In China, the substantial gap between domestic soybean supply and growing consumption necessitates large-scale soybean imports. The use of cultivated soybean (Glycine max) leaves as feed for the edible insect Clanis bilineata tsingtauica reduces crop yield, posing a threat to national soybean production security. To address this issue, this study evaluated wild soybean (Glycine soja) as a potential alternative feed source. Comparative analyses examined the nutritional and anti-nutritional properties of G. max (cv. Qihuang34) and a laboratory-preserved G. soja germplasm, together with their effects on larval growth performance, nutritional composition, and associated microbiota. G. soja leaves exhibited significantly higher crude fat (5.61% vs. 2.17%), ash (11.07% vs. 9.62%), neutral detergent fiber (23.75% vs. 21.00%), calcium (4.05 g/kg vs. 3.41 g/kg), and phosphorus (2.52 g/kg vs. 2.38 g/kg) than G. max leaves, along with lower trypsin inhibitor levels (p < 0.01) despite higher phytic acid content (p < 0.05). Fifth-instar larvae reared on G. soja leaves showed a 12.9% greater body weight (6.846 g vs. 6.066 g), higher crude protein (672.14 g/kg vs. 555.02 g/kg), total soluble sugar (21.27 mg/g vs. 8.96 mg/g), and soluble protein (26.35 mg/g vs. 24.71 mg/g), but lower crude fat (187.44 g/kg vs. 205.82 g/kg, p < 0.05). 16S rRNA sequencing revealed distinct phyllosphere microbial communities, with G. soja enriched in diverse taxa (e.g., Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria) and G. max dominated by Firmicutes. Corresponding differences were observed in larval gut microbiota, and positive correlations suggested potential microbial transfer from G. soja leaves to larval guts. Overall, G. soja represents a promising alternative feed source for C. bilineata, reducing competition with soybean grain production and supporting sustainable insect farming. Full article

Introduction: Smoking cigarettes is widely recognized as a significant risk factor for tooth loss. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the association between cigarette smoking, smoking cessation, and the number of remaining teeth in an adult population. Methods: Data from the Bialystok Plus population study, collected between November 2018 and January 2024, were analyzed. Participants were stratified into young (20–44 years), middle-aged (45–64 years), and older (65 years and above) groups. The outcome was the number of lost teeth. Smoking status (non-smoker vs. ever smoker and former smoker vs. current smoker) and smoking duration were the main independent variables. Additional variables included age, sex, dental habits and medical history. Risk factor analysis was done with generalized linear models using the negative binomial family. Results: Ever smoking was significantly associated with tooth count. Differences in the number of remaining teeth between former and current smokers were observed across age groups but not in the overall population. Current smokers exhibited a significantly greater decline in the number of teeth with an increasing fraction of life spent smoking compared to former smokers. Negative binomial regression models showed that ever smoking, when adjusted for age and diabetes, was a risk factor of tooth loss, but a protective effect of smoking cessation was not confirmed. Conclusions: This study confirmed that tobacco addiction is associated with tooth loss. Being a current smoker remained non-significant as a risk factor for tooth loss when compared to former smoker status. Full article

Background/Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a significant and prevalent cardiovascular complication in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, yet its specific predictors within this population are not well understood. This study aimed to identify the predictors of new-onset AF in ESRD patients undergoing dialysis. Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study within the Northwell Health System, analyzing data from 5326 ESRD patients on dialysis between 2017 and 2019. The mean age was 64.2 ± 13.1 years, with 48.3% females. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was used to identify predictors of new-onset AF, the primary outcome. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for potential risk factors. Results: Of the 5326 patients, 1564 (29.4%) developed new-onset AF. Significant predictors included increasing age (OR 1.038 per year, 95% CI 1.032–1.044, p < 0.0001), obesity (BMI > 30 vs. BMI 20–25: OR 1.208, 95% CI 1.026–1.422, p = 0.023), and coronary artery disease (OR 1.678, 95% CI 1.466–1.920, p < 0.0001). African American patients had lower odds of developing AF compared to White patients (OR 0.578, 95% CI 0.494–0.676, p < 0.0001). Hypertension, sex, diabetes, and tobacco use were not significantly associated with AF risk. Conclusions: Age, obesity, and coronary artery disease are significant predictors of new-onset AF in ESRD patients on dialysis. Notable racial disparities exist, with African American patients having a lower risk. These findings may inform targeted prevention strategies and guide future research into the mechanisms underlying AF in ESRD patients. Full article

Background/Objectives: Laryngeal cancer remains a global health burden, particularly in regions with high tobacco and alcohol consumption. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive epidemiological overview of laryngeal cancer in Western Greece and to assess overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and key prognostic factors over a 21-year period. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including patients diagnosed and treated for laryngeal cancer at the Otorhinolaryngology Department of the University General Hospital of Patras between 1997 and 2017. Demographic, clinical, histopathological, and treatment data were collected. Survival outcomes were estimated using Kaplan–Meier analysis and compared using the log-rank test. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to identify independent prognostic factors. Significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: A total of 211 patients were included (mean age 62.7 years; 95.3% male). Active smoking was reported in 97.6% of cases. Most patients (88.6%) were diagnosed at advanced stages (III–IV), with glottic tumors being the most common (61.1%). The 5-year OS and DSS rates were 47.0% and 55.6%, respectively. Larger tumor size, nodal involvement, and advanced stage were significantly associated with reduced DSS in univariable analysis (p < 0.001). Cox regression confirmed tumor size (HR = 1.665, 95% CI: 1.187–2.336) and nodal status (HR = 1.546, 95% CI: 1.176–2.031) as independent predictors of DSS. Conclusions: The findings highlight the impact of advanced disease at diagnosis and the central prognostic role of tumor burden in laryngeal cancer in Western Greece. Early detection and timely management remain essential to improve patient outcomes. Full article

Cunninghamia lanceolata (C. lanceolata), a pivotal economic timber species in southern China, faces increasing threats from global warming and heat stress. Due to limited knowledge regarding its stress response mechanisms, uncovering the molecular basis of heat tolerance is crucial for breeding resilient varieties. Therefore, the objective of this study was to elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms of C. lanceolata in response to heat stress. In this study, we performed a time-series transcriptomic analysis on leaves of C. lanceolata ‘6421’ seedlings exposed to heat stress (39 °C) for 0, 1, 4, 8, 12, and 16 h. A total of 1130 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, with functions primarily enriched in signal transduction, protein folding, and the MAPK and NF-kappa B signaling pathways. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed a complex regulatory network, identifying ClHsf8 as a central hub transcription factor. To validate its function, ClHsf8 was cloned and overexpressed in tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana). Under heat stress conditions, transgenic plants exhibited enhanced thermotolerance compared to wild-type controls, characterized by significantly higher activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, and CAT) and reduced accumulation of MDA and H2O2. Our findings elucidate the molecular regulatory mechanisms of C. lanceolata in response to high temperatures and demonstrate the functional role of ClHsf8 in conferring heat tolerance, providing a theoretical foundation for the genetic improvement of heat-resilient cultivars. Recent findings in nutritional epidemiology report an association between high dietary phosphorus intake and increased cancer risk. Building on the author’s analysis of breast cancer incidence in the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN), this paper presents a theoretical–conceptual model and a hypothesis to guide further population-study replication. To strengthen the initial SWAN analysis signal, a sensitivity analysis increased the number of controls in the nested case–control design from four to five per case. This adjustment modestly raised the relative risk (RR) of breast cancer incidence among middle-aged women consuming >1800 mg/day of dietary phosphorus (compared with 800–1000 mg/day) from RR: 2.30 to 2.38 (95% CI: 0.95–5.95; p = 0.06), improving statistical precision from the original p = 0.07. However, the result remains an exploratory pilot signal, not a confirmed association. Because clinical trials cannot ethically expose participants to potential harm from phosphate toxicity, a confirmed association relies on observational research. As in historical tobacco–cancer investigations, secondary analyses are needed across large cohort studies to examine dietary phosphorus intake and incidence of major cancer types. Relevant cohorts include the Nurses’ Health Study, Women’s Health Initiative, Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) Epidemiologic Follow-Up Study, European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), and the Canadian Study of Diet, Lifestyle and Health. Effect estimates can be synthesized using meta-analytic methods following PRISMA-P 2015 guidelines. Dietary phosphate modification may offer a cancer prevention strategy with substantial public health impact and clinical implications. Full article

Background and Objectives: Rates of obesity have been consistently increasing in recent years across all age groups, with a notable rise among young people. Obesity represents a persistent inflammatory condition and a key contributor to various chronic health problems, such as cardiovascular disorders, metabolic abnormalities, cancer, and psychological conditions. The move from high school to university is a transitional phase accompanied by specific pressures that can affect both body weight control and mental health in students. This cross-sectional investigation aimed to investigate potential associations between excess weight and the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in university populations. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis included 5298 students enrolled at universities across ten geographic areas of Greece. Participants filled out questionnaires concerning demographic information and lifestyle behaviors. Levels of depression and anxiety were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the short form of the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-6), respectively. Measurements of height and body weight were obtained to compute Body Mass Index (BMI). Results: The presence of overweight or obesity among students was significantly and independently related to female sex, urban residence, living independently, tobacco use, and lower academic performance (p = 0.0103, p = 0.0102, p = 0.0203, p = 0.0075, and p = 0.0168, respectively). Individuals reporting insufficient physical activity had 85% higher odds of being overweight or obese (p = 0.0068). Similarly, participants experiencing depressive or anxious symptomatology had more than double odds of excess body weight compared with those without such symptoms (p = 0.0015 and p = 0.0012, respectively). Furthermore, poor Mediterranean diet adherence was linked to more than a twofold increase in the odds of overweight or obesity (p = 0.0005). Conclusions: These findings offer considerable evidence that symptoms of depression and anxiety may serve as significant contributors to the development of overweight and obesity among university students. Additional longitudinal studies are strongly encouraged to substantiate these observations. Full article

Microplastic pollution in farmland soils has emerged as a global concern due to its potential to degrade soil health, inhibit crop growth, and enter the food chain. However, effective and environmentally friendly remediation strategies remain limited, particularly regarding the use of biochar to mitigate polyethylene microplastic (PE-MP) stress in agroecosystems. This study investigates whether tobacco stalk biochar (TSB) can alleviate PE-MPs stress in rice seedlings. A two-factor pot experiment was conducted to systematically analyze the responses of soil physicochemical properties, rice growth indicators, and antioxidant enzyme activities to the combined application of varying concentrations of PE-MPs (0, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% (w/w)) and TSB (0, 3%, 6%, and 9% (w/w)). The results show that TSB significantly increased soil pH and organic matter content, effectively mitigating the decline in available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium caused by PE-MPs (e.g., under the M3B3 treatment, available nitrogen and phosphorus contents increased by 68.7% and 226%, respectively, compared with those under the M3B0 treatment). Under low-concentration PE-MP (0.5%) stress, an appropriate amount of TSB (3%) resulted in the highest rice germination rate, vigor index, and stress tolerance index, while significantly inducing the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) to alleviate oxidative damage. However, high-concentration combinations of TSB and PE-MPs exhibited an antagonistic effect. In conclusion, tobacco stalk biochar can synergistically mitigate microplastic stress on rice through multiple pathways, with its remediation effects exhibiting significant dose dependence and interactive complexity. These findings provide a theoretical and technical basis for the ecological remediation of microplastic pollution in farmland. Full article

Background: Chlorophyll degradation is a characteristic sign of fruit ripening. However, the chlorophyll degradation pathway during pitaya fruit development remains unexplored. Methods and Results: Here, chlorophyll contents showed a downward trend across the five developmental stages of ‘Jindu No.1’ pitaya peels. Based on the pitaya genome data, twenty chlorophyll degradation genes were identified, including two NYCs, three CLHs, five SGRs, six PAOs, and four RCCRs, spread across eight pitaya chromosomes. In addition, their phylogenetic relationships, conserved motifs, and domains were analyzed using homologous genes from beet and Arabidopsis species. Transcriptomic data and RT-qPCR analyses of these genes suggested that three HuSGRs demonstrated a significant upward trend during pitaya peel maturation. Indeed, the HuSGR1 has the complete gene structure, including the chloroplast transit peptide, SGR domain, and variable C-terminal region. However, HuSGR2 and HuSGR3 contained the N- and C-terminal sequences, respectively, of HuSGR1. They were separated by a 690 bp distance on chromosome 8, forming a gene cluster. Overexpressed HuSGR2 or HuSGR3 alone resulted in a significant decrease in chlorophyll contents in tobacco leaves. Notably, a more obvious reduction of chlorophyll contents was observed when overexpressing them together. Conclusions: Our results show that HuSGR2 and HuSGR3 were involved in accelerating the chlorophyll degradation process, providing new insights into the molecular basis of color formation in pitaya peels. Background/Objectives: Despite demonstrated mortality benefits, annual low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening faces challenges in real-world adoption due to low uptake and poor longitudinal adherence. This review evaluates patient- and provider-level factors that influence screening participation and highlights strategies to strengthen equitable engagement throughout the screening pathway. Methods: A structured literature search of PubMed and Web of Science was performed to identify studies published between 2013 and November 2025 (search conducted on 25 November 2025). Eligible publications included qualitative and quantitative studies, study protocols, and reviews examining LDCT screening uptake, adherence, and follow-up practices. Extracted evidence was synthesized, with particular attention being paid to patient- and provider-level determinants. Results: The evidence demonstrates that both patient- and provider-level factors substantially influence screening participation and continuity. At the patient level, limited awareness of screening, misconceptions regarding asymptomatic disease, and psychosocial factors such as fear, fatalism, stigma, and medical mistrust were consistently associated with reduced uptake and adherence. At the provider level, gaps in guideline familiarity, time constraints, and challenges in delivering high-quality shared decision-making limited referrals and follow-up. Conclusions: Improving real-world effectiveness of LDCT lung cancer screening requires reframing screening as a longitudinal program of care. Pectate lyase (PeL) is a key cell wall-degrading enzyme in the infection process of plant-parasitic nematodes, with a large gene family exhibiting functional redundancy. The dominant PeL isoform during the initial infection time course remains unclear. In this study, 21 Ddpel genes were identified in Ditylenchus destructor Thorne, 1945, 7 of which were differentially expressed during the initial infection time course of this nematode. The purified proteins of these seven DdPeLs showed pathogenicity toward both sweet potato and tobacco, and their optimal enzymatic pH varied significantly. Prior to host infection, D. destructor preferentially expresses Ddpel genes encoding pectate lyase with higher activity at pH 5.8. However, within 5 days post-inoculation with nematodes, the expression of genes encoding acidic DdPeL enzymes (enzymes with optimal activity in acidic pH) was upregulated, while genes encoding alkaline DdPeL enzymes (optimal activity in alkaline pH) were concurrently downregulated. Through site-directed mutagenesis, we demonstrated that the loss of enzymatic activity in DdPeLs abolished their ability to induce plant cell death. Furthermore, when acidic or alkaline DdPeLs were pre-treated with dialysis in their respective optimal pH buffers prior to infiltration, their pathogenicity was significantly enhanced. Together, these findings demonstrate that enzymatic activity, governed by protein structure and local pH, is a key determinant of pathogenicity. Previous studies have reported that phytopathogens can secrete organic acids during the initial infection phase, leading to localized acidification of the host microenvironment. We therefore hypothesize that, during the initial infection time course, nematodes may actively acidify the host microenvironment to specifically enhance the enzymatic activity of acidic DdPeLs, thereby promoting cell wall degradation and facilitating infection establishment. Cigarette smoke contains a high concentration of carcinogenic substances to which smokers are regularly exposed. Passive smoking is seriously harmful to the health of non-smoking humans and animals. Domestic cats are particularly vulnerable because of their constant grooming activity, which can promote oral ingestion of smoke-derived residues. Cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, is a reliable biomarker for tobacco exposure. Considering these observations, our study aimed to (1) characterize cytological alterations in oral mucosal epithelial cells by conventional morphology and automated digital cytomorphometry; (2) quantify urinary cotinine concentration and investigate its possible correlation with oral epithelial cytological alterations. To this aim, oral smears were collected from 30 cats divided into two groups (20 exposed; 10 non-exposed). Smears were stained with May–Grünwald–Giemsa and Papanicolaou to assess inflammation and dysplasia; digital cytomorphometric analysis was used to quantify the nucleus-to-cytoplasm (N/C) ratio. Urinary cotinine was measured by ELISA. Our results showed that exposed cats had significantly higher urinary cotinine levels and higher N/C ratios (p < 0.01) than non-exposed controls, along with mild-to-severe inflammation and dysplastic-like epithelial alterations. These findings support urinary cotinine as a valid biomarker of household tobacco smoke exposure in domestic cats and suggest that such exposure may be correlated with early cytological and cytomorphometric changes in the oral mucosa. Further studies are needed to better investigate the relationship between exposure duration and cytological, cytomorphometric, and molecular alterations. Full article

Background: Most individuals develop smoking habits in adolescence, highlighting the need for a smoking prevention program targeted at this age group. The use of “Implementation Intentions” (If-Then plans) about how to refuse a cigarette combined with anti-smoking messages has been shown to be effective in the UK. However, there is a scarcity of data regarding school-based smoking prevention interventions among adolescents available to countries with high tobacco consumption rates, like Greece. Objectives: To describe the cultural adaptation procedure and the evaluation protocol for the school-based “Implementation Intentions” program aimed at reducing tobacco use susceptibility among Greek adolescents aged 13–16 in school settings. Methods: The present study is part of the EU-funded FRESHAIR4Life Program. We will use a mixed-methods approach with a pre- and post-intervention design in six conveniently selected secondary schools in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, to measure the intervention’s Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance using the RE-AIM framework. The study plans to involve three Master Trainers (MTs), 20–25 school teachers (to be trained by the MTs), and approximately 480 students. Participating schools will receive the “Implementation Intentions” intervention, which is based on a goal-setting technique where individuals commit to perform a particular behavior when a specific context arises. The study will consist of five sequential phases: Phase I involves training three Master Trainers (MTs) using the International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG’s) Teach-the-Teacher (TtT) curriculum, specifically focused on the implementation of our intervention. In Phase II, workshops will be held to co-create and culturally adapt the intervention. Phase III will involve teachers trained by MTs on delivering the intervention. In Phase IV, teachers will deliver the intervention among students in their schools. Data will be collected pre- and post-intervention through surveys, session logs, fidelity observations, feedback forms, and follow-up interviews or focus groups (Phase V). Quantitative data will be analyzed descriptively and by using paired t-tests and multiple linear regression analyses, while qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis. Discussion: The study protocol’s potential benefits extend beyond educating Greek adolescents on the risks associated with smoking. Active participation will empower and motivate young people to make informed, healthy choices. We expect the results could help create more effective, context-specific interventions, support policy changes aimed at decreasing the prevalence of adolescent smoking in Crete, Greece, and potentially be used by other countries as well. Background/Objectives: Tobacco use is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide and is linked to major health and economic burden. Many smokers attempt to quit, yet long-term success rates with current medicines and counseling are still modest. Long-term nicotine exposure distorts brain systems involved in reward, craving, and self-control. These changes weaken inhibitory control and strengthen responses to smoking cues, which increases the risk of relapse. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that delivers magnetic pulses to specific cortical regions, most commonly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, to influence neural activity. This narrative review explored how transcranial magnetic stimulation may aid smoking cessation by acting on neural circuits linked to nicotine dependence. Methods: Five major databases were searched for studies published between 2015 and 2026. After removal of duplicates and screening, a total of 34 studies were included in this narrative synthesis. Randomized controlled trials, clinical studies, and neuroimaging investigations involving adults with nicotine dependence were included. A thematic narrative method was employed to synthesize findings due to the differences in study designs, protocols, and outcome measures. Results: TMS has been shown to attenuate cravings, decrease daily cigarette consumption, and decrease nicotine dependence in various studies. Several trials reported higher abstinence rates with active stimulation compared with sham treatment. Meta-analytic findings indicate stronger effects with 10 Hz stimulation and treatment courses of 20 sessions or more. Neuroimaging studies report changes in functional connectivity within reward, executive control, and salience networks, suggesting partial restoration of disrupted circuits. Treatment response varies according to age, educational level, baseline dependence, and stimulation parameters. Conclusions: These findings support transcranial magnetic stimulation as a promising brain-based approach for smoking cessation, while further well-designed trials with longer follow-up are still needed. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with TB infection (TBI) serving as the primary source of TB disease. While HIV infection has long been recognised as a major risk factor for TB progression, the rise of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), which may exert immunosuppressive effects, further compounded by their treatment, contributes to increased TB susceptibility. This scoping review synthesises evidence from systematic reviews on medical and behavioural risk factors for TBI progression to TB disease, for both asymptomatic and symptomatic disease. Methods: A preliminary literature search was conducted on 11 January 2025, in PUBMED using the keywords “tuberculosis,” “asymptomatic or subclinical tuberculosis” “risk factors,” and “systematic review” followed by targeted reviews on the identified medical and behavioural risk factors for TB infection progression to TB disease. Results: A total of 25 systematic reviews were included. Medical risk factors for progression from TB infection to TB disease included diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), undernutrition (including iron and vitamin D deficiency), cancer—particularly haematological malignancies—and immunosuppressive therapies (TNF-α inhibitors and glucocorticoids). Iron and vitamin D deficiency, particularly severe deficiency, is linked to increased TB risk, especially among people living with HIV. Behavioural risk factors, including tobacco, drug, and alcohol use, were also highlighted. Geographic variations in TB prevalence, diagnostic practices, and healthcare systems contributed to differences in risk estimates across reviews. No systematic reviews were identified that examined risk factors for asymptomatic TB. Conclusions: The convergence of TB with NCDs, compounded by immunosuppressive therapies, poses a public health challenge in high TB burden settings. Effective TB prevention requires targeted screening, along with enhanced management of these NCDs. Nutritional support, particularly screening and treatment of anaemia and vitamin D deficiency, may benefit individuals with TBI, comorbid NCDs, and HIV. A multidisciplinary approach, integrating behavioural interventions and tailored prevention strategies, is essential to achieving WHO’s End TB targets. Addressing the evidence gap on risk factors for asymptomatic TB is also critical to improve early detection and interrupt transmission. Full article
