Recycling Workers: Food Insecurity as a Novel Associated Risk Factor for Toxocariasis

(1) Background: Brazil features one of the largest recycling workforces worldwide, with around 800,000 informal waste pickers, mostly living in urban areas of major cities and dealing with low income and precarious working conditions. This context of vulnerability may lead to a high risk of food insecurity, which may be associated with infectious diseases, particularly toxocariasis, a cosmopolitan neglected parasitic zoonosis with high seroprevalence in tropical countries. (2) Methods: Accordingly, this study assessed Toxocara spp. seropositivity and associated risk factors (including food insecurity) in recycling workers of Curitiba, a major Brazilian (fully urban) city currently ranked 8th in population with 1.83 million habitants, 7th in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and 10th in Human Development Index (HDI) with 0.823 (very high), out of 5569 Brazilian cities. Recycling and non-recycling (used as population control) workers living in the same neighborhood were invited, voluntarily signed consent forms, and had blood serum samples collected and tested by ELISA for detecting anti-Toxocara spp. (IgG) antibodies; in addition, an epidemiological questionnaire (socioeconomic characteristics, owning dog/cat, food and hygiene habits) was applied. (3) Results: Overall, 95/177 (53.7%) recycling and 38/100 (38.0%) non-recycling workers tested positive by ELISA, with recycling workers more likely seropositive than non-recycling population (53.7% vs. 38.0%; OR: 1.89; 95% CI: 1.15–3.12%). Food insecurity (OR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.04–3.91) and low (<1 minimum wage) monthly household income (OR = 3.03, 95% CI: 1.01–9.71) were associated with Toxocara spp. seropositivity by multivariate analysis. As expected, cohabitation with both dogs and cats was also significantly associated with seropositivity (OR = 3.75, 95% CI: 1.48–9.75). However, other assessed variables (gender, age, ethnicity, hygienic habits, contact with soil, raw meat ingestion) were not associated with seropositivity. (4) Conclusions: The study herein has filled a gap regarding toxocariasis in vulnerable populations and suggests food insecurity as a socioeconomic indicator for Toxocara spp. seropositivity in recycling workers. Furthermore, recycling workers are at higher risk of infection and, as such, need to be prioritized in healthcare programs. Full article

Pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater from medical facilities and households can cause ecological damage. In this study, 100% natural fruit peels, namely lime (LP), orange (OP), kiwi (KP), fig (FP), and pomegranate (PP) peels, were investigated as low-cost adsorbents for the removal of diclofenac (DCF), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and amoxicillin (AMX), an antibiotic, from aqueous solution. The goal of this study was to use food waste as a source for wastewater treatment. According to the results, natural fruit peels were effective for DCF removal (C0 = 100 mg/L), with KP achieving a high removal efficiency (98.9%, 345.18 mg/g) at pH 3.0). The most promising materials (OP, KP, and FP) were further modified using MgO suspension followed by alkaline treatment with NaOH (OP-Mg, KP-Mg, and FP-Mg), resulting in enhanced performance for AMX removal (65.1%, 286.61 mg/g at pH 3.0, C0 = 50 mg/L). The maximum short-term uptake capacity was reached within 15 min, and kinetic and isotherm models were applied to describe the adsorption data. The Langmuir expression gave the better description of the concentration dependence for both pharmaceuticals, at equilibrium for DCF and at a fixed contact time of 15 min for AMX. SEM, FTIR and XRD characterization techniques provided information on the adsorption mechanisms, as well as confirming the successful modification with Μg. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that natural fruit peels were effective in the removal of pharmaceuticals and at the same time offer potential cost and environmental advantages through waste valorization and relatively simple preparation, supporting the principles of the circular economy, through the utilization of food waste as sustainable materials for water treatment. Food price inflation provides an important economic context for consumer behaviour related to food; however, its impact on sustainable and responsible food consumption remains understudied. This cross-sectional study analyzed self-reported changes in food-related behaviour among Polish consumers during a period of strong upward pressure on food prices and identified demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with the intensity of these changes. In June 2023, a CAWI survey was conducted among a quota sample of 1000 adults in Poland, representative in terms of age and gender. To assess changes in the analyzed areas of food-related behaviours (food procurement, shopping planning, meal preparation, use of food service establishments, consumption of selected food products, and food waste), the Friedman test and the Wilcoxon test with Holm correction were used. To examine the relationship between the reported changes and the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, a synthetic change-intensity index was constructed based on 52 items covering the six behavioural domains. The significance of the relationship was tested using Pearson’s chi-square test and ordinal logistic regression. Respondents reported changes in all areas analyzed. A decline in the consumption of selected food groups was observed, including fresh fruits and vegetables and fish, with the largest decline in consumption noted for alcoholic beverages. The extent of these changes varied significantly according to characteristics such as age, place of residence, employment status, source of income, and income level. The results indicate that high food price pressures were accompanied by multidimensional changes in consumer food-related behaviours, including more frugal management of food resources and reduced consumption of certain food products. These results underscore the importance of maintaining economic access to nutritionally dense foods, particularly among economically vulnerable households. Full article

Food is always at risk of becoming waste, with household refrigerator practices either slowing or hastening this process. While household food waste has received growing scholarly attention, the interplay of human behavior, refrigerator use, and packaging (HRP) remains underexplored, as research typically examines these elements in isolation rather than their everyday entanglement. To address this gap, this study conceptualizes HRP as a co-constitutive design system and integrates a scoping literature review with qualitative fieldwork in 24 Swedish and international households. Photo-elicitation was used to document real refrigerator organization and storage conditions, while semi-structured interviews (n = 12) captured participants’ routines, decision-making, and interpretations of stored food and packaging. The empirical material was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in domestic food storage practices. The analysis reveals two key findings: (1) the refrigerator must be recognized as a critical contextual and ethical factor in both packaging design and domestic food waste studies; and (2) packaging’s communicative functions often collapse after purchase, limiting its ability to guide storage, visibility, and timely consumption. By framing HRP as dynamically interlinked, the study introduces a new analytical lens on household food waste and calls for sustainable design strategies that better support waste-reducing practices. Microplastic contamination has become a major environmental health concern because of its widespread occurrence and potential risks to human health. Although environmental health literacy (EHL) is recognized as an important determinant of health-related decision-making, evidence regarding its influence on behaviors that reduce potential microplastic exposure remains limited, particularly in riverine communities of developing countries. This study assessed EHL, environmental health behaviors associated with potential microplastic exposure, and factors associated with these behaviors among urban residents living along the Mekong River in Thailand. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 adults in Mueang Nakhon Phanom District, Thailand, between October and December 2024 using multistage random sampling. Face-to-face interviews were performed using a content-validated questionnaire assessing six EHL domains and environmental health behaviors related to microplastic exposure. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with poor environmental health behaviors. Overall, 41.7% of participants demonstrated good environmental health behaviors, whereas 58.3% exhibited poor behaviors. Participants had a moderate level of EHL (mean score, 2.30 ± 0.46), with decision-making representing the weakest domain. Insufficient EHL was strongly associated with poor environmental health behaviors (AOR = 8.06, 95% CI: 2.86–10.04; p < 0.001). Additional factors associated with poor environmental health behaviors included consumption of untreated river or other water sources, no physician visit during the previous month, age older than 60 years, and obtaining aquatic foods through self-capture, whereas trade occupation was associated with lower odds of poor behaviors. These findings support community-based EHL programs led by local authorities and public health practitioners that strengthen critical appraisal and decision-making skills, provide accessible and evidence-based information on microplastic risks, and promote practical actions such as reducing single-use plastics and improving household waste management. Households have been reported to account for more than a third of food waste (FW) generated in the most developed and high-income countries. Despite this, there remains a limited understanding of the behavioural and sociodemographic factors driving household food waste (HFW) generation in most countries, including the Republic of Ireland (ROI). This study therefore examined how behavioural practices and sociodemographic characteristics independently and interactively influence HFW generation in the ROI. Data from a national online survey (n = 966 households; 3163 individuals) were analysed using hierarchical quantile regression. Households with children (Mixed households) reported the highest HFW (1177 g/household/week), and single-adult households recorded the highest per capita median waste (females = 596.0 g/cap/week and males = 496.5 g/cap/week). Behavioural factors were stronger predictors than sociodemographic characteristics. Reliance on date labels was the strongest predictor of HFW, associated with an additional 239 g/week. Each additional weekly shopping trip was associated with 140 g/week more waste, whereas using a shopping list was associated with 42 g/week less waste. Some effects were moderated by sociodemographic factors: reliance on date labels was more strongly associated with waste among adults aged 18–24, and shopping frequency more strongly associated with waste in middle-income households. The findings point to the value of reforming date labelling, supporting more planned shopping, and encouraging the active reuse of leftovers, with attention to differences across household groups. The findings also have direct implications for Ireland’s obligations under SDG 12.3 and the EU Waste Framework Directive. Full article

Household food waste represents a major environmental, economic and social challenge, particularly in developing countries where empirical evidence remains limited. To address this gap, this study extends the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by simultaneously incorporating sustainable marketing and food-related lifestyle, providing a more comprehensive framework for explaining consumers’ intentions to reduce household food waste in the Tunisian context. Data were collected through a survey of 919 consumers across four Tunisian cities and analyzed using a structural equation model. The results show that attitude is the strongest predictor of food waste reduction intention, while subjective norms influence intention indirectly through attitude and perceived behavioral control. Sustainable marketing positively enhances both attitude and perceived behavioral control, whereas food-related lifestyle negatively affects attitude and behavioral intentions. The findings also indicate that stronger intentions to reduce food waste could encourage more sustainable food-related lifestyles. By integrating marketing, sensory and social meal lifestyle-related determinants into the TPB framework, this study advances understanding of household food waste behavior in an under-researched developing country context and provides practical insights for designing interventions that combine awareness raising with food management practices to promote sustainable household consumption. Food waste is a global issue with significant environmental, economic, and human health impacts. The largest share of household and retail food waste comes from fresh produce, much of which is still edible at the time of disposal. While previous work has investigated shelf-life extension technologies applied to freshly harvested produce, almost no studies have investigated the efficacy of these treatments when applied to post-retail produce. This study investigated the effect of low-dose UV-C exposure and chitosan coating on the quality, microbial load, and visual acceptance of post-retail strawberries. Strawberries were assigned to low-dose UV-C, chitosan dip, or one of three control conditions (no treatment, water dip, or vinegar dip). Strawberries were analyzed for texture, color, weight, decay percent, yeast and mold counts, and fungal presence via qPCR. Consumer acceptance was determined using an online survey with photographs. Chitosan, but not UV-C, delayed decay by approximately 1 day and lowered yeast and mold counts below limits of detection while having minimal impact on texture and color. Chitosan-treated strawberries were more visually accepted by consumers by Day 1 and Day 2, indicated by higher liking scores and greater association with safety and willingness to eat. UV-C exposure at the low fluence applied did not reduce decay or microbial load during storage. Prolonging the acceptability of post-retail produce provides a meaningful target for reducing household and retail food waste. Full article

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and direct measurement of waste are the gold standards for evaluating food waste interventions. This pilot RCT explored the effects of a 3-week tailored informational–enablement intervention to reduce the causes and amount of fruit and vegetable waste in households in Santiago, Chile. Households were randomized to intervention (n = 23) or control (n = 23). Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, fruit and vegetable consumption, and perceived causes of waste were assessed by questionnaire. Avoidable waste was quantified by direct weighing at baseline, post-intervention, and observational follow-up. At baseline, median (25th–75th percentiles) avoidable waste was 153 (128–180) (g/day per person for fruits and 102 (95–124) for vegetables. Purchase was the most frequently reported cause of waste. At post-intervention, the change in vegetable waste (Δwaste) was lower in the intervention vs. the control group (−6 (−9, −3) vs. 3 (−5, 10) g/day per person; p = 0.0129), without difference for fruits (p = 0.0895). Observational follow-up showed decreases in avoidable fruit and vegetable waste from post-intervention to month 6 (p < 0.001) and to month 9 (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the tailored informational–enablement intervention reduced avoidable vegetable waste in the studied Chilean households. Follow-up measurements could contribute to capturing longer-term changes in fruit and vegetable waste. Full article

Avoidable household food waste can arise at multiple stages of household food management, including storage, preparation, cooking, consumption, and post-cooking storage. It may also be associated with upstream food access and purchasing conditions. Using a purpose-designed 2017 survey of 204 rural households in Shandong, China, this study combines three-day household tracking with direct weighing of avoidable edible food waste. A food-purchase transport motorization index (TMI) is constructed from food-category-specific transport modes weighted by household consumption shares. Its association with observed food waste is examined using Tobit models, interval shape tests, and sensitivity analyses. TMI exhibits a nonlinear statistical association with total food waste: fitted waste increases at lower motorization levels and tends to decrease at higher levels, although formal interval tests do not confirm an inverted-U relationship for total waste. The nonlinear pattern is clearest for storage waste, whereas plate waste shows a positive linear association. TMI is significantly associated with waste occurrence, but its association with the amount wasted among households with positive waste is not statistically significant. Purchase frequency strengthens the association between TMI and waste occurrence, whereas dietary diversity shows no comparable moderating role. Associations are more pronounced for non-perishable and plant-based foods than for perishable or animal-based foods. These findings provide short-term micro-level evidence from a rural transport-transition setting. Full article

People in the late adolescent and young adult age range contribute disproportionately to household food waste. However, research on this age group often focuses on university students or treats young adults as a homogeneous group: students in vocational education receive less research attention. Using an exploratory approach this study aims to understand the lived experiences, everyday practices and perspectives of vocational students regarding food waste. It examines how these students experience, explain, and manage food waste in their everyday lives, and how these practices are shaped by capability, opportunity, and motivation. Using the COM-B framework as an analytical lens, we analyzed interviews with 26 students and a survey amongst 188 students. We find that students frequently waste small portions of food across multiple everyday contexts. Their food practices are strongly shaped both by their dependence on the parental household and to a lesser extent by exposure to professional food-service environments through vocational education and part-time work. Hence, rather than resulting primarily from intentional disregard for sustainability, food waste often emerges from routine practices, changing schedules, convenience, and uncertainty surrounding food safety and storage. Household food waste remains a huge challenge for solid waste management in municipalities worldwide, especially in the Global South. Existing studies that measure food waste (FW) in cities are scarce, have limited geographic scope, and have limited timeframes. In that direction, the current investigation provides data on the FW composition of nine regions of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), based on a three-year sampling across 155 neighborhoods. Waste samples were collected from 2021 to 2023. In total, about 24,038 kg (fresh weight) was analyzed. Results showed that FW accounts for an average of 47.7 ± 1.9% of household waste in the study period. The FW composition in the city of Rio de Janeiro ranged from 60.3–76.5% for fruits, vegetables, and salads, 15.0–25.1% for fine aggregate (small-sized food residues < 2.54 cm, like rice, beans, grains, and fragmented food particles), and 3.2–5.8% for proteins (discarded animal-based protein foods like chicken and meat). The chi-square goodness-of-fit test was applied to evaluate whether the FW composition in each of the nine regions differed from the mean FW composition of the Rio de Janeiro municipality. The findings revealed statistically significant differences (p-value < 0.05) in the average FW fractions in specific regions and years compared with the city’s average composition. Thus, one of the key takeaways of this investigation was that the percentages of discharged food waste fractions vary over time and across locations, even within the same municipality. The present research took a first step toward understanding the food waste problem in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and underscores the importance of monitoring food waste data to guide the development of locally specific strategies for sustainable urban food systems, including waste prevention, recycling, and food recovery. Background: Food insecurity remains a major public health challenge in many low- and middle-income countries, where environmental and socioeconomic conditions influence household access to adequate, safe, and nutritious food. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between environmental and socioeconomic factors and household food security in Riobamba, Ecuador. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 382 households using the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA), complemented by structured and Likert-scale questions addressing agricultural production practices, food handling, waste management, and food choice and dietary diversity. Household food security status was classified according to the standard ELCSA scoring procedure and subsequently grouped into categories representing adequate or inadequate household food access and consumption. Binary Logit and Probit models were estimated to identify factors associated with household food security. Results: The Probit model showed slightly better predictive performance (classification accuracy = 73.56%; Pseudo R2 = 0.2729; LR χ2 = 143.94; p < 0.01). Household income was the strongest predictor of food security status (Logit coefficient = 1.1977; p < 0.01). Among the environmental variables, agricultural production practices (β = 0.8649; p < 0.01), food handling practices (β = 0.3714; p < 0.05), and food choice and dietary diversity (β = 0.6479; p < 0.01) were positively associated with adequate household food access and consumption, whereas waste management practices were not significantly associated. Household size and gender were also significantly associated with food security outcomes. Conclusions: These findings indicate that household food security in urban Ecuadorian settings is associated with both environmental and socioeconomic conditions. Policies promoting sustainable agricultural practices, safe food handling, dietary diversity, and socioeconomic well-being may contribute to strengthening household food security and nutrition. Background/Objectives: Consumption of dairy products and plant-based dairy alternatives (PBDAs) can be examined within broader configurations of food-related orientations rather than as isolated product choices. This study aimed to identify food-related consumer segments based on food involvement, attention to on-pack product information, and sustainability-related food-choice orientations, and to characterise these segments in relation to reported consumption frequencies of dairy products, PBDAs, and meat, fish and legume dishes, as well as health-oriented food-choice criteria. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1508 Polish adults responsible or co-responsible for household food purchasing. Principal component analysis was used to identify underlying food-related dimensions, and the retained component scores were entered into a two-step cluster analysis. Differences between clusters were examined using chi-square tests and one-way ANOVA. Results: Six dimensions were retained: sustainable and ethical choices, meat reduction, food involvement, product-information importance, shopping-list use and food-waste avoidance. Five clusters were identified, reflecting distinct configurations of these dimensions. PBDA and legume-dish consumption were most frequent in the sustainability and meat-reduction-oriented cluster, although dairy products and meat remained part of the reported diet. High food involvement and label/quality attention co-occurred with a more conventional consumption pattern, whereas PBDA and legume-dish consumption were lowest in more conventional and lower-sustainability clusters. The low-engagement cluster showed a more selective pattern of PBDA and legume-dish consumption. Conclusions: This study identified five food-related consumer segments and showed that reported PBDA consumption was embedded in heterogeneous dietary patterns rather than functioning as a simple substitute for dairy products. These findings indicate that reported PBDA consumption is segment-dependent and cannot be assumed to reflect reduced dairy consumption or a consistently sustainability- or health-oriented dietary pattern. Peri-urban regions around Southeast Asian megacities connect agriculture, markets, food-service facilities, households, and municipal waste systems, yet comparable data for individual waste streams are often unavailable. This study presents a screening framework for selecting the first organic waste streams and node types to measure in Tangerang Raya, Indonesia, before treatment performance data are available. The framework complements, rather than replaces, city scale circularity monitoring, life cycle assessment, and technology selection tools. Public and institutional data were screened by evidence class and temporal and spatial compatibility. The core Peri-Urban Organic Waste Circularity Readiness Index (PU-OCRI) evaluates five intrinsic criteria: feedstock concentration, source separation readiness, treatment pre-screening compatibility, institutional readiness, and the safety/quality gate. Scores represent collective author judgments linked to a criterion level evidence trail; they have not been independently rated by local stakeholders or empirically calibrated. Korea linked support is assessed separately and cannot affect the index. Available evidence included 3248.1 t of large chili production in Kabupaten Tangerang in 2024, 798,406 t yr−1 of reported potential municipal-waste generation in Kota Tangerang in 2024, and a planning-based estimate that 52.89% of non-residential waste in Kota Tangerang Selatan was biogenic organic material. Under equal weights, market-linked organics scored 76/100 and garden and landscape organics 72; production-side residues and household food waste each scored 56, and mixed residual waste scored 32. In 100,000 weight only simulations, market linked organics ranked first in 65.9% of runs and garden and landscape organics in 31.2%. When each score was allowed to vary by one point and sampled together with the weights, the corresponding first-rank frequencies were 50.7% and 40.7%. These results define a provisional paired audit hypothesis, not evidence of superior circular-economy performance. A required 8–12-week comparison of market/food-service and garden/landscape nodes will apply predefined criteria for mass stability, contamination, safety, treatment feasibility, cost, and operator and stakeholder participation before scores are updated or any treatment or scale-up decision is made. Korea-linked cooperation is limited to digital logging, training, QA/QC, and pilot-operation protocols. Data provenance is explicit: the 798,406 t yr−1 value is the issuing agency’s population × per-capita estimate, whereas 52.89% is an author calculated category sum (kitchen + garden + wood) used only as a screening proxy, not as a direct stream level measurement or the plan’s official aggregate organic fraction.
