To enhance the utilization efficiency of coal gangue aggregate, coarse aggregates are chemically modified with 5% sodium silicate solution. The effects of this modification on the compressive strength and microstructural characteristics of concrete are systematically investigated through integrated macro-testing and micro-characterization. By evaluating the compressive performance of modified coal gangue concrete blocks, the optimal mix ratio of each strength grade of blocks is determined. Experimental results indicate that the apparent density, water absorption, and crushing index of the modified coal gangue coarse aggregate exhibit better mechanical properties than the control group. The modified coal gangue coarse aggregate demonstrates improved mechanical performance, with the compressive strength of 28-day concrete showing a 15.3% increase relative to the control group. Furthermore, using a sodium silicate solution effectively enhances the interface transition zone’s performance between coal gangue coarse aggregate and cement mortar, improving the compactness of this interface. The modified coal gangue concrete blocks exhibit higher compressive strength than the original material. When the substitution rate remains constant, the compressive strength of modified coal gangue concrete decreases with increasing water–cement ratio. Similarly, at a constant water–binder ratio, compressive strength decreases with higher modified gangue aggregate replacement. Finally, compressive tests are conducted on masonry constructed with hollow blocks of strength grades MU7.5, MU10, and MU15. Then, a calculation model for the average compressive strength of modified coal gangue concrete hollow block masonry is proposed, providing theoretical support for its engineering application. The use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures offers environmental and economic advantages by reducing reliance on virgin aggregates and minimizing construction waste. However, the aged binder in RAP increases mixture stiffness, which can compromise fatigue resistance. This systematic review evaluates the influence of RAP content on fatigue performance compared to conventional mixtures, with a focus on the Indirect Tensile Test (IDT) as the primary assessment method. Following the parameters of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, five studies published between 2014 and 2024 were identified through searches in Web of Science, ScienceDirect, ASCE, and Scopus. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. The results indicate that although RAP enhances rutting resistance, higher contents (>30%) often lead to reduced fatigue performance due to binder hardening and reduced mixture flexibility. The incorporation of rejuvenators—such as heavy paraffinic extracts—and modifiers, including high-modulus agents, polymers, and epoxy binders, can partially restore aged binder properties and improve performance. Sustainable innovations, such as lignin-based industrial by-products and warm-mix asphalt technologies, show promise in balancing mechanical performance with reduced environmental impact. Variability in material sources, modification strategies, and test protocols limits direct comparability among studies, underscoring the need for standardized evaluation frameworks. Overall, this review highlights that optimizing RAP content and selecting effective rejuvenation or modification strategies are essential for achieving durable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible asphalt pavements. Future research should integrate advanced laboratory methods with performance-based design to enable high RAP utilization without compromising fatigue resistance. Full article

The use of mining by-products in bitumen and asphalt mixture modification has drawn a lot of interest lately since it can improve pavement performance while advancing the goals of the circular economy and environmental sustainability. Mining by-products such as steel slag, red mud, silica fume, and fly ash have demonstrated good results as sustainable materials for improving the chemical, mechanical, durability, and rheological properties of asphalt binders and mixtures while also reducing the environmental degradation brought about by the disposal of these by-products. This study reviews research efforts on mining by-products (specifically steel slag, silica fume, red mud, and fly ash) in asphalt concrete pavement construction, analyzing the existing research, with emphasis on their various applications in asphalt concrete, their benefits as sustainable asphalt concrete materials, and limitations connected to their use. This review concludes by providing future directions in the utilization of these mining by-products in asphalt concrete production. This review contributes to the development of cost-effective, eco-friendly, and high-performance road construction materials, helping the transition to sustainable infrastructure. Full article

Cementitious materials are susceptible to water ingress due to their hydrophilicity and porous microstructure, which can cause premature destruction and compromise long-term durability. Integral hydrophobic modification using alkyl silanes is an effective strategy for enhancing water resistance, while the influence of different silanes on early-age properties (within the first 7 d) of various binder systems remains unclear. This study investigates the rheology, flowability, setting behavior, reaction kinetics, compressive strength, and hydrophobicity of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and alkali-activated fly ash–slag (AAFS) pastes incorporating alkyl silanes of varying alkyl chain lengths, i.e., methyl-(C1TMS), butyl-(C4TMS), octyl-(C8TMS), and dodecyl-trimethoxysilane (C12TMS). In OPC, C1TMS reduced yield stress and plastic viscosity by 33.6% and 21.0%, respectively, and improved flowability by 27.6%, whereas C4TMS, C8TMS, and C12TMS showed the opposite effects. In contrast, the effect of alkyl silanes on rheology and flowability of AAFS was less pronounced. Silanes delayed setting of OPC and AAFS by 5.6–164.4%, with shorter alkyl chains causing greater retardation. C1TMS and C4TMS inhibited early-age heat release and decreased the 1-day compressive strength by 14.8–35.7% in OPC and 82.0–84.5% in AAFS, whereas longer-chain silanes had comparatively minor effects. The hydrophobic performance in both binder systems was strongly correlated with alkyl chain length. C8TMS exhibited the best hydrophobicity in OPC, achieving a water contact angle of 145° and a 75.7% reduction in water sorptivity, while C4TMS demonstrated the highest hydrophobicity in AAFS. This study provides fundamental guidance for the rational selection of alkyl silanes in OPC and AAFS systems, offering insights into the design of multifunctional water-resistant cementitious composites for marine structures, building facades, and other applications with waterproofing requirements. This study investigates the modification of bitumen using mechanochemically devulcanized crumb rubber. The objective of this research is to enhance the performance characteristics of bituminous binders while addressing the inherent limitations associated with conventional crumb rubber (CCR), such as insufficient dispersion, elevated viscosity, and phase instability. Preliminary chemical activation of the crumb rubber was performed using a planetary ball mill, followed by thermomechanical devulcanization on a two-roll open mixing mill. Structural features of the devulcanized crumb rubber were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, which confirmed the breakdown of S–S bonds. This study presents a comparative analysis of the performance characteristics of rubber–bitumen binders produced using both conventional rubber crumb (CRC) and devulcanized rubber crumb (DRC). The use of DCR, obtained mechanochemically from rubber waste, improved penetration, Fraass breaking point and the ring and ball softening point on average at high concentrations (20; 25% crumb rubber) compared to conventional crumb rubber by 33%, 66% and 2.4%, respectively. Optical microscopy revealed the formation of a uniform mesh-like rubber structure within the bitumen matrix, which contributes to enhanced performance characteristics of the modified binder and improved mechanical strength of the material. The key contribution of this work lies in the development and experimental validation of an efficient approach to deep devulcanization of crumb rubber via mechanochemical activation using readily available nitrogen-containing reagents. Furthermore, the study establishes a direct correlation between the degree of devulcanization, the dispersion quality of rubber particles within the bitumen matrix, and the resultant performance characteristics of the modified binder. With rising global temperatures and increasing sustainability demands, the need for advanced pavement solutions has never been greater. This study breaks new ground by integrating phase change materials (PCMs), including paraffin-based wax (Rubitherm RT55), hydrated salt (Climator Salt S10), and fatty acid (lauric acid), as binder modifiers within warm mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures. Moving beyond the traditional focus on binder-only modifications, this research utilizes recycled cigarette filters (CFs) as a dual-purpose fiber additive, directly reinforcing the asphalt mixture while simultaneously transforming a major urban waste stream into valuable infrastructure. The performance of the developed WMA mixture has been evaluated in terms of stiffness behavior using an Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) test, permanent deformation using a static creep strain test, and rutting resistance using the Hamburg wheel-track test. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the incorporation of PCMs and recycled CFs into WMA mixtures led to remarkable improvements in stiffness, deformation resistance, and rutting performance. Modified mixes consistently outperformed the control, achieving up to 15% higher stiffness after 7 days of curing, 36% lower creep strain after 4000 s, and 64% reduction in rut depth at 20,000 passes. Cost–benefit analysis and service life prediction show that, despite costing USD 0.71 more per square meter with 5 cm thickness, the modified WMA mixture delivers much greater durability and rutting resistance, extending service life to 19–29 years compared to 10–15 years for the control. This highlights the value of these modifications for durable, sustainable pavements. Full article

The problem of spreading harmful infections through contaminated surfaces has become more acute during the recent coronavirus pandemic. The design of self-cleaning materials, which can continuously decompose biological contaminants, is an urgent task for environmental protection and human health care. In this study, the surface of blended cotton/polyester fabric was functionalized with N-doped TiO2 (TiO2-N) nanoparticles using titanium(IV) isopropoxide as a binder to form durable photoactive coating and additionally decorated with Cu species to promote its self-cleaning properties. The photocatalytic ability of the material with photoactive coating was investigated in oxidation of acetone vapor, degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragments of various lengths, and inactivation of PA136 bacteriophage virus and Candida albicans fungi under visible light and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation. The kinetic aspects of inactivation and degradation processes were studied using the methods of infrared (IR) spectroscopy, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), double-layer plaque assay, and ten-fold dilution. The results of experiments showed that the textile fabric modified with TiO2-N photocatalyst exhibited photoinduced self-cleaning properties and provided efficient degradation of all studied contaminants under exposure to both UVA and visible light. Additional modification of the material with Cu species substantially improved its self-cleaning properties, even in the absence of light. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the environmentally friendly management and reutilization of electronic waste (e-waste) plastics in flexible pavement construction. The discussion begins with an overview of e-waste management challenges and outlines key recycling approaches for converting plastic waste into asphalt-compatible materials. This review then discusses the types of e-waste plastics used for asphalt modification, their incorporation methods, and compatibility challenges. Physical and chemical treatment techniques, including the use of free radical initiators, are then explored for improving dispersion and performance. Additionally, in situations where advanced pretreatment methods are not applicable due to cost, safety, or technical constraints, the application of alternative approaches, such as the use of low-cost complementary additives, is discussed as a practical solution to enhance compatibility and performance. Finally, the influence of e-waste plastics on the conventional and rheological properties of asphalt binders, as well as the performance of asphalt mixtures, is also evaluated. Findings indicate that e-waste plastics, when combined with appropriate pretreatment methods and complementary additives, can enhance workability, cold-weather cracking resistance, high-temperature anti-rutting performance, and resistance against moisture-induced damage while also offering environmental and economic benefits. This review highlights the potential of e-waste plastics as sustainable asphalt modifiers and provides insights across the full utilization pathway, from recovery to in-field performance. The utilization of recycled concrete aggregate presents an effective solution for construction waste mitigation. However, concrete service in sulfate environments leads to sulfate ion retention in recycled aggregates, substantially impairing their quality and requiring modification approaches. A critical question remains whether traditional recycled aggregate modification techniques can effectively enhance the performance of these sulfate-containing recycled aggregates (SRA). Cement paste wrapping in various proportions was used in this investigation to enhance SRA. The performance of both SRA and modified aggregates was systematically assessed through measurements of apparent density, water absorption, crushing value, and microhardness. Microstructural analysis of the cement wrapping modification mechanism was conducted by scanning electron microscopy coupled with mercury intrusion porosimetry. Results revealed that internal sulfate addition decreased the crushing value and increased the water absorption of recycled aggregates, primarily due to micro-cracks formed by expansion. Additionally, the pores were occupied by erosion products, leading to a slight increase in the apparent density of aggregates. The performance of SRA was effectively enhanced by cement paste wrapping at a 0.6 water–binder ratio, whereas it was negatively impacted by a ratio of 1.0. The modifying effect became even more effective when 15% fly ash was added to the wrapping paste. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the interface of SRA was predominantly composed of gypsum crystals. Cement paste wrapping greatly enhanced the original interface structure, despite a new dense interface formed in the modified aggregates. Full article

The modern road industry requires a more effective solution according to efficiency and minimizing environmental burden. This article discusses the use of recycled materials to modify bitumen binders within the concept of the circular economy. The main aim of this article was to create a new composite based on waste materials, including polymer waste and rubber crumb. The important element is the usage of locally available waste that has not been investigated previously as a material for asphalt modification. The prepared composition was preliminarily assessed according to chemical composition. Next, research dedicated to road application was conducted, including the following: determination of the resistance to hardening, aging under the influence of high temperature and air, as well as oxidation processes, assessment of penetration, and evaluation of the softening point. The conducted studies showed that the new composites with the addition of polymer waste and rubber crumb improve the thermal stability, elasticity, and resistance of bitumen to aging. Optimum concentrations of modifiers were determined that provide an increase in the performance characteristics of bitumen, including a decrease in the brittleness temperature and an increase in the softening temperature. The obtained results demonstrate the potential for the introduction of new composites based on recycled materials in road construction, contributing to increased environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. Waste cooking oil (WCO) plays different roles in modified asphalt and significantly affects the performance of the binder. However, a systematic comparative study is still lacking in the existing research. This study investigates the effects of WCO used as a swelling agent for rubber powder (RP) and as a compatibilizer in rubber powder-modified asphalt (RPMA) on the performance of modified asphalt. Specifically, the microstructure and functional groups of WCO-coated RP were first characterized. Then, RPMAs with different RP dosages were prepared, and the storage stability and rheological properties of RPMAs were thoroughly investigated. Finally, the flue gas emission characteristics of different RPMAs at 30% RP dosing were further analyzed, and the corresponding inhibition mechanisms were proposed. The results showed that the RP coated by WCO was fully solubilized internally, and the WCO formed a uniform and continuous coating film on the RP surface. Comparative analysis revealed that when WCO was used as a swelling agent, the prepared S-RPMA exhibited superior storage stability. At a 30% RP content, the softening point difference value of S-RPMA was only 1.8 °C, and the reduction rate of the segregation index reached 40.91%. Surprisingly, after WCO was used to coat the RP, the average concentrations of VOCs and H2S in S-RPMA30 were reduced to 146.7 mg/m3 and 10.6 ppm, respectively, representing decreases of 20.8% and 22.1% compared with the original RPMA30. These findings demonstrate that using WCO as a swelling agent enhances both the physical stability and environmental performance of RPMA, offering valuable insights for the rational application and optimization of WCO incorporation methods in asphalt modification. It also makes meaningful contributions to the fields of coating science and sustainable materials engineering. Full article

To enhance the high-temperature oxidation resistance of chromium carbide metal ceramic coatings, micro/nanoparticle modification was applied to the alloy binder phase of the typical Cr3C2-NiCr coating. This led to the development of Cr3C2-NiCrCoMo and Cr3C2-NiCrCoMo/nano-CeO2 coatings with superior high-temperature oxidation performance. This study compares the high-temperature oxidation behavior of these coating samples and explores their respective oxidation mechanisms. The results indicate that the addition of CoCrMo improves the compatibility between the oxide film and the coating, enhancing the microstructure and integrity of the oxide film. Compared to Cr3C2-NiCrCoMo coatings, the incorporation of nano-CeO2 promotes the reaction between oxides in the Cr3C2-NiCrCoMo/nano-CeO2 coating, increasing the content of binary spinel phases, reducing thermal stress at the oxide–coating interface, and improving the adhesion strength of the oxide film. As a result, the oxidation rate of the coating is reduced, and its oxidation resistance is improved. Full article

Characterization of Asphalt Binder and Mixture for Enhanced Railway Applications

Although asphalt mixtures can be applied to railway tracks due to their viscoelastic properties, caution is required, as their ductility and brittleness are highly sensitive to temperature variations. In recent years, interest in the application of asphalt in railway infrastructure has increased, driven by the development of modified mixtures and the broader availability of performance-enhancing additives. Additionally, evaluation methods for railway tracks should be adapted to account for the distinct loading mechanisms involved, which differ from those of conventional roadways. In this study, the comprehensive properties of asphalt binders, mixtures, and testing methods—including physical and engineering characteristics—were assessed to improve the performance of asphalt concrete layers for potential applications in railroad infrastructure. The results of this study indicate that (1) the higher the performance grade (PG), the higher the indirect tensile strength (ITS) value achieved by the 13 mm mixture using PG76-22, which is higher than that of the PG64-22 mixture. This indicates that higher PG grades and modification contribute to improved tensile strength, beneficial for upper layers subjected to dynamic railroad loads. (2) The tensile strength ratio (TSR) increased from the unmodified mixture to over 92% in mixtures containing crumb rubber modifier (CRM) and styrenic thermoplastic elastomer (STE), demonstrating enhanced durability under freeze–thaw conditions. (3) Wheel tracking test results showed that modified mixtures exhibited more than twice the rutting resistance compared to PG64-22. The 13 mm aggregate mixtures also generally performed better than the 19 mm mixtures, indicating reduced permanent deformation under repeated loading. (4) It was concluded that asphalt is a suitable material for railroads, as its overall characteristics comply with standard specifications. Full article

USP (usual temperature pitch)-modified asphalt optimizes its rheological properties through reactions between the modifier and the asphalt. This significantly enhances the high- and low-temperature adaptability and environmental friendliness of asphalt. It has now become an important research direction in the field of highway engineering. This article systematically investigates the impact of different dosages of USP warm mix modifier on asphalt binders through rheological and microstructural analysis. Base asphalt and SBS-modified asphalt were blended with USP at varying ratios. Conventional tests (penetration, softening point, ductility) were combined with dynamic shear rheometry (DSR, AASHTO T315) and bending beam rheometry (BBR, AASHTO T313) to characterize temperature/frequency-dependent viscoelasticity. High-temperature performance was quantified via multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR, ASTM D7405), while fluorescence microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy elucidated modification mechanisms. Key findings reveal that (1) optimal USP thresholds exist at 4.0% for base asphalt and 4.5% for SBS modified asphalt, beyond which the rutting resistance factor (G*/sin δ) decreases by 20–31% due to plasticization effects; (2) USP significantly improves low-temperature flexibility, reducing creep stiffness at −12 °C by 38% (USP-modified) and 35% (USP/SBS composite) versus controls; (3) infrared spectroscopy displays that no new characteristic peaks appeared in the functional group region of 4000–1300 cm−1 for the two types of modified asphalt after the incorporation of USP, indicating that no chemical changes occurred in the asphalt; and (4) fluorescence imaging confirmed that the incorporation of USP led to disintegration of the spatial network structure of the control asphalt, explaining the reason for the deterioration of high-temperature performance. Cement–based mortars are essential in both modern construction and heritage conservation, where balancing mechanical strength with material compatibility is crucial. Mortars containing ––binders with low hydraulic activity, such as CEM II/B–L, often exhibit increased porosity and diminished strength, limiting their suitability for structurally demanding applications. This study investigates the potential of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to enhance the mechanical and microstructural properties of mortars formulated with both CEM II/B–L and CEM I binders. The influence of CNT incorporation was systematically assessed through compressive and flexural strength tests, vacuum saturation tests, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results demonstrate significant mechanical improvements attributable to nanoscale mechanisms including crack bridging, pore–filling, and stress redistribution. Microstructural characterization revealed a refined pore network, increased densification of the matrix, and morphological modifications of hydration products. These findings underscore the effectiveness of CNT reinforcement in cementitious matrices and highlight the critical role of binder composition in influencing these effects. This work advances the development of high–performance mortar systems, optimized for enhanced structural integrity and long–term durability. Full article
