With coal mines’ mining depth increasing, the stress environment in deep mining (including key factors such as high ground stress, strong disturbance, and complex geological structures, as well as stress redistribution after deformation of surrounding roadway rock) is complex, which leads to increasingly prominent deformation and failure problems for goaf-side roadways in thick coal seams. Surrounding rock deformation is difficult to control, and mine pressure behavior is violent, making traditional support technologies no longer able to meet the mining safety requirements of roadways in deep thick coal seams. Taking the 6311 working face of Tangkou Coal Mine as the engineering research background, this paper systematically summarizes the deformation and failure characteristics of goaf-side roadways in deep thick coal seams through field monitoring, borehole peeping, and other means, and conducts in-depth analysis of their failure mechanisms and influencing factors. Aiming at these problems, a synergistic support–unloading control method for goaf-side roadways is proposed, which integrates roof blasting pressure relief, coal pillar grouting reinforcement, and constant-resistance energy-absorbing anchor cable support. The effects of the unsupported scheme, original support scheme, and synergistic support–unloading control scheme are compared and analyzed through FLAC3D numerical simulation. Further verification through field application shows that it has remarkable effects in controlling roadway convergence deformation, roof separation, and bolt (cable) stress. Specifically, compared with the original support schemes, the horizontal displacement on the coal pillar side is reduced by 89.5% compared with the original support scheme, and the horizontal displacement on the solid coal side is reduced by 79.3%; the vertical displacement on the coal pillar side is reduced by 45.8% and the vertical displacement on the solid coal side is reduced by 42.4%. Compared with the original support scheme, the maximum deformation of the roadway’s solid coal rib, roof, and coal pillar rib is reduced by 76%, 83%, and 88%, respectively, while the separation between the shallow and deep roof remains at a low level. The coal stress continues fluctuating stably during the monitoring period; the force on the bolts (cables) does not exceed the designed anchoring force, with sufficient bearing reserve space (47% remaining), and no breakage occurs, which fully proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the synergistic support–unloading control technology scheme. This technology realizes the effective control of on-site roadways and provides technical reference for the support engineering of coal mine goaf-side roadways under similar conditions. Full article

Background: The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing worldwide, while the incidence is tending to stabilize. Moreover, the use of biological treatments is increasing; some studies suggest that surgeries and hospitalizations are decreasing instead. Methods: A population-based, retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Catalan Health Surveillance System (CHSS). All patients diagnosed with IBD were included between 2017 and 2023. Crude incidence and prevalence rates were calculated for the Catalan population. Data on pharmacological therapy, surgical procedures, hospitalizations, and mortality were analyzed. Trends in age-sex-adjusted rates were also estimated, and logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted mortality odds ratio (OR). Data for Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) were analyzed separately. Results: The number of prevalent IBD cases rose from 28,752 in 2017 to 41,423 in 2023. Despite incidence rates remaining stable (30.8 in 2017 and 29.9 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023), prevalence rates increased (386.9 and 510.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively). The use of biologics significantly increased (from 13.5% in 2017 to 21.0% in 2023), particularly ustekinumab and vedolizumab. In parallel, a decline in the use of immunosuppressants was observed. IBD-related surgeries and hospitalizations decreased during the study period, particularly among CD patients. Mortality remained low but was higher among IBD patients compared to the general population. Conclusions: The incidence of IBD in Catalonia has stabilized, while its prevalence continues rising, suggesting a transition to Stage 3 (compounding prevalence). The use of biological treatments is increasing steadily, whereas rates of surgeries and hospitalizations are consistently decreasing. Full article

Calls for an “archaeology of climate change” highlight the interest in integrating human land use histories with the paleoenvironmental record. Shifts in land use patterns, observed via regional archaeological surveys, have been used in studies exploring the relationships between human and environmental systems, often via the Adaptive Cycle (AC). Recent work has combined datasets from separate surveys to examine macroregional patterns, which can then be integrated with environmental proxy data. However, efforts at aggregating archaeological data are often problematized due to projects’ differing collection methods and periodizations. This study ascribes the formal constructs of the AC to survey data to minimize data aggregation issues and maintain local integrity. Aoristic sum functions were performed individually on data from four projects in the northeastern Peloponnese to identify local patterns. These data were then aggregated, allowing for changes in land use to be observed at the macro and regional levels. Further measurements relating to land use abandonment, continuity, expansion, and potential serve as proxy data to identify the AC constructs of organization, exploitation, conservation, and release. The approach allows for cross-comparative regional analysis and the creation of an aggregated dataset that describes macroregional trends, essential to integrating human and paleoenvironmental narratives over time. Food-borne botulism is a rare but serious disease caused by ingestion of botulinum neurotoxin pre-formed in food by Clostridium botulinum. Between 2006 and 2009, no foodborne botulism cases were reported in the UK. However, the period from 2010 to 2024 saw 13 cases, encompassing seven separate incidents and two outbreaks, with no reported fatalities. Cases were predominantly linked to imported, home-made, and artisanal foods, occasionally to commercial products. Diagnostic and public health challenges include delayed clinical diagnosis, delayed sample collection, inadequate specimen volumes, and the frequent unavailability of suspected food sources, hampering epidemiological investigations. The UK has an extremely low incidence of foodborne botulism with an estimated rate of 0.001 cases per 100,000 people per year, but despite this low occurrence, food botulism remains a public health emergency as it requires timely treatment and rapid reactive intervention to be undertaken by multiple regulatory agencies. Continuous professional training of medical staff, up-to-date clinical guidance, rapid diagnostic, and food investigations are essential for optimising patient outcomes and prevention. Full article

The development of efficient and sustainable water recycling systems is essential for long-term human missions and the establishment of space habitats on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Humidity condensate (HC) is a low-strength wastewater that is currently recycled on the International Space Station (ISS). The main contaminants in HC are primarily low-molecular-weight organics and ammonia. This has caused operational issues due to microbial growth in the Water Process Assembly (WPA) storage tank as well as failure of downstream systems. In addition, treatment of this wastewater primarily uses adsorptive and exchange media, which must be continually resupplied and represent a significant life-cycle cost. This study demonstrates the integration of a membrane-aerated biological reactor (MABR) for pretreatment and storage of HC, followed by brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO). Two system configurations were tested: (1) periodic MABR fluid was sent to batch RO operating at 90% water recovery with the RO concentrate sent to a separate waste tank; and (2) periodic MABR fluid was sent to batch RO operating at 90% recovery with the RO concentrate returned to the MABR (accumulating salinity in the MABR). With an external recycle tank (configuration 2), the system produced 2160 L (i.e., 1080 crew-days) of near potable water (dissolved organic carbon (DOC) < 10 mg/L, total nitrogen (TN) < 12 mg/L, total dissolved solids (TDS) < 30 mg/L) with a single membrane (weight of 260 g). When the MABR was used as the RO recycle tank (configuration 1), 1100 L of permeate could be produced on a single membrane; RO permeate quality was slightly better but generally similar to the first configuration even though no brine was wasted during the run. The results suggest that this hybrid system has the potential to significantly enhance the self-sufficiency of space habitats, supporting sustainable extraterrestrial human habitation, as well as reducing current operational problems on the ISS. These systems may also apply to extreme locations such as remote/isolated terrestrial locations, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Postprandial hyperglycemia is a risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, even in healthy individuals. Kanzaki mulberry leaf and water chestnut tea (MW tea), a blend of mulberry (Morus alba) leaves and water chestnut (Trapa japonica) leaves and husks, is rich in polyphenols and 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) and may suppress postprandial glucose spikes, but evidence regarding its short-term daily intake is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the postprandial glycemic response and safety of two-week MW tea consumption using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Methods: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-period crossover trial involving 31 participants. Each intervention period lasted two weeks, separated by a one-week washout. Participants consumed either MW tea or a placebo before meals. Interstitial glucose levels were measured every 15 min using CGM. Postprandial glucose responses were recorded every 15 min for 180 min after a standardized meal on the first day of each period. The primary outcome was the coefficient of variation (CV) in glucose levels, calculated using data from the central 10 days of each intervention period. Safety was assessed using CGM-derived hypoglycemia metrics and blood test results. Results: The CV of glucose levels during the MW tea period was significantly lower than during the placebo period (mean difference: 0.02, p = 0.0006). A significant reduction in 1 h postprandial glucose area under the curve was also observed. No significant differences were found in hypoglycemia occurrence, liver/renal/inflammatory markers, or self-reported adverse symptoms. Notably, 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) levels significantly increased during MW tea intake, suggesting improved glycemic control. Conclusions: Short-term consumption of Kanzaki MW tea effectively suppressed postprandial glucose variability without safety concerns. These findings support MW tea as a promising natural supplement for glycemic management and the prevention of diabetes. Full article

Formaldehyde vapor (HCHO) is a harmful chemical substance and a potential air contaminant, with a permissible level in indoor spaces below 0.08 ppm (80 ppb). Thus, highly sensitive gas sensors for the continuous monitoring of HCHO are in demand. The electrical conductivity of semiconducting nanomaterials (e.g., single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)) makes them sensitive to chemical substances adsorbed on their surfaces, and a variety of portable and highly sensitive chemiresistive gas sensors, including those capable of detecting HCHO, have been developed. However, when monitoring low levels of vapors (<1 ppm) found in ambient air, most chemiresistive sensors face practical issues, including false responses to interfering effects (e.g., fluctuations in room temperature and humidity), baseline drift, and the need to apply a purge gas. Here, we report an actuator-driven, purge-free chemiresistive gas sensor that is capable of reliably detecting 0.05 ppm of HCHO in the air. This sensor is composed of an HCHO→HCl converter (powdery hydroxylamine salt, HA), an HCl detector (a SWCNT-based chemiresistor), and an HCl blocker (a thin plastic plate). Upon exposure to HCHO, the HA emits HCl vapor, which diffuses onto the adjacent SWCNTs, increasing their electrical conductivity through p-doping. Meanwhile, inserting a plastic plate between HA and SWCNTs makes the conductivity of SWCNTs insensitive to HCHO. Thus, via periodic actuation (insertion and removal) of the plastic plate, HCHO can be detected reliably over a wide concentration range (0.05–15 ppm) with excellent selectivity over other volatile organic compounds. This actuator-driven system is beneficial because it does not require a purge gas for sensor recovery or baseline correction. Moreover, since the response to HCHO is synchronized with the actuation timing of the plate, even small (~0.8%) responses to 0.05 ppm of HCHO can be clearly separated from larger noise responses (>1%) caused by interfering effects and baseline drift. We believe that this work provides substantial insights into the practical implementation of nanomaterial-based chemiresistive gas sensors. Full article

The “hand-waving sacrifice” is a large-scale sacrificial ceremony with more than 2000 years of history. It was passed down from ancient times by the Tujia ethnic group living in the Wuling Corridor of China, and it integrates religion, sacrifice, dance, drama, and other cultural forms. It primarily consists of two parts: ritual content (inviting gods, offering sacrifices to gods, dancing a hand-waving dance, etc.) and the architectural space that hosts the ritual (hand-waving hall), which together constitute Tujia’s most sacred ritual space and the most representative art and culture symbol. Nonetheless, in existing studies, the hand-waving sacrifice ritual, hand-waving hall architectural space, and hand-waving dance art are often separated as independent research objects, and little attention is paid to the coupling mechanism of the mutual construction of space and ritual in the process of historical development. Moreover, with the acceleration of modernization, the current survival context of the hand-waving sacrifice has undergone drastic changes. On the one hand, the intangible cultural heritage protection policy and the wave of tourism development have pushed it into the public eye and the cultural consumption system. On the other hand, the changes in the social structure of traditional villages have led to the dissolution of the sacredness of ritual space. Therefore, using the interaction of “space-ritual” as a prompt, this research first uses GIS technology to visualize the spatial geographical distribution characteristics and diachronic evolution process of hand-waving halls in six historical periods and then specifically analyzes the sacred construction of hand-waving hall architecture for the hand-waving sacrifice ritual space throughout history, as well as the changing mechanism of the continuous secularization of the hand-waving sacrifice space in contemporary society. Overall, this study reveals a unique path for non-literate ethnic groups to achieve the intergenerational transmission of cultural memory through the collusion of material symbols and physical art practices, as well as the possibility of embedding the hand-waving sacrifice ritual into contemporary spatial practice through symbolic translation and functional extension in the context of social function inheritance and variation. Finally, this study has specific inspirational and reference value for exploring how the traditional culture and art of ethnic minorities can maintain resilience against the tide of modernization. Background: Gastrointestinal cancer imposes a heavy public health burden worldwide. The six major subtypes of GI cancer cases accounted for over a quarter of the total cancer cases in China. We examined and predicted the amount and trend of the burden of gastrointestinal cancer in China. Methods: We collected the crude incidence rate (CIR), age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), crude DALY rate, age-standardized DALY rate, crude death rate (CDR), and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) by gender, age, and risk factors from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 database, covering the period from 1990 to 2021. We used an age–period–cohort (APC) model to calculate the age, period, and cohort effects separately and a Bayesian APC model to predict the epidemiological trends and the age-specific incidence. Results: In 2021, 1,957,948 incidence cases of gastrointestinal cancers were estimated in China, with an incidence rate of 137.62 per 100,000. The burden was notably higher for males, with tobacco use accounting for 26.48% of male GI cancer DALYs versus dietary risks (13.22%) being predominant in females. Metabolic risk factors showed concerning growth trends, with high fasting plasma glucose increasing by 166.06% in males and 275.72% in females. The age–period–cohort analysis revealed peak incidence at advanced ages (>80 years) for most GI cancers. By 2050, China’s gastrointestinal cancer burden is projected to increase substantially, with total cases reaching 2.92 (95% CI: 2.27, 3.77) million (49.06% increase) and crude incidence rate rising to 230.51 (95% CI: 178.98, 298.03) per 100,000 (a 67.49% increase), predominantly driven by colorectal cancer (41.74%) and stomach cancer (21.47%). While crude incidence rates show consistent increases across all GI cancers, particularly in males, age-standardized incidence rates are predicted to decrease for most cancer types except for male colorectal and biliary tract cancers. Conclusions: The burden of gastrointestinal cancer in China is growing rapidly and will continue to increase. The performance of ASIR indicated that population aging is a potential driver of the increasing burden. Cancer control policies should focus on older people. It is critical to distinguish prevention strategies by gender and age according to the major risk factors. Full article

Although the effect of coach turnover is often discussed within the football community, there is a very limited body of knowledge on this topic. This study aimed to explore which coaching turnovers are associated with changes in injury incidence in an elite professional football club. A longitudinal study observed injury occurrence across the eight-season period, with the team experiencing 16 coaching changes, averaging 2 per season. All injuries were continuously monitored regularly recorded and saved in the club’s database. They were analyzed over three-time frames: for each season, 2 weeks after the coach was sacked, and also for 4 weeks after the coaching change. A paired sample t-test was used separately for the overall injuries and specifically for muscle injuries in the observed time frames. Overall injuries had an increase of 27.7% and 35.4% in the two and four weeks after coaching turnovers, respectively, while for muscle injuries, these rates were lower and amounted to 5.5% and 8.1%. There were no statistically significant changes, but a medium effect size was reported when comparing overall injuries in 4 weeks and the season in general. Muscle injuries appear to be less negatively affected by coaching changes. Currently, deep learning networks based on architectures such as CNN and Transformer have achieved significant advances in remote sensing image change detection, effectively addressing the issue of false changes due to spectral and radiometric discrepancies. However, when handling remote sensing image data from multiple sensors, different viewing angles, and extended periods, these models show limitations in modelling dynamic interactions and feature representations in change regions, restricting their ability to model the integrity and precision of irregular change areas. We propose the Context-Aware Global-Local Subspace Attention Change Detection Network (CGLCS-Net) to resolve these issues and introduce the Global-Local Context-Aware Selector (GLCAS) and the Subspace-based Self-Attention Fusion (SSAF) module. GLCAS dynamically selects receptive fields at different feature extraction stages through a joint pooling attention mechanism and depthwise separable convolution, enhancing global context and local feature extraction capabilities and improving feature representation for multi-scale and irregular change regions. The SSAF module establishes dynamic interactions between dual-temporal features via feature decomposition and self-attention mechanisms, focusing on semantic change areas to address challenges such as sensor viewpoint variations and the texture and spectral inconsistencies caused by long periods. Compared to ChangeFormer, CGLCS-Net achieved improvements in the IoU metric of 0.95%, 9.23%, and 13.16% on the three public datasets, i.e., LEVIR-CD, SYSU-CD, and S2Looking, respectively. Additionally, it reduced model parameters by 70.05%, floating-point operations by 7.5%, and inference time by 11.5%. These improvements enhance its applicability for continuous land use and land cover change monitoring. Full article

(1) Background: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) implemented in physical education classes on adolescents’ motivation for exercise. (2) Methods: This study involved 60 male adolescents (16.23 ± 0.6 years) recruited from a local high school who were randomly assigned to either the HIIT group or the control group (CG). The Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI-2) questionnaire was used to assess how participation in a HIIT program influenced the motivation to exercise among adolescents. The experimental program consisted of a 12-week HIIT program, integrated into the preparatory part of physical education classes. Sessions were held twice weekly, with each session lasting ~10 min. The HIIT group performed the Tabata protocol, which consisted of two 4 min sequences of eight different high-intensity exercises (burpees, split jumps, jumping jacks, push-ups, wall ball, crunches, frog jumps, and Russian twists), each lasting 20 s with 10 s rest intervals, separated by a 1 min recovery period. The control group conducted the traditional moderate-intensity warm-up exercises for the same total duration. After the warm-up protocols, both groups continued with the same physical education classes, which included a variety of instructional and moderate-intensity activities. (3) Results: A significant time × group interaction was observed for social recognition (p = 0.04; partial eta squared η2p = 0.079, medium effect), indicating that HIIT had a superior effect compared to CG. Affiliation also showed a significant improvement in the HIIT group (p = 0.02), while no significant changes were noted in the CG (p = 0.35). Similarly, competition significantly increased in the HIIT group (p = 0.02), whereas no significant differences were found in the CG (p = 0.74). For all other motivational factors, no significant effects of time or group factors were found (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: This study highlights the positive effects of school-based HIIT on male adolescents’ motivation, particularly in the area of social recognition. Full article

This study numerically explores the dynamics of the photogravitational circular restricted three-body problem, where an infinitesimal particle moves under the gravitational influence of two primary bodies connected by a massless rod. These primary masses revolve in circular orbits around their common center of mass, which remains fixed at the origin of the coordinate system. The distance between the two masses remains constant, independent of their rotation period. The third body, being infinitesimally small compared to the primary masses, has a negligible effect on their motion. The primary mass is considered as a radiating body, while the secondary is modeled as an elongated one comprising two hypothetical point masses separated by a fixed distance. The analysis focuses on determining the number, location, and stability of equilibrium points, as well as examining the structure of zero-velocity curves under the influence of system parameters such as mass and force ratio, radiation pressure and geometric configuration of the secondary body. The system is found to allow up to six equilibria: four collinear and two non-collinear. Their number and positions are significantly affected by variations in the system’s parameters. Stability analysis reveals that the two non-collinear equilibrium points can exhibit stability under specific parameter configurations, while the four collinear points are typically unstable. An exception is the innermost collinear equilibrium point, which can be stable for certain parameter values. Our numerical investigation on periodic orbits around the collinear equilibrium points of the asteroid triple-system 2001SN263 show that a variation, either to the values of radiation or the force ratio parameters, influence their special characteristics such as period and stability. Also, their continuation in the space of initial conditions shows that all families terminate naturally at collision orbits with either the primary or the secondary. Full article

Background/Objectives: The demographic change raises concerns about the provision of adequate, long-term healthcare. Our study was driven by the decision to test other studies’ findings about how patients’ age and comorbidities are significantly increasing in German intensive care units (ICUs) over time. The goal of this study was to analyze the age and age-related characteristics, e.g., comorbidities and frailty, in ICU populations from 86 hospitals in the German Helios Group over a period of 6 years. Methods: For this retrospective observational study, we derived two different definitions of ICU cases, with (i) CodeBased ICU cases being defined by typical ICU procedures (e.g., OPS 8-980, 8-98f and/or duration of ventilation > 0 h) derived from the German administrative dataset of claims data according to the German Hospital Remuneration Act and (ii) BedBased ICU cases being based on the actual presence of a patient on a designated ICU bed; this was taken from the Helios hospital bed classification system. For each ICU definition, the size of the respective ICU population, age, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI) and Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFR) were analyzed. Further patient characteristics, treatments and outcomes are reported. Trends in cases with and without COVID-19 were analyzed separately. Results: We analyzed a total of 6,204,093 hospital cases, of which 281,537 met the criteria for the CodeBased ICU definition and 457,717 for the BedBased ICU definition. A key finding of our study is that a change in age in absolute and relative terms is observable and statistically significant: the mean age of CodeBased ICU cases, 68.7 (14.4/−0.06), is marginally decreasing, and that of BedBased ICU cases, 69.1 (15.9/0.07) (both with a p-value of <0.001), is marginally increasing. Age analysis excluding COVID-19 cases does not change this key finding. A longitudinal analysis shows a continuously decreasing number of ICU admissions and a marginally positive trend of patients who are 60–69 and ≥80 years old: CodeBased ICU, 1.04/1.02; BedBased ICU, 1.03/1.03, all with a p-value of <0.001. A severity analysis based on the ECI and HFS shows that both are higher in CodeBased ICU cases (2021 ECI:18.0 (12.9); HFS: 10.7 (7.3); both p-values < 0.001) than in BedBased ICU cases (2021 ECI: 12.3 (12.4); HFS: 7.4 (7.1); p-values of 0.3 and 0.12). Further testing results per definition are reported. Conclusions: The observed age-related trends suggest that there has been a further increase in demand for intensive care from a frailer population. We recommend further studies to critically evaluate the increasing frailty within the ICU population and to test the associated presumed need for increased ICU capacities. Full article

Climate during the Late Cretaceous is characterized by a long-term cooling trend interrupted by several periods of increased warming. This study focuses on the terrestrial response to two rapid climate events just prior to the K-Pg boundary marked by the Chicxulub impact: the Mid-Maastrichtian Event (MME) and the Late Maastrichtian Warming Event (LMWE). These hyperthermals caused widespread biotic and greenhouse gas-related disturbances, and clarification about their timing and environmental character reveals the independent nature of all three events. Using element concentrations in bulk paleosols, as well as element concentrations in pedogenic calcite from paleosols in the Tornillo Basin of West Texas, we reconstruct mean annual precipitation (MAP) and the character of soil weathering across the K-Pg boundary. Modelled MAP indicates increased precipitation during the first half of the MME and rapid high amplitude changes in precipitation during the second half of the MME. The Tornillo Basin became increasingly dry during the LMWE followed by wet conditions that continued across the K-Pg boundary. This study documents the co-occurrence of sedimentation patterns, sea level change, and climate change caused by separate tectonic events prior to the K-Pg boundary. Full article
