This study investigates the mechanism and effects of incorporating different ZrO2 nano-particles into SAC0307 solder alloys. ZrO2 nano-powder and nano-fibers in 0.25–0.5 wt% were added to the SAC0307 alloy to prepare composite solder joints by surface mount technology. The solder joints were shear tested before and after a 4000 h long 85 °C/85% RH corrosive reliability test. The incorporation of ZrO2 nano-particles enhanced the initial shear force of the solder joint, but they decreased the corrosion resistance in the case of 0.5 wt%. SEM, EDS, and FIB analysis revealed intensive growth of SnO2 on the solder joint surfaces, leading to the formation of Sn whiskers. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations showed that, despite Sn being able to bond to the surface of ZrO2, the binding energy was weak, and the whole system was therefore unstable. It was also found that ZrO2 nano-particles refined the microstructure of the solder joints. Decreased β-Sn grain size and more dispersed intermetallic compounds were observed. The microstructural refinement caused mechanical improvement of the ZrO2 composite solder joints by dispersion strengthening but could also decrease their corrosion resistance. While ZrO2 nano-particles improved the solder joint mechanical properties, their use is recommended only in non-corrosive environments, such as microelectronics for space applications. Full article

A series of nanopillar compression tests were performed on tungsten as a function of temperature using in situ transmission electron microscopy with localized laser heating. Surface oxidation was observed to form on the pillars and grow in thickness with increasing temperature. Deformation between 850 °C and 1120 °C is facilitated by long-range diffusional transport from the tungsten pillar onto adjacent regions of the Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 indenter. The constraint imposed by the surface oxidation is hypothesized to underly this mechanism for localized plasticity, which is generally the so-called whisker growth mechanism. The results are discussed in context of the tungsten fuzz growth mechanism in He plasma-facing environments. The two processes exhibit similar morphological features and the conditions under which fuzz evolves appear to satisfy the conditions necessary to induce whisker growth. Full article

Aiming to provide key materials in order to improve the fracture toughness of ZrB2 ceramics, ZrB2-SiC composite powders with in situ grown SiC whiskers were successfully synthesized via a simple molten-salt-assisted ferrous-catalyzed carbothermal reduction method. Thermodynamic calculations on the ZrO2-SiO2-B2O3-C-Fe system were carried out. The effects of heating temperature and ferrous catalyst amount on the growth behavior of SiC whiskers in ZrB2-SiC composite powders were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the aspect ratio of SiC whiskers and the relative content of ZrB2 particles increased with increasing heating temperature (1523–1723 K) and a molar ratio of Fe to ZrSiO4 from 0:1 to 0.2:1. Phase-pure ZrB2-SiC composite powders were obtained at 1723 K when the molar ratio of raw materials was 0.2:0.5:1:1.5:8.4 (Fe:NaCl:ZrSiO4:B2O3:C). Single crystalline β-SiC whiskers with a mean diameter of 0.15 μm and an aspect ratio of 70–120 were homogeneously distributed in the final composite powders. A molten-salt-assisted iron-catalyzed vapor–solid mechanism was promoted for the growth mechanism of in situ grown SiC whiskers. Full article

The Al2O3/Ti(C,N) ceramic material added micron ZrO2 whisker and nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder was fabricated. The micron ZrO2 whisker was for the toughening and reinforcing phase and the nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder was the lubricant. For obtaining a ceramic material with optimal comprehensive mechanical properties and friction properties, the influences of different compositions of the ZrO2 whisker and nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder on the microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed, respectively. The result demonstrated that as the addition of the ZrO2 whisker was 6 vol% and the addition of the nano coated CaF2@Al(OH)3 powder was 10 vol%, the optimal self-lubricating ceramic material had optimal mechanical properties. The hardness of the ceramic material was 16.72 GPa, the flexural strength was 520 MPa and the fracture toughness reached 7.16 MPa·m1/2. The formation of the intragranular structure, whisker toughening and the phase transition of ZrO2 were the main mechanisms. Full article

Aiming at the contradiction between the lubricating performance and mechanical performance of self-lubricating ceramic tools. CaF2@Al(OH)3 particles were prepared by the heterogeneous nucleation method. An Al2O3/Ti(C,N) ceramic tool with CaF2@Al2(OH)3 particles and ZrO2 whiskers was prepared by hot press sintering (frittage). The cutting performances and wear mechanisms of this ceramic tool were investigated. Compared with the Al2O3/Ti(C,N) ceramic tool, the Al2O3/Ti(C,N)/ZrO2/CaF2@Al(OH)3 ceramic tool had lower cutting temperatures and surface roughness. When the cutting speed was increased from 100 m/min to 300 m/min, a lot of CaF2 was smeared onto the surface of the ceramic tool, and the flank wear of the Al2O3/Ti(C,N)/ZrO2/CaF2@Al(OH)3 ceramic tool was reduced. The main wear mechanisms of the Al2O3/Ti(C,N)/ZrO2/CaF2@Al(OH)3 ceramic tool were adhesive wear and micro-chipping. The formation of solid lubricating film and the improvement of fracture toughness by adding ZrO2 whiskers and CaF2@Al(OH)3 were important factors for the Al2O3/Ti(C,N)/ZrO2/CaF2@Al(OH)3 ceramic tool to have better cutting performances.
