Pistachio (Pistacia vera) is widely consumed among tree nuts but capable of triggering severe IgE-mediated reactions in allergic individuals. Due to the similarity of cashew-borne and pistachio-borne allergen proteins and DNA, traditional detection methods, such as ELISA and PCR, often suffer from cross-reactivity, limiting their ability to discriminate between these two allergens. This study presents a sensitive LC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous detection of pistachio and cashew allergens in processed food with a screening detection limit (SDL) equal to 1 mg/kg. The method was validated for specificity, SDL, β error, precision, and ruggedness, and applied to various matrices (cereals, chocolate, sauces, and meat products). Ruggedness testing showed that all considered parameters must be carefully monitored by the operator, and sample preparation must be carried out without any modification in parameter values, under strictly controlled conditions. Good reproducibility was achieved for pistachio detection, while ongoing investigations should be carried out to overcome existing constraints for cashew. The LC-MS/MS method described in this work is a discriminatory method suitable for official food allergen control to selectively differentiate pistachio from cashew allergens, overcoming the limitations of PCR and ELISA when cross-reactivity occurs. It represents a validated tool for pistachio detection and a promising approach toward improving cashew allergen analysis. Full article

Pistacia lentiscus var. chia resin (Chios Mastic Gum—CMG) is a natural aromatic resin that has been utilized in traditional medicine for more than 2.5 millennia, as it exhibits a wide range of pharmacological properties. In this study, various quantities of Chios Mastic Gum (3.5, 6.5, and 10 wt%) were encapsulated in electrospun fibers of poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) to develop functional fibrous mats with multiple potential applications. The morphological analysis of composite membranes was conducted through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the formation of uniform fibers and incremental diameter size in samples with a higher concentration of CMG. The encapsulation efficiency was assessed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and showed an exceptionally high loading efficiency (87–88%). The cytotoxicity of CMG-loaded nanofibers was tested in human embryonic kidney cell line HEK293 and human hepatocarcinoma cell line HepG2 using the MTT assay. In both cases, a high concentration of encapsulated CMG led to a statistically significant reduction in cell viability. Full article

Background/Objectives: Nutrigenomics explores how dietary components influence genome function, especially via epigenetic mechanisms like DNA methylation. A key challenge is identifying healthy food-derived molecules capable of counteracting epigenetic damage from harmful dietary elements. Pistachio nuts (Pistacia vera L.), particularly the Bronte variety from Sicily, are rich in antioxidant polyphenols. In this study we used a methylomic approach to assess the nutrigenomic potential of a hydrophilic extract from Bronte pistachio (BPHE) in a model of human intestinal epithelium, as well as its capacity to modulate arsenic (As)-induced epigenotoxicity. Methods: BPHE was obtained via ethanol/water Soxhlet extraction. CaCo-2 cells were treated with BPHE, alone and after exposure to sodium arsenite. The methylation pattern of the genomic DNA was assessed by methylation-sensitive arbitrarily primed PCR and the methylomic signature was defined by Next-generation bisulfite sequencing. Results: BPHE alone did not alter DNA methylation pattern but, at the highest dose, modulated the changes induced by As. The identification of differentially methylated gene promoters in cell treatment vs. untreated controls revealed that BPHE and As primarily induced hyper-methylation, with a synergistic effect when combined. In particular, all the treatments increased methylation levels of gene categories such as pseudogenes, key genes of specific pathways, genes for zinc-finger proteins, homeobox proteins, kinases, antisense RNA, and miRNA. Notably, in co-treatment with As, BPHE promoted hypo-methylation of genes involved in tumor suppression, detoxification, mitochondrial function, and cell division. Conclusions: These findings suggest that Bronte pistachio polyphenols may epigenetically steer gene expression toward a protective profile, reducing risks of genomic instability and disease. This supports their potential as nutraceuticals to counter harmful epigenetic effects of toxic food components like arsenic. Full article

The incidence of allergic diseases has increased notably in recent years. The reasons for this increase include air pollution, diet, and infectious factors. This study aims to analyze the interactions between aeroallergens, environmental pollutants, and meteorological factors and their impact on allergenic sensitization in Toledo, Spain. An aerobiological study was conducted over the past 30 years (1994–2023) using a Burkard collector and the SEAIC (Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology) methodology. Meteorological data were obtained from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and pollutant data were acquired from the Castilla-La Mancha Air Quality Monitoring Network. Patients presenting with seasonal allergic symptoms at the University Hospital of Toledo were selected for skin testing with various types of airborne pollen. A total of twenty pollen taxa were identified in the Toledo atmosphere, as follows: Cupressaceae (26.53%); Olea europaea (21.62%); Quercus (21.12%); Poaceae (10.30%); Urticaceae (2.58%); Plantago (2.48%); Platanus (2.00%); Amaranthaceae (1.72%); Rumex (1.68%); and Morus, Pistacia, Populus, Artemisia, Fraxinus, Alnus, Carex, and Ericaceae (less than 1% each). The average temperature increased by 1.2 °C, while the level of precipitation remained stable. Among all pollutants, only a moderate increase in ozone levels was observed; however, the concentrations of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides decreased. The prevalence of pollen sensitization in allergic patients ranged from 8% for Pinus nigra to 84% for Phleum pratense. In conclusion, the rise in temperature due to climate change, coupled with high concentrations of pollutants such as ozone, can result in increased concentrations of the main types of wind-borne pollen. Thus, this can lead to a greater sensitivity to pollen and, consequently, more people becoming allergic to pollen. Full article

This study focused on the response mechanism of plants in karst ecosystems under rock stress, and explored the influence of aboveground rocks on the root phenotype and leaf water potential of plants. By quantifying the root characteristics of a total of 9 plant species in 3 types of vegetation areas, this study found: (1) The root biomass of grassland plants (Heteropogon contortus, Bidens pilosa, and Imperata cylindrical) in the near-rock area was on average 17.2% higher than that in the far-rock area. The lateral extension of roots was 27.8% lower, the vertical extension was on average 16.9% higher, and the total root bifurcation ratio (Rb) was on average 11.5% higher, respectively, compared to the far-rock area. (2) The root biomass of shrubland plants (Rubus mesogaeus, Spiraea martini, and Pyracantha fortuneana) in the near-rock area was on average 14.5% higher than the far-rock area. The average lateral extension of the root system was on average 17.5% lower, while there was no significant difference in the vertical extension. The Rb was on average 10.5% higher. (3) The root characteristics of forestland trees (Pistacia weinmanniifolia, Pinus yunnensis, and Carpinus turczaninowii) were significantly different from those of grassland and shrubland (p < 0.001), but the differences between the near-rock area and the far-rock area were not significant. The predawn and midday leaf water potential data showed that the plants in near-rock area of the grassland were 0.07 ± 0.03 (mean ± SD) MPa and 0.16 ± 0.07 MPa higher than those in the far-rock area, respectively, and the shrubland area was 0.12 ± 0.06 MPa and 0.20 ± 0.08 MPa higher, while there was no significant difference in the forestland. This study confirmed that aboveground rocks significantly enhanced the leaf water status of plants in arid environments by influencing root biomass, extension, and bifurcation ratio. This discovery provides a new perspective for understanding the survival mechanism of plants in karst areas. Full article

Pistachio nuts are among the 50 best foods with the highest antioxidant potential. They have a balanced content of mono- (~70%) and polyunsaturated (~20%) fatty acids, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as tocopherols, phytosterols, and phenolic compounds, which have shown rapid accessibility in the stomach. Pistachio consumption provides several health benefits, primarily due to its antioxidant properties and high content of essential nutrients. In this study, we analyzed the mineral composition, total phenolic content (TP), antioxidant activity (AA), and UHPLC/MS-MS polyphenolic profile of three Argentinian pistachio crops. Additionally, the physicochemical parameters and the elemental profiles of the growing soils were determined, as they influence mineral uptake and the synthesis of bioactive compounds in pistachio kernels. The TP was not significantly modified by the growing soils, with Crop3 presenting the highest TP content (276 ± 14 mg GA/100 g DW). Crop3 exhibited 18% higher TP content compared to Crop2. Similarly, FRAP values ranged from 28.0 to 36.5 mmol TE/100 g DW, with Crop1 showing a 30% increase compared to Crop2. DPPH values varied from 19.0 to 24.3 mmol TE/100 g DW, with Crop1 displaying 28% higher activity than Crop2. However, the polyphenolic profile was similar for all crops analyzed. Thirty compounds were identified; only Crop 1 contained the flavanone eriodyctiol and the isoflavone genistein, while the flavanone naringenin and the flavone luteolin were identified in Crop1 and Crop3. Regarding mineral content, the pistachio kernels mainly contained K, Ca, and Mg. Multivariate analyses revealed distinct elemental and antioxidant profiles among crops. LDA achieved classification accuracies of 77.7% for soils and 74.4% for kernels, with Pb, Zn, Cu, Rb, Sr, and Mn as key discriminants. CCA confirmed strong soil–kernel mineral correlations (r = 1), while GPA showed higher congruence between antioxidant traits and kernel composition than with soil geochemistry. These findings underscore the importance of soil composition in determining the nutritional quality of pistachio kernels, thereby supporting the beneficial health effects associated with pistachio consumption. Climate change intensifies water scarcity and soil salinization, threatening agriculture and livestock systems, especially in arid Mediterranean regions. Halophytes and salt-tolerant plants offer sustainable alternatives to support ruminant health and productivity where traditional crops fail, helping mitigate climate impacts. This work evaluated seasonality effects on the biochemical properties, including proximate composition, minerals, antioxidant properties, and the phenolic composition of the aerial organs of halophytes and salt-tolerant species, aiming at their future exploitation in ruminant production as novel nutraceutical or phytotherapeutic products. Target species included four halophytic species according to the eHaloph database (Calystegia soldanella (L.) R. Br. 1810, Medicago marina L. 1753, Plantago coronopus L. 1753, and Limoniastrum monopetalum (L.) Boiss. 1848) and five salt-tolerant plants (Pistacia lentiscus L. 1753, Cladium mariscus (L.) Pohl 1809, Inula crithmoides L. (syn. Limbarda crithmoides Dumort. 1827), Helichrysum italicum subsp. picardii (Boiss. & Reut.) Franco 1984, and Crucianella maritima L. 1753). H. italicum, M. marina, and C. soldanella appear well-suited for nutraceutical applications, while P. lentiscus, L. monopetalum, and C. mariscus hold promise for the development of, for example, phytotherapeutic products. This research underscores the significance of seasonal and species-specific variations in nutrient and phytochemical composition, displaying a range of opportunities for novel, sustainable, and tailored solutions to ruminant production systems in arid environments. Background: Medicinal plants are widely used across the globe as complementary and alternative therapies for managing various health conditions. The use of medicinal plants is a fundamental component of the African traditional healthcare system and most diverse therapeutic practices. Africa harbors a variety of plant species, many of which are estimated to be endemic, making it a rich source of medicinal plants with potential relevance to human health. Aim of the study: The study aimed to review and highlight the information in the literature related to the antimicrobial activity, wound-healing activity, and melanogenesis inhibition of African medicinal plants. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines, a literature search was conducted on ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Medline Ebscohost, and PubMed, which were searched for articles published between 2018 and 2024. Due to high heterogeneity and variability in study designs, data were synthesized using a narrative approach. Result: A total of 37 studies were included. Emilia coccinea, Entada africana, Trichilia dregeana, Physalis angulata, and Prunus africana demonstrated strong wound-healing activity (100%) at concentrations between 5 and 10%. For melanogenesis inhibition, Ormocarpum trichocarpum (IC50 = 2.95 µg/mL), Limonium cercinense (IC50 = 3 µg/mL), and L. boitardii (IC50 = 5 µg/mL) showed the most potent effects. The strongest antimicrobial effects were reported for Harpagophytum procumbens (MIC = 10 µg/mL) against Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis and Pistacia atlantica (MIC = 78.1 µg/mL) against Listeria monocytogenes and Candida albicans (MIC = 39 µg/mL). Conclusions: This study highlights the broad therapeutic potential of African medicinal plant extracts in addressing various health conditions, including skin infections, wound management, and skin pigmentation. While several extracts demonstrated strong bioactivity, inconsistent reporting of statistical data limited quantitative synthesis. Future studies should adopt standardized methodologies and report complete statistical outcomes to enable robust meta-analyses and support clinical translation. Full article

The transformation of degraded stands represents an essential strategy for enhancing stand productivity and optimizing site adaptability. This study examined four typical monoculture forest stands transformed from underperforming Platycladus orientalis (PO) forests in the limestone area of Xuzhou, China: Acer pictum subsp. mono (AP), Pistacia chinensis (PC), Ligustrum lucidum (LL), and Firmiana simplex (FS). The contents of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), along with the C:N:P stoichiometric ratios, were analyzed in plants (leaves and fine roots), litter, and soil. The relationships among these components and their main influencing factors were explored. The results indicated that FS leaves contained higher levels of N and P, whereas LL litter presented significantly elevated C:N and N:P ratios in comparison with those of the other forest stands (p < 0.05). With the exception of FS, leaves displayed lower P than fine roots, which presented pronounced P enrichment. The soil C, N, and P contents decreased with depth, with both the forest stand and depth significantly impacting the soil stoichiometry (p < 0.01). Redundancy analysis identified available potassium, total nitrogen, and microbial biomass carbon in the soil as key factors influencing the stoichiometric characteristics of the leaf–fine root–litter continuum. Collectively, the leaf N:P ratios (>16) and low soil P contents indicate that plantation growth was primarily constrained by P limitation. In response, AP, PC, and LL allocate more P to fine roots to adapt to the environment. Full article

The genus Pistacia from the Anacardiaceae family contains species of wild flowering plants. The only species that produces edible nuts large enough for commercial sale is P. vera L. (pistachio). Other species, such as P. terebinthus L., P. atlantica L., and P. khinjuk, are used as pistachio rootstocks. Pistacia species include phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, essential oils, and tannins, which are responsible for a number of pharmacological properties. The species most commonly investigated for their anticancer and/or cytotoxic activities against cancer cells in experimental studies include P. lentiscus, P. atlantica subspecies, and P. chinensis subsp. integerrima. However, no review exists that evaluates the phenolic compounds of three other Pistacia species (P. vera L., P. terebinthus L., and P. khinjuk) and their anticancer and cytotoxic effects. Thus, this review aims to thoroughly assess the phenolic compounds that were isolated from these species and investigate any potential anticancer or cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. The findings show that pistacia species and their isolated phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, and essential oils) from different plant parts have anticancer activity against lung, cervical, prostate, gastric, colon, liver, renal, skin, and breast cancer cells. Additionally, certain phenolic compounds from pistacia species have cytotoxic activity; however, the degree of toxicity may vary based on the dosage and duration of use. Further experiments are required to fully understand the possible mechanisms underlying the anticancer and cytotoxic effects of pistacia species and their phenolic compounds on cancer cells. Mastic gum, a plant-based resin from mastic trees, has become very popular in recent years and has been used in various food products due to its strong and positive aroma properties. In the present study, key odorant compounds of the mastic gum (MG) samples obtained from mastic gum trees (Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia) from two different countries, Türkiye (MGT) and Greece (MGG), were investigated and compared. The aroma-active compounds (AACs) were determined by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) and by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O). The two mastic gum samples exhibited similar aroma profiles but significant differences were observed in their concentrations. Among the aroma groups identified in both samples, monoterpenes were the most abundant group with α-pinene as the main compound followed by β-myrcene and β-pinene. On the other hand, the most dominant AAC in both samples was determined to be α-pinene (resinous, forest-like odor), followed by β-pinene (resinous, terpene-like odor), β-myrcene (pine-like, greenish odor), and linalool (floral, fruity odor), all of which had high flavor dilution (FD) values. The findings of the AEDA and sensory analysis revealed that the MGT sample contained more floral and fruity odors while the MGG sample had more resinous and pine-woody odors. Full article

In Argentina and globally, pistachio (Pistacia vera) production has significantly grown, driven by its high nutritional value and food industry demand. Its harvesting and processing generate about 40% of pistachio waste (PW), including leaves, twigs, seed coats, green, and empty kernels. Underutilized PW has led to environmental problems, including soil and water contamination by landfill accumulation. However, it could be a potential source of undiscovered bioactive compounds. This study aimed to characterize the chemical profile and to evaluate the bioactive properties of PW. The dried pistachio waste (dPW) was used to prepare the pistachio waste decoction (PWD) (10% w/v). The total phenolic content (TPC) and flavonoid content (FC) were quantified, and the chemical profile was analyzed using UPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. Nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne incognita (J2), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) inhibition, antioxidant capacity (ABTS, DPPH, FRAP), and phytotoxicity on Allium cepa, Lactuca sativa, and Raphanus sativus were evaluated. The UPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS analysis identified 26 compounds, including phenolics, flavonoids, and unsaturated fatty acids. The main compounds were gallic acid, anacardic acid, and quercetin derivatives. The TPC and FC were 212.65 mg GAE/g dPW and 0.022 mg QE/g dPW, respectively, displaying strong antioxidant activity across the assays DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP. PWD exhibited nematicidal activity against M. incognita (J2) (LC50 = 0.12% at 24 h). Alterations in the cuticle were observed, including structural disorganization and detachment from internal tissues. Additionally, a remarkable cholinesterase inhibitory effect was detected at 2.0% PWD (42.65% for AChE and 58.90% for BuChE). PWD showed low phytotoxic effects across the tested species, and the germination percentage (GP) and the mean germination time (MGT) were not significantly affected (GP > 79%). These findings highlight the potential of PW as a sustainable alternative for M. incognita control, the remarkable nematicidal, anticholinesterase, and antioxidant properties, and the low phytotoxicity, supporting its use in sustainable agricultural practices. Forests and scrubland comprise a large proportion of terrestrial ecosystems and, due to the long lifespan of trees and shrubs, their capacity to grow and store carbon as lasting woody tissues is particularly sensitive to warming-enhanced drought occurrence. Climate change may trigger a transition from forests to scrubland in many drylands during the coming decades due to the higher resilience of shrubs. However, we lack standardized frameworks to compare the response to drought of woody plants. We present a framework and develop an index to estimate the drought-induced vulnerability (DrVi) of trees and shrubs based on the radial growth trajectory and the response of growth variability to a drought index. We used tree-ring width series of three tree (Pinus halepensis Mill., Juniperus thurifera L., and Acer monspessulanum L.) and three shrub (Juniperus oxycedrus L., Pistacia lentiscus L., and Ephedra nebrodensis Tineo ex Guss.) species from semi-arid areas to test this framework. We compared the DrVi values between species and populations and explored their temporal changes. Across species, the strongest DrVi values were found in declining P. halepensis stands and J. oxycedrus from the same site, while the lowest DrVi values were found in A. monspessulanum, P. lentiscus, and E. nebrodensis. Across populations, J. oxycedrus presented higher vulnerability in one of the dry sites. The P. halepensis declining stand showed a steady increase in DrVi value after the 1980s as the climate shifted toward warmer and drier conditions. We conclude that the DrVi allows comparing species and populations using a standardized general framework. Full article

Pistacia terebinthus L., commonly known as the turpentine tree, is a wild-growing species with a well-documented history of use in traditional medicine and ethnobotany. Various parts of the plant—fruits, seeds, resin, leaves, and galls—have demonstrated significant bioactive potential, particularly antioxidant, antimicrobial, and functional properties. Despite these promising attributes, the industrial application of P. terebinthus L. in contemporary food and nutraceutical systems remains limited and underexplored. Recent advances have employed a range of technological strategies—including encapsulation, active food packaging, emulsion stabilization, probiotic immobilization, and fermentation—to improve the stability, bioavailability, and functional performance of P. terebinthus L.-derived extracts within food matrices. These approaches have shown potential in enhancing aroma retention, extending shelf life, and supporting probiotic viability, thereby positioning P. terebinthus L. as a promising candidate for use in functional formulations and natural food preservation. Nevertheless, further investigation is required to optimize processing parameters, assess the long-term stability of bioactive compounds, and establish standardized regulatory frameworks. Addressing these challenges will be essential for facilitating the broader integration of P. terebinthus L. into the functional food, nutraceutical, and food preservation industries. Full article
