Background/Objectives: The retinal microvasculature may reflect systemic vascular health and can be non-invasively imaged using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Investigation of the capillary plexuses in the macula and the peripapillary area could potentially provide insights into the pathophysiology of ocular manifestations in preeclampsia. We aimed to review the literature on OCTA metrics in preeclampsia to evaluate its use in this condition. Methods: A literature search was performed using the PubMed database, and studies published up to December 2024 were included. Results: We summarized the current evidence on chorioretinal microvascular changes in pregnancy and the ocular manifestations of preeclampsia. We reported findings from seven published studies characterizing the chorioretinal capillary plexuses in preeclampsia using OCTA. These revealed changes in microvasculature characteristics, such as foveal avascular zone size and vessel density in the macula and the peripapillary area; however, there was variability in reported parameters. Conclusions: Microvascular changes in the chorioretinal capillary plexus in preeclampsia were reported by several studies; however, results were inconsistent and may have been affected by multiple factors. Nevertheless, OCTA may have diagnostic and prognostic value, by providing evidence of microcirculation sequalae and aiding our understanding of ocular manifestations in this condition. Further studies are warranted to establish appropriate OCTA acquisition protocols and metrics, and whether these could guide clinical practice in preeclampsia. Full article

Green and Efficient Synthetic Protocol for 1,3,5-Triazine Derivatives with Anticancer Potential Against Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major global health challenge, necessitating the development of more effective and environmentally sustainable treatments. This study presents a novel green synthetic protocol for 1,3,5-triazine derivatives with anticancer potential, employing both microwave-assisted and ultrasound-assisted methods. The synthesis was optimized using 4-chloro-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-6-(morpholin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazin-2-amine as the key intermediate, with sodium carbonate, TBAB, and DMF providing optimal yields under microwave conditions. To enhance sustainability, a modified sonochemical method was also developed, enabling efficient synthesis in aqueous media with a minimal use of organic solvents. A series of nine morpholine-functionalized derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxic activity against SW480 and SW620 colorectal cancer cell lines. Compound 11 demonstrated superior antiproliferative activity (IC₅₀ = 5.85 µM) compared to the reference drug 5-fluorouracil, while compound 5 showed promising dual-line activity. In silico ADME analysis supported the drug likeness of the synthesized compounds, and biomimetic chromatography analysis confirmed favorable physicochemical properties, including lipophilicity and membrane affinity. These results underscore the potential of the developed protocol to produce bioactive triazine derivatives through an efficient, scalable, and environmentally friendly process, offering a valuable strategy for future anticancer drug development. Disabled women have historically been marginalized from sexuality education and discussions due to harmful stereotypes that portray them as asexual or incompatible with cis-heteroreproductive sexual norms. To assess whether these assumptions are supported by empirical evidence, a scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O’Malley’s proposal and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The protocol is registered with the Open Science Framework. EBSCOhost, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases were searched to map peer-reviewed scientific articles published between 2013 and 2023 on disabled women’s sexual practices. Seven qualitative studies were selected and analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. Four key themes were identified: Reclaiming Sexuality, Navigating Constraints, Barriers to Awareness, and Building Inclusive Futures. The findings illustrate the diversity of sexual experiences among disabled women and highlight their active role in overcoming the barriers imposed by their bodies and environments. This review contributes to a broader discourse on sexuality and disability, challenges oversimplified narratives of de-sexualization, and provides evidence supporting a paradigm shift towards inclusive, affirmative sexual health education. Further research and policy reforms are essential to ensure recognition of their sexual citizenship, desires, and lived realities. Full article

(1) Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by dopaminergic neuronal loss. Tissue stem cell-based therapies have emerged as promising candidates for disease modification and symptomatic relief. This scoping review aims to systematically synthesise the literature on tissue stem cell therapies for PD across cellular, animal, and human studies, with a focus on transplantation strategies, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic outcomes. (2) Methods: We identified 1017 records by querying PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and the Virtual Health Library. After screening and applying eligibility criteria, 33 experimental studies were included. Data were extracted on study design, tissue stem cell source, type of subject, and therapeutic effects. (3) Results: Most studies (n = 25) involved animal models, with a minority (n = 8) focusing on human applications. Tissue stem cell therapies showed potential to promote dopaminergic differentiation, reduce inflammation and apoptosis, and improve behavioural and motor outcomes. Autologous transplants yielded a higher safety and efficacy compared to allogeneic ones. The beneficial mechanisms of tissue stem cells included neurotrophic support, mitochondrial protection, modulation of the gut–brain axis, and α-synuclein clearance. (4) Conclusions: Tissue stem cell therapies represent a promising approach for PD. However, standardised protocols and long-term safety assessments are essential to optimise their translational potential. Full article

Olive oil (OO) has longstanding significance in human history, particularly in the Mediterranean region, where it has been a cornerstone of diet, economy, and culture. This history adds to modern evidence-based knowledge. Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD), rich in plant-based foods and OO, has been extensively associated with improved cardiometabolic and cognitive health. Recent interest has emerged in understanding how intermittent fasting protocols may enhance these effects. Still, the quality of OO does not only lie in the extraction process; it is also dependent on the tree variety, the soil, and the agricultural practices, ending with the way in which the finished product is stored and consumed. Objectives: This review explores the synergistic potential between OO consumption and intermittent fasting, focusing on their combined impact on metabolic health, oxidative stress, and inflammatory pathways. Methods: A literature search was conducted using multiple databases to identify studies addressing the health effects of OO, fasting, and the MD. Both human and relevant preclinical studies were considered, with emphasis on those evaluating inflammatory markers, lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and neuroprotective mechanisms. Results: Evidence suggests that the bioactive compounds in EVOO may potentiate the benefits of fasting by enhancing antioxidant capacity, reducing postprandial inflammation, and modulating gene expression related to cellular metabolism. Combined, these factors may support improved insulin sensitivity, reduced oxidative damage, and delayed onset of age-related diseases. Conclusions: Understanding the integrative role of OO and fasting within the MD framework could offer valuable insights for nutritional strategies aimed at preventing metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegeneration. These findings also support the need for future clinical trials exploring the timing, dosage, and dietary context in which these interventions are most effective. Full article

Indigenous Peoples have stewarded Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) for millennia. Health-related TEK represents vital knowledge that promotes Indigenous health and wellbeing. Yet, the intergenerational protection of TEK continues to be threatened by various factors, including climate change, which underscores the importance of strengthening and supporting Indigenous-managed TEK repositories. Using a scoping review methodology, we aimed to identify documents for setting up health-related TEK repositories within Indigenous communities. A systematic search was completed in multiple databases—Medline, PubMed, CABI abstracts, Canadian Public Policy Collection, and JSTOR—with manual searches carried out on relevant Indigenous repositories and Google. Content analysis was then carried out with the nine documents meeting our inclusion criteria. We characterized six overarching categories and twelve sub-categories from the included documents. These categories covered impacts on Indigenous TEK repositories resulting from colonial processes, with TEK being seen as diverse, living knowledge protected by longstanding cultural protocols. Concerns surrounding TEK repository management included the need for platforming Indigenous data sovereignty and Indigenous Peoples’ access and ownership. Wise practices of Indigenous-led repository development demonstrated clear examples of data governance processes in action. Indigenous communities were seen to be vital in contributing to key policies and protocols that protect health-related TEK. Full article

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) was originally used for medical and industrial purposes, but its recreational use has dramatically increased, raising a major global public health concern. Chronic inhalation is associated with neurological, metabolic, and psychiatric complications, as well as addiction. To address these challenges, the PROTOSIDE network was developed to provide a multidisciplinary approach to management and prevention. This initiative relies on competence centers integrating specialists in emergency medicine, neurology, clinical biochemistry, and addiction medicine. PROTOSIDE aims to standardize diagnostic protocols, optimize patient care pathways, and strengthen addictovigilance. A strong emphasis is placed on prevention, including awareness campaigns and collaboration with healthcare professionals and educators. By facilitating access to advanced biochemical analyses (homocysteine, methylmalonic acid) and promoting international guidelines, PROTOSIDE represents an innovative model for a global response to N₂O misuse. This integrated approach enhances clinical management, reduces complications, and harmonizes public health strategies. Full article

Metabolic and inflammatory stress during early lactation poses significant risks to dairy cow health and productivity. This study aimed to assess the physiological, metabolic, and inflammatory differences between dairy cows producing low (LL; <4.5%) and high (HL; ≥4.5%) milk lactose, focusing on C-reactive protein (CRP), liver function markers, iron metabolism, and reticulorumen health. A total of 71 clinically healthy lactating multiparous cows (20–30 days postpartum) were monitored using real-time physiological sensors, milk composition analysis, blood biomarkers and continuous reticulorumen pH measurement (every 10 min). Cows in the LL group showed significantly higher aspartate transaminase (AST) activity (p = 0.042), lower serum iron (Fe) concentration (p = 0.013), and reduced reticulorumen pH (p = 0.03). Although CRP concentrations did not differ significantly between groups, correlation analysis revealed positive associations with non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) (r = 0.335, p = 0.043), reticulorumen pH (r = 0.498, p = 0.002), and body temperature (r = 0.372, p = 0.023). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis identified gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) (AUC = 0.66), AST (AUC = 0.63), and NEFA (AUC = 0.58) as moderate predictors of low milk lactose levels. Conversely, Fe (AUC = 0.66) and reticulorumen pH (AUC = 0.64) showed moderate ability to predict higher lactose content. These results support the integration of milk lactose, liver enzymes, and inflammatory biomarkers into precision health monitoring protocols. The combined use of CRP and milk lactose as complementary biomarkers may enhance the early identification of metabolic stress and support more targeted dairy herd health management. Full article

The Impact of a Novel Transfer Process on Patient Bed Days and Length of Stay: A Five-Year Comparative Study at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Mankato Quaternary and Tertiary Care Centers

Introduction: This study evaluated the impact of parallel-level patient transfers on bed utilization efficiency within the Mayo Clinic Health System in Southern Minnesota, focusing on optimizing resources across tertiary and critical access hospitals. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 179,066 Emergency Department visits (2018–2022) was conducted, with ~2% involving parallel-level transfers for observation or admission. Machine learning was utilized to identify patients suitable for parallel transfers based on demographics, comorbidities, and clinical factors. A Random Forest model with an AUROC of 0.87 guided transfer decisions. Saved patient days were calculated as the difference between the actual LOS and the benchmark LOS based on Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs). Generalized estimating equations analyzed length of stay (LOS) differences, adjusted for confounders, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS (v.26). Results: The mean patient age was 56 years (SD = 17.2), with 51.4% being female. Saved patient days increased from ~600 to 5200 days over the study period. Transferred patients had a 5.7% longer unadjusted LOS compared to non-transferred patients (95% CI: 2.9–8.6%, p < 0.001). After adjustment for demographics and comorbidities, the LOS difference was not significant (adjusted mean difference: 0.4%, 95% CI: −1.7–2.5%, p = 0.51). Conclusions: Parallel-level transfers increased saved patient days, reflecting enhanced resource utilization. However, the adjusted LOS differences were not significant, highlighting the need for robust transfer protocols and controlled studies to confirm these findings. Full article

The recent spread of foreign animal diseases (FADs) such as foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever emphasizes the need to conduct comprehensive surveillance to detect a potential disease introduction as soon as possible. The United States is currently free of many important FADs of swine, and many preparedness initiatives have raised awareness amongst the commercial, intensive swine industry. However, the awareness and engagement of small-scale swine farmers regarding disease surveillance and passive reporting is not well known. This scoping review was conducted to identify and characterize sources of evidence on the practices and attitudes of small-scale swine farmers and owners in the United States regarding pig health and disease management, surveillance, and veterinary care use, and secondarily to characterize information seeking and communication behaviors. Sources of evidence were found through keyword searches of online databases, citation matching, and Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education project reports. Eligibility criteria included being conducted on or with US small-scale (defined in this review as less than 1000 pigs) or non-intensive swine farms and containing information pertinent to the objectives of the review. Seventeen sources were included in the final review. Regular disease monitoring and surveillance practices were not commonly reported, and multiple sources reported little to no incidence of disease occurrence in small-scale swine farms. Reported veterinary use and access was variable, and multiple sources reported that the choice to use veterinary care was affected by its perceived cost, value, and accessibility. Future research and outreach should aim to discern key factors affecting farmer’s decisions to use a veterinarian, improve their awareness and prioritization of swine diseases, and develop small-scale appropriate disease surveillance protocols. Ultimately, this will help small-scale swine farmers to protect the health of their pigs and improve FAD surveillance in the US. Full article

Background/Objectives:This retrospective cohort study compared the outcomes (postoperative pain, morphine consumption, sleep disturbance, and function) of patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair involving either continuous interscalene block (CISB group) or single-injection interscalene block with intravenous dexmedetomidine (SISB group) analgesia. Methods: This study included 61 patients, aged 59–71 years, who underwent elective arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and for whom complete electronic health records were available. Patients in the SISB group received a single-injection nerve block plus intraoperative intravenous dexmedetomidine and postoperative patient-controlled analgesia (PCA; morphine and dexmedetomidine; n = 33). Patients in the CISB group received continuous nerve block and morphine PCA (n = 28). Patient sleep disturbances, pain, total morphine consumption, and functional outcomes were evaluated postoperatively. Results: During the first 36 h postoperatively, there were no significant differences in the measured effects for patients in the two groups. Similarly, there were no significant differences in functional outcomes. However, patients in the SISB group had a significantly lower median morphine consumption total (18 mg) than those in the CISB group (24 mg; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients in the SISB group demonstrated significantly lower median morphine consumption than those in the CISB group; however, the postoperative pain, frequency of sleep disturbances, nausea, and functional outcomes did not show statistically significant differences. The reduced morphine consumption associated with the SISB group, compared with the CISB group, suggests that this analgesic protocol may result in fewer opioid-related effects following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Citizen science (CS) is increasingly recognized as a complementary approach for addressing soil health challenges—including erosion, pollution, nutrient imbalances, and biodiversity loss—by harnessing public participation to broaden spatial and temporal data collection. This review synthesizes findings from the following: (i) a systematic analysis of peer-reviewed literature and grey sources, (ii) a database of 96 CS initiatives compiled by the European PREPSOIL project, and (iii) questionnaire surveys and workshops conducted in five Living Labs across Europe. Our analysis indicates that volunteer-driven monitoring can enhance the volume and granularity of soil data, providing critical insights into parameters such as organic carbon content, nutrient levels, and pollutant concentrations. However, persistent challenges remain, including inconsistencies in data validation, volunteer attrition, and concerns regarding digital literacy and data privacy. Despite these challenges, ongoing efforts to standardize protocols, integrate remote sensing and sensor-based validation methods, and employ feedback mechanisms improve data reliability and participant engagement. We conclude that sustained capacity-building, transparent data governance, and stakeholder collaboration, from local communities to governmental bodies, are essential for fully realizing the potential of citizen science in soil conservation. This work is framed within the context of the European Soil Mission, and CS is demonstrated to meaningfully support sustainable land management and evidence-based policymaking by aligning public-generated observations with established scientific frameworks. Air pollution is an escalating global concern with significant implications for human health and athletic performance. This narrative review synthesizes and critically compares the current literature on the impact of air pollution on health and football performance, elucidates the physiological mechanisms involved, and evaluates available mitigation strategies. Comparative studies consistently demonstrate that football players—who frequently engage in high-intensity outdoor exercise—are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of airborne pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO). These pollutants bypass natural respiratory defenses due to increased pulmonary ventilation during exercise, reaching deeper lung regions and triggering oxidative stress, inflammation, and impaired lung function. Evidence across studies indicates that poor air quality is associated with decreased football performance, including reduced distance covered, fewer high-intensity efforts, elevated physiological strain, and diminished training adaptation. Long-term exposure exacerbates respiratory conditions, suppresses immune function, and heightens the risk of illness and injury. Furthermore, comparative genetic research highlights inter-individual variability in pollution sensitivity, with specific gene variants conferring either increased vulnerability or resilience to adverse effects. This review also explores practical and emerging mitigation strategies—such as timing training to avoid peak pollution, utilizing air quality monitoring and antioxidant-rich diets, and promoting sustainable infrastructure—to safeguard athlete health and optimize performance. Novel approaches including respiratory training, anti-smog masks, indoor sessions, and personalized recovery protocols offer additional protection and recovery support. Full article

Background: Gambling behaviors among college students are a growing public health concern, with problem gambling rates significantly higher in this population than in the general public. Aim: This study outlines the protocol for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the efficacy of RESPONSIBLEPLAY©, a Multi-theory Model (MTM)-based intervention designed to promote responsible gambling behaviors. Proposed Methods: The intervention integrates six MTM constructs—participatory dialogue, behavioral confidence, changes in the physical environment, emotional transformation, practice for change, and changes in the social environment—to address the initiation and sustenance of behavior change. College students aged 21 and older, scoring 3 or higher on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), will be randomly assigned to either the MTM-based intervention group or a traditional knowledge-based intervention group. The participants will complete surveys assessing PGSI and MTM constructs at pre-test, post-test, and eight-week follow-up. This study aims to provide evidence for the efficacy of theory-driven intervention compared to a knowledge-based approach. Conclusions: If successful, this protocol will establish a robust framework for mitigating gambling-related harm in vulnerable college populations, paving the way for scalable, evidence-based interventions in diverse settings. The findings will contribute to the development of public health strategies that integrate theoretical constructs with practical applications to address high-risk behaviors. Full article

Background and Objectives: A prominent area of research in adolescent ACL reconstruction (ACLR) involves graft selection, with particular interest in the quadriceps tendon (QT) as an alternative to hamstring tendon (HT) autografts, although comparative studies on muscle strength outcomes and patient satisfaction in adolescents remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the influence of QT and HT autografts on muscle strength and satisfaction outcomes post-ACLR in adolescents. Methods: This prospective study was conducted at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, enrolling 68 patients aged 12–17. ACLRs were performed using QT or HT autografts. Muscle strength was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex), while patient satisfaction was evaluated through IKDC, Lysholm, and ACL-RSI surveys preoperatively and 12 months postoperatively. Results: 54 patients (24 QT and 30 HT) completed the study. The data are non-parametric and are presented as median (IQR). Isokinetic measurements indicated that QT harvesting led to significantly lower extension strength compared to HT 6 months (p = 0.019) and 12 months post-op (p < 0.001) but showed better H/Q ratios 6 months (p = 0.019) and 12 months post-op (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the QT and HT groups in ACL-RSI and Lysholm scores. IKDC scores were significantly higher in the HT group (p = 0.009). Conclusions: QT autografts provide favorable H/Q ratios, yet they exhibit weaker extension strength and lower satisfaction outcomes compared to HT. These results suggest a need for individualized rehabilitation protocols and further research to optimize ACLR graft selection for adolescents. Full article
