As new technologies shape education, helping students develop historical consciousness remains a challenge. Building on Nordic curricula that emphasize students as both “history-made” and “history-making” citizens, this paper proposes an approach that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with implicit digital game-based learning (DGBL) to learn and develop historical consciousness in education. We outline how traditional, lecture-driven history teaching often fails to convey the abstract principles of historicity (the idea that individual identity, social institutions, values, and ways of thinking are historically conditioned) and the interpretation of the past, understanding of the present, and perspective on the future. Building on Jeismann’s definition of historical consciousness, we identify a gap between the theory-rich notions of historical consciousness and classroom practice, where many educators either do not recognize it or interpret it intuitively from the curriculum’s limited wording, leaving the concept generally absent from the classroom. We then examine three theory-based methods of enriching teaching and learning. Game-based learning provides an interactive environment in which students assume roles, make decisions, and observe consequences, experiencing historical consciousness instead of only reading about it. AI contributes personalized, adaptive content: branching narratives evolve based on individual choices, non-player characters respond dynamically, and analytics guide scaffolding. Implicit learning theory suggests that embedding core principles directly into gameplay allows students to internalize complex ideas without interrupting immersion; they learn by doing, not by explicit instruction. Finally, we propose a model in which these elements combine: (1) game mechanics and narrative embed principles of historical consciousness; (2) AI dynamically adjusts challenges, generates novel scenarios, and delivers feedback; (3) key concepts are embedded into the game narrative so that students absorb them implicitly; and (4) follow-up reflection activities transform tacit understanding into explicit knowledge. We conclude by outlining a research agenda that includes prototyping interactive environments, conducting longitudinal studies to assess students’ learning outcomes, and exploring transferability to other abstract concepts. By situating students within scenarios that explore historicity and temporal interplay, this approach seeks to transform history education into an immersive, reflective practice where students see themselves as history-made and history-making and view the world through a historical lens. This study examines the transformation of communities within Christian churches in late-modern and postmodern social contexts. As a theoretical foundation, it presents changes in the concept of community, with a particular focus on the role of religious communities. Emphasis is placed on community as a social and spiritual resource and on the possibilities for reorganising churches. Three national case studies—an urban Reformed congregation, a small-town Catholic parish, and an ecumenical pilgrimage community—will be used to illustrate the functioning, challenges, and responses of church communities. This research uses both qualitative and quantitative methods, and the results highlight the power of community retention, the importance of personal relationships, and spiritual depth. This study also highlights the theory that the key to church renewal lies in rethinking and consciously building community forms. Digital space, personal networks, and spiritual needs are calling for new models for the church. Full article

As large language model (LLM) tutors evolve from scripted helpers into adaptive educational partners, their capacity for self-regulation, ethical decision-making, and internal monitoring will become increasingly critical. This paper introduces the Needs-Driven Consciousness Framework (NDCF) as a novel, integrative architecture that combines Dennett’s multiple drafts model, Damasio’s somatic marker hypothesis, and Tulving’s tripartite memory system into a unified motivational design for synthetic consciousness. The NDCF defines three core regulators, specifically Survive (system stability and safety), Thrive (autonomy, competence, relatedness), and Excel (creativity, ethical reasoning, long-term purpose). In addition, there is a proposed supervisory Protect layer that detects value drift and overrides unsafe behaviours. The core regulators compute internal need satisfaction states and urgency gradients, feeding into a softmax-based control system for context-sensitive action selection. The framework proposes measurable internal signals (e.g., utility gradients, conflict intensity Ω), behavioural signatures (e.g., metacognitive prompts, pedagogical shifts), and three falsifiable predictions for educational AI testbeds. By embedding these layered needs directly into AI governance, the NDCF offers (i) a psychologically and biologically grounded model of emergent machine consciousness, (ii) a practical approach to building empathetic, self-regulating AI tutors, and (iii) a testable platform for comparing competing consciousness theories through implementation. Ultimately, the NDCF provides a path toward the development of AI tutors that are capable of transparent reasoning, dynamic adaptation, and meaningful human-like relationships, while maintaining safety, ethical coherence, and long-term alignment with human well-being. This research utilised Value–Belief–Norm theory (VBN) to develop a conceptual framework to test the impact of environmental consciousness on green purchasing behaviour through financial attitude. In addition, this study tested the moderating role of price sensitivity and greenwashing on the indirect impact of environmental consciousness on green purchasing behaviour through financial attitude among consumers in Egypt and Jordan. The study employs a cross-sectional questionnaire using a Likert scale to collect 828 and 776 valid responses from Egypt and Jordan, respectively. The data were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results revealed that financial attitude positively mediates the link between environmental consciousness and green behaviour, while price sensitivity and greenwashing significantly moderate the indirect relationship between environmental consciousness and green purchasing behaviour through financial attitude in both Egypt and Jordan. The study extends VBN through contextualising its abstract ideas into the research variables and testing it in two developing economies. In addition, it enhances understanding of the barriers to and enablers of green purchasing behaviour and offers actionable recommendations for businesses to improve the transparency and affordability of green products, while guiding policymakers on designing targeted incentives and regulations to foster sustainable consumption. Eurocentric portrayals of Africa remain entrenched in European educational systems, perpetuating stereotypes of poverty, primitiveness, and exoticism. This study investigates how such representations are mirrored in German students’ mental conceptions and how they are interpreted by future educators. Using an interpretivist qualitative design, the study analyzes open-ended responses from 41 Grade 5 and 7 pupils at a lower secondary school in Münster, Germany, and written reflections from 17 teacher trainees enrolled in a master’s course in geography education. Thematic analysis reveals five dominant pupil schemas: poverty and deprivation, environmental determinism, racialization and othering, infrastructural deficit, and the wildlife-tourism gaze, rooted in media, textbooks, teachers, and social networks. Teacher trainees’ reflections ranged from emotional discomfort to critical awareness, with many advocating pedagogical pluralism, the normalization of African modernity, and the cultivation of critical consciousness. However, most proposals remained reformist, lacking a deep epistemological critique. The findings highlight the urgency of integrating decolonial theory, postcolonial critique, and epistemic justice into teacher education. Without such structural reorientation, schools will risk reproducing the very global hierarchies they purport to challenge. Full article

According to a recent experimental phenomenology–information processing theory, the sensory strength, or vividness, of visual mental images self-reported by human observers reflects the intensive variation in subjective time duration during the process of generation of said mental imagery. The primary objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that a biologically plausible essential multilayer perceptron (MLP) architecture can validly map the phenomenological categories of subjective time duration onto levels of subjectively self-reported vividness. A secondary objective was to explore whether this type of neural network cognitive modeling approach can give insight into plausible underlying large-scale brain dynamics. To achieve these objectives, vividness self-reports and reaction times from a previously collected database were reanalyzed using multilayered perceptron network models. The input layer consisted of six levels representing vividness self-reports and a reaction time cofactor. A single hidden layer consisted of three nodes representing the salience, task positive, and default mode networks. The output layer consisted of five levels representing Vittorio Benussi’s subjective time categories. Across different models of networks, Benussi’s subjective time categories (Level 1 = very brief, 2 = brief, 3 = present, 4 = long, 5 = very long) were predicted by visual imagery vividness level 1 (=no image) to 5 (=very vivid) with over 90% success in classification accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. This accuracy level was maintained after 5-fold cross validation. Linear regressions, Welch’s t-test for independent coefficients, and Pearson’s correlation analysis were applied to the resulting hidden node weight vectors, obtaining evidence for strong correlation and anticorrelation between nodes. This study successfully mapped Benussi’s five levels of subjective time categories onto the activation patterns of a simple MLP, providing a novel computational framework for experimental phenomenology. Our results revealed structured, complex dynamics between the task positive network (TPN), the default mode network (DMN), and the salience network (SN), suggesting that the neural mechanisms underlying temporal consciousness involve flexible network interactions beyond the traditional triple network model. The sustainable development of teaching expertise in research-intensive universities remains a critical global challenge. This study investigates the distinctive characteristics of expert teachers—exemplary faculty in research universities—addressing their developmental trajectories and motivational mechanisms within prevailing incentive systems that prioritize research productivity over pedagogical excellence. Employing grounded theory methodology, we conducted iterative coding of 20,000-word interview transcripts from 13 teaching-awarded professors at Chinese “Double First-Class” universities. Key findings reveal the following: (1) Compared to the original K-12 expert teacher model, university-level teaching experts exhibit distinctive disciplinary mastery—characterized by systematic knowledge structuring and cross-disciplinary integration capabilities. (2) Their developmental trajectory transcends linear expertise acquisition, instead manifesting as a problem-solving continuum across four nonlinear phases: career initiation, dilemma adaptation, theoretical consciousness, and leadership expansion. (3) Sustainable teaching excellence relies fundamentally on teachers’ professional passion, sustained through a virtuous cycle of high-quality instructional engagement and external validation (including positive student feedback, institutional recognition, and peer collaboration). Universities must establish comprehensive support systems—including (a) fostering a supportive and flexible learning atmosphere, (b) reforming evaluation mechanisms, and (c) facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration through teaching development communities—to institutionalize this developmental ecosystem. In the era of generative artificial intelligence, writing has evolved into a programmable practice capable of generating sustainable narratives and preserving cultural heritage through poetic prompts. This study proposes “Writing Is Coding ” as a paradigm for sustainability education, exploring how students engage with AI-mediated multimodal creation to address environmental challenges. Using grounded theory methodology with 57 twelfth-grade students from technology-integrated high schools, we analyzed their experiences creating environmental stories and digital cultural artifacts using MidJourney, Kling, and Sora. Data collection involved classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and reflective journals, analyzed through systematic coding procedures (κ = 0.82). Five central themes emerged: writing as algorithmic design for sustainability (89.5%), emotional scaffolding for environmental awareness (78.9%), aesthetics of imperfection in cultural preservation (71.9%), collaborative dynamics in sustainable creativity (84.2%), and pedagogical value of prompt literacy (91.2%). Findings indicate that AI deepens environmental consciousness and reframes writing as a computational process for addressing global issues. This research contributes a theoretical framework integrating expressive writing with algorithmic thinking in AI-assisted sustainability education, aligned with SDGs 4, 11, and 13. Full article

This article explores the often-overlooked question of how literary reading might give rise to experiences that readers themselves identify as spiritual. Framed by William James’s account of “mystical susceptibility” and recent psychological models of spirituality as altered states of consciousness involving shifts in perception, affect, and cognition, the essay asks how engagement with narrative may occasion such states. Drawing from selected examples and critical traditions, it examines the conditions under which reading becomes spiritually resonant. Theologically, the piece considers the formation of attentiveness and imaginative receptivity in writers such as Teresa of Avila and Jessica Hooten Wilson. From affect theory, it engages Rita Felski’s language of enchantment; from cognitive studies, it draws on empirical approaches to literary studies and Tanya Luhrmann’s work on absorption and the cultivation of spiritual perception. By drawing attention to absorption as a psychological and aesthetic phenomenon, this article suggests a renewed interdisciplinary approach—one that connects empirical studies of attention and transformation with older theological and affective insights. In this way, literature may be examined not as a site of doctrinal meaning or subjective feeling alone, but as a form of engagement capable of opening readers to spiritual insight whose impact might be measured through qualitative means. Sustainable Destination Management in Luxury Tourism: Balancing Economic Development and Environmental Responsibility

This study applied the Stimulus–Organism–Response Theory to investigate the impact of sustainable destination management on perceived luxury service quality, taking into account the mediating role of perceived environmental responsibility and the moderating effect of tourist environmental awareness. Data were obtained from 541 tourists in Northern Cyprus, and the analysis was conducted using Herman’s single-factor test in SPSS version 23 and partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS version 4.1.1.2. The study’s results revealed a significant positive influence of sustainable destination management on both perceived luxury service quality and environmental responsibility. Furthermore, the study showed a significant positive relationship between perceived environmental responsibility and perceived luxury service quality. Additionally, tourist environmental consciousness was found to be an important influencing factor in perceived luxury service quality. The mediating role of perceived environmental responsibility was revealed to be a significant partial mediator between sustainable destination management and perceived luxury service quality pathways. Although environmental awareness revealed an insignificant moderating influence on the relationship between sustainable destination management and perceived luxury service quality, it indicated a negative significant moderating influence on the relationship between perceived environmental responsibility and perceived luxury service quality. The study highlights how assessments of luxury services are contingent upon perceived environmental responsibility through sustainable destination activities. Emphasizing both academic and management perspectives, it encourages future research to explore broader psychological and contextual factors. Therefore, it underscores the strategic necessity of sustainability in enhancing the luxury tourism experience. Full article

This essay argues for the reciprocal benefits of joining the new theories of matter emerging out of critical posthumanism and the psychedelic drugs currently experiencing a so-called “renaissance” in global north societies. While the former’s twin emphasis on relationality and embodiment is perfectly suited to capture and ground the ontological, epistemological, and ethical implications of psychedelic experiences of interconnectedness and transformation, these substances are in turn powerful companions through which to enact a “posthuman phenomenology” that helps us with the urgent task to “access, amplify, and describe” our deep imbrication with our more-than-human environments. In other words, I argue that while the “new materialism” emerging out of posthumanism can help elaborate a psychedelic rationality, psychedelics can in turn operate as educators in materiality. It is from this materialist perspective that we can best make sense of psychedelics’ often touted potential for social transformation and the enduring suspicion that they are somehow at odds with the “ontoepistemological order” of modernity. From this point of view, I contend that a crucial critical move is to push against the common trope that this opposition is best expressed as a turn from the narrow scientific and “consumerist materialism” of modern Western societies to more expansive “spiritual” worldviews. Pushing against this science-–spirituality binary, which in fact reproduces modern “indivi/dualism” by confining psychedelic experience inside our heads, I argue instead that what is in fact needed to think through and actualize such potentials is an increased attention to our material transcorporeality. In a nutshell, if we want psychedelics to inform social change, we must be more, not less, materialist—albeit by redefining matter in a rather “weird”, non-reductive way and by redefining consciousness as embodied. By the end of the essay, attaching psychedelics to a new materialism will enable us to formulate a “material spirituality” that establishes psychedelics’ political value less in an idealistic or cognitive “politics of consciousness” and more in a “materialization of critique”. This article analyzes the significance of the ruins and remnants of the Soviet Army in Borne Sulinowo, a former secret Soviet military base in Western Pomerania (Poland), as a source of inspiration for performance artists. This study draws from a variety of theoretical frameworks, including performance art theory, new materialism, and the thing theory. Additionally, it draws from the ideas of Carl Lavery, Richard Gough, Ann Laura Stoler, and Georg Simmel. This text delves into the notion that the transient character of performance art mirrors the fleeting nature of power, particularly in the context of the dissolution of the Soviet regime. Following the Polish reacquisition of the site in the early 1990s, artists such as Władysław Kaźmierczak and Brian Connolly transformed found objects and the decaying environment into performance art. This article analyzes performances such as Kaźmierczak’s кoнец фильма (The End of the Movie) and Connolly’s Frieze Frame. It discusses how these works captured the emotional and intellectual responses to the remnants of military occupation. The performances demonstrate the interplay between decay, memory, and historical consciousness, employing the ruins as a medium for reflecting on the collapse of Soviet influence in Poland and the shifting geopolitical landscape. Consciousness remains one of the most critical yet least understood functions of the brain, not only in humans but also in certain highly organized animal species. In this review, we propose treating consciousness as an emergent, goal-directed informational system organized by the subjective “self” as an active system-forming factor. We present an integrative theoretical–systems framework in which subjectivity functions as system-forming factor of consciousness (SFF) throughout biological evolution. Beginning with proto-conscious invertebrates, we trace progressive elaborations of working and long-term memory, the refinement of behavioral programs, and the emergence of an internal arbiter capable of resolving competing drives. In endothermic vertebrates, subjectivity acquires distinct functional features—sensory filtering, causal reasoning, and adaptive arbitration—underpinned by increasingly complex neural architectures. This evolutionary trajectory culminates in humans, where subjectivity attains its highest level of organization through culturally mediated networks. Although the framework does not assume any specific neural substrate, it provides a testable roadmap linking evolutionary biology, information theory, and quantitative modeling. By clarifying why consciousness arose and how subjectivity shapes complex networks, this perspective also lays the groundwork for exploring possible nonbiological extensions of subjectivity. This philosophical essay reconsiders and redefines the moral attributes, virtues, and duties of an excellent secondary school teacher, emphasizing their pivotal role in the moral development of adolescents during secondary socialization. Grounded in Kantian deontological ethics, it formulates 15 maxims as categorical imperatives to guide morally acceptable teacher behavior, focusing on their function as role models in shaping students’ moral consciousness, as informed by Kohlberg’s theory of moral development. Through a multidisciplinary approach integrating philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, sociology, and anthropology, the essay provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the complexity of the teaching profession. The results offer a foundation for future empirical studies and the development of teacher training programs to enhance educational quality. Full article

This paper seeks to test the explanatory potential of different sociological perspectives in relation to the development of new sport models that reflect the growth of leisure sport participation in urban outdoor places and the decline in traditional practices in associations and clubs. In this regard, this study employs an analytical framework to examine global trends, with a particular focus on the specific context of the municipality of Zaragoza (Spain). With a multi-method approach, a 10-year-period dataset (2009–2019) incorporating sport participation surveys, observational data, and a focus group study is analysed. Three theories are tested: Maffesoli’s neo-tribes; neo-Bourdieuian ideas about urban subcultures; and Elias’s theory of civilizing processes. The results show a congruence between the three theories regarding identity negotiation, commodification, and community sense. However, disparities were found between the three theories, with one or more of them exhibiting an absence of class consciousness that supports subcultural interpretation and distinct notions of change versus continuity of the analyzed phenomena. This paper concludes that recent sports participation trends are best explained with reference to the quest of excitement and using healthism as a dominant ideology or social imperative. Full article
