Background: This pilot study aimed to investigate the experiences of participating in a brief walking football intervention among rural older adults and explore the functional health outcomes of participation. Methods: This multi-methods study saw 13 older adults (7 males/6 females, 63.2 ± 9.4 years) complete 1-h of walking football per week for six weeks. Pre- and post-intervention, participants underwent assessments of body composition, as well as functional assessments using the Senior Fitness Testing Battery. On completion of the walking football intervention, all participants joined in a semi-structured focus group interview to explore their experiences of participation. Results: Thematic analysis of focus group data identified three themes that captured participant’s experiences, including: (1) “Opportunity to jump back in with what we can physically do”, (2) Social connection and feeling “part of something bigger”, and (3) “It’s how our brain is engaged”. Trivial changes were observed in assessments of body composition (0.07–0.08) and flexibility (0.02–0.19). Furthermore, small-to-large magnitude changes were observed for several functional health outcomes suggestive of improved walking capacity (0.72–1.6), agility (−0.9) and upper and lower body muscular strength (0.49). Conclusions: Rural older adults reported experiencing perceived health and well-being improvements from participation in a brief walking football intervention, with functional health benefits also evident; however, further suitably powered evidence is highly warranted. Background: We examined changes in hematological, biochemical, and hormonal biomarkers, along with endurance and explosive performance indices, in amateur soccer players over a 4-week preseason period. Methods: Thirteen players (age: 19.7 ± 2.0 years; body mass: 73.0 ± 6.8 kg; height: 180 ± 0.1 cm; body fat: 8.6 ± 3.5%) were monitored during a 4-week preseason program, which included 21 training days, three friendly matches, and four days of rest. Before and after this period, endurance capacity was evaluated using the Yo-Yo IR1 test, and leg power was assessed using the CMJ. Blood samples were collected for three consecutive days in week 1 and after week 4 to assess hematological and biochemical parameters. Internal load during all weeks was assessed with session RPE (sRPE). Results: There was a 25.5% increase in Yo-Yo IR1 distance (2123 ± 413 vs. 1560 ± 356 m, p = 0.002), with the estimated VO2max and the speed associated with VO2max (vVO2max) improving by 8.7% (49.5 ± 3.0 to 54.2 ± 3.5 mL/kg/min, p = 0.002) and 5.3% (16.0 ± 0.7 to 16.9 ± 0.6 km/h, p = 0.002), respectively. In contrast, CMJ performance in weeks 2–4 declined by 13.4–21.0% relative to baseline, while sRPE peaked during week 3 (4011 ± 440 AU). Hematological variables were mostly stable except for small increases in MCV and MCH (1.5–1.8%, p < 0.001), while there were significant reductions in urea (12%), uric acid (6.2%), and erythropoietin (33%). Conclusions: A 4-week preseason program substantially improved aerobic capacity yet compromised leg power. Changes in biomarker profiles suggest that the training load maintained an appropriate balance between overload and recovery. These findings provide valuable guidance for coaches seeking to optimize training protocols while minimizing the risk of overtraining and preventing injuries during the competitive season. This paper examines the integration of machine learning (ML) techniques in professional football, focusing on two key areas: (i) player and team performance, and (ii) match outcome prediction. Using a systematic methodology, this study reviews 172 papers from a five-year observation period (2019–2024) to identify relevant applications, focusing on the analysis of game actions (free kicks, passes, and penalties), individual and collective performance, and player position. A predominance of supervised learning, deep learning, and hybrid models (which integrate several ML techniques) is observed in the ML categories. Among the most widely used algorithms are decision trees, extreme gradient boosting, and artificial neural networks, which focus on optimizing sports performance and predicting outcomes. This paper discusses challenges such as the limited availability of public datasets due to access and cost restrictions, the restricted use of advanced visualization tools, and the poor integration of data acquisition devices, such as sensors. However, it also highlights the role of ML in addressing these challenges, thereby representing future research opportunities. Furthermore, this paper includes two illustrative case studies: (i) predicting the date Cristiano Ronaldo will reach 1000 goals, and (ii) an example of predicting penalty shoots; these examples demonstrate the practical potential of ML for performance monitoring and tactical decision-making in real-world football environments. Transfers in professional football (soccer) are risky investments because of the large transfer fees and high risks involved. Although data-driven models can be used to improve transfer decisions, existing models focus on describing players’ historical progress, leaving their future performance unknown. Moreover, recent developments have called for the use of explainable models combined with methods for uncertainty quantification of predictions to improve applicability for practitioners. This paper assesses explainable machine learning models in a practitioner-oriented way for the prediction of the future development in quality and transfer value of professional football players. To this end, the methods for uncertainty quantification are studied through the literature. The predictive accuracy is studied by training the models to predict the quality and value of players one year ahead, equivalent to one season. This is carried out by training them on two data sets containing data-driven indicators describing the player quality and player value in historical settings. In this paper, the random forest model is found to be the most suitable model because it provides accurate predictions as well as an uncertainty quantification method that naturally arises from the bagging procedure of the random forest model. Additionally, this research shows that the development of player performance contains nonlinear patterns and interactions between variables, and that time series information can provide useful information for the modeling of player performance metrics. The resulting models can help football clubs make more informed, data-driven transfer decisions by forecasting player quality and transfer value. Full article

Background/Objectives: Maintaining proper posture and preventing musculoskeletal pain are essential for the healthy development of young football players. Contemporary concepts of postural control emphasize the importance of the lumbopelvic-hip complex and the activation of deep trunk muscles. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a structured core stabilization training program on postural parameters and pain reduction in young football players. Methods: A total of 182 male football players, aged 9–15 years, were enrolled and allocated to either the intervention or control group. The 12-week intervention consisted of exercises targeting both local and global trunk stabilizers. Assessments included measurements of spinal curvatures, trunk rotation angles, lower limb loading symmetry, and postural stability using the TMX-127 digital inclinometer (Saunders Group Inc., Chaska, MN, USA) and the Baseline scoliometer (Fabrication Enterprises, Inc. New York, USA). Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Repeated-measures statistical analyses were performed with a significance level set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: The intervention group showed significant improvements in trunk rotational parameters, with reductions in ATR values at C7/Th1 (−0.54°) and L5/S1 (−0.49°). SATR values decreased by −0.28° between the second and third assessments. Symmetry of lower limb loading under eyes-open conditions improved significantly (p < 0.00195). No significant changes were observed in dynamic balance, as assessed by the Y-Balance Test (p > 0.05). Pain intensity decreased from 3.33 to 2.55 on the VAS, reflecting a reduction of 0.78 points. Conclusions: Systematic core stabilization training enhances postural quality and reduces the occurrence and severity of musculoskeletal pain in young football players, with lasting effects—except for postural control under conditions of reduced visual input. This type of training represents an effective physioprophylactic strategy, supporting postural control and lowering the risk of injuries. To maintain these benefits, continued training that incorporates balance and proprioceptive exercises is recommended. Full article

This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the FIFA 11+ injury prevention programme, a neuromuscular training intervention involving muscular strength, proprioception, balance, and plyometric exercises, in reducing ankle injury incidence among football players. Included are randomised controlled trials (RCTs) involving players of any age, sex, or competition level, comparing the FIFA 11+ programme with standard warm-up routines. Studies were eligible if they had a minimum follow-up of five months and reported at least two of the following: number of ankle injuries, incidence rate, and exposure hours. Searches were conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE (via OVID), Scopus, and SPORTDiscus up to October 2024. Risk of bias was assessed using the revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2), and a random-effects meta-analysis was conducted. Three RCTs, involving 3833 participants and 286,827 exposure hours, met the inclusion criteria. The pooled analysis showed that the FIFA 11+ programme significantly reduced ankle injury rates compared to control groups (rate ratio (RR) = 0.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.46–0.96, p = 0.03, I2 = 52%), reflecting a 33% lower risk. The certainty of the evidence was rated as moderate due to bias in two studies. In conclusion, the FIFA 11+ programme significantly reduces ankle injury incidence and supports implementation at all levels. However, further research is needed to examine long-term effects, optimal doses, and applicability across diverse football populations. Full article

Objective: This study systematically examined the effects of recreational football on body composition and cardiometabolic health in overweight or obese individuals via subgroup analyses of potential moderators. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang Data) in May and July 2025 to identify controlled trials evaluating recreational football among overweight or obese individuals. A meta-analysis was performed to pool the effect estimates, reported as standardized mean differences (SMDs), with heterogeneity explored through subgroup analyses. Results: Recreational football interventions across 32 studies (1126 participants, aged 11–68) led to significant improvements in body composition and cardiometabolic health. The training programs ranged from 4 to 48 weeks, with sessions lasting 4 to 30 min. Key body composition outcomes included reductions in body weight (SMD = −0.51), body mass index (SMD = −0.41), body fat percentage (SMD = −0.53), fat mass (SMD = −0.40), and waist circumference (SMD = −1.43), along with increases in lean body mass (SMD = 0.18). The effects were more pronounced in females and younger participants (≤18 years). Cardiometabolic benefits included reductions in systolic blood pressure (SMD = −0.59), diastolic blood pressure (SMD = −0.75), and mean arterial pressure (SMD = −0.91), as well as resting heart rates (SMD = −0.85), especially among females, obese males, and those subject to shorter rest intervals. Participants’ peak oxygen uptake also improved (SMD = 0.81). Concerning lipid metabolism, participants’ total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides decreased significantly, particularly in females, younger and obese individuals, and those who trained more than twice per week. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased significantly only in females and those involved in frequent training. In regard to glucose metabolism, participants’ fasting insulin declined (SMD = −0.47), especially in regard to programs exceeding 12 weeks, whereas no significant changes were observed in fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, or the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance. According to the GRADE assessments, the certainty of the evidence ranged from very low to moderate across these outcomes. Conclusions: Recreational football improves the body composition and cardiometabolic health in overweight or obese individuals, resulting in reductions in adiposity, blood pressure, lipids, and insulin, with greater benefits observed in females, younger individuals, and those engaging in more frequent training. These findings support its potential as a practical intervention for weight and cardiometabolic risk management, in both clinical and community settings. Full article

Digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), are reshaping the landscape of athletic training and performance assessment. Despite growing global interest, empirical research on AI adoption in sports remains limited in Central and Eastern Europe. This study investigates how Romanian sports professionals perceive and integrate AI-based applications and digital technologies into their training practices, and how these tools influence performance outcomes. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 293 athletes, coaches, and sports academics. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), we found that perceived AI benefits significantly predict the use of AI applications (β = 0.211, p < 0.001), which in turn strongly predicts the adoption of digital sports technologies (β = 0.708, p < 0.001). The use of digital technologies was positively associated with higher self-reported performance outcomes (β = 0.268, p < 0.001). Group comparisons using ANOVA revealed significant differences in AI adoption by sport (football > basketball, p < 0.05) and education level (p = 0.007). These findings contribute to the literature on sports technology adoption by offering one of Eastern Europe’s first empirical, model-based studies. The study provides practical insights for coaches, policymakers, and sports technologists aiming to foster AI integration and digital innovation in high-performance athletic environments. Background: Medical clearance for competitive sports is vital to safeguarding athletes’ health, particularly in high-intensity disciplines like football. In Italy, fitness assessments follow stringent protocols set by the Commissione di Vigilanza per il controllo dell’Idoneità Sportiva (COCIS), with a strong focus on cardiovascular screening. The primary goal is to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD), a rare but catastrophic event in athletes. Methods: This paper provides an in-depth narrative review of the 2023 COCIS guidelines, examining the cardiological screening process, required diagnostic tests, management of identified cardiovascular conditions, and the protocols’ role in reducing SCD risk. Results: Comparisons with international standards underscore the effectiveness of the Italian approach. Conclusions: The COCIS 2023 guidelines provide clear, evidence-based protocols for cardiovascular risk assessment, significantly enhancing athlete safety and reducing the incidence of SCD in high-intensity sports. Purpose: To investigate the impact of mental fatigue on the shooting accuracy and movement timing in the instep kick of Asian high-level soccer players. Methods: Eight male collegiate soccer players (age 22.00 ± 0.93 years) were tested before and after mental fatigue induction. Mental fatigue was induced via a 30 min Stroop task. The effectiveness of fatigue induction was assessed using heart rate variability (HRV), a visual analog scale (VAS), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). Shooting performance was evaluated before and after mental fatigue using the Loughborough Soccer Shooting Test (LSST) and by evaluating timing by means of high-speed imaging. Results: Following mental fatigue induction, HRV decreased. Subjects’ motivation (VAS) to exercise significantly decreased (p < 0.001), while VAS mental fatigue level (p < 0.001) and mental effort level (p < 0.002) significantly increased. Significant differences were observed after completing the Stroop task for ABQ Emotional/Physical Exhaustion (p < 0.007), Reduced Sense of Accomplishment (p < 0.007), Sport Devaluation (p < 0.006), and overall burnout level (p < 0.002). LSST showed that the subjects’ left foot test scores (−4.13, p < 0.013), right foot test scores (−3, p < 0.001), and total scores (−3.16, p < 0.001) significantly decreased. Although movement times increased slightly after fatigue, they did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Mental fatigue significantly impairs the shooting accuracy of collegiate soccer players, as evidenced by decreased LSST scores. However, it has no significant effect on event duration during shooting execution. Mental fatigue affected decision-making but not shooting movement timing. More cognitively challenging tasks are more affected by mental fatigue. Full article

Improving Event Data in Football Matches: A Case Study Model for Synchronizing Passing Events with Positional Data

In football, accurately pinpointing key events like passes is vital for analyzing player and team performance. Despite continuous technological advancements, existing tracking systems still face challenges in accurately synchronizing events and positional data accurately. This is a case study that proposes a new method to synchronize events and positional data collected during football matches. Three datasets were used to perform this study: a dataset created by applying a custom algorithm that synchronizes positional and event data, referred to as the optimized synchronization dataset (OSD); a simple temporal alignment between positional and event data, referred to as the raw synchronization dataset (RSD); and a manual notational data (MND) from the match video footage, considered the ground truth observations. The timestamp of the pass in both synchronized datasets was compared to the ground truth observations (MND). Spatial differences in OSD were also compared to the RSD data and to the original data from the provider. Root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) were utilized to assess the accuracy of both procedures. More accurate results were observed for optimized dataset, with RMSE values of RSD = 75.16 ms (milliseconds) and OSD = 72.7 ms, and MAE values RSD = 60.50 ms and OSD = 59.73 ms. Spatial accuracy also improved, with OSD showing reduced deviation from RSD compared to the original event data. The mean positional deviation was reduced from 1.59 ± 0.82 m in original event data to 0.41 ± 0.75 m in RSD. In conclusion, the model offers a more accurate method for synchronizing independent datasets for event and positional data. This is particularly beneficial for applications where precise timing and spatial location of actions are critical. In contrast to previous synchronization methods, this approach simplifies the process by using an automated technique based on patterns of ball velocity. This streamlines synchronization across datasets, reduces the need for manual intervention, and makes the method more practical for routine use in applied settings. Full article

Scanning When Passing: A Reliable and Valid Standardized Soccer Test

Background/Objectives: In soccer, scanning before receiving the ball helps players better perceive and interpret their surroundings, enabling faster and more effective passes. Despite its importance, no standardized tests currently incorporate scanning actions into assessments of passing abilities. In this study, we test the reliability and validity of a battery of passing tests that assess a player’s ability to control and pass the ball while also scanning for the appropriate target. Methods: We designed three passing tests that reflect different scanning demands that are routinely placed upon players during matches. Using players from the first and reserve teams of two professional clubs in Ghana (Club A, first-team n = 11, reserve-team n = 10; Club B, first-team n = 16, reserve-team n = 17), we: (i) tested the repeatability of each passing test (intraclass correlations), (ii) assessed whether the tests could distinguish between first and reserve team players (linear mixed-effects model), and (iii) examined whether players who were better in the passing tests had higher performances in 3v1 Rondo possession games (linear models). Results: All passing tests were significantly repeatable (ICCs = 0.77–0.85). Performance was highest in the 120-degree test (30.11 ± 7.22 passes/min), where scanning was not required, and was lowest in the 360-degree test (25.55 ± 5.94 passes/min), where players needed to constantly scan behind them. When players were scanning through an arc of 180 degrees, their average performance was 27.41 ± 6.14 passes/min. Overall passing performance significantly distinguished first from reserve team players (β = −1.47, t (51) = −4.32, p < 0.001)) and was positively associated with 3v1 Rondo possession performance (R2 = 0.51, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results show that these passing tests are reliable, distinguish players across competitive levels, and correlate with performance in possession games. These tests offer a simple, ecologically valid way to assess scanning and passing abilities for elite players. Full article

(1) Background: Physical inactivity is a major public health concern in modern society. Group fitness programs are widely used to promote physical activity, combining choreographed movements with various dance steps and music. This study aimed to examine the effects of Zumba and MoFit group fitness programs on body composition parameters in women. (2) Methods: The study included 98 female participants (Mean age = 27.8 ± 2.9 years), divided into three groups: E1 (n = 33), which followed the experimental Zumba program; E2 (n = 31), which followed the experimental MoFit program; and a control group (n = 34), which continued with their usual daily activities for 10 weeks. Body composition was assessed using 14 variables measured with the InBody 270 analyser. Statistical analyses included paired t-tests, MANCOVA, and ANCOVA. (3) Results: The findings confirmed the positive effects of both group fitness programs on most body composition parameters in women (p < 0.001). However, Bonferroni post hoc test results indicated that the Zumba program led to significantly greater improvements in most body composition variables compared to the MoFit program. (4) Conclusions: Both Zumba and MoFit programs were effective in reducing body fat, increasing muscle mass, total body water, and mineral content, whereas the control group did not achieve positive changes. Introduction: Despite clinical evidence for efficacy, there has been minimal uptake of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for musculoskeletal conditions. Thus, our objective was to explore the perceptions and experiences of people living with lower-limb musculoskeletal injury as well as healthy physically active populations and relate this to the usage of tDCS and key aspects of tDCS design that would improve the capacity for implementation. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study of 16 participants (44% women) using semi-structured focus groups to identify the descriptions and experiences of people living with lower-limb musculoskeletal injury and healthy physically active populations. A thematic template was used to create a coding structure. Codes were then grouped, and key themes were derived from the data. Results: Four primary themes were identified from focus groups. These were (i) the impact of musculoskeletal injuries on health and quality of life, (ii) performance and injury recovery as facilitators to using tDCS, (iii) barriers and facilitators to tCDS application and (iv) design and aesthetic factors for a tDCS device. Discussion: Our qualitative descriptive study identified four themes relevant to the successful implementation of tDCS into rehabilitative and performance practice. To increase the likelihood of successful tDCS implementation, these barriers should be addressed and facilitators promoted. This should include innovative approaches to device application and structure that allow for a stylish, user-friendly design. Full article

Participation in organized sport is widely encouraged for youth development, yet positive outcomes are not guaranteed. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping young athletes’ experiences, requiring emotional support, interpersonal skills, and self-regulation. This study examines the meanings parents attribute to their children’s sports participation and how young athletes construct their experiences under parental and coaching influences. An interpretive phenomenological methodology involved semi-structured interviews with coaches, focus groups with parents, and open-ended questionnaires to young athletes. Seventeen players (M = 11.2 years, SD = 0.59), nineteen parents (M = 47.6 years, SD = 3.61), and two coaches from the same football club volunteered to participate in the study. Participants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure a homogeneous experience. The findings reveal that parental involvement balances support and pressure, while trust-building between parents and coaches significantly impacts the athletes’ experiences. The evolving role of technology and the importance of social dynamics within teams also emerged as critical factors. Intrinsic motivation, fostering emotional bonding through the sport, and adopting a developmental rather than purely competitive framework were emphasized factors identified as supporting positive youth sport experiences. These findings offer insights into how interconnected relationships among parents, coaches, and athletes influence children’s sports engagement and development. Full article
