This article introduces a novel decentralized compliance control technique designed to manage the behavior of multi-axle heavy vehicles equipped with electro-hydraulic actuator suspension systems on uneven terrains. To address the challenges of controller design complexity and network communication burden in large-scale active suspension systems for multi-axle heavy vehicles, the decentralized scheme proposed in this paper decomposes the overall vehicle control problem into decentralized compliance control tasks for multiple electro-hydraulic actuator suspension subsystems (MEHASS), each responding to road disturbances. The position-based compliance control strategy consists of an outer-loop generalized impedance controller (GIC) and an inner-loop position controller. The GIC, which offers explicit force-tracking performance, is employed to define the dynamic interaction between each wheel and the uneven road surface, thereby generating the vertical trajectory for the MEHASS. This design effectively reduces vertical vibration transmission to the vehicle chassis, improving ride comfort. To handle external disturbances and enhance control accuracy, the position control employs a nonsingular fast integral terminal sliding mode controller. Furthermore, a three-axle heavy vehicle prototype with electro-hydraulic actuator suspension is developed for on-road driving experiments. The effectiveness of the proposed control method in enhancing ride comfort is demonstrated through comparative experiments. Full article

The strong coupling of the six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) electro-hydraulic Stewart parallel mechanism manifests as adjusting the elongation of one actuator potentially inducing motion in multiple degrees of freedom of the platform, i.e., a change in pose; this pose change leads to time-varying and unbalanced load forces (disturbance inputs) on the six hydraulic actuators; unbalanced load forces exacerbate the time-varying nature of the acceleration and velocity of the six hydraulic actuators, causing instantaneous changes in the pressure and flow rate of the electro-hydraulic system, thereby enhancing the pressure–flow nonlinearity of the hydraulic actuators. Considering the advantage of artificial intelligence in learning hidden patterns within complex environments (strong coupling and strong nonlinearity), this paper proposes a reinforcement learning motion control algorithm based on deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). Firstly, the static/dynamic coordinate system transformation matrix of the electro-hydraulic Stewart parallel mechanism is established, and the inverse kinematic model and inverse dynamic model are derived. Secondly, a DDPG algorithm framework incorporating an Actor–Critic network structure is constructed, designing the agent’s state observation space, action space, and a position-error-based reward function, while employing experience replay and target network mechanisms to optimize the training process. Finally, a simulation model is built on the MATLAB 2024b platform, applying variable-amplitude variable-frequency sinusoidal input signals to all 6 degrees of freedom for dynamic characteristic analysis and performance evaluation under the strong coupling and strong nonlinear operating conditions of the electro-hydraulic Stewart parallel mechanism; the DDPG agent dynamically adjusts the proportional, integral, and derivative gains of six PID controllers through interactive trial-and-error learning. Simulation results indicate that compared to the traditional PID control algorithm, the DDPG-PID control algorithm significantly improves the tracking accuracy of all six hydraulic cylinders, with the maximum position error reduced by over 40.00%, achieving high-precision tracking control of variable-amplitude variable-frequency trajectories in all 6 degrees of freedom for the electro-hydraulic Stewart parallel mechanism. As critical infrastructure, hydropower dams require efficient and accurate detection of underwater structural surface defects to ensure their safety. This paper presents the design and implementation of a robotic control system specifically developed for underwater dam inspection in hydropower stations, aiming to enhance the robot’s operational capability under harsh hydraulic conditions. The study includes the hardware design of the control system and the development of a surface human–machine interface unit. At the software level, a modular architecture is adopted to ensure real-time performance and reliability. The solution employs a hierarchical architecture comprising hardware sensing, real-time interaction protocols, and an adaptive controller, and the integrated algorithm combining a fixed-time disturbance observer with adaptive super-twisting controller compensates for complex hydrodynamic forces. To validate the system’s effectiveness, field tests were conducted at the Baihetan Hydropower Station. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control system enables stable and precise dam inspection, with standard deviations of multi-degree-of-freedom automatic control below 0.5 and hovering control below 0.1. These findings confirm the system’s feasibility and superiority in performing high-precision, high-stability inspection tasks in complex underwater environments of real hydropower dams. The developed system provides reliable technical support for intelligent underwater dam inspection and holds significant practical value for improving the safety and maintenance of major hydraulic infrastructure. The moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method is employed to investigate the dynamic response of a wave energy converter (WEC) buoy subjected to dam-break flows. The buoy is connected to a hydraulic power take-off (PTO) system equipped with an accumulator, enabling it to capture wave energy. First, the MPS method is validated by comparison with experimental results, demonstrating its accuracy in simulating violent interactions between dam-break flows and the buoy. Subsequently, numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the influence of different PTO forces and buoy positions on the heave motion, fluid forces and captured power of the buoy. The results indicate that PTO force exerts a significant influence on heave motion, captured power and vertical fluid force while having a relatively minor effect on the horizontal fluid force. In addition, the maximum power that the buoy can capture increases as its distance from the wall decreases. Notably, the maximum average captured power of the buoy located near a wall can be five times higher than that of a buoy far away from the wall, indicating that a vertical wall can significantly increase the efficiency of nearshore WEC devices. These findings could provide valuable insights for the design, optimization and operation of nearshore WEC devices. Full article

To investigate the internal flow characteristics of particles during hydraulic lifting in deep-sea mining risers, this study developed a three-dimensional curved riser multiphase flow model based on the Eulerian–Eulerian framework and the RNG k-ε turbulence model. The effects of particle distribution and pressure loss in the curved section, as well as the influence of curvature radius, were analyzed. Results indicate that particle distributions take concave circular or crescent-shaped patterns, becoming more uniform with larger curvature radii. Pressure on the extrados is consistently greater than on the intrados, with pressure loss increasing in the bend and peaking at the midpoint. A larger curvature radius leads to greater total pressure loss but lower frictional loss. Additionally, the bend experiences a restoring force toward the vertical position, which increases as the curvature radius decreases. Full article

Seepage erosion around sheet pile walls represents a critical failure mechanism in geotechnical engineering, yet the underlying mechanisms governing the onset of erosion remain poorly understood. This study presents a comprehensive multi-scale investigation employing a coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-discrete element method (DEM) to elucidate the onset mechanisms of seepage erosion in gap-graded soils with varying the fines content under different hydraulic gradients. The results demonstrate that increasing the fines content enhances the overall erosion resistance, as evidenced by reduced particle mobilization and eroded mass ratio. Particle tracking analysis reveals that the fines content fundamentally influences the spatial distribution of the erosion. Specimens with low fines content exhibit distributed erosion throughout the domain, while specimens with higher fines content show concentrated erosion around the sheet pile wall and downstream regions. Micromechanical analysis of local contact fabric and contact forces indicates that this spatial heterogeneity stems from the mechanical coordination number and mechanical redundancy, characterized by the reduced magnitudes of these parameters for the region with lower erosion resistance. These findings establish that the fines content governs both global erosion resistance and spatial erosion patterns, providing essential insights for optimizing soil gradation design and advancing fundamental understanding of seepage erosion mechanisms. This study investigates cross-border cascading hazards and infrastructure vulnerabilities in the Sava River Basin, a seismically active and flood-prone region spanning the Slovenia–Croatia border. Conducted within the CROSScade project, the research focuses on assessing cross-border hazards and the vulnerabilities of levees and bridges. Key earthquake and flood scenarios were identified using advanced hydraulic and seismic modelling, forming the basis for evaluating the cascading effects of these events, including the potential failure of hydropower plants and associated flood protection systems. The analysis reveals that levees are particularly vulnerable to failure during the recession phase of flooding that follows an earthquake. At the same time, bridges are primarily affected by seismic loading, with minimal structural impact from flood forces. These findings underscore the pressing need for enhanced cross-border collaboration, updated design standards, and the reinforcement of critical infrastructure. The study provides essential insights for multi-hazard resilience planning and emphasises the importance of integrated risk assessments in managing cascading disaster impacts across national boundaries. Rapid pressure fluctuations—known as hydraulic transients—occur during valve operations or load changes in turbines and pumps. The presence of biofouling, particularly caused by the golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei), can intensify these effects and compromise the structural integrity of pressurized systems. This study experimentally evaluated the influence of such biofouling on pressure peaks during transient events in forced conduits. A hydraulic test rig was developed using PVC pipes with nominal diameters of 2½”, 3”, and 4”, tested under both clean conditions and with simulated biofouling printed in 3D, replicating mussel morphology. Results showed that, under the same initial flow rates, pressure peaks in biofouled pipes were significantly higher than in clean ones, especially in smaller diameters. To mitigate structural risks, the downstream shut-off valve closure time was modulated using a needle valve, effectively reducing peak pressures to levels closer to design limits. It is concluded that L. fortunei colonization alters transient hydraulic behavior and should be considered in the design and operation of systems vulnerable to biofouling, particularly in critical infrastructure such as water supply networks and hydroelectric power plants. This study investigated the hydraulic characteristics of a self-rotating flood barrier (SRFB) by performing laboratory experiments. The SRFB is proposed as a secure solution to withstand both waves and sudden water level rise, thereby protecting the coastal area behind it. The SRFB is designed to rotate and rise automatically by buoyancy when the water level exceeds a certain threshold or waves start to overtop the crest level of the caisson, where the barrier is enclosed. The barrier begins to rise when the chamber is filled with enough water for the buoyancy force to exceed its own weight. The performance of the structure was tested under various regular wave conditions at different water depths. Pressure transducers were placed along the front face of the barrier to measure the wave pressures acting on it. The barrier’s angular displacement was also identified using synchronized video footage during the measurements. The results showed that the overall magnitude of the measured pressures increased with water depth due to the larger volume of water inflow from overtopping waves. During the rise in the barrier, the pressure profiles dynamically varied with the rotation angle as the pattern of water flow into the chamber changed depending on the test cases. Analysis results showed how the pressures are distributed along the barrier at the moment of peak wave force. These findings would provide fundamental information for estimating design wave forces on the structure. Full article

This article presents a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study and substantiation of the hydraulic parameters of a prototype multi-gear pump. The proposed pump design, which features one drive gear and four driven gears, aims to address the common disadvantages of traditional gear pumps, including radial force imbalance, uneven flow, high acoustic noise, and increased fluid leakage. Tests of the prototype multi-stage pump were conducted on a specialized test stand in the “Hydraulics” workshop of “Hansa-Flex Hydraulik Almaty” LLP. Experimental analysis, supported by theoretical calculations, established the optimal operating speed range for the prototype to be between 900 and 1450 rpm, with the volumetric efficiency remaining stable between 70% and 88% when using VMGZ hydraulic oil (45 cSt). A significant deterioration in performance, including a sharp drop in volumetric efficiency to 30% and a decrease in the pressure generated, was observed at rotational speeds below 900 rpm due to an increase in internal leaks. In addition, this study examined the effect of kinematic viscosity, which revealed a 15–20% decrease in performance and power when using a fluid with lower viscosity (15 cSt) with a slight increase in noise level. This study also examines in detail the linear relationship between useful power and pressure in the system and analyzes noise characteristics under various operating conditions. Full article

A large eddy simulation (LES) model, integrated with the volume of fluid (VOF) method, was employed to investigate hydrodynamic forces and vorticity distribution around a circular cylinder in a narrow channel. The simulated surface pressure and drag coefficient closely matched the experimental results from flume testing. The ratio of cylinder diameter to channel width is defined as the blockage ratio (Br). The effects of blockage on hydrodynamic loadings and vortex structures around the cylinder were examined through a series of numerical simulations. The results reveal that blockage ratios exceeding 20% significantly alter key flow characteristics, including the upstream and circumferential pressure coefficients, drag coefficient, lateral force coefficient, and Strouhal number. Higher blockage ratios enhance near-wall vortex formation and intensify shear layers. The vertical (Ωy), streamwise (Ωx), and spanwise (Ωz) vorticity components all increase with Br, leading to stronger and more spatially extensive vortex structures near the bed, particularly in the form of horizontally elongated vorticity structures. These changes have important implications for structural stability and local scour. Overall, the findings contribute to the optimization of hydraulic structure design by highlighting the effects of channel confinement on flow-induced forces. Full article

Due to increased precipitation intensity and sea-level rise, low-lying coastal roads are increasingly vulnerable to subbase saturation. Widely applied lumped hydrological approaches cannot accurately represent time and space-varying groundwater levels in some highly conductive coastal soils, calling for more sophisticated tools. This study assesses the suitability of the Gridded Surface Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis model (GSSHA) for representing hydrological processes and groundwater dynamics in a unique coastal roadway setting in Alabama. A high-resolution model was developed to assess a 2 km road segment and was calibrated for hydraulic conductivity and aquifer bottom levels using observed groundwater level (GWL) data. The model configuration included a fixed groundwater tidal boundary representing Mobile Bay, a refined land cover classification, and an extreme precipitation event simulation representing Hurricane Sally. Results indicated good agreement between modeled and observed groundwater levels, particularly during short-duration high-intensity events, with NSE values reaching up to 0.83. However, the absence of dynamic tidal forcing limited its ability to replicate certain fine-scale groundwater fluctuations. During the Hurricane Sally simulation, over two-thirds of the segment remained saturated for over 6 h, and some locations exceeded 48 h of pavement saturation. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating shallow groundwater processes in hydrologic modeling for coastal roads. This replicable modeling framework may assist DOTs in identifying critical roadway segments to improve drainage infrastructure in order to increase resiliency. Full article

Silty clay generated the highest amount of frost heave and steepest vertical stress gradients due to its high-water retention and strong capillary forces. Fine sand, on the other hand, produced a minimal amount of frost heave and a polarized vertical stress distribution. The study also revealed that vapor flux is more noticeable in freezing fine sand, while silty clay produces the greatest water flux between the frozen and unfrozen zones. The study also assesses the impact of soil properties including the saturated hydraulic conductivity, the particle thermal conductivity, and particle heat capacity on the frost-induced phenomena. Findings show that reducing the saturated hydraulic conductivity has a greater impact on mitigating frost heave than other variations in thermal properties. Silty clay is most affected by these changes, particularly near the soil surface, while fine sand shows less noticeable responses. Full article

Deep drilling and horizontal wells, as important means of unconventional oil and gas development, face problems with the high energy consumption but low removal efficiency of traditional well washing equipment, the uneven cleaning of horizontal well intervals, and an insufficient degree of automation. This paper proposes a novel hydraulic drive well washing device which consists of two main units. The wellbore cleaning unit comprises a hydraulic drive cutting–flushing module, a well cleaning mode-switching module, and a filter storage module. The unit uses hydraulic and mechanical forces to perform combined cleaning to prevent mud and sand from settling. By controlling the flow direction of the well washing fluid, it can directly switch between normal and reverse washing modes in the downhole area, and at the same time, it can control the working state of corresponding modules. The assembly control unit includes the chain lifting module and the arm assembly module, which can lift and move the device through the chain structure, allow for the rapid assembly of equipment through the use of a mechanical arm, and protect the reliability of equipment through the use of a centering structure. The device converts some of the hydraulic power into mechanical force, effectively improving cleaning and plugging removal efficiency, prolonging the downhole continuous working time of equipment, reducing manual operation requirements, and comprehensively improving cleaning efficiency and energy utilization efficiency. Study on Solid-Liquid Two-Phase Flow and Wear Characteristics in Multistage Centrifugal Pumps Based on the Euler-Lagrange Approach

Multistage centrifugal pumps, owing to their high head characteristics, are commonly applied in domains like subsea resource exploitation and groundwater extraction. However, the wear of flow passage components caused by solid particles in the fluid severely threatens equipment lifespan and system safety. To investigate the influence of solid-liquid two-phase flow on pump performance and wear, this study conducted numerical simulations of the solid-liquid two-phase flow within multistage centrifugal pumps based on the Euler–Lagrange approach and the Tabakoff wear model. The simulation results showed good agreement with experimental data. Under the design operating condition, compared to the clear water condition, the efficiency under the solid-liquid two-phase flow condition decreased by 1.64%, and the head coefficient decreased by 0.13. As the flow rate increases, particle momentum increases, the particle Stokes number increases, inertial forces are enhanced, and the coupling effect with the fluid weakens, leading to an increased impact intensity on flow passage components. This results in a gradual increase in the wear area of the impeller front shroud, back shroud, pressure side, and the peripheral casing. Under the same flow rate condition, when particles enter the pump chamber of a subsequent stage from a preceding stage, the fluid, after being rectified by the return guide vane, exhibits a more uniform flow pattern and reduced turbulence intensity. The particle Stokes number in the subsequent stage is smaller than that in the preceding stage, weakening inertial effects and enhancing the coupling effect with the fluid. This leads to a reduced impact intensity on flow passage components, resulting in a smaller wear area of these components in the subsequent stage compared to the preceding stage. This research offers critical theoretical foundations and practical guidelines for developing wear-resistant multistage centrifugal pumps in solid-liquid two-phase flow applications, with direct implications for extending service life and optimizing hydraulic performance.
