tone) phonological deviations. Neural responses will be analyzed using temporal principal component analysis (t-PCA) to isolate overlapping ERP components (early/late MMN), and representational similarity analysis (RSA) to assess group differences in neural representational structure across feature conditions. Expected Outcomes: We adopt a dual-framework approach to hypothesis generation. First, from a theory-driven perspective, we integrate three complementary models, Enhanced Perceptual Functioning (EPF), Weak Central Coherence (WCC), and the Neural Complexity Hypothesis (NCH), to account for auditory processing in ASD. Specifically, we hypothesize that ASD children will show enhanced or intact neural discriminatory responses to isolated segmental deviations (e.g., vowel), but attenuated or delayed responses to suprasegmental (e.g., tone) and multi-feature deviants, with the most severe disruptions occurring in complex, multi-feature conditions. Second, from an empirically grounded, data-driven perspective, we derive our central hypothesis directly from the mismatch negativity (MMN) literature, which suggests reduced MMN amplitudes (with the exception of vowel deviants) and prolonged latencies accompanied by a diminished left-hemisphere advantage across all speech feature types in ASD, with the most pronounced effects in complex, multi-feature conditions. Significance: By testing alternative hypotheses and predictions, this exploratory study will clarify the extent to which speech processing differences in ASD reflect cognitive biases (local vs. global, per EPF/WCC/NCH) versus speech-specific neurophysiological disruptions. Findings will advance our understanding of the sensory and integrative mechanisms underlying communication difficulties in ASD, particularly in tonal language contexts, and may inform the development of linguistically tailored interventions. A complex microbial community gives the possibility to produce biogenic amines in traditional fermented foods. In this study, the metabolism mechanisms of biogenic amines during fermentation of fermented mandarin fish Chouguiyu were revealed based on the metabolic pathways and correlation analysis. Functional genes based on KEGG orthology related to biogenic amine metabolism were selected from the metagenome and were used to construct the biogenic amine metabolic pathways in Chouguiyu. A total of 91 and 75 genera were related to the synthesis and degradation of biogenic amines, respectively. High concentrations of cadaverine and putrescine were observed, while the other biogenic amines were detected in relatively low concentrations. The metabolic mechanisms of various biogenic amines were illuminated by correlation network maps between biogenic amines and microbial synthesis/degradation enzymes. Lactococcus, Flavobacterium, Tessaracoccus, and Yoonia could only degrade and not produce biogenic amines. Acinetobacter and Enterococcus possessed more abundant enzymes for degradation than synthesis. Amine oxidase (K00276), diamine N-acetyltransferase (K00657), and gamma-glutamylputrescine synthase (K09470) were the main biogenic amine degradation enzymes in the microbial community. Lactococcus garvieae, Flavobacterium gelidilacus, Tessaracoccus antarcticus, Yoonia vestfoldensis, Acinetobacter haemolyticus, and Enterococcus ureasiticus were the main microbial species for biogenic amine degradation and could be isolated as the potential strains for biogenic amine degradation in fermented foods. Teachers often raise their vocal volume to improve intelligibility or capture students’ attention. While this practice is common in second language (L2) teaching, its effects on tone perception remain understudied. To fill this gap, this study explores the effects of loud speech on Mandarin tone perception for L2 learners. Twenty-two native Mandarin speakers and twenty-two Thai L2 learners were tested on their perceptual accuracy and reaction time in identifying Mandarin tones in loud and normal modes. Results revealed a significant between-group difference: native speakers consistently demonstrated a ceiling effect across all tones, while L2 learners exhibited lower accuracy, particularly for Tone 3, the falling-rising tone. The loud speech had different impacts on the two groups. For native speakers, tone perception accuracy remained stable across different speech modes. In contrast, for L2 learners, loud speech significantly reduced the accuracy of Tone 3 identification and increased confusion between Tones 2 and 3. Reaction times in milliseconds were prolonged for all tones in loud speech for both groups. When subtracting the length of the tones, the delay of RT was evident only for Tones 3 and 4. Therefore, raising the speaking volume negatively affects the Mandarin tone perception of L2 learners, especially in distinguishing Tone 2 and Tone 3. Our findings have implications for both theories of L2 tone perception and pedagogical practices. Full article

Orange allergy is estimated to account for up to 3–4% of food allergies. Major allergens identified in orange (Citrus sinensis) include Cit s 1 (germin-like protein) and Cit s 2 (profilin), while Cit s 3 (non-specific lipid transfer protein, nsLTP) and Cit s 7 (gibberellin-regulated protein) have also been described. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence and IgE-binding capacity of germin-like proteins in citrus fruits other than oranges. We describe five patients with immediate allergic reactions after orange ingestion. All patients underwent skin prick tests (SPT) to aeroallergens and common food allergens, prick-by-prick testing with orange, lemon, and mandarin (pulp, peel, seeds), total IgE, specific IgE (sIgE), anaphylaxis scoring (oFASS), and the Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire (FAQLQ-AF). Protein extracts from peel and pulp of orange, lemon, and mandarin were analyzed by Bradford assay, SDS-PAGE, and IgE immunoblotting using patient sera. Selected bands were identified by peptide mass fingerprinting. A 23 kDa band was recognized by all five patients in orange (pulp and peel), lemon (peel), and mandarin (peel). This band was consistent with Cit s 1, a germin-like protein already annotated in the IUIS allergen database for orange but not for lemon or mandarin. Peptide fingerprinting confirmed the germin-like identity of the 23 kDa bands in all three citrus species. Germin-like proteins of approximately 23 kDa were identified as IgE-binding components in peel extracts of orange, lemon, and mandarin, and in orange pulp. These findings suggest a potential shared allergen across citrus species that may contribute to allergic reactions independent of LTP sensitization. Full article

Siniperca chuatsi is an important high-quality freshwater aquaculture species in China. In nature, it feeds exclusively on live food. In this study, domesticated juvenile S. chuatsi were divided into three groups and fed live food (group L), compound feed (group C), or a mixed diet (group M) for three months to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation to compound feed. Histopathological examination revealed that compound feed consumption induced looser liver cell arrangement, hepatocyte morphological irregularities, and vacuolization. A total of 1033 and 1428 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and 187 and 184 differential metabolites (DMs), were identified in the C vs. L and C vs. M groups, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the significantly and commonly enriched metabolic pathways shared by both comparison groups were predominantly involved in amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolisms. Metabolomic analysis demonstrated that the significantly and commonly enriched metabolic pathways shared by both comparison groups were the arachidonic acid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, and PPAR signalling pathways. Integrated omics analysis showed that the PPAR signalling pathway was the only significantly co-enriched pathway across both omics datasets. This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms of compound feed adaptation and provides theoretical support for selecting feed traits in S. chuatsi. Full article

Telemedicine in emergency contexts presents unique challenges, particularly in multilingual and low-resource settings where accurate, clinical understanding and triage decision support are critical. This paper introduces TriagE-NLU, a novel multilingual natural language understanding system designed to perform both semantic parsing and clinical intervention classification from emergency dialogues. The system is built on a federated learning architecture to ensure data privacy and adaptability across regions and is trained using TriageX, a synthetic, clinically grounded dataset covering five languages (English, Spanish, Romanian, Arabic, and Mandarin). TriagE-NLU integrates fine-tuned multilingual transformers with a hybrid rules-and-policy decision engine, enabling it to parse structured medical information (symptoms, risk factors, temporal markers) and recommend appropriate interventions based on recognized patterns. Evaluation against strong multilingual baselines, including mT5, mBART, and XLM-RoBERTa, demonstrates superior performance by TriagE-NLU, achieving F1 scores of 0.91 for semantic parsing and 0.89 for intervention classification, along with 0.92 accuracy and a BLEU score of 0.87. These results validate the system’s robustness in multilingual emergency telehealth and its ability to generalize across diverse input scenarios. This paper establishes a new direction for privacy-preserving, AI-assisted triage systems. Full article

The molecular identification of valuable genotypes is an important problem of germplasm management. In this study, we evaluated the potential of 11 universal primer pairs for the DNA barcoding of locally derived cultivars of subtropical crops (actinidia, feijoa, citrus, and tea). A total of 47 accessions (elite cultivars, forms, and breeding lines) of these four genera were included in the study. The efficiency of the following universal primers was assessed using Sanger sequencing: ITS-p5/ITS-u4, ITS-p5/ITS-u2, ITS-p3/ITS-u4, 23S,4.5S&5S, 16S, petB/petD, rpl23/rpl2.l, rpl2 intron, rpoC1 intron, trnK intron, and trnE-UUC/trnT-GUU. Among these primers, trnE-UUC/trnT-GUU showed greater intraspecific polymorphisms, while rpl2 intron and 16S displayed the lowest polymorphism levels in all crops. In addition, the 23S,4.5S & 5S, and rpoC1 intron were efficient for intraspecific analysis of tea and actinidia species. Using five efficient chloroplast primers, a total of 22/6 SNPs/InDels were observed in tea accessions, 45/17 SNPs/InDels in actinidia, 23/3 SNPs/InDels in mandarins, and 5/4 SNPs/InDels in feijoa. These results will be useful for the further development of DNA barcodes of related accessions. Full article

A 56-day trial was conducted to assess the effects of rice straw (RS) and bamboo flour (BF) on growth performance, water quality, gill histology, and the bacterial community of water and the intestine of mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) in biofloc technology systems. The results showed that mandarin fish in the RS and BF groups had comparable survival rates of 100.00 ± 0.00 and 93.33 ± 3.85%; feed conversion ratios of 1.13 ± 0.02 and 1.40 ± 0.15; and weight gain rates of 112.21 ± 1.56 and 100.92 ± 6.45%, respectively. From days 11 to 56 of the farming period, the BF group was more effective than the RS group in removing total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and NO2-N, maintaining TAN levels below 0.24 ± 0.05 mg/L. During the early stage of the experiment, the TAN level in the RS group was higher; however, with the supplementation of a carbon source, it gradually decreased and eventually stabilized at 0.13 ± 0.03 mg/L later in the farming period. The secondary gill lamella in the RS group was curved and showed hyperplasia, and the basal gill lamellae showed an increase in the volume of interlamellar cell mass in the BF group. Genes related to denitrification (narG, napA, nirS, nirK, and nosZ) and anammox showed higher expression levels in the BF group than in the RS group, although the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The results of 16S rRNA sequencing research showed that both treatment groups’ intestinal and water bacterial communities had comparable levels of richness and diversity. Pseudomonas mosselii was the dominant bacterial species in the water. In the BF group, the dominant intestinal species were Bacillus halodurans and Caldalkalibacillus thermarum, while in the RS group, the dominant species was Plesiomonas shigelloides. In conclusion, rice straw and bamboo flour are applicable in BFT systems for mandarin fish culture, with good growth performance and water quality. The BF group showed higher nitrogen removal efficiency and denitrification gene expression than the RS group. Full article

Mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) are known to exhibit distinct physiological and immunological adaptations to environmental stressors, but the underlying molecular and microbial mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we integrated transcriptome and microbiome analyses to investigate adaptations across three geographically distinct mandarin fish groups: Guangdong (G), Qiupu (Q), and native Taihu (T). Liver RNA sequencing revealed 5339 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between T and G and 1531 DEGs between T and Q. Functional enrichment analysis revealed group-specific responses. Specifically, DEGs from T vs. G were linked to small-molecule metabolism and innate immunity whereas the DEGs from T vs. Q were related to immune regulation and chromatin organization. The concurrent 16S rRNA sequencing of the intestinal microbiota identified 2680 amplicon sequence variants, with principal coordinate analysis showing distinct clustering (31.77% variance). Group T had higher Firmicutes abundance whereas groups G and Q had a higher relative abundance of Fusobacteriota. Correlation networks revealed key microbe–gene interactions, including positive links between Lactobacillus and immune genes in group T and negative associations with Romboutsia. These findings suggest that enhanced immune homeostasis and metabolic flexibility in group T may result from coordinated host gene expression and Lactobacillus-driven microbiome modulation. We provide new insights into the mechanisms of adaptation in mandarin fish and identify potential biomarkers for enhancing aquaculture resilience. Full article

Bilingual communication is increasingly prevalent in this globally connected world, where cultural exchanges and international interactions are unavoidable. Existing automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are often limited to single languages. However, the growing demand for bilingual ASR in human–computer interactions, particularly in medical services, has become indispensable. This article addresses this need by creating an application programming interface (API)-based platform using VOSK, a popular open-source single-language ASR toolkit, to efficiently deploy a self-evaluated bilingual ASR system that seamlessly handles both primary and secondary languages in tasks like Mandarin–English mixed-speech recognition. The mixed error rate (MER) is used as a performance metric, and a workflow is outlined for its calculation using the edit distance algorithm. Results show a remarkable reduction in the Mandarin–English MER, dropping from ∼65% to under 13%, after implementing the self-evaluation framework and mixed-language algorithms. These findings highlight the importance of a well-designed system to manage the complexities of mixed-language speech recognition, offering a promising method for building a bilingual ASR system using existing monolingual models. The framework might be further extended to a trilingual or multilingual ASR system by preparing mixed-language datasets and computer development without involving complex training. Full article

This study investigates the complex interactions between environmental, genetic, and structural factors that influence two key parameters: the density of Phytophthora spp. propagules per gram of dry soil (NPSS) and the number of colonies (NC). Using advanced statistical approaches, we examined the combined effects of variables such as soil moisture, dry weight, temporal fluctuations, and rootstocks. The results show a significant linear relationship between NPSS and soil moisture, as well as a strong positive correlation between NPSS and NC. Genetic analyses reveal a predominant contribution of environmental factors to trait variability, with high phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and low broad-sense heritability. Mixed models highlight the synergistic impact of soil moisture, NC, and dry soil weight on NPSS, as well as significant temporal effects. Mediation analysis confirms that soil moisture influences NPSS primarily through an indirect effect transmitted by NC, with a mediated proportion exceeding 94%. Finally, multivariate analysis reveals significant differences between rootstocks, with Citrus Volkameriana B2 28613 (R4) and Mandarin Sunki x P.T. B2 38581 (R7) standing out as the most performant. These results highlight the importance of an integrated management of environmental variables and rootstocks to optimize soil productivity and agronomic quality. The implications of this study provide a solid foundation for guiding genetic improvement and soil management strategies, balancing environmental constraints and the opportunities offered by targeted genetic selection. Low-frequency alternating electromagnetic fields (LF-AEMF) represent an innovative processing technology with significant potential for extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by modulating key physiological processes. In this study, the impact of the LF-AEMF intensities (1300, 1800, and 2500 V) on the postharvest preservation of satsuma mandarins was evaluated. Compared to the control group, the LF-AEMF-treated samples exhibited reduced weight loss (0.62% vs. 2.11%), respiration rate (32.73 vs. 40.08 mg/kg·h), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content (40.80 vs. 34.87 nmol/g) after 40 days of storage. In addition, LF-AEMF treatment also effectively preserved titratable acidity (TA) (0.34% vs. 0.30%), vitamin C (Vc) content (7.77 vs. 7.05 g/100 g), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity (79.757 vs. 62.395 U/g). E-nose analysis and low-field NMR further revealed that the application of LF-AEMF effectively facilitated the superior preservation of the intrinsic flavor profile of the satsuma mandarins and mitigated the loss of free water within the fruit. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for the potential application of LF-AEMF in extending the storage life of citrus fruits, which may also be applicable to other seasonal fruits and vegetables that require long-term storage. Bare nouns representing kinship terms (KNs) and body parts (BPNs) can be assumed to project a null possessor argument, which allows for the interpretation of such nouns relative to other linguistically present NPs. In Vietnamese, the distribution of KNs and BPNs is subject to different locality conditions and leads to the analysis of null possessors with KNs as covert anaphors, while null possessors with BPNs are null pronominals (pro). This contrasts with Mandarin Chinese, where it has been suggested that null possessors of KNs and BPNs are two different types of null anaphors. The observed distributional differences and analyses of bare KNs and BPNs in Vietnamese vs. Chinese raise questions of parametric variation with regard to null elements with parallel interpretive properties and also whether linking mechanisms may occur with other bare nouns without the projection of null possessors that are subject to binding theoretic locality restrictions. This study investigates the semantic development of V-diao in Taiwan Mandarin-speaking children, focusing on how they acquire both literal and non-literal meanings. Three key factors influencing this acquisition—type, metaphoricality, and context—were examined. This study recruited sixty elementary school children, divided into three age groups (7, 9, and 11 years old), along with twenty graduate students serving as an adult control group. Two truth value judgment tasks were employed: the Word-in-Sentences (WISE) task, which presents sentences containing the V-diao construction, and the Word-in-Scenarios (WISC) task, which uses stories and pictures as additional aids. The results indicated that V-diao1 was the easiest for children to comprehend, followed by V-diao2, while V-diao3 and V-diao4 were more challenging. Literal meanings of V-diao were found to be easier to acquire than non-literal ones, highlighting the metaphorical effect. Additionally, participants performed better on the WISE task than the WISC task, suggesting that contextual aids like stories and pictures did not enhance performance. These findings provide insights into the semantic development of Mandarin-speaking children and the role of metaphorical and contextual factors in language acquisition. Full article

The oriental fruit fly (B. dorsalis) poses a critical threat to domestic mandarin trade, necessitating effective phytosanitary measures. This study evaluated ethyl formate (EF) and phosphine (PH3) fumigation as alternative disinfestation methods, either alone or in combination with cold treatment, using B. scutellata, pumpkin fruit fly, as a surrogate species. Eggs and third-instar larvae were tested under both naked and inoculated conditions. Results indicated that larvae were more susceptible to treatment than eggs. The LT99% values for cold treatment (1.7 °C) were 8.6 and 12.4 days under naked and inoculated conditions, respectively. EF LCt99% values were 265.7 and 1111.0 g h/m3. EF (LCt50%) combined with PH3 (1.0 g/m3) achieved up to 100% mortality, while EF (LCt50%) followed by cold treatment (1.7 °C for 1–3 days) significantly enhanced mortality compared to cold treatment alone. This study offers foundational data to optimize EF-based quarantine treatments against B. dorsalis, supporting shorter treatment times and more cost-effective quarantine practices. Future studies should validate these findings under practical field conditions. Full article
