Opening titles are more than introductory devices supporting the film they have been produced for; they are artistic and cultural artefacts with a powerful visual identity. Among the most emblematic figures in this design field, the graphic and motion designer Saul Bass (1920–1996) pioneered an approach that redefined the identity, the design, and the experience of cinematic title sequences, opening a path of experimentation aimed at bridging visual communication, moving images, stylistic innovation, and aesthetic synaesthesia, through a combination of sound, movement, and image into a single expressive unit. This article investigates Bass’s contribution through a historical-critical and comparative lens, reconstructing the network of artistic and technological influences that shaped his design philosophy. It analyzes a selection of Bass’s title sequences, highlights his connection to European modernism, and identifies the seeds of postmodern culture in several aspects of Bass’s work such as the merging of principles coming from design and animation studies, the ambition for technological experimentation, and the openness towards a mass audience. By framing Bass’s creative legacy as a form of visual heritage, the article examines the ways in which his kinetic typography and moving compositions can be, therefore, recognized as resources for art historians, media scholars, designers, and visual communication theorists to track down the first and impactful aesthetic and narrative experiments conducted in the postmodern and contemporary motion graphic design field. This study examines the influence of mass media on the career choices of high school students from Brașov County, Romania, with a focus on their underlying motivational factors. Employing a quantitative design, it draws on data from a standardized questionnaire completed by 1314 students from local high schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used in the analysis. While some students identify mass media as a key source of career guidance, documentaries and career fairs are more frequently cited as trusted sources. Students’ perceptions of mass media are ambivalent: 55.1% see it as manipulative, while 41.7% and 24.7% acknowledge its informative and educational roles. Personal motivation emerges as the most significant influence, with 64.8% guided by individual talents and abilities, compared to a lower influence from family or media role models. Correlational analysis highlights the importance of personal development, creativity, and collaboration in career motivation. This study suggests that mass media indirectly shapes students’ aspirations by reinforcing values like social recognition, mobility, and identity. Finally, it reveals a strong link between career interest and expectations for respectful, stable, and growth-oriented work environments, pointing to a pragmatic orientation toward professional sustainability. Thermal wick-debinding, commonly used in low-pressure injection molding, remains challenging due to complex interactions between binder transport, capillary forces, and thermal effects. This study presents a numerical simulation of binder removal kinetics by coupling Darcy’s law with the Phase Transport in Porous Media interface in COMSOL Multiphysics. The model was validated and subsequently used to study the influence of key debinding parameters. Contrary to the Level Set method, which predicts isolated binder clusters, the Multiphase Flow in Porous Media method proposed in this work more accurately reflects the physical behavior of the process, capturing a continuous binder extraction throughout the green part and a uniform binder distribution within the wicking medium. The model successfully predicted the experimentally observed decrease in binder saturation with increasing debinding temperature or time, with deviation limited 3–10 vol. % (attributed to a mandatory brushing operation, which may underestimate the residual binder mass). The model was then used to optimize the debinding process: for a temperature of 100 °C and an inter-part gap distance of 5 mm, the debinding time was minimized to 7 h. These findings highlight the model’s practical utility for process design, offering a valuable tool for determining optimal debinding parameters and improving productivity. Full article

Background/Objectives: Digital food-related videos significantly influence cravings, appetite, and weight outcomes; however, the dynamic neural mechanisms underlying appetite fluctuations during naturalistic viewing remain unclear. This study aimed to identify neural activity patterns associated with moment-to-moment appetite changes during naturalistic food-cue video viewing and to examine their relationships with cravings and weight-related outcomes. Methods: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 58 healthy female participants as they viewed naturalistic food-cue videos. Participants concurrently provided continuous ratings of their appetite levels throughout video viewing. Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM), combined with machine learning regression techniques, was employed to identify distinct neural states reflecting dynamic appetite fluctuations. Findings were independently validated using a shorter-duration food-cue video viewing task. Results: Distinct neural states characterized by heightened activation in default mode and frontoparietal networks consistently corresponded with increases in appetite ratings. Importantly, the higher expression of these appetite-related neural states correlated positively with participants’ Body Mass Index (BMI) and post-viewing food cravings. Furthermore, these neural states mediated the relationship between BMI and food craving levels. Longitudinal analyses revealed that the expression levels of appetite-related neural states predicted participants’ BMI trajectories over a subsequent six-month period. Participants experiencing BMI increases exhibited a significantly greater expression of these neural states compared to those whose BMI remained stable. Conclusions: Our findings elucidate how digital food cues dynamically modulate neural processes associated with appetite. These neural markers may serve as early indicators of obesity risk, offering valuable insights into the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms linking everyday media exposure to food cravings and weight management. This paper analyzes 20th century colloquialization processes in Peninsular Spanish, in line with recent works addressing mass-media colloquialization. Previous studies suggest a change in sports-talk announcing towards a more informal model, which is supported by the incorporation of new linguistic features as well as by the influence of some external changes. In this context, this study delves into the role of discourse markers as a colloquialization parameter, as a growth in their employment has been detected since ca. 1990. To further explore the data, a manually compiled corpus has been transcribed and analyzed: our corpus consists of both radio and TV football-match recordings aired in Spain from 1980 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2024. These two big periods have been subdivided into five-year periods or micro-diachronies to allow for a more detailed analysis. Results reveal a consolidation of the use of discourse markers by sports announcers, contrasting with earlier broadcasts that tended to avoid them or that employed more formal discourse markers, typically related to written, planned discourses. Background/Objectives: Acromegaly is associated with multiple metabolic comorbidities, but the relationship between disease activity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) or cardiovascular risk remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of MASLD and liver fibrosis in patients with acromegaly relative to healthy controls and explore whether disease activity influences these parameters. We also evaluated cardiovascular risk indicators in acromegaly patients. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted between 2000 and 2022, involving 58 acromegaly patients and 58 healthy controls. Patients were classified as active or in biochemical remission. MASLD was assessed using the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, MASLD fibrosis score, body mass index, diabetes (BARD) score, the aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet index (APRI), and the aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio. Cardiovascular evaluation included pulse wave velocity (PWV) and carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT). Results: The median age of the acromegaly group was 47.5 (39–57) years, compared to 42 (40–48) years in the control group (p = 0.041). APRI (p < 0.001), FIB-4 (p < 0.001), MASLD fibrosis score (p < 0.001), and BARD score (p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the acromegaly group. The prevalence of hepatic steatosis was also higher in the acromegaly group (p < 0.001). Diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.015) and PWV (p = 0.012) were significantly higher in the acromegaly group. Conclusions: Acromegaly patients have an increased risk of MASLD and fibrosis, but this risk is unassociated with disease activity. Similarly, cardiovascular risk parameters remain elevated regardless of disease activity. These findings suggest that the systemic effects of acromegaly may persist despite biochemical control. Glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composite plates have gradually attracted more attention because of their repeated molding, higher toughness, higher durability, and fatigue resistance compared to glass fiber reinforced thermosetting composites. In practical engineering applications, composite plates have to undergo bending effect at different angles in corrosive environment of concrete, including bending bars from 0~90°, and stirrups of 90°, which may lead to long-term performance degradation. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the long-term performance of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composite bending plates in an alkali environment. In the current paper, a new bending device is developed to prepare glass fiber reinforced polypropylene bending plates with the bending angles of 60° and 90°. It should be pointed out that the above two bending angles are simulated typical bending bars and stirrups, respectively. The plate is immersed in the alkali solution environment for up to 90 days for long-term exposure. Mechanical properties (tensile properties and shear properties), thermal properties (dynamic mechanical properties and thermogravimetric analysis) and micro-morphology analysis (surface morphology analysis) were systematically designed to evaluate the influence mechanism of bending angle and alkali solution immersion on the long-term mechanical properties. The results show the bending effect leads to the continuous failure of fibers, and the outer fibers break under tension, and the inner fibers buckle under compression, resulting in debonding of the fiber–matrix interface. Alkali solution (OH ions) corrode the surface of glass fiber to form soluble silicate, which is proved by the mass fraction of glass fiber decreased obviously from 79.9% to 73.65% from thermogravimetric analysis. This contributes to the highest degradation ratio of tensile strength was 71.6% (60° bending) and 65.6% (90° bending), respectively, compared to the plate with bending angles of 0°. A high curvature bending angle (such as 90°) leads to local buckling of fibers and plastic deformation of the matrix, forming microcracks and fiber–resin interface bonding at the bending area, which accelerates the chemical erosion and debonding process in the interface area, bringing about an additional maximum 10.56% degradation rate of the shear strength. In addition, the alkali immersion leads to the obvious degradation of storage modulus and thermal decomposition temperature of composite plate. Compared with the other works on the long-term mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene, it can be found that the long-term performance of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites is controlled by the corrosive media type, bending angle and immersion time. The research results will provide durability data for glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composites used in concrete as stirrups. Full article

Heat treatment is a widely employed method for modifying solid wood and has also been extended to veneer-type woods. Owing to the thinness and ease of handling of veneers, the regulation of protective media in heat treatment has not been highly regarded by the industry and is scarcely reported in research. In light of this, in this paper, rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) veneer is taken as the research subject to investigate the influences of heat treatment with hot air (HTHA) and heat treatment with superheated steam (HTSS) at different temperatures on the chemical properties, longitudinal tensile strength, color values, hygroscopicity, thermal degradation performance and microstructure of the wood. The results show that heat treatment alters the chemical properties of wood. Both heat treatments reduce the content of hemicellulose and other components in the veneer, and the characteristic peak of lignin in HTSS is slightly enhanced. The crystallinity of the veneer slightly increases after heat treatment, and the increase in HTSS is greater than that in HTHA. Through scanning electron microscopy, it is observed that heat treatment can effectively remove starch granules in rubber wood veneer, with HTSS being superior to HTHA, and the removal effect increases with the rise in temperature. The longitudinal tensile strength of the veneer decreased by 0.69%, 3.87%, and 24.98% respectively at 135~155 °C HTHA, and by 3.25%, 7.00%, and 18.47% respectively at 135~155 °C HTSS. Both heat treatments reduced the lightness of the veneer and increased the chroma index. At 155 °C, the color difference value of the veneer treated by HTSS was smaller than that treated by HTHA. The effects of heat treatment on the moisture absorption performance of the veneer were different. The equilibrium moisture content of the veneer treated at 135 °C HTHA and 135~155 °C HTSS was lower than that of the untreated material, indicating an improvement in moisture absorption stability. The maximum moisture sorption hysteresis of untreated material is 3.39%. The maximum moisture sorption hysteresis of 135 °C HTHA is not much different from that of untreated material. The values of 145 °C and 155 °C HTHA increase by 8.85% and 9.14% respectively. The values of 135 °C, 145 °C, and 155 °C HTSS increase by 22.42%, 25.37%, and 19.47% respectively. The moisture absorption hysteresis of the veneer increases after heat treatment, and the effect of HTSS improvement is more significant. From the TG and DTG curves, it can be seen that the residual mass percentage of the veneer after heat treatment is higher than that of the untreated material. The residual mass percentage of HTHA at 135 °C, 145 °C, and 155 °C increased by 3.13%, 3.07%, and 2.06% respectively, and that of HTSS increased by 5.14%, 7.21%, and 6.08% respectively. Full article

Rockfall poses a significant hazard in steep terrain, where complex ground interactions cause falling boulders to deviate from straight-line paths. While lateral dispersion is commonly used to describe the distribution of deposited boulders from rockfall events, it does not provide any insight into the complexity of boulder trajectories while in motion. This study introduces tortuosity, a metric typically applied in porous media hydraulic analysis, as a novel approach for quantifying the deviation of rockfall paths from linearity. Using high-resolution UAV-based LiDAR data and RocFall3 (Version 1.017) simulation software, this research investigates the effects of terrain model resolution, boulder shape, and boulder mass on tortuosity values for 20,000 simulated rockfalls on a columnar jointed basalt slope in Boise, ID, USA. Results show that increasing terrain resolution leads to higher tortuosity values due to the increased presence of terrain asperities. Spherical boulders exhibited higher tortuosity than hexagonal ones, and tortuosity decreased with increasing mass for spheres, likely due to their momentum overcoming minor terrain features. Hexagonal boulders, constrained by their angular shape, showed less variability in tortuosity across resolutions and sizes. These findings emphasize the limitations of low-resolution publicly available LiDAR data and highlight the critical influence of accurate boulder representation in simulation models. Full article

Perception and Awareness of Animal Welfare Among Residents of Malta

A representative sample of Maltese citizens (N = 384) was surveyed about their perception and attitude towards animal welfare and animal-friendly foods. Knowledge about animal welfare was self-evaluated as moderate (36%) or good (27%), and mass media (television, web and newspapers) were the primary information source (73%). Dairy cows were perceived as having the highest welfare (average rating 3 on a 1-to-5 scale), while conditions for broilers and pigs were perceived as more critical (average rating 2.7). Respondents consider animal welfare important (64%), the availability of welfare-friendly products in Malta limited (49%), and would support a national animal-friendly label (84%). Although 49% were willing to pay more for animal-friendly products, the accepted price increase was limited (increase below 10% for 37% of respondents, 20% were not willing to pay more and 27% were price-sensitive). Chi-squared analysis showed that the respondents’ profession impacted the support towards an animal welfare label (p < 0.01), with business operators being the least interested. Urban respondents were more critical toward farm animal welfare and more supportive of establishing a national welfare label than rural respondents (p < 0.05). The latter were less convinced that their choices can influence the welfare of farm animals (p < 0.01). Women were more willing to pay for welfare improvements than men (p < 0.01). These findings emphasize a significant concern for animal welfare among respondents, coupled with a moderate willingness to pay. The strong support for a national animal welfare label warrants the question as to whether transparent labelling would allow consumers to translate their sensibility into ethical purchasing behaviour. Background/Objectives: Breastfeeding is widely recognized as the best way to feed infants and has numerous health benefits for both mothers and infants. However, despite its well-documented benefits, breastfeeding rates remain lower than recommended in many parts of the world. This systematic review examines factors that create barriers for mothers trying to breastfeed, covering studies published between 2003 and 2025. Methods: A total of 18 studies were included in this systematic review, selected from the following databases: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, Communication and Mass Media Complete, ERIC, SocINDEX, and CINAHL. Studies were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria, focusing on peer-reviewed articles that examined factors influencing breastfeeding practices. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two reviewers using standardized tools. The review analyzed personal, cultural, economic, and health-related barriers. Results: The analysis revealed multiple barriers to breastfeeding, categorized into personal, sociocultural, economic, and healthcare-related factors. Common challenges included a lack of counseling, latching difficulties, insufficient workplace support, and cultural misconceptions. The heterogeneity of study designs posed challenges in synthesizing the findings. Conclusions: More targeted policies and programs are needed to address these barriers and help mothers succeed in breastfeeding. Improving breastfeeding outcomes worldwide will require better healthcare, social support, and an understanding of cultural influences. Full article

Breast cancer (BC) is globally becoming a great challenge, being both the most diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of death in women. In addition to cancer cells, many bacteria co-inhabit BC, which differ in type and number from the resident microbiota found in healthy breast tissue. While many reports have demonstrated the ability of different bacteria to dysregulate BC’s metabolites, the reciprocal effect of these metabolites on the bacterial microbiota has not yet been investigated. Herein, we assess the effect of conditioned media (CM) from a triple-negative BC cell line (MDA-MB-231) on the metabolic profile of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), an important breast resident Gram-negative bacteria that influence oncogenesis. Optical density and scanning electron microscopes were used to assess the impact of MDA-MB-231-CM (BC-CM) on P. aeruginosa growth and morphological changes, respectively. In addition, liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to identify metabolic changes in P. aeruginosa and their secretomes in response to the BC-CM. The BC-CM significantly suppressed the growth of P. aeruginosa in the log phase and induced concentration-dependent cytopathological changes in their cell walls. The metabolites of P. aeruginosa were dysregulated considerably depending on the time of exposure to the BC-CM. When treated with the BC-CM, P. aeruginosa induced the purine alkaloid spliceostatin (FR901464), a prominent antitumor metabolite. The BC-CM also promoted other P. aeruginosa metabolites such as amino acids, phosphoribosyl-AMP, 2-aminoacetophenone, pyochelin I, guanosine monophosphate, riboflavin, and terpenoids, which are capable of interfering with oncogenesis. Nine of the significantly identified metabolites from the 0–3 h comparison and four of those identified from the 0–6 h comparison have potential roles in influencing cancer cell behavior. Our findings demonstrate the ability of triple-negative BC-CM not only to alter the growth and morphology of P. aeruginosa but also to modulate their metabolic profile. A better understanding of the influence of BC on certain resident breast microbiomes, such as P. aeruginosa, may open a new therapeutic intervention opportunity for the treatment of cancer. Risk Communication and Public Health Emergency Responses During COVID-19 Pandemic in Rural Communities in Kenya: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the crucial role of community preventive behaviors in controlling the virus’ spread. Studies show that people’s risk perceptions and awareness significantly contribute to the containment and prevention of infections by motivating adoption of desired actions and behaviors. This study aimed at assessing the role of risk communication and factors that influenced responses during the COVID-19 pandemic in rural communities in Western Kenya. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a quantitative research approach, collecting data from 806 individuals across Kisumu, Vihiga, and Kakamega counties. Descriptive statistics were used to detail the demographic characteristics of the study population, while logistic regression analysis estimated the associations between risk communication and demographic characteristics on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, compliance with mitigation behaviors, perceived severity, and perceived susceptibility. Results: The results showed that 55% of participants were male and 45% were female, with an average moderate compliance with safety measures (mean = 5.15). A significant portion of participants wore face masks (85.3%), practiced hand hygiene (78.9%), and avoided close contact behaviors (66.6%). Most respondents received information through mass media (86.1%) and health workers (72.9%). Compliance with COVID-19 mitigation measures was highest among those who trusted information from official institutions, health professionals, and mass media, compared to social media, with increased odds of 2.7 times and 2.5 times, respectively. Higher risk perception was significantly associated with older age groups (above 50 years), being male, and working in the private sector. Effective risk communication significantly influenced risk perception, compliance with COVID-19 measures, and vaccination acceptance. Conclusions: The findings suggest that effective risk communication strategies are critical during public health emergencies and hence implications for future public health crises. The results underscore the importance of targeted communication and tailored interventions to improve compliance and vaccine acceptance among different demographic groups, ensuring a more robust public health response during outbreaks and pandemics. The seepage diffusion of cement grouting materials into a sandy medium is influenced by the skeleton’s adsorption and the pore channels’ tortuosity, resulting in heterogeneous retention of cement particles during migration. This study established a theoretical model for the filtration coefficient based on the mass balance equation and linear filtration law. Grouting tests were conducted to determine the density of the cement slurry at various diffusion positions, and the filtration coefficient was calculated using the theoretical model. Results indicate that the filtration coefficient varies dynamically along the diffusion distance rather than remaining constant. The surface filtration range of Grade 42.5 Portland Cement slurry in sample S1 is approximately 30 cm, with a final diffusion distance of 190 cm. In contrast, the surface filtration ranges for the 800 mesh superfine cement in S2 and the 1250 mesh superfine cement in S3 are less than 10 cm, resulting in final diffusion distances of 69 cm and 87 cm, respectively. This demonstrates that a longer surface filtration range in the sand sample corresponds to a farther final diffusion distance of the slurry. Additionally, a larger ratio of sand pore diameter to cement particle size results in a smaller filtration coefficient and a greater slurry diffusion distance. Under a constant water–cement ratio, smaller cement particle sizes are associated with decreased slurry fluidity, which reduces the diffusion of cement slurry within the sandy medium. The research findings provide valuable insights for designing borehole spacing in grouting treatment for sandy media. Full article
