The sustained growth of air traffic over the past decades has increased the aviation’s contribution to anthropogenic radiative forcing through both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. Although the industry has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, this goal appears unrealistic without curbing, or at least stopping, the continued rise in traffic. To assess the potential of alternative travel options and quantify their environmental benefits, simple and flexible emission models are needed. In this work, we present a set of analytical models for estimating fuel consumption and associated emissions, including CO2, SOx, water vapour, and other key non-CO2 emissions such as NOx and carbon monoxide. We also examine the emissions of non-volatile particulate matter. These models require only flight distance and aircraft seat numbers, enabling broad applicability across traffic scenarios. The models are openly available via a GitHub repository, and their practical use is demonstrated through a case study of a representative day of Spanish air traffic. Full article

This article analyses the role of the Spanish university system in promoting fair Trade (FT) and the sustainable development goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on the Universities for Fair Trade (UxFT) programme. A mixed methodology combining qualitative and quantitative approaches was used to review and analyse the websites of 90 Spanish universities (both public and private) to assess their commitment to FT and the SDGs. This was based on four variables: (1) reference to the SDGs; (2) a structured programme to promote the SDGs; (3) specific actions to promote or raise awareness of the SDGs; and (4) working on FT. The results show that, while most universities include the SDGs in their institutional strategies, only some have structured programmes. Regarding FT, several universities carry out activities linked to this movement, with some actively participating in the UxFT. Public universities demonstrate greater commitment. The SDGs that are most frequently addressed are 12 (Responsible consumption and production), 4 (Quality education) and 13 (Climate action), highlighting the close relationship between FT and sustainability. The study reveals a gap between discursive commitments to sustainability and the actual implementation of FT practices, suggesting that the integration of FT is not automatic even when SDG strategies are present. This has important implications: promoting FT within universities requires not only structured SDG strategies, but also explicit institutional policies, dedicated resources, and greater awareness of FT transformative potential. The findings underscore the need for stronger institutional commitment to move beyond isolated actions and toward a university model grounded in social justice and sustainability. Integrating the UxFT programme more broadly could help foster critical thinking, participatory governance, and more coherent practices aligned with the 2030 Agenda. Full article

The dynamics of the HIV reservoir during antiretroviral therapy (ART) exhibit variability, with a pronounced decline during the initial years of treatment. However, the identification of biomarkers and host factors associated with the decay of the different forms of HIV proviruses remains to be fully elucidated. We conducted a longitudinal study on people with HIV provided by the Spanish National HIV cohort. We assessed the HIV-DNA levels by Intact Proviral DNA Assay, and inflammatory markers using the Proximity Extension Assay, before and after ART initiation. A multivariate linear regression model was employed to identify potential predictive markers. Our results highlight the identification of novel inflammatory markers, such as ADA, DNER, CDCP1, SCF, among others, that varied significantly over ART initiation. In addition, we observed several markers associated with intact HIV-DNA before ART initiation (CD8A, CX3CL1, and ST1A1) or during undetectable viral load post-ART (IL-10). Moreover, up to five markers were able to predict the intact HIV reservoir decay over ART. The strongest predictor was Stem Cell Factor (SCF), where higher baseline levels of this marker were associated with a greater decline in the intact HIV reservoir. In conclusion, we have identified inflammatory markers associated with the size and dynamics of the HIV-DNA reservoir. These findings provide new insights that could contribute to the development of multi-targeted intervention strategies aimed at modulating or monitoring the HIV reservoir size. Full article

This systematic review examines the methodologies and applications of integrated risk indicators in positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceutical production, focusing on occupational, technological, and environmental risks. Conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines and utilizing the Ryyan software 2023 for article screening, the review synthesizes findings from 70 studies published between 2020 and 2025 in English and Spanish, including articles, conference papers, and reviews. The review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD420251078221). Key disciplines contributing to risk assessment frameworks include environmental science, occupational health and safety, civil engineering, mining engineering, maritime safety, financial/economic risk, and systems engineering. Predominant risk assessment methods identified are probabilistic modeling (e.g., Monte Carlo simulations), machine learning (e.g., neural networks), multi-criteria decision-making (e.g., AHP and TOPSIS), and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), each offering strengths, such as uncertainty quantification and systematic hazard identification, alongside limitations like data dependency and subjectivity. The review explores how frameworks from other industries can be adapted to address PET-specific risks, such as radiation exposure to workers, equipment failure, and waste management, and how studies integrate these factors into unified risk indicators using weighted scoring, probabilistic methods, and fuzzy logic. Gaps in the literature include limited stakeholder engagement, lack of standardized frameworks, insufficient real-time monitoring, and under-represented environmental risks. Future research directions propose developing PET-specific tools, integrating AI and IoT for real-time data, establishing standardized frameworks, and expanding environmental assessments to enhance risk management in PET radiopharmaceutical production. This review highlights the interdisciplinary nature of risk assessment and the critical need for comprehensive, tailored approaches to ensure safety and sustainability in this field. Full article

This study investigates how Spanish heritage language (SHL) learners, and second language (L2) learners cognitively and socially engage with texts through collaborative digital annotations. Conducted in two advanced online writing courses with forty students, the study employed Perusall, a social annotation platform, to examine reading behaviors and peer interactions. Quantitative analysis revealed both similarities and differences in strategy use: while both groups demonstrated equal levels of interaction, SHL learners favored Evaluating and Connecting strategies, suggesting reflective, experience-based engagement, whereas L2 learners more frequently used Questioning and Translating strategies, indicating a more analytical approach. Survey responses further highlighted perceived gains in vocabulary, motivation, grammar, and academic language awareness. These findings challenge deficit-based assumptions about SHL literacy and underscore the value of integrating culturally relevant, digitally mediated tasks in language instruction. The study affirms that collaborative annotation not only fosters cognitive engagement but also promotes social presence and academic identity development. It offers practical recommendations for grouping, scaffolding, and platform use, and contributes to a broader understanding of how digital tools can support inclusive, meaningful reading experiences for diverse learners in the twenty-first-century classroom. With the growing demand for natural and intelligent human–machine interaction in multilingual environments, automatic language identification (LID) has emerged as a crucial component in voice-enabled systems, particularly in the automotive domain. This study proposes an audio-based LID model that identifies the spoken language directly from voice input without requiring manual language selection. The model architecture leverages two types of feature extraction pipelines: a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) and a pre-trained Wav2Vec model, both used to obtain latent speech representations. These embeddings are then fed into a multi-layer perceptron (MLP)-based classifier to determine the speaker’s language among five target languages: Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, and French. The model is trained and evaluated using a dataset preprocessed into Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and raw waveform inputs. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving accurate and real-time language detection, with potential applications in in-vehicle systems, speech translation platforms, and multilingual voice assistants. By eliminating the need for predefined language settings, this work contributes to more seamless and user-friendly multilingual voice interaction systems. Full article

Background: Hospitalized patients’ expectations about their treatment play a key role in therapeutic adherence, satisfaction with care, and clinical outcomes. However, there is a lack of brief, psychometrically validated instruments in Spanish-speaking contexts that adequately assess this construct. Objective: The objective of this study is to culturally adapt and validate the Hospitalized Patients’ Expectations for Treatment Scale-Patient Version (HOPE-P) in a Peruvian population. Methods: A methodological, cross-sectional study was conducted with 277 hospitalized patients aged 18 to 85 years (M = 45.87; SD = 17.09). The adaptation process included translation, back-translation, expert review, and pilot testing. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to assess the factor structure, and reliability and validity indices were calculated. Results: The bifactorial model showed good fit (CFI = 0.97, TLI = 0.94, RMSEA = 0.06). One item with a low factor loading was removed to improve the model. Convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed through acceptable values of Average Variance Extracted (0.60 and 0.55) and inter-factor correlation (φ2 = 0.23). Internal consistency was strong for both dimensions (α = 0.76–0.77; ω = 0.76–0.77). Conclusions: The Spanish version of the HOPE-P is a valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate instrument for evaluating treatment expectations in hospitalized Peruvian patients. Its implementation in clinical settings could enhance physician–patient communication, support shared decision-making, and contribute to better therapeutic outcomes, especially in high-demand healthcare environments. This feature paper explores the comparative pedagogical roles of concrete and virtual manipulatives in preservice mathematics teacher education. Based on a design-based research (DBR) methodology, this study investigates the effects of tangible tools (e.g., base-ten blocks, fraction circles) and digital applications (e.g., GeoGebra Classic 6, Polypad) on preservice teachers’ problem solving, conceptual understanding, engagement, and instructional reasoning. Data were collected through surveys (n = 53), semi-structured interviews (n = 25), and classroom observations (n = 30) in a Spanish university’s teacher education program. Key findings show that both forms of manipulatives significantly enhance engagement and conceptual clarity, but are affected by logistical and digital access barriers. This paper further proposes a theoretically grounded model for simulating manipulatives through ICT-based environments, enabling scalable and adaptive mathematics teacher training. By linking constructivist learning theory, the Technologically Enhanced Learning Environment (TELE) framework, and simulation-based pedagogy, this model aims to replicate the cognitive, affective, and collaborative affordances of manipulatives in virtual contexts. Distinct from prior work, this study contributes an integrated theoretical and practical framework, contextualized through empirical classroom data, and presents a clear plan for real-world ICT-based implementation. The findings provide actionable insights for teacher educators, edtech developers, and policymakers seeking to expand equitable and engaging mathematics education through simulation and blended modalities. Urban tree planting on single-family-home lots represents a critical yet underexplored component of municipal greening strategies. This study examines residents’ perceptions of tree planting in Westpointe, a diverse neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah, as part of the city’s Reimagine Nature Public Lands Master Plan development effort. Through a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews (n = 24) and a tree signup initiative extended to 86 residents, with 51 participating, this research explores the complex interplay of demographic, economic, social, and infrastructure factors influencing residents’ willingness to plant trees on single-family-home lots. The findings reveal significant variations based on gender, with women expressing more positive environmental and aesthetic motivations, while men focused on practical concerns including maintenance and property damage. Age emerged as another critical factor, with older adults (65+) expressing concerns about long-term maintenance capabilities, while younger families (25–44) demonstrated future-oriented thinking about shade and property values. Property characteristics, particularly yard size, significantly influenced receptiveness, with owners of larger yards (>5000 sq ft) showing greater willingness compared to those with smaller properties, who cited space constraints. Additional barriers, i.e., maintenance, financial, and knowledge barriers, included irrigation costs, lack of horticultural knowledge, pest concerns, and proximity to underground utilities. Geographic analysis revealed that Spanish-speaking social networks were particularly effective in promoting tree planting. The study contributes to urban forestry literature by providing nuanced insights into single-family homeowners’ tree-planting decisions and offers targeted recommendations for municipal programs. These include gender-specific outreach strategies, age-appropriate support services, sliding-scale subsidy programs based on property size, and comprehensive education initiatives. The findings inform evidence-based approaches to increase urban canopy coverage through private property plantings, ultimately supporting climate resilience and environmental justice goals in diverse urban neighborhoods. The growing complexity of financial markets, driven by globalization and digitalization, has increased the need for individuals to make informed financial decisions. In this context, financial education and personal finance have become crucial areas of study. This systematic review aimed to identify and analyze the existing scientific evidence on these topics, determine the countries contributing to the literature, and extract key conclusions and lessons. A comprehensive search was conducted across the Scopus, Scielo, and La Referencia databases using keywords in Spanish. The initial query yielded 97 documents, which were filtered using seven inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in a final sample of 19 relevant articles. The reviewed studies highlight that financial education is a key factor in promoting economic well-being, reducing over-indebtedness, supporting entrepreneurship, and enhancing social inclusion. The effectiveness of financial education depends on equitable access to information, the use of digital tools, tailored approaches for diverse populations, and systematic program evaluation. The findings suggest that collaborative efforts between governments, educational institutions, and the financial sector are necessary to develop inclusive and practical financial education strategies, particularly for vulnerable populations. Financial education must be approached as a continuous, adaptive process to effectively respond to evolving economic challenges. Full article

Background: Eating disorder (ED) symptoms and body image (BI) concerns involve serious risks to the physical and mental health of women and men. Social networking sites have amplified the promotion of idealised body images, contributing to this issue. Objectives: This study examines the link between personal and emotional factors, social media body image-related behaviours, BI concerns, and ED symptoms, as well as the differential role of these factors according to gender. Methods: A cross-sectional design was applied. The participants were 201 Spanish adults (mean age = 28.26; 76.6% women) who completed self-reported measures on BI (MBSRQ), ED symptoms (EAT-26), perfectionism (EDI-2), anxiety, depression, stress (DASS-21), emotional dysregulation (DERS), life satisfaction (SWLS), and social media BI-related behaviours. Results: Significant relationships between ED symptoms and BI concerns with personal and emotional factors and social media body image-related behaviours have been found. Women have scored higher in ED symptoms and social media BI-related behaviours than men. Multiple regression analyses showed that the difficulty in accepting emotions and not posting images due to BI dissatisfaction were risk factors for ED symptoms in both men and women. Furthermore, the adverse effect of perfectionism and low life satisfaction on women’s ED symptoms were demonstrated, whereas in men, goal-directed behaviours were associated with ED risk. Conclusions: These results suggest that prevention programmes focusing on emotional regulation and healthier social media use can be effective for ED symptoms and BI concerns. Full article

The present article analyzes the value that investors assign to financial products that contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11): “Sustainable Cities and Communities” by comparing investor preferences in Spain and Mexico through a choice experiment. Spain and Mexico were selected due to their contrasting levels of economic development, sustainability awareness, and regulatory maturity, offering a meaningful basis for a cross-country comparison. Preferences for investment funds that promote SDG 11 are examined by evaluating key attributes such as financial institution type, expected return, risk level, and explicit contribution to SDG 11. The results, estimated using a mixed logit model applied to a choice experiment with 568 respondents, evaluating attributes such as institution type, return, risk, and contribution to SDG 11, reveal strong risk aversion and a differentiated willingness to pay for sustainable attributes, particularly among Spanish investors. Relevant differences between the two countries emerge, suggesting the need for tailored strategies to foster sustainable investment, especially in Mexico, where sustainability is less valued in investment decisions. The policy implications include the need for investment approaches and communication strategies that are adapted to national contexts. This article concludes with recommendations for designing financial products that better align with the values and expectations of responsible investors, particularly regarding sustainable cities and communities. This article examines the significant contributions of Helga de Alvear as a gallerist, collector, and patron, a pivotal figure in the evolution of the Spanish and international contemporary art market. Her legacy is particularly notable through the establishment of the Helga de Alvear Museum in the city of Cáceres, intended to share her vast collection of over 3000 works and foster exhibition, research, conservation, and education. The study analyzes her art collection, highlighting its substantial international minimalist art component, contextualizing its development with her personal and professional journey. Furthermore, it explores the institutionalization of her legacy, from the Helga de Alvear Foundation to the creation and evolution of the museum, its innovative architecture and museography, and its impact on Cáceres’s urban landscape. Physical Fitness, Experiential Avoidance, and Psychological Inflexibility Among Adolescents: Results from the EHDLA Study

Background/Introduction: Psychological inflexibility, which includes experiential avoidance, is a transdiagnostic process associated with multiple mental health issues in adolescence. Physical fitness (PF) has shown benefits for mental well-being, yet its specific relationship with psychological inflexibility remains understudied, particularly among youth. Objectives: To examine the association between components of PF and psychological inflexibility, measured by the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), in a representative sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 631 adolescents (aged 12–17) participating in the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study. PF was assessed by the Assessing the Levels of PHysical Activity and Fitness (ALPHA-Fit) Test Battery (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, agility, and flexibility). Psychological inflexibility was measured using the AAQ-II. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to evaluate associations, adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, socioeconomic status, physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep duration, and energy intake. Results: Unadjusted analyses showed weak but significant associations between psychological inflexibility and performance in the 20 m shuttle run test (p = 0.002), the 4 × 10 shuttle run test (p = 0.005), and the sit-and-reach test (p < 0.001). However, after adjusting for covariates, none of the PF components maintained a statistically significant association with the AAQ-II scores. Conclusions: In this adolescent sample, PF components were not independently associated with psychological inflexibility after adjustment for key confounders. These findings suggest that, while PF may contribute to general well-being, it is not a primary determinant of psychological inflexibility. Further longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms linking physical and psychological health in youth. Full article

Since 2014, the Paleoanthropology Group of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC), in collaboration with Equatoguinean researchers, has been conducting archeo-paleontological fieldwork in Equatorial Guinea, continuing a longstanding Spanish naturalist tradition in this region of West Central Africa. These multidisciplinary investigations, framed within an archeo-paleo-anthropological approach, aim primarily to identify early human occupation in the Central African rainforests. To date, robust evidence of Pleistocene human presence has been documented, particularly through lithic assemblages. Although the scarcity and fragmentation of well-dated sites in Central Africa complicate chronological placement, technological traits observed in the lithic industries recorded in Equatorial Guinea show clear affinities with the African Middle Stone Age (MSA). Complementary taphonomic analyses of faunal remains have been undertaken to better understand bone preservation and fossilization processes under tropical rainforest conditions, thereby contributing to the interpretation of archeological contexts. In parallel, ongoing primatological research within the project—focused on extant primates in their natural habitats—seeks to provide ethological models relevant to the study of hominin locomotor evolution. Notably, the project has led to the ecogeographic characterization of the Engong chimpanzee group in Monte Alén National Park, one of the country’s most pristine protected areas. Full article
