High penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) into the power grid could diminish the rotational inertia offered by a traditional power system and thus impact frequency stability. Several techniques are adopted to provide virtual inertial support to the grid for a short duration in the presence of IBRs. This paper uses the combined inertia support of a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) and a Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-fed Electric Vehicle Fast Charging System (EVFCS) is used to provide virtual inertia support to the grid. The Voltage Source Converter is designed to provide DC bus voltage regulation. Coordinated control of DAB converters and VSCs for mitigating frequency oscillations using cascaded droop-integrated Proportional Integral (PI) controllers is proposed. An aggregated low-frequency model of a DAB converter is considered in this work. The inertia of the DC link capacitor of the VSCs and battery is sequentially extracted to offer grid frequency support. In this work, the single droop control, dual droop control, grid-forming and Augmented Frequency Support (AFS) modes are explored to provide virtual inertia support to the grid. Full article

The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in unbalanced distribution networks presents significant challenges for optimal operation, particularly concerning power loss minimization and voltage regulation. This paper proposes a comprehensive Optimal Power Flow (OPF) model that coordinates various assets, including on-load tap changers (OLTCs), reactive power compensators, and controllable electric vehicles (EVs). To solve this complex and non-convex optimization problem, we developed the Shrinking Net Algorithm (SNA), a novel metaheuristic with mathematically proven convergence. The proposed framework was validated using the standard IEEE 123-bus test system. The results demonstrate significant operational improvements: total active power loss was reduced by 32.1%, from 96.103 kW to 65.208 kW. Furthermore, all node voltage violations were eliminated, with the minimum system voltage improving from 0.937 p.u. to a compliant 0.973 p.u. The findings confirm that the proposed SNA is an effective and robust tool for this application, highlighting the substantial economic and technical benefits of coordinated asset control for modern distribution system operators. A hybrid control architecture is proposed for enhancing the stability and energy management of DC microgrids (DCMGs) integrating photovoltaic generation, batteries, and supercapacitors. The approach combines nonlinear Sliding Mode Control (SMC) for fast and robust DC bus voltage regulation with a Deep Q-Learning (DQL) agent that learns optimal high-level policies for charging, discharging, and load management. This dual-layer design leverages the real-time precision of SMC and the adaptive decision-making capability of DQL to achieve dynamic power sharing and balanced state-of-charge levels across storage units, thereby reducing asymmetric wear. Simulation results under variable operating scenarios showed that the proposed method significantly improvedvoltage stability, loweredthe occurrence of deep battery discharges, and decreased load shedding compared to conventional fuzzy-logic-based energymanagement, highlighting its effectiveness and resilience in the presence of renewable generation variability and fluctuating load demands. Bus voltage regulation and accurate power sharing constitute two pivotal control objectives in DC microgrids. The conventional droop control method inherently suffers from steady-state voltage deviation. Centralized control introduces vulnerability to single-point failures, with significantly degraded stability under abnormal operating conditions. Distributed control strategies mitigate this vulnerability but require careful balancing between control effectiveness and communication costs. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid hierarchical control architecture integrating multiple control strategies to achieve near-zero steady-state deviation voltage regulation and precise power sharing in DC microgrids. Capitalizing on the complementary advantages of different control methods, an operation-condition-adaptive hierarchical control (OCAHC) strategy is proposed. The proposed method improves reliability over centralized control under communication failures, and achieves better performance than distributed control under normal conditions. With a fault-detection logic module, the OCAHC framework enables automatic switching to maintain high control performance across different operating scenarios. For the inherent trade-off between consensus algorithm performance and communication costs, a communication topology optimization model is established with communication cost as the objective, subject to constraints including communication intensity, algorithm convergence under both normal and N-1 conditions, and control performance requirements. An accelerated optimization approach employing node-degree computation and equivalent topology reduction is proposed to enhance computational efficiency. Finally, case studies on a DC microgrid with five DGs verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and methods. Full article

Microgrid systems play a vital role in managing distributed energy resources like solar, wind, batteries, and supercapacitors. However, maintaining stable AC/DC bus voltages and minimizing grid reliance under dynamic conditions is challenging. Traditional control methods such as Sliding Mode Controllers (SMCs) suffer from issues like chattering and slow convergence, reducing practical effectiveness. This paper proposes a hybrid AC/DC microgrid that operates in both grid-connected and islanded modes while ensuring voltage stability and efficient energy use. A Conditional-Based Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Controller (CBSTSMC) is employed to address the limitations of conventional SMCs. The CBSTSMC enhances system performance by reducing chattering, improving convergence speed, and offering better tracking and disturbance rejection. To further refine controller performance, an Improved Grey Wolf Optimization (IGWO) algorithm is used for gain tuning, resulting in enhanced system robustness and precision. An Energy Management System (EMS) is integrated to intelligently regulate power flow based on renewable generation and storage availability. The proposed system is tested in real time using a Texas Instruments Delfino C2000 microcontroller through a Controller-in-the-Loop (CIL) setup. The simulation and hardware results confirm the system’s ability to maintain stability and reliability under diverse operating scenarios, proving its suitability for future smart grid applications. Microgrids have emerged as a crucial solution for addressing environmental concerns, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy sustainability. By incorporating renewable energy sources like solar and wind, microgrids improve energy efficiency and offer a cleaner alternative to conventional power grids. Among various microgrid architectures, DC microgrids are gaining significant attention due to their higher efficiency, reduced reactive power losses, and direct compatibility with renewable energy sources and energy storage systems. However, DC microgrids face stability challenges, particularly due to the presence of constant power loads (CPLs), which exhibit negative incremental impedance characteristics. These loads can destabilize the system, leading to oscillations and performance degradation. This paper explores various control strategies designed to enhance the stability and dynamic response of DC microgrids, with a particular focus on interleaved boost converters (IBCs) interfaced with CPLs. Traditional control methods, including proportional–integral (PI) and sliding mode control (SMC), have shown limitations in handling dynamic variations and disturbances. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a novel RST-based control strategy for IBCs, offering improved stability, adaptability, and disturbance rejection. The efficacy of the RST controller is validated through extensive simulations tests, demonstrating competitive performance in maintaining DC bus voltage regulation and current distribution. Key performance indicators demonstrate competitive performance, including settling times below 40 ms for voltage transients, overshoot limited to ±2%, minimal voltage deviation from the reference, and precise current sharing between interleaved phases. The findings contribute to advancing the stability and efficiency of DC microgrids, facilitating their broader adoption in modern energy systems. Full article

This paper presents an intelligent communication architecture, designed to manage multiple power devices operating within a shared Low-Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) bus. These devices act either as energy consumers, e.g., Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers, Power Distribution Units (PDUs), or as sources and regulators, e.g., Alternating Current-to-Direct Current (AC/DC) converters, energy storage system (ESS) units. Communication is established using industrial protocols such as Modular Digital Bus (MODBUS) over Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), and Controller Area Network (CAN). The proposed system supports both data acquisition and configuration of field devices. It exposes their information to an Energy Management System (EMS) via a MODBUS TCP server. A key contribution of this work is the integration of a lightweight Machine Learning (ML)-based data prioritization mechanism that dynamically adjusts the update frequency of each MODBUS parameter based on its current relevance. This ML-based method has been prototyped and evaluated within a virtualized Internet of Things (IoT) gateway environment. It enables real-time, efficient, and scalable communication without altering the EMS or disrupting legacy protocol operations. Furthermore, the proposed approach allows for early testing and validation of the prioritization strategy before full hardware integration in the demonstrators planned as part of the SHIFT2DC project under the Horizon Europe program. Modern distribution networks are increasingly affected by the widespread adoption of photovoltaic (PV) generation and electric vehicles (EVs). The variability of PV output and the fluctuating demand of EVs may cause voltage violations that threaten the safe operation of active distribution networks (ADNs). This paper proposes a voltage control strategy for ADNs to address the voltage violation problem by utilizing the control flexibility of EV charging stations (EVCSs). In the proposed strategy, a state-driven margin algorithm is first employed to generate training data comprising response capability (RC) of EVs and state parameters, which are used to train a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model for real-time estimation of EVCS response capability. To account for uncertainties in EV departure times, a relevance vector machine (RVM) model is applied to refine the estimated RC of EVCSs. Then, based on the estimated RC of EVCSs, a second-order cone programming (SOCP)-based voltage regulation problem is formulated to obtain the optimal dispatch signal of EVCSs. Finally, a broadcast control scheme is adopted to distribute the dispatch signal across individual charging piles and the energy storage system (ESS) within each EVCS to realize the voltage regulation. Simulation results on the IEEE 34-bus feeder validate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed approach. Full article

To effectively address challenges posed by high-penetration renewable energy to power system operation and reserves, this paper proposes a novel research framework. The framework considers transmission–distribution coordinated dispatch and optimizes reserve capacity. First, the framework addresses the volatility and uncertainty of wind and solar power output. It constructs a three-dimensional objective function incorporating generation cost, spinning reserve cost, and linear wind/solar curtailment penalties as core components. The study uses the IEEE 30-bus system as the transmission network and the IEEE 33-bus system as the distribution network to build a transmission–distribution coordinated optimization model. Power dynamic mutual support across voltage levels is achieved through tie transformers. Second, the framework designs three typical scenarios for comparative analysis. These include separate dispatch of transmission and distribution networks, coordinated dispatch of transmission and distribution networks, and a fixed reserve ratio mode. The approach breaks through the limitations of traditional fixed reserve allocation. It optimizes the coordinated mechanism between reserve capacity spatiotemporal allocation and renewable energy accommodation. Case study results demonstrate that the proposed coordinated optimization scheme reduces total system operating costs and wind/solar curtailment rates. This is achieved by exploiting the potential of regulation resources on both the transmission and distribution sides. The results verify the significant advantages of transmission–distribution coordination in improving reserve resource allocation efficiency and promoting renewable energy accommodation. The approach helps enhance power grid operational economics and reliability. Full article

In microgrids, battery chargers/dischargers are used to manage power flow between the battery and the DC bus and to regulate the DC bus voltage, ensuring safe operating conditions for sources and loads. These actions contribute to enhancing the sustainability of the microgrid by improving energy efficiency, extending battery life, and ensuring reliable operation. The classical converter adopted to implement the battery chargers/dischargers is the boost converter, which avoids high current harmonic injection into the battery because of its continuous input current. But due to the discontinuous output current, it introduces high current harmonics into the DC bus. This also occurs in Sepic, Zeta, or other DC/DC converters with discontinuous input or output currents. One exception is the Cuk converter, which has both continuous input and output currents. However, in the Cuk converter, the intermediate capacitor voltage is higher than the input and output voltages, thus imposing high stress on the semiconductors and requiring a costly capacitor with high energy storage. Therefore, this paper proposes the design of a battery charger/discharger based on a non-electrolytic capacitor boost converter. This topology provides continuous input and output currents, which reduces harmonic component injection, extends battery life, and increases operation efficiency. Moreover, it requires a lower intermediate capacitor voltage, thereby enhancing reliability. The design of this battery charger/discharger requires an adaptive sliding-mode controller to ensure global stability and accurate bus voltage regulation. A formal stability analysis and design equations are provided. The proposed solution is validated through detailed simulations, while the adaptive sliding-mode controller is specifically tested using a detailed software-in-the-loop approach. Full article

Islanded DC microgrids face challenges in voltage stability and communication overhead due to renewable energy variability. A novel enhanced distributed coordinated control framework, based on adaptive event-triggered mechanisms, is developed for the efficient management of multiple hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) in islanded DC microgrids (MGs). We propose a hierarchical distributed control framework integrating ANN-based controllers and adaptive event-triggered mechanisms to dynamically regulate power flow and minimise communication. This system utilises a hierarchical coordinated control method (HCCM) with primary virtual resistance droop control integrated with state-of-charge (SoC) management and secondary control for voltage regulation and proportional current distribution through optimised communication networks. The integration of artificial neural network (ANN)-based controllers alongside traditional PI control leads to an improvement in system responsiveness. The control approach dynamically adjusts the trigger parameters to minimise communication overhead with tight voltage regulation. An extensive simulation using MATLAB/Simulink shows how the system can effectively manage variability in renewable energy sources and maintain stable voltage profiles with precise power distribution and minimal bus voltage fluctuations. Simulations confirm enhanced voltage regulation (±0.5% deviation), proportional current sharing (98% accuracy), and 60% communication reduction under load transients (outcomes). Full article

The widespread deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) has introduced substantial challenges to electricity pricing, grid stability, and renewable energy integration. This paper proposes a real-time pricing optimization framework for large-scale EV charging networks incorporating renewable intermittency, demand elasticity, and infrastructure constraints within a high-dimensional optimization model. The core objective is to dynamically determine spatiotemporal electricity prices that simultaneously reduce system peak load, improve renewable energy utilization, and minimize user charging costs. A rigorous mathematical formulation is developed integrating over 40 system-level constraints, including power balance, transmission capacity, renewable curtailment, carbon targets, voltage regulation, demand-side flexibility, social participation, and cyber resilience. Real-time electricity prices are treated as dynamic decision variables influenced by charging station utilization, elasticity response curves, and the marginal cost of renewable and grid-supplied electricity. The problem is solved over 96 time intervals using a hybrid solution approach, with benchmark comparisons against mixed-integer programming (MILP) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based baselines. A comprehensive case study is conducted on a 500-station EV charging network serving 10,000 vehicles integrated with a modified IEEE 118-bus grid model and 800 MW of variable renewable energy. Historical charging data with ±12% stochastic demand variation and real-world solar and wind profiles are used to simulate realistic operational conditions. Results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves a 23.4% average peak load reduction per station, a 17.9% improvement in renewable energy utilization, and user cost savings of up to 30% compared to baseline flat-rate pricing. Utilization imbalances across the network are reduced, with congestion mitigation observed at over 90% of high-traffic stations. The real-time pricing model successfully aligns low-price windows with high-renewable periods and off-peak hours, achieving time-synchronized load shifting and system-wide flexibility. Visual analytics including high-resolution 3D surface plots and disaggregated bar charts reveal structured patterns in demand–price interactions, confirming the model’s ability to generate smooth, non-disruptive pricing trajectories. The results underscore the viability of advanced optimization-based pricing strategies for scalable, clean, and responsive EV charging infrastructure management in renewable-rich grid environments. This paper presents a hybrid optimization framework for solving the optimal reactive power compensation problem in medium-voltage smart distribution networks. Leveraging Julia’s computational environment, the proposed method combines the global search capabilities of the Chu & Beasley genetic algorithm (CBGA) with the local refinement efficiency of the interior-point optimizer (IPOPT). The objective is to minimize the annualized operating costs by reducing active power losses while considering the investment and operating costs associated with thyristor-switched capacitors (TSCs). A key contribution of this work is the comparative assessment of fixed and time-varying reactive power injection strategies. Simulation results on the IEEE 33- and 69-bus test feeders demonstrate that the proposed CBGA-IPOPT framework achieves annualized cost reductions of up to 11.22% and 12.58% (respectively) under fixed injection conditions. With variable injection, cost savings increase to 12.43% and 14.08%. A time-domain analysis confirms improved voltage regulation, substation reactive demand reductions exceeding 500 kvar, and peak loss reductions of up to 32% compared to the uncompensated case. Benchmarking shows that the hybrid framework not only consistently outperforms state-of-the-art metaheuristics (the sine-cosine algorithm, the particle swarm optimizer, the black widow optimizer, and the artificial hummingbird algorithm) in terms of solution quality but also demonstrates high solution repeatability across multiple runs, underscoring its robustness. The proposed method is directly applicable to real-world distribution systems, offering a scalable and cost-effective solution for reactive power planning in smart grids. Full article

State-of-charge (SOC) and temperature inconsistencies among lithium-ion battery cells can significantly degrade the performance, safety, and lifespan of battery packs. To address this issue, this paper proposes a dynamic balancing strategy that simultaneously regulates both SOC and cell temperature in real time. Each battery cell is connected to an individual Boost converter, enabling independent control of energy flow. An outer loop is adopted to stabilize the pack-level bus voltage. The balancing factors for SOC and temperature are adaptively fused using a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, which dynamically adjusts the weightings based on real-time operating conditions. This approach allows the controller to prioritize either thermal or electrical balance when needed, ensuring robust performance under varying load and environmental disturbances. Simulation-based validation on a multi-cell lithium-ion pack demonstrates that the proposed method effectively reduces SOC and temperature deviation, improves pack-level energy utilization, and extends operational stability compared to fixed-weight balancing strategies. The increasing depletion of fossil fuels and their environmental impact have led to the development of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. By combining fuel cells with batteries, these vehicles offer greater efficiency and zero emissions. However, their energy management remains a challenge requiring advanced strategies. This paper presents a comparative study of two developed energy management strategies: a deterministic rule-based approach and a fuzzy logic approach. The proposed system consists of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the primary energy source and a lithium-ion battery as the secondary source. A comprehensive model of the hybrid powertrain is developed to evaluate energy distribution and system behaviour. The control system includes a model predictive control (MPC) method for fuel cell current regulation and a PI controller to maintain DC bus voltage stability. The proposed strategies are evaluated under standard driving cycles (UDDS and NEDC) using a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. Key performance indicators such as fuel efficiency, hydrogen consumption, battery state-of-charge, and voltage stability are examined to assess the effectiveness of each approach. Simulation results demonstrate that the deterministic strategy offers a structured and computationally efficient solution, while the fuzzy logic approach provides greater adaptability to dynamic driving conditions, leading to improved overall energy efficiency. These findings highlight the critical role of advanced control strategies in improving FCHEV performance and offer valuable insights for future developments in hybrid-vehicle energy management.
