The creep behavior of rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in hydrothermal environments can compromise its long-term stability and load-bearing capacity, potentially leading to deformation or structural failure. Understanding this degradation is critical for ensuring the durability and safety of PVC in engineering applications such as pipelines and building materials. In this study, accelerated hydrothermal aging tests were carried out on PVC under controlled conditions of 60 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH). Short-term tensile creep tests at four different stress levels were conducted both before and after aging. Microstructural changes associated with the PVC’s creep behavior were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other microscopic characterization techniques. These analyses provided a detailed microscopic interpretation of how hydrothermal exposure and applied loads influenced the macroscopic creep performance of the PVC, thereby elucidating the correlation between its macroscopic mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution. By applying the time–stress equivalence principle and the time–aging equivalence principle, the short-term creep behavior was characterized to predict long-term performance. The accelerated characterization curve can effectively predict the creep behavior of PVC under a stress level of 16 MPa over approximately 6.5 years in an environment of 60 °C and 90% RH. At the same time, the master creep modulus curve of PVC under any aging duration and stress level can be established under the specified environmental conditions of 60 °C and 90% RH. Long-term creep curves were fitted using a locally structured derivative Kelvin model, demonstrating that this model can effectively simulate the long-term creep behavior of PVC under hydrothermal conditions. The results indicate that at a stress level of 16 MPa, PVC is expected to undergo creep damage and failure after approximately 15 years in such an environment. These findings provide a critical reference for assessing the long-term performance of PVC in hydrothermal environments. Full article

To effectively improve the anti-progressive collapse performance of steel frames, a novel reinforced joint, named the welded steel-frame joints strengthened by outer corrugated plates, was proposed. Firstly, the finite element model was validated according to previous test results. The anti-progressive collapse behavior of the novel reinforced joint was analyzed based on the validated modeling method. Effects of the central angle, corrugated plate thickness, corrugated plate width, length of circular arc, and welding angle on the anti-progressive collapse behavior of the reinforced joint were discussed. The design suggestions of the corrugated plates are presented. Finally, the effectiveness of the outer corrugated plates was further verified through one full-scale beam–column joint case and three plane frames. The results show that compared with the specimen strengthened by inner corrugated plates, the peak load and ultimate displacement of the joint strengthened by outer corrugated plates increased by 17.0% and 16.3%, respectively. Compared with the traditional full-scale beam–column joint, the load-bearing capacity and ultimate displacement of the joint strengthened by outer corrugated plates designed under reasonable suggestions significantly increased. Simply from the perspective of joints, the design suggestions were highly effective. Compared with the traditional plane steel-frame case with a total height of six floors, the bearing capacity and ultimate displacement of the plane steel-frame case strengthened by outer corrugated plates increased by 19.8% and 38.3%, respectively. The outer corrugated plates demonstrated a more pronounced effect in enhancing the collapse resistance for middle floors. Overall, the novel type of joint had a simple form and clear mechanical principles, which fully exerted the catenary capacity of the steel beams. The outer corrugated plates significantly improved the anti-progressive collapse performance of steel-frame structures. Full article

As one of the mooring foundation types for floating wind turbine platforms, research on the anchor pullout bearing characteristics of mooring pile foundations remains insufficient, and the underlying mechanism of anchor pullout bearing capacity needs further investigation and clarification. This paper conducts a numerical study on the bearing characteristics of mooring pile foundations under tensile anchoring forces with loading angles ranging from 0° to 90° and loading point depths of 0.2L, 0.4L, 0.6L, and 0.8L (where L is the pile length). The research findings indicate that the anchor pullout bearing capacity decreases as the loading angle increases from 0° to 90°, and exhibits a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase in loading point depth. For rigid pile-anchors, the maximum anchor pullout bearing capacity occurs at a loading point depth of 0.6–0.8L, while for flexible piles, it appears at 0.4–0.6L. Both the bending moment and shear force of the pile shaft show abrupt changes at the loading point, where their maximum values also occur. This implies that the structural design at the loading point of the mooring pile foundation requires reinforcement. Meanwhile, the bending moment and shear force of the pile shaft gradually decrease with the increase in the loading angle, which is attributed to the gradual reduction of the horizontal load component. The axial force of the pile shaft also undergoes an abrupt change at the loading point, presenting characteristics where the upper section of the pile is under compression, the lower section is in tension, and both the pile top and pile tip are subjected to zero axial force. The depth of the loading point significantly influences the movement mode of the pile shaft. Shallow loading (0.2–0.4L) induces clockwise rotation, and the soil pressure around the pile is concentrated in the counterclockwise direction (90–270°). In the case of deep loading, counterclockwise rotation or pure translation of the pile shaft results in a more uniform stress distribution in the surrounding foundation soil, with the maximum soil pressure concentrated near the loading point. In this paper, the overall mechanical response of composite laminates with different structural orientations in low-velocity impacts is discussed using a combination of finite element simulations and experiments. In this process, the crack dissipation energy combined with absorbed energy is proposed as the damage index to evaluate the degree of the plate’s impact damage. Both the impact energy and the crack energy calculated from the experimental primary damage energy are verified. The results show that with the increase in the impact energy, the primary damage mode changes, which changes the crack-absorbed energy accordingly as well as the stiffness and load-bearing capacity of the plate structure during the impact process. This index can not only be used to characterize the performance of cracks in the overall damage but can also predict the damage state of the plate and plain weave fabric. Full article

In this study, the impacts of various grouting methods and volumes on the vertical bearing characteristics of model piles in clay strata were investigated through indoor static load tests on one ungrouted model pile and two model piles with grouting at the pile tip, as well as two model piles with distributed grouting at the pile tip and along the pile side. These tests were performed in conjunction with data obtained from optical fiber sensors that monitored changes in the internal forces of the pile body. The results indicate that, compared to the ungrouted model pile Z1, the ultimate bearing capacities of the grouted model piles Z2 to Z5 were increased by 83.9%, 175.0%, 125.0%, and 253.6%, respectively. Additionally, the displacements at the pile tops after failure reached 57.6%, 62.3%, 69.5%, and 73.5% that of the ungrouted model pile Z1. These results demonstrate that post-grouting can significantly enhance the ultimate bearing capacity of model piles and reduce settlement at the pile top. Under various loads, the axial force of the pile body decreases gradually with the increasing depth of the pile foundation and increases with the increasing load at the pile top. The increase in the ultimate average side friction resistance and ultimate tip resistance of the grouted model piles (i.e., Z2 to Z5), in comparison to the ungrouted pile, was positively correlated with the grouting volume at the pile tip and along the pile side. All five model piles displayed the characteristics of friction piles. Full article

The active pile underpinning technology when a tunnel passes under a bridge involves complex force conditions, making construction monitoring and control extremely challenging. However, there is a lack of research on the laws governing the stress and deformation responses of bridges during the construction process. This paper takes an active pile underpinning project of a metro line passing under a bridge as a case study. Design and construction plans are taken as the basis, and on-site monitoring data are incorporated. A three-dimensional finite element simulation model is established. This model is used to analyze the distribution and variation laws of stress and settlement during the pile underpinning process. The results show that: considering the traffic conditions of the bridge and the requirements for additional stress, it is reasonable to suggest that the actual settlement of the bridge deck should be 2–3 mm; the determination of the jacking force should generally be greater than the load transmitted from the pier column to the underpinning beam and less than 75% of the maximum bearing capacity, which is more reasonable. Laser welding, a vital process in modern industry, offers significant technical and economic benefits, including improved part quality, precision, productivity, and cost reduction. This study significantly enhances our understanding of heat-treatable weldability (AA2024, AA2017, AA6061) and non-heat-treatable AA5083 aluminum alloys. It establishes a “weldability window” based on power density and interaction time, identifying three key domains: insufficient penetration, full penetration with regular weld, and irregular weld or cutoff. The study’s findings reveal that heat-treatable alloys soften in the fusion zone due to the dissolution of reinforcing precipitates during welding. In contrast, non-heat-treatable alloys exhibit hardening due to a fine dendritic microstructure. The fusion zone features fine dendrites, and in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), coarse particles and liquation at the fusion line are observed, particularly in AA6061 and 2024 alloys. The study also shows that the joint efficiency, a measure of the weld’s load-bearing capacity, is approximately 90% for the AA5083 alloy and 80% for the heat-treatable alloys. These findings significantly contribute to our understanding of welding processes. They can be used to optimize laser welding processes, thereby ensuring the production of high-quality and reliable joints in industrial applications. Full article

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the alternative materials suitable for seawater-lubricated bearings, favored for its excellent corrosion resistance and good self-lubricating properties. As marine equipment develops towards higher load, higher reliability, and longer service life, more stringent requirements are imposed on the wear resistance of bearing materials. However, traditional PTFE materials struggle to meet the performance requirements for long-term stable operation in modern marine environments. To improve the wear resistance of PTFE, this study used alumina (Al2O3) particles with three different particle sizes (50 nm, 3 μm, and 80 μm) as fillers and prepared Al2O3/PTFE composites via the cold pressing and sintering process. Tribological performance tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk reciprocating friction and wear tester, with Cr12 steel balls as counterparts, under an artificial seawater lubrication environment, applying a normal load of 10 N for 40 min. The microstructure and wear scar morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical properties were measured using a Shore hardness tester. A systematic study was carried out on the microstructure, mechanical properties, friction coefficient, wear rate, and limiting PV value of the composites. The results show that the particle size of Al2O3 particles significantly affects the mechanical properties, friction coefficient, wear rate, and limiting PV value of the composites. The 50 nm Al2O3/PTFE formed a uniformly spread friction film and transfer film during the friction process, which has better friction and wear reduction performance and load bearing capacity. The 80 μm Al2O3 group exhibited poor friction properties despite higher hardness. The nanoscale Al2O3 filler was superior in improving the wear resistance, stabilizing the coefficient of friction, and prolonging the service life of the material, and demonstrated good seawater lubrication bearing suitability. This study provides theoretical support and an experimental basis for the design optimization and engineering application of PTFE-based composites in harsh marine environments. Full article

This study investigates the effectiveness of combining helical piles (HPs) with geogrid reinforcement compared to conventional piles in improving pullout performance in dense sand, addressing a key challenge in reinforced foundation design. A comprehensive experimental program was conducted to evaluate the pullout behavior of HPs embedded in Shahriyar sand reinforced with geogrid layers. The research focused on quantifying the effects of critical parameters—pile configuration, helix pitch, and geogrid placement depth—on ultimate pullout capacity and displacement response to better understand hybrid reinforcement mechanisms. Pullout tests were performed using a Zwick/Roell Z150 universal testing machine with automated data acquisition via TestXpert11 V3.2 software. The experimental program assessed the following influences: (1) pile configurations—plain, single-helix, and double-helix; (2) helix pitch ratios of 1.00, 1.54, and 1.92 (pitch-to-shaft diameter); and (3) geogrid placement depths of 7.69, 11.54, and 15.38 (depth-to-shaft diameter) on pullout behavior. Results demonstrate that geogrid reinforcement substantially enhances pullout resistance, with single-helix HPs achieving up to a 518% increase over plain piles. Pullout resistance is highly sensitive to geogrid spacing, with optimal performance at a non-dimensional distance of 0.47 from the pile–soil interface. Additionally, double-blade HPs with geogrid placed at 0.35 exhibit a 62% reduction in displacement ratio, underscoring the role of geogrid in improving pile stiffness and load-bearing capacity. These findings provide new insights into the synergistic effects of helical pile geometry and geogrid placement for designing efficient reinforced granular foundations. Full article

This study investigates the mechanical performance and failure mechanisms of large-span, cast-in situ hollow-core floor slabs with square-box core molds under vertical loading. A combination of in situ tests and refined numerical simulations was used to investigate the slab’s behavior. An 8 m × 8 m hollow slab from the Xinluzhou Industrial Park in Hefei, China, was subjected to five-stage cyclic loading up to 9.0 kN/m2 using a distributed water tank system. Real-time strain monitoring showed that the slab remained within the elastic range, exhibiting a linear strain-load relationship and bidirectional bending stiffness, with less than 5% deviation between the X and Y directions. Finite element analysis, incorporating a concrete plastic damage model and a bilinear steel model, replicated the experimental stress distribution, with errors of less than 6.9% for reinforcement and 8.8% for concrete. The simulation predicted an ultimate load-bearing capacity of 27.2 kN/m2, with initial failure indicated by diagonal cracks at the column capital edges, followed by flexural cracks at the slab mid-span. These findings clarify the bidirectional bending behavior and stress redistribution, characterized by “banded gradient” and “island-shaped” stress zones. This study provides valuable insights and design optimization strategies to improve the structural performance and safety of hollow-core floor slabs in high-rise buildings. Full article

Designing deep foundations in densely urbanized areas presents significant challenges due to complex soil conditions, high groundwater levels, and the proximity of sensitive infrastructure. This study addresses these challenges through the development and numerical analysis of a combined pile–raft foundation (CPRF) system for a 75 m tall hotel tower in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The construction site is characterized by heterogeneous soil layers and is located adjacent to a historic quay wall and bridge abutments, necessitating strict deformation control and robust structural performance. A comprehensive three-dimensional finite element model was developed using PLAXIS 3D to simulate staged construction and soil–structure interaction (SSI). The CPRF system comprises a 2 m thick triangular raft and 34 large-diameter bored piles (1.5 m in diameter, 40–45 m in length), designed to achieve a load-sharing ratio of 0.89. The raft contributes significantly to the overall bearing capacity, reducing bending moments and settlement. The predicted settlement of the high-rise structure remains within 45 mm, while displacement of adjacent heritage structures does not exceed critical thresholds (≤30 mm), ensuring compliance with serviceability criteria. The study provides validated stiffness parameters for superstructure design and demonstrates the effectiveness of CPRF systems in mitigating geotechnical risks in historically sensitive urban environments. By integrating advanced numerical modeling with staged construction simulation and heritage preservation criteria, the research contributes to the evolving practice of performance-based foundation design. The findings support the broader applicability of CPRFs in infrastructure-dense settings and offer a methodological framework for future projects involving complex SSI and cultural heritage constraints. In subway stations constructed using the cut-and-cover method, an increasing number of projects are adopting the form of precast components combined with on-site assembly. However, analysis of the novel structural elements within such overlapped subway stations remains inadequate. To simulate the shear failure mechanism at slab–wall joints, the structural behavior of these joints in overlapped subway stations is idealized as a rigid die stamping problem. An admissible failure mechanism is constructed, comprising a rigid wedge zone and a vertical tensile fracture perpendicular to a smooth base. The limit analysis approach is adopted, a two-dimensional velocity field is constructed, and the upper-bound theorem is applied to determine the bearing capacity of these joints under strip loading, utilizing a modified Coulomb yield criterion incorporating a small tensile stress cutoff. The failure mechanism proposed on the basis of an engineering case is validated through analytical calculations and parametric studies. Finally, a parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of factors such as the geometric configuration of the slab–wall joints and the tensile and compressive strengths of concrete on their ultimate bearing capacity. This study introduces an innovative deflection-controlled design method (DCM) for evaluating the bearing capacity of offshore mono-bucket foundations (MBFs) in clay, integrating advanced numerical simulations using FLAC3D with the modified cam clay (MCC) soil model. Departing from conventional ultimate bearing capacity approaches, the proposed method prioritizes serviceability limits by constraining foundation deflections to ensure optimal structural performance and turbine efficiency. A systematic investigation revealed that the MBF performance is predominantly governed by eccentricity ratios and soil–structure interaction, with vertical loads exhibiting a minimal impact in a serviceability limit state. Key findings include the following: (1) the rotation center (RC) stabilizes at approximately 0.8 times the skirt length (L) under loading; (2) thin, deep MBFs (aspect ratio > 1.0) exhibit up to a 30% higher bearing capacity compared to wide, shallow configurations; (3) increasing eccentricity ratios (ε = 0.31–1.54) enhance the moment capacity but reduce the allowable horizontal force by 15–20%; (4) compressive vertical loads (υ = −0.30) slightly reduce the normalized bending moments (ω) by 5–10% at low eccentricities (ε < 0.5). The numerical framework was rigorously validated against centrifuge test data, demonstrating high accuracy (error < 3%) in predicting foundation behavior. By bridging geotechnical mechanics with practical engineering requirements, this study provides a robust and efficient design framework for MBFs, offering significant improvements in reliability and cost-effectiveness for offshore wind turbine applications. The proposed DCM successfully guided the design of an MBF in southeastern China, demonstrating its efficacy for use with homogeneous clay. Full article

In this paper, the wrinkling behavior of an inflated cantilever beam is presented. An analytical solution for the load-bearing capacity of an inflated beam is proposed to predict the ultimate wrinkling force and critical wrinkling force of the inflated beam, and an iterative membrane properties method is used to simulate the wrinkling of membrane structures. The load-bearing capacities of an inflated beam, numerically simulated based on these two methods, are compared with experimental results. Good agreement between wrinkling using UMAT-modified M3D4 elements based on the IMP method and experiments was obtained. The effect of wrinkling on the stress distribution of the airship envelope under internal pressure is also explored based on a practice airship. Full article

Design of Prefabricated Concrete-Filled Steel Pipe Columns for Pile Beam Arch Subway Stations Based on Carbon Emission Optimization

With the rapid expansion of underground rail transit construction in China, the high carbon emissions associated with subway tunnels and stations have become an increasing concern. This study systematically examines the carbon emissions of prefabricated concrete–filled steel pipe columns (PCSPCs) during the construction phase of a Beijing subway station built via the pile beam arch (PBA) method, applying the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology as a case study. An analytical framework for the synergistic optimization of carbon emissions and costs was developed. By systematically adjusting key design parameters—such as the column diameter, wall thickness, and concrete strength—it was possible to minimize both carbon emissions and project costs while meeting the ultimate load-bearing capacity requirements. The results indicate that the production phase of PCSPCs accounts for as much as 98.845% of total carbon emissions, with labor, materials, and machinery contributing 10.342%, 88.724%, and 0.934%, respectively. A sensitivity analysis revealed that steel plates have the greatest impact on carbon emissions, followed by steel reinforcement, whereas concrete and cement exhibit relatively lower sensitivities. The ultimate load-bearing capacity of PCSPCs increases with larger column diameters, thicker walls, and higher concrete strength grades, with the relationships displaying a nonlinear trend. The damage modes and performance of PCSPCs under different design parameters were further verified through finite element analysis. On the basis of the optimization algorithm used to adjust the design parameters, the carbon emissions and costs of the PCSPCs were reduced by 10.32% and 21.55%, respectively, while still meeting the load-bearing capacity requirements.
