In the context of retail logistics, achieving operational efficiency and cost reductions requires distinguishing between value-added (VA) and non-value-added (NVA) activities. VA activities are those that bring products closer to their correct position on the shelf, with their price updated, guaranteeing their availability to customers. All other activities are considered as NVA activities. NVA activities include activities such as unnecessary handling, waiting, excessive movement, and stock mismanagement. This study is based on an on-site experience conducted in a Modelo supermarket, part of the Sonae group and one of Portugal’s largest retailers, which reinforces the practical significance of its findings. By analyzing various aspects of internal retail logistics, this research challenges traditional definitions of value and waste—typically applied in manufacturing—and proposes a new approach tailored to retail operations. Six specific types of NVA activities were identified in this context. Applying this classification model, a multi-moment analysis was conducted to quantify the labor utilization in VA tasks, offering insights into process inefficiencies. The proposed model provides a systematic framework for categorizing retail logistics operations, supporting decision-makers in streamlining workflows, improving productivity, and optimizing resource allocation. Beyond academic discourse, this model serves as a practical tool for retailers aiming to enhance their internal logistics efficiency. Full article

Although Thailand is one of the world’s leading exporters of frozen shrimp, the production process and management of the production line remain problematic, due to high operation costs, which may make it difficult for Thailand to compete with other export countries. The aim of this research was therefore to improve the production process for frozen shrimp. Value stream mapping (VSM) was utilized to identify the activity processes, from raw material to the customer, and line balancing (LB) was employed to arrange the production line to achieve process improvements. The ECRS (Eliminate, Combine, Rearrange, Simplify) technique was applied to manage and ameliorate the production process. The result was a suitable production process for frozen shrimp in which the profitability to entrepreneurs can be increased through lean improvement techniques. VSM revealed that the efficiency of the total cycle time could be decreased by approximately 61.72%, and that the lead time could be reduced by about 48.8%. Improvements to the frozen shrimp process through LB could yield an accuracy of up to 90.50%. The ECRS technique helped in arranging new processing to achieve improvements; value-added (VA), non-value-added (NVA), and necessary non-value-added (NNVA) tasks showed that the efficiency of the production process could rise to 46.37%, 25%, and 92.85%, respectively. Entrepreneurs will be able to run their manufacturing processes and achieve high production efficiency in the future using the methodologies and management practices described here. Full article

The construction industry is growing with the shortfall issues of productivity, functionality, and cost. Precast construction has significant potential to address these issues by incorporating lean principles. Lean focuses on enhancing value at every stage of the construction process. By combining these two approaches, the construction industry can effectively tackle these challenges. This research aims to achieve two main objectives: (1). To establish a connection between lean tools and non-value added (NVA) activities, (2). To prioritize these lean tools based on their relevance to major NVA activities. To accomplish this, an extensive review of the literature was conducted to examine the adoption of lean tools in various NVA tasks. A questionnaire survey was then employed to identify the root causes of NVA activities (criteria) and determine the most suitable lean tools for addressing each specific criterion. The findings from multi-criteria decision decision-making (MCDM) analysis highlight that total quality management (TQM) is ranked first in two methods while continuous improvement (CI) ranked first in one method. Comparing all the scenarios, it is observed that 5S and CI have been fluctuating between two and three rankings, and the remaining ranks have very minute changes. Based on all these lean tools are prioritized as TQM > CI > 5S > JIT > VSM > PY. Full article

Healthcare makes a significant contribution to the social, economic and environmental benefits of communities. It is correspondingly a significant employer and consumer of both energy and consumables, often at high costs. Lean, a quality improvement methodology focuses on the elimination of non-value add (NVA) activities (steps that do not add value from the perspective of the customer) to improve the flow of people, information or goods. Increasingly, Lean thinking is evolving from its initial focus on eliminating NVA to a more holistic approach that encompasses sustainability. However, little work has been undertaken intentionally, including environmental sustainability outcomes in Lean healthcare interventions. Realist review methodology facilitates an understanding of the extent to which an intervention works, for whom, in what context, why and how, and has proven useful in research relating to Lean interventions in healthcare settings. This protocol provides details for a realist review that will enable an understanding of the specific contexts in which certain mechanisms are activated that enable the inclusion of environmental sustainability outcomes in the design of Lean healthcare improvement interventions. In Ireland, the extent of outpatient orthopedic waiting lists results in long waiting times for patients, delays in processing referrals, and variation in the consultant caseload. At the study site, the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) Lean Six Sigma framework was applied to evaluate sources of Non-Value-Added (NVA) activity in the process of registering and triaging patients referred to the trauma orthopedic service from the Emergency Department. A pre- (October–December 2021)/post- (April–August 2022) intervention design was employed, utilizing Gemba, Process Mapping, and the TIMWOODS tool. Embracing a person-centered approach, stakeholder Voice of Customer feedback was sought at each stage of the improvement process. Following data collection and analysis, a co-designed pilot intervention (March 2022) was implemented, consisting of a new triage template, dedicated trauma clinic slots, a consultant triage roster, and a new option to refer directly to physiotherapy services. This resulted in the total wait time of patients for review being reduced by 34%, a 51% reduction in the process steps required for registering, and an increase in orthopedic consultant clinic capacity of 22%. The reduction in NVA activities in the process and the increase in management options for triaging consultants have delivered a more efficient trauma and orthopedic pathway. Full article

Aspilia grazielae (J. U. Santos) is an endemic plant species in Morro do Urucum in the Pantanal wetland (Brazil). A. grazielae is used for the restoration of areas impacted by iron mining activities. This study evaluates the diversity (composition, value and abundance) of endophytic fungal communities, considering parts of the plant and soil condition. The leaves and roots of A. grazielae were collected from native vegetation areas (NVA) and recovery areas (RCA) in Morro do Urucum. Illumina sequencing technology was used to investigate variation in endophytic fungal biodiversity. The operational taxonomic units detected in NVA ranged from 183 to 263 (leaf) and 115 to 285 (root), while RCA samples ranged from 200 to 282 (leaf) and 156 to 348 (root). Ascomycota phylum was the most common species among all plant samples. The most significant classes identified were Lecanoromycetes and Dothideomycetes that differed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) according to their plant hosts and soil stress. The relative abundance of Pestalotiopsis (Sordariomycetes class) and Stereocaulon (Lecanoromycetes class) genera was influenced by the iron mining activities according to the leaf samples analysed. However, the abundance and wealth of endophytic fungal communities in A. grazielae from RCA were evidence that could explain their high resilience to environmental disturbances and the source-sink dynamics of fungal propagules. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of concentric, eccentric, and isometric exercise protocols on the postneedling soreness (PNS) after the dry needling (DN) of latent myofascial trigger points (MTrP) in the medial gastrocnemius muscle. A randomized clinical trial was carried out. Volunteers, ≥18 years old, with a latent MTrP in the medial gastrocnemius muscle were included. Subjects with contraindications to DN, active MTrPs, and/or other treatments in MTrPs in the 3 months prior to recruitment were excluded. A total of 69 participants were randomly allocated to four groups, where post-DN intervention consisted of an eccentric, concentric, or isometric exercise, or no exercise, and they were assessed for PNS intensity (visual analog scale (pVAS)), pressure pain threshold (PPT, analog algometer), pain intensity (nVAS), and local twitch responses (LTRs) during DN, as well as demographics and anthropometrics. The mixed-model analyses of variance showed significant interaction between time and pVAS, and between time and PPT (p < 0.001). While the multivariate test confirmed that PNS and PPT improved over time within each group, specifically between 6–12 h post-intervention, the post hoc analyses did not show significant differences between groups. The mixed-model analyses of covariance showed a significant nVAS effect (p < 0.01) on PNS decrease, and some effect of the LTRs (p < 0.01) and sex (p = 0.08) on PPT changes. All groups improved PNS and PPT, but none of them showed a greater improvement above the others. The most dramatic decrease was observed between 6–12 h post-exercise, although concentric and eccentric exercise had an effect immediately after the intervention. Between all potential modifiers, pain during DN significantly influenced PNS progression, while LTRs and sex seemed to determine PPT course over time. Full article

Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), a subtype of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, requires repeated treatment. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate and compare vision-targeted quality of life (QOL) at baseline and after 6 months of treatment in patients with PCV. Naive PCV patients were recruited. Visual functions assessed were distance visual acuity (DVA), near visual acuity (NVA), contrast sensitivity (CS), reading speed (RS), and QOL at baseline and after 6 months of treatment. Thirty patients (average age of 67.62 ± 8.05 years) revealed mean DVA and NVA improvements of 0.24 logMAR and 0.30 logMAR, respectively. Mean CS and RS improved by 0.39 log contrast and 25.58 words per minute, respectively. The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI-VFQ-25) composite score significantly increased from a baseline of 66.73 ± 13.74 to 73.54 ± 14.26. Twenty-eight of the patients showed overall improvement in QOL score by 5 units or more or remained stable. Subscales of NEI-VFQ-25 significantly improved, with general vision, mental health, and role difficulties improving by 10 or more units. The present pilot study reports a significant improvement of QOL in PCV patients after 6 months of treatment, with mental health, role difficulties, social functioning, and distance vision activities being the most improved subscales. Building information modeling (BIM) is deemed a useful innovation for technological and sustainable development of the economy. It is partially used in building projects in Singapore, although its implementation is mandated by the local government, resulting in various wastes and suboptimal productivity. Little is known about how non-value adding (NVA) BIM implementation practices were perceived by the local practitioners and how these practices affected productivity in building projects in Singapore. This study aimed to identify critical NVA BIM implementation activities and investigate the criticality of their resulting wastes to productivity performance in the current project delivery process in Singapore. The results from a questionnaire survey of 73 experts and four post-survey interviews in Singapore revealed that 38 NVA BIM implementation activities were deemed critical, among which “lack of involvement by contractors to contribute site knowledge” in the design development phase was ranked top; the top five resulting wastes with highest criticalities were reworks/abortive works, requests for information, design deficiencies, defects, and waiting/idle time. Furthermore, an independent-samples t-test was conducted to examine whether construction firms and upfront stakeholders perceived the NVA activities differently. It was discovered that most NVA activities exerted more agreement from construction firms than upfront non-construction organizations. Six strategies were proposed to mitigate the NVA activities and wastes. The findings can help practitioners identify weak areas of their BIM implementation practices and prioritize resources accordingly to eliminate the wastes and foster sustainability, as well as help overseas project teams, with minor adjustments, customize their own NVA BIM implementation activities and management strategies. Like many other countries, the presence of wasteful activities is very common in Kazakhstan’s construction industry. This severely affects the productivity of construction processes. Lean methodology maximizes the value of a process by minimizing wasteful or non-value adding (NVA) activities. This study aims to explore and quantify the impact NVA items on construction productivity. Several observations were made for construction processes in Astana, Kazakhstan to investigate and quantify various types of wasteful activities. Moreover, a survey was conducted to examine the general understanding of wasteful activities and Lean methods within the construction industry in Kazakhstan. In terms of wasteful activities, a similarity was found between the observed construction processes and survey results. Furthermore, apart from the commonly found seven types of wasteful activities, some other sources of waste, such as “preparation” and “break”, were found from the observations. Finally, wasteful activities were mapped with commonly used Lean tools, as found in the literature, so that productivity can be improved by minimizing NVA activities. From the mapping and the survey results, value stream mapping (VSM) was found to be the most effective Lean tool, since it facilitates increased visualization. Full article

Natural angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory peptides, which are derived from marine products, are useful as antihypertensive drugs. Nevertheless, the activities of these natural peptides are relatively low, which limits their applications. The aim of this study was to prepare efficient ACE-inhibitory peptides from sea cucumber-modified hydrolysates by adding exogenous proline according to a facile plastein reaction. When 40% proline (w/w, proline/free amino groups) was added, the modified hydrolysates exhibited higher ACE-inhibitory activity than the original hydrolysates. Among the modified hydrolysates, two novel efficient ACE-inhibitory peptides, which are namely PNVA and PNLG, were purified and identified by a sequential approach combining a sephadex G-15 gel column, reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS), before we conducted confirmatory studies with synthetic peptides. The ACE-inhibitory activity assay showed that PNVA and PNLG exhibited lower IC50 values of 8.18 ± 0.24 and 13.16 ± 0.39 μM than their corresponding truncated analogs (NVA and NLG), respectively. Molecular docking showed that PNVA and PNLG formed a larger number of hydrogen bonds with ACE than NVA and NLG, while the proline at the N-terminal of peptides can affect the orientation of the binding site of ACE. The method developed in this study may potentially be applied to prepare efficient ACE-inhibitory peptides, which may play a key role in hypertension management. Full article
