Research has well documented the far-reaching benefits of providing educational opportunities for individuals who are incarcerated, applicable to the students themselves and society. Given the many benefits, it is encouraging that access to U.S. Pell Grants for incarcerated students was restored in July 2023—the first time in nearly 30 years that need-based federal postsecondary financial aid was available to individuals in U.S. prisons. Although Pell Restoration enables an increasing number of colleges and universities to provide higher-education-in-prison (HEP) programs, this funding guarantees nothing about the quality and rigor of programming. In fact, relatively little is known about the nature, scope, and quality of HEP programs within the United States, and it is both timely and important to deeply examine these topics. The present study is a critical qualitative case study of three college-in-prison programs in the southern United States. To interrogate the nature and quality of the programs, this study explores the experiences and practices of program faculty and directors, drawing from research and scholarship in education and the behavioral sciences to examine two key areas: faculty training and the educational experiences made available to students. Multiple forms of data were collected, and two main findings emerged: (a) faculty training is piecemeal and limited, and (b) the educational experiences made available in the three programs are simultaneously empowering and disempowering. Using Ladson-Billings’s concept of the education debt (including its historical, moral, and economic underpinnings), this study highlights that the three college-in-prison programs—like many HEP programs across the United States—both contribute to and challenge the education debt. Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy in women. Currently, BC is treated with a holistic and multidisciplinary approach from diagnostic, surgical, radio-oncological, and medical perspectives, and advances including in early detection and treatment methods have led to improved outcomes for patients in recent years. Yet, BC remains the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women and there is an array of gaps to achieve optimal care. To close gaps in cancer care, here we describe a collaborative Request For Proposals (RFP) framework supporting independent initiatives for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients and aiming at improving their quality of care. We set up a collaborative framework between Pfizer and Sharing Progress in Cancer Care (SPCC). Our model is based on an RFP system in which Pfizer and SPCC worked together ensuring the independence of the funded projects. We developed a three-step life cycle RFP. The collaborating framework of the project was based on an RFP with a USD 1.5 million available budget for funding independent grants made available from Pfizer and managed in terms of awareness, selection, and monitoring by SPCC. Our three-step model could be applicable and scalable to quality improvement (QI) initiatives that are devoted to tackling obstacles to reaching optimal care. Through this model, seven projects from five different European countries were supported. These projects covered a range of issues related to the experience of patients with MBC: investigator communication, information, and shared decision-making (SDM) practices across Europe; development, delivery, and evaluation of a scalable online educational program for nurses; assessment of disparities among different minority patient groups; development of solutions to improve compliance or adherence to therapy; an information technology (IT) solution to improve quality of life (QoL) of patients with MBC and an initiative to increase awareness and visibility of MBC patients. Overall, an average of 171 healthcare professionals (HCPs) per project and approximately 228,675 patients per project were impacted. We set up and describe a partnership model among different stakeholders within the healthcare ecosystem―academia, non-profit organizations, oncologists, and pharmaceutical companies―aiming at supporting independent projects to close gaps in the care of patients with MBC. By removing barriers at different layers, these projects contributed to the achievement of optimal care for patients with MBC. Full article

This study investigates how Estonian L1 students with high self-perceived English proficiency experience and (re)produce the language ideological regime at the University of Tartu. Situated within the broader context of globalization and Englishization in higher education, and informed by scholarships on language ideologies, critical language policy, and stakeholder perspectives within EMI, the study explores how students position themselves in relation to their peers and academic staff, and how they evaluate the advantages and challenges associated with different language repertoires. The analysis is based on 17 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2024 with students enrolled in Estonian-medium programs that incorporate English expectations and practices. Findings show that students perceive their repertoire as an asset, granting full access to academic content and networks. Yet, their accounts also reveal challenges related to academic literacy. Students position themselves as competent users of English and sometimes question the legitimacy of those with perceived weaker skills. The study highlights how English privilege and native-speakerism intersect to shape perceptions of academic competence and authority. It calls for great attention to stratifying language ideologies to foster more inclusive and equitable academic environments. Full article

Hairless canary seed (Phalaris canariensis L.) can play significant roles in human health and nutrition due to its unique nutrient profile. It belongs to the Gramineae family similar to common cereal grains like wheat, rice and corn. On the other hand, the traditional canary seed is characterized by the presence of silicified spicules or hairs on the hulls of the kernel that could pose health hazards to humans. The hairless canary seed was developed in Canada by a conventional breeding program to mitigate the health concerns associated with the silicified hairs. The hairless grain is silica free, i.e., totally glabrous, and is granted regulatory food approvals by Health Canada and US-FDA. The hairless grain holds a great potential as a whole grain functional food ingredient due to its unique nutritional and functional attributes. As a cereal grain, it is rich in protein that is non-gluten and exceptionally high in tryptophan and bioactive peptides. The grain also contains reasonable amounts of carotenoids, polyphenols, and healthy unsaturated oil. Because of these special characteristics, it is considered a promising nutritious and therapeutic food. This review provides insights into the potential of hairless canary seed as a functional ingredient in products designed to mitigate oxidative stress, diabetes and celiac disease and/or to improve vision and cognition. Conducting scientific research in craniomaxillofacial surgery presents distinct challenges, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. This study aimed to assess research interests, barriers, and support needs among surgeons in the region through an anonymous online survey conducted via Google Forms from 12 to 31 May 2025, with 169 responses collected. The survey included 13 structured questions and an open-ended comment section. Findings were compared with a similar survey done in Latin America in 2024, to identify regional differences. The results revealed a significant gap in research participation, with 18.3% of Asia Pacific respondents having no publications, unlike Latin America, where all had at least one. Familiarity and participation in the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AO PEER) were lower in Asia Pacific (29% and 6.5%), and greater challenges were reported in establishing topics, research methodology, and data collection. Although interest was high, only 42% conducted research frequently, and 90.5% indicated a need for mentorship. Despite higher awareness of AO grant opportunities (58%), barriers, like inadequate support for scientific research, lack of training, and limited time, persist. These findings highlight the need for AO Craniomaxillofacial surgery (AOCMF) to implement targeted strategies, such as research training, mentorship, promotion of funding opportunities, and support for multi-center collaborations, to enhance research participation across the region. This study evaluates the 2022 rollout of the Clean School Bus Rebate Program (CSBRP) to understand how eligibility rules and data practices shape funding distribution across communities with varying needs. We ask whether more accurate maps can improve environmental funding outcomes or whether challenges stem from how agencies define and apply eligibility criteria. Using logistic regression and dasymetric mapping, we find that prioritization criteria helped direct funds to underserved areas, but reliance on school district boundaries introduced inconsistencies that affected program reach. Including charter schools as independent applicants increased competition and sometimes diverted funds from larger public systems serving more. Our geospatial analysis shows that while refined mapping approaches improve resource targeting and reduce goal-outcome mismatches, agency discretion and administrative rules remain key factors in ensuring equitable outcomes. The Arctic Ocean is turning blue. Abrupt Arctic warming and amplification is driving rapid sea ice decline and irreversible deglaciation of Greenland. The already emerging, substantial consequences for the planet and society are intensifying and yet, model-based projections lack validatory consensus. To date, we cannot anticipate how a blue Arctic will respond to and amplify an increasingly warmer future climate, nor how it will impact the wider planet and society. Climate projections are inconclusive as we critically lack key Arctic geological archives that preserved the answers. This “Arctic Challenge” of global significance can only be addressed by investigating the processes, consequences, and impacts of past “greenhouse” (warmer-than-present) climate states. To address this challenge, the ERC Synergy Grant project Into the Blue (i2B) is undertaking a program of research focused on retrieving new Arctic geological archives of past warmth and key breakthroughs in climate model performance to deliver a ground-breaking, synergistic framework to answer the central question: “Why and what were the global ramifications of a “blue” (ice-free) Arctic during past warmer-than-present climates?” Here, we present the proposed research plan that will be conducted as part of this program. Into the Blue will quantify cryosphere (sea ice and land ice) change in a warmer world that will form the scientific basis for understanding the dynamics of Arctic cryosphere and ocean changes to enable the quantitative assessment of the impact of Arctic change on ocean biosphere, climate extremes, and society that will underpin future cryosphere-inclusive IPCC assessments. Of breast cancers, the triple-negative subtype (TNBC) is characterized by aggressive behavior, poor prognosis and limited treatment options due to its high molecular heterogeneity. Since insufficient programmed cell death response is a major hallmark of cancer, here we searched for apoptosis-related biomarkers of prognostic potential in TNBC. The expression of the pro-apoptotic caspase 8, cytochrome c, caspase 3, the anti-apoptotic BCL2 and the caspase-independent mediator, apoptosis-inducing factor-1 (AIF1; gene AIFM1) was tested in TNBC both in silico at transcript and protein level using KM-Plotter, and in situ in our clinical TNBC cohort of 103 cases using immunohistochemistry. Expression data were correlated with overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). We found that elevated expression of the executioner apoptotic factors AIF1 and caspase 3, and of BCL2, grants significant OS advantage within TNBC, both at the mRNA and protein level, particularly for chemotherapy-treated vs untreated patients. The dominantly cytoplasmic localization of AIF1 and cleaved-caspase 3 proteins in primary TNBC suggests that chemotherapy may recruit them from the cytoplasmic/mitochondrial stocks to contribute to improved patient survival in proportion to their expression. Our results suggest that testing for the expression of AIF1, caspase 3 and BCL2 may identify partly overlapping TNBC subgroups with favorable prognosis, warranting further research into the potential relevance of apoptosis-targeting treatment strategies. Gender inequality remains a persistent issue in healthcare, especially in ophthalmology, where women face systemic barriers such as pay gaps, limited surgical opportunities, harassment, and unequal family expectations. Despite increasing entry into the field, women remain underrepresented in leadership, affecting career advancement and patient care. This study examines how virtual platforms, and co-led initiatives can address gender disparities in eye health. In 2021, Women in Ophthalmology, Seva Foundation, and Orbis International launched the Women’s Leaders in Eye Health (WLEH) initiative—a global community promoting mentorship, networking, and leadership development. Starting with virtual webinars and informal networking, the initiative expanded to in-person events in 2023 due to strong global engagement and demand. Early virtual programming, including webinars and “Coffee Hour” sessions, proved effective and laid the groundwork for broader offerings such as mentorship and professional development grants. WLEH’s success underscores the power of collaboration in promoting gender equity. By fostering connections and leadership pathways, WLEH offers a scalable model to break down gender challenges and uplift the next generation of women leaders to deliver more accessible eyecare globally. Bicycle use has been increasing in many countries for active, sustainable transportation and recreation. Bicycling can benefit an individual’s mental and physical health and contribute to a community’s well-being and desirability, and it is more environmentally sustainable than automobiles. Nonprofit organizations lead bicycle advocacy efforts in the USA, both for bicycling as recreation and as part of local transportation systems. Outride is one of the larger advocacy organizations, and it sponsors a unique grant system targeting grassroots bicycling organizations dedicated to increasing bicycling. Using the Bicycle Community Development Framework (BCDF) as a lens, this study aims to evaluate Outride’s efforts through an interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA) using semi-structured interviews to gather data regarding grant recipients’ experiences using Outride funds. Findings suggest fund recipients are increasing bicycling through programs and infrastructure development, but with more intentionality, could better support building bicycle communities. Regarding the BCDF, the recipients strongly promoted education, engineering, and equity & accessibility while fostering a sense of community, belonging, and empowerment in their participants. The growing global demand for sustainable energy solutions has spurred interest in hybrid renewable energy systems, particularly those combining photovoltaic (PV) solar and wind power. This study records the technical and financial feasibility of establishing hybrid solar photovoltaic and wind power stations in Iraq, Al-Rutbah and Al-Nasiriya, with a total power of 60 MW for each, focusing on optimizing energy output and cost-efficiency. The analysis evaluates key technical factors, such as resource availability, system design, and integration challenges, alongside financial considerations, including capital costs, operational expenses, and return on investment (ROI). Using the RETScreen program, the research explores potential locations and configurations for maximizing energy production and minimizing costs, and the evaluation is performed through the calculation Internal Rate of Return (IRR) on equity (%), the Simple Payback (year), the Net Present Value (NPV), and the Annual Life Cycle Savings (ALCSs). The results show that both PV and wind technologies demonstrate significant energy export potential, with PV plants exporting slightly more electricity than their wind counterparts. Al Nasiriya Wind had the highest output, indicating favorable wind conditions or better system performance at that site. The results show that the analysis of the proposed hybrid system has a standardizing effect on emissions, reducing variability and environmental impact regardless of location. The results demonstrate that solar PV is significantly more financially favorable in terms of capital recovery time at both sites, and that financial incentives, especially grants, are essential to improve project attractiveness, particularly for wind power. The analysis underscores the superior financial viability of solar PV projects in both regions. It highlights the critical role of financial support, particularly capital grants, in turning renewable energy investments into economically attractive opportunities. Full article

In the last five years, several scholars have collaborated in an integrated research program focused on students identified with both academic talents and autism spectrum disorder (2eASD) with support from a Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education grant. Several different empirical studies were initiated and completed during this period, investigating the ways in which some of these twice-exceptional students have been able to be successful in secondary school and highly competitive colleges. In this article, we summarize findings from several of these studies, synthesizing implications and recommendations with a goal of offering research-based practices, especially related to healthy social and emotional development and strong academic achievement in students identified as 2eASD. Participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields is crucial, as these fields present an opportunity for individuals to overcome socio-economic adversities such as unemployment and poverty. In South Africa, access to STEM education has improved in recent years, partly due to the availability of study grants for learners interested in these fields. However, evidence shows that women remain underrepresented in STEM fields. Gender stereotypes, bullying, and pay disparities are cited as some of the contributing factors. Despite these overwhelming challenges, female learners are increasingly pursuing STEM education. Guided by the resilience theory, we explored the factors motivating female learners to enroll in STEM fields at a public secondary school level in South Africa. The research adopted the snowball sampling technique to recruit learners attending a public secondary school in South Africa. Due to COVID-19-related restrictions in 2022, the research data was collected through telephonic one-on-one interviews. The findings revealed that access to competitive employment opportunities, impactful careers, personal growth, and financial independence were some factors sparking the female learners’ interest in STEM. However, the learners experienced gender stereotypes and discrimination, which made them doubt their abilities to thrive in STEM education/fields. To cope with the complexities of STEM, the learners relied on their caregivers for emotional support, and they attended extra lessons and tutorials offered by the education system. The findings highlight the need for the government to prioritize support programs for female learners who must continuously fight rejection in STEM fields. Full article

Background/Objectives: Comprehensive care is crucial in emergency healthcare. In intensive care units, a holistic approach may be difficult to implement due to the conditions of the patients and existing work protocols aimed at maintaining vital functions for the survival of patients. The present study aims to explore and describe the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of critical care and emergency health professionals regarding the implementation of integrated care practices within intensive care units, with the goal of identifying barriers and facilitators to adopting a holistic approach in emergency healthcare settings. Methods: This study implemented an exploratory and descriptive qualitative design with a phenomenological approach through semi-structured interviews with health professionals who had worked in intensive care units or emergency services for both public and private health institutions in Spain (n = 25). The study was conducted during the years 2023 and 2024, using a convenience sampling method along with snowball sampling, and a narrative discourse analysis was performed. The MAXQDA 2022 software program was used. This study was granted due permission by the Research Ethics Committee belonging to the Junta de Andalucía, under protocol code 0768-N-20. Results: The total sample consisted of 25 healthcare professionals from critical care and emergency services in Spain. The main themes, as key findings, were knowledge and perception, determining factors, resources and infrastructure, the bioethical dimension, perspectives on comprehensive care, and multidimensional impact. Most of the professionals were familiar with comprehensive care, but lack of resources and time prevented them from carrying it out in their units. Conclusions: For critical care and emergency professionals, comprehensive care is important to their clinical practice, but barriers to its realization still exist. Understanding the importance to these professionals of the application of comprehensive care is fundamental to establishing measures for its implementation in these services. It is also a motivation to continue providing humanized and compassionate care that respects the patient’s dignity. It is a priority to provide the necessary infrastructure and human resources so that patients admitted to these units can be cared for with this tool. Full article

This article aims to identify the influence of the social dynamics experienced by basketball players, specifically the type of support and help they received during their formative years in the sport. To this end, we conducted a mixed-method study with a sequential explanatory design. Quantitative data were collected from Brazilian athletes aged 18 and 19 (n = 141), followed by in-depth interviews with 24 athletes. The Kruskal–Wallis test was used to determine the differences between the age groups, and the association between the qualitative variables was analyzed using the Chi2 test, which was aided by the SPSS statistical program. Thematic analysis guided the coding and analysis of the qualitative data. The results showed that the family provided support at all formative stages, with the type and amount of the support supplied changing over time. Three types of support provided by family members were identified, with emotional and tangible support being more prevalent up to age 17. In contrast, informational support was more prominent in the final phase of sports training. Peers mainly provided emotional and informational support, especially from the age of 15. The results showed that the club, school, and coaches supported the athletes to keep playing basketball, usually through transportation, scholarships, food, and athlete grants. These findings provide valuable information on the dynamic nature of social relationships in the athlete development process. They also show that the support offered influences the wider environment to optimize or hinder athletic development in basketball. There is still a long way to go in understanding the social dynamics within the complex development processes in sports. Longitudinal studies with ecological, conceptual, and methodological approaches that provide a more integrative, complementary, holistic, and contextualized view of the influence of social dynamics on athlete training and sports participation could be an avenue to explore in future research.
