Background: This study aimed to investigate how barbell type (elastic vs. inelastic) and lifting speed affect postural stability and lower limb muscle activation during the single-leg deadlift (SLDL), a common unilateral exercise in rehabilitation and performance training. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy adults performed SLDLs using both elastic and inelastic barbells under three lifting speeds (normal, fast, and power). Center of pressure (COP) displacement in the anterior–posterior (AP) and medial–lateral (ML) directions and electromyographic (EMG) activity of eight lower limb muscles were measured. Results: COP displacement was significantly lower when using elastic barbells (AP: F = 6.509, p = 0.017, η2 = 0.200, ω2 = 0.164; ML: F = 9.996, p = 0.004, η2 = 0.278, ω2 = 0.243). EMG activation was significantly higher for the gluteus medius, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and gastrocnemius (all p < 0.01), especially under power conditions. Significant interactions between barbell type and speed were found for the gluteus medius (F = 13.737, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.346, ω2 = 0.176), semitendinosus (F = 6.757, p = 0.002, η2 = 0.206, ω2 = 0.080), and tibialis anterior (F = 3.617, p = 0.034, η2 = 0.122, ω2 = 0.029). Conclusions: The findings suggest that elastic barbells improve postural control and enhance neuromuscular activation during the SLDL, particularly at higher speeds. These results support the integration of elastic resistance in dynamic balance and injury prevention programs. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of inertial flywheel training and accentuated eccentric loading training on the neuromuscular performance of well-trained male college sprinters. Fourteen sprinters were recruited and randomly assigned to either the flywheel training (FWT, n = 7) group or the accentuated eccentric loading training (AELT, n = 7) group. The FWT group completed four sets of 2 + 7 repetitions of flywheel squats, whereas the AELT group performed four sets of seven repetitions of barbell squats (concentric/eccentric: 80%/120% 1RM). Both groups underwent an eight-week squat training program, with two sessions per week. A two-way repeated ANOVA analysis was used to find differences between the two groups and between the two testing times (pre-test vs. post-test). The results indicated significant improvements in all measured variables for the FWT group: 1RM (5.0%, ES = 1.28), CMJ (13.3%, ES = 5.42), SJ (6.0%, ES = 2.94), EUR (6.5%, ES = 4.42), SLJ (2.9%, ES = 1.77), and 30 m sprint (−3.4%, ES = −2.80); and for the AELT group: 1RM (6.3%, ES = 2.53), CMJ (7.4%, ES = 3.44), SJ (6.4%, ES = 2.21), SLJ (2.2%, ES = 1.20), and 30 m sprint (−3.0%, ES = −1.84), with the exception of EUR (0.9%, ES = 0.63, p = 0.134), showing no significant difference. In addition, no significant interaction effects between group and time were observed for 1RM back squat, SJ, SLJ, and 30 m sprint (p > 0.05). Conversely, a significant interaction effect between group and time was observed for both CMJ and EUR (p < 0.001); post hoc analysis revealed that the improvements in CMJ and EUR were significantly greater in the FWT group compared to the AELT group (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that both FWT and AELT are effective at enhancing lower-body strength, power, and speed in well-trained male college sprinters, with FWT being particularly more effective in promoting elastic energy storage and the full utilization of the stretch–shortening cycle. Prior research has suggested that resistance exercise may result in a temporary decrease in vascular function, as measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), among untrained young individuals. However, the immediate impact of combined elastic and weight resistance training on older adults remains insufficiently explored. We assessed vascular function before, after, and 30 min after acute exercise under three resistance conditions to evaluate whether a combination of weight and elastic resistance exercises has an acute effect on vascular function in older adults. Fourteen older adults (65.6 ± 2.9 years) executed three sets of 12 repetitions at 65% of one repetition maximum (1 RM) of the bench press (BP) exercise. Testing was performed on three separate days as follows: (1) barbell alone (BA); (2) barbell plus elastic bands (10% of 65% 1 RM) (BE10); and (3) barbell plus elastic bands (20% of 65% 1 RM) (BE20). A two-way (time × condition) repeated measures analysis of variance was employed to assess the time and condition effects on flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and pulse wave velocity (PWV). At 0 min post-exercise, FMD was significantly higher during BE10 than during BA (p < 0.05); however, at 30 min post-exercise, no significant difference (p ≥ 0.05) was observed between the three conditions. In each condition, FMD results did not differ significantly at different times (p ≥ 0.05). For FMD, the main effect of the condition (F[2,26] = 3.86, p = 0.034) and that of the time and condition (F[4,52] = 3.66, p = 0.011) were significant. For PWV, only the difference between the BA and BE10 conditions was significant at 0 min (p < 0.05). PWV increased from baseline in the BA condition (p < 0.05) but not significantly in the BE10 and BE20 conditions (p ≥ 0.05). Therefore, BA, BE10, and BE20 demonstrated various changes in vascular function. Long-term training intervention studies are needed to validate these findings. Full article

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an augmented eccentric load upon the kinematics and muscle activation of bench press, and to investigate possible mechanisms behind augmented eccentric loading during the lift. Sixteen resistance-trained males (age 28.5 ± 7.7 years, height 1.78 ± 0.08 m, body mass 80.7 ± 14.3 kg) performed three repetitions at 95/85% of 1RM (augmented eccentric loading), and 85/85% of 1RM (control) in bench press, while barbell kinematics and muscle activation of eight muscles were measured. The main findings were that no kinematic differences between the augmented and control condition were found, only an effect of repetition. Furthermore, augmented loading caused a higher activation of the biceps brachii during the pre-sticking and sticking region, while a lower activation in the sternal part of pectoralis major during the eccentric phase was observed. Based on the present findings, it can be concluded that augmented eccentric loading with 95% of 1RM in bench press did not have any acute positive effect upon the concentric phase of the lift (85% of 1RM) and that the proposed underlying mechanisms like potentiation, increased neural stimulation and preload, and recovery of stored elastic energy does not seem to occur with these loads. The aim of this study was to investigate whether accommodating elastic bands with barbell back squats (BSQ) increase muscular force during the deceleration subphase. Ten healthy men (mean ± standard deviation: Age: 23 ± 2 years; height: 170.5 ± 3.7 cm; mass: 66.7 ± 5.4 kg; and BSQ one repetition maximum (RM): 105 ± 23.1 kg; BSQ 1RM/body mass: 1.6 ± 0.3) were recruited for this study. The subjects performed band-resisted parallel BSQ (accommodating elastic bands each sides of barbell) with five band conditions in random order. The duration of the deceleration subphase, mean mechanical power, and the force and velocity during the acceleration and deceleration subphases were calculated. BSQ with elastic bands elicited greater mechanical power output, velocity, and force during the deceleration subphase, in contrast to that elicited with traditional free weight (p < 0.05). BSQ with elastic bands also elicited greater mechanical power output and velocity during the acceleration subphase. However, the force output during the acceleration subphase using an elastic band was lesser than that using a traditional free weight (p < 0.05). This study suggests that BSQ with elastic band elicit greater power output during the acceleration and deceleration subphases. Full article
