The Sultanate of Oman boasts remarkable biodiversity, exemplified by such species as the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) and the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), national symbols that highlight the extensive conservation efforts required to protect the country’s natural heritage. During decades, Omani authorities have taken significant measures to safeguard wildlife and preserve the natural environment. A sanctuary dedicated to the reintroduction of the Arabian Oryx, after extinction in nature in 1972, was established in 1980 in the Al Wusta Governorate under the patronage of the Royal Diwan and currently administrated by the recently established Environment Authority. During the almost 40 years since the reintroduction and the creation of the sanctuary, the oryx population has grown slowly but constantly. In 2021, the sanctuary hosted 738 oryx, allowing the start of the reintroduction of the species into the natural environment. Small groups of animals were released into the wild in selected areas. No animal health adverse events were recorded, and mortality was generally due to injuries received as a consequence of fighting, in particular during mating season. Standard veterinary care, including control of internal and external parasites, was regularly provided. In some occasions, immunization against certain diseases, such as clostridial infections, pasteurellosis, or mycoplasmosis, was also applied. In 2023, an FMD outbreak in cattle reported in Dhofar, about 500 km from the Al Wusta sanctuary, motivated specific prophylactic actions to prevent the risk of diffusion to oryx. From December 2023 to January 2024, an immunization program was undertaken using an FMD vaccine against serotypes A, O, and SAT 1, mostly in male oryx, while pregnant oryx were avoided for abortion risk due to handling. The following year, in January 2025, a severe outbreak occurred in oryx herds held in the sanctuary. The rapid onset and the spread of clinical symptoms among animals (100% morbidity in the second day after the first appearance of signs in some individuals) were suggestive of a highly contagious disease. The animals suffered from severe depression and inappetence, rapidly followed by abundant salivation, erosions of the oral mucosa and tongue, and diarrhea, with a short course characterized by prostration and death of the animal in the most severe cases. Therapeutical attempts (administration of antibiotics and rehydration) were mostly ineffective. Laboratory investigations (ELISA and PCR) ruled out contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Johne’s disease and Peste des petits ruminants (PPR). Both serology and antigen detection showed positiveness to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Out of a total population of 669 present in the sanctuary at the beginning of the outbreak, 226 (33.78%) oryx died. Despite the vaccinal status, the 38.49% of dead animals resulted being vaccinated against FMD. Taking into account the incalculable value of the species, the outbreak represented a very dangerous event that risked wiping out the decades of conservation efforts. Therefore, all the available means, such as accrued biosecurity and adequate prophylaxis, should be implemented to prevent the recurrence of such health risks. The delicate equilibrium of wild fauna in Oman requires study and support for an effective protection, in line with the national plan “Vision 2040”, targeting the inclusion of the Sultanate within the 20 best virtuous countries for wildlife protection. Marine oil spills pose a serious and persistent threat to marine ecosystems, coastal resources, and global environmental health. These incidents not only disrupt ecological balance by damaging marine flora and fauna but also lead to long-term economic consequences for fisheries, tourism, and maritime industries. Owing to their rapid spread and often unpredictable occurrence, timely and accurate detection is essential for effective containment and mitigation. An efficient detection system can significantly enhance the responsiveness of emergency teams, enabling targeted interventions that minimize ecological damage and economic loss. This paper proposes a marine radar-based oil spill detection method that combines the Significance-to-Boundary Ratio (SBR) feature with an improved Sauvola adaptive thresholding algorithm. The raw radar data was firstly preprocessed through mean and median filtering, grayscale correction, and contrast enhancement. SBR features were then employed to extract coarse oil spill regions, which were further refined using an improved Sauvola thresholding algorithm followed by a denoising step to obtain fine-grained segmentation. Comparative experiments using different threshold values demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior segmentation performance by better preserving oil spill boundaries and reducing background noise. Overall, the approach provides a robust and efficient solution for marine oil spill detection and monitoring. Full article

The proliferation of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in the Chongón Reservoir, located within the Parque Lago National Recreation Area in Guayaquil, Ecuador, poses significant challenges to the local aquatic ecosystem and water resource management. This study assesses the impact of water hyacinth coverage on evapotranspiration rates over a 20-year period from 2002 to 2022 using remote sensing data and geospatial analysis. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), derived from Landsat satellite imagery, along with meteorological records, was utilized to model the spatial and temporal dynamics of water hyacinth coverage and its effects on evapotranspiration. Our results indicate that water hyacinth coverage fluctuates significantly between rainy and dry seasons, increasing from covering 10.42% of the reservoir area in 2002 to a peak of 42.33% in 2017 during the rainy seasons. A strong positive correlation (r=0.92, p<0.001) was found between water hyacinth coverage and net daily water loss due to evapotranspiration. The evapotranspiration rates associated with water hyacinth were significantly higher during the rainy season (mean of 2309.90 mm/year) compared to the dry season (mean of 1917.87 mm/year). These elevated evapotranspiration rates contribute to increased water loss from the reservoir, potentially impacting water availability for municipal and agricultural use. Controlling the spread of water hyacinth is therefore crucial for preserving the reservoir’s ecological integrity and ensuring sustainable water resource management. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for informing management strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of invasive species on freshwater resources and maintaining aquatic ecosystem health. Grasshoppers can significantly disrupt agricultural and livestock management because they reproduce and develop quickly in friendly environments. Xilingol League is the region most severely affected by grasshopper infestations. The region’s extensive grasslands are considered valuable, a critical component of the local ecosystem, a vital resource for the region’s key economic activity of livestock farming, and crucial for supporting diverse flora and fauna, carbon sequestration, and climate regulation. Oedaleus decorus asiaticus (O. d. asiaticus) is highly harmful in Xilingol League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Therefore, early warning is crucial for projecting O. d. asiaticus’s regional spread and detecting the impacts of critical environmental elements. We systematically identified 26 major contributing elements by examining four categories of environmental factors—meteorology, vegetation, soil, and topography—encompassing the three growth phases of grasshoppers. Furthermore, the MaxEnt and frequency ratio (FR) approaches, coupled with multisource remote sensing data, were used to predict a potentially appropriate distribution (habitat suitability) of O. d. asiaticus in Xilingol League. The research found nine key habitat factors influencing O. d. asiaticus distribution: the mean specific humidity during the adult stage (ASH), vegetation type (VT), above-ground biomass during the nymph stage (NAB), soil sand content (SSAND), mean precipitation during the egg stage (EP), mean precipitation during the nymph stage (NP), soil bulk density (SBD), elevation, and soil type (ST). Additionally, our analysis revealed that the most suitable and moderately suitable habitats for O. d. asiaticus are predominantly located in the southern and eastern parts of Xilingol League, with significant concentrations in West Ujumqin, East Ujumqin, Xilinhot, Zhenglan, Zheng Xiangbai, Duolun, and Taipusi. Based on the suitable habitat results, policymakers may make judgments about future management actions to preserve the ecological security of grasslands and their sustainable growth. This study indicates that the Maxent approach exhibited superior accuracy (receiver operating characteristic) compared to the FR approach for assessing the habitat suitability for O. d. asiaticus in Xilingol League. The preservation of natural heritage is a global concern nowadays, which is equally important for climate resilience and for sustainable resource use. The present research is focused on assessing the trends of natural landscape changes, such as forests, meadows, and pastures, and the preservation of locally kept traditional livestock, and plant varieties as indicators of biodiversity, in the countries of the European Union between 2012 and 2021, using secondary data. The research methodology was a panel analysis according to the Linear Mixed Model method. The results show that while larger areas allocated to agriculture generally enhance plant biodiversity, they have the opposite effect on the number of local livestock breeds. The spreading of organic farming enhances the preservation of local livestock breeds, while the spreading of forest areas is beneficial for plant biodiversity. The share of permanent meadows and pastures increases with increasing agricultural areas, and this also affects plant biodiversity positively. All biodiversity indicators increased during the analyzed period, as did well as the size of forest areas and, permanent meadows and pastures, which reflects the improvement in natural heritage and the enhancement of environmental protection awareness with time. The differences among countries show, that highly developed agriculture does not mean better preservation of natural heritage, nor the opposite, as ecological conditions and agricultural history may influence the natural vegetation and biodiversity. The protection of natural heritage in Europe differs from the rest of the world, as recent agricultural policy of the EU emphasizes the importance of environmental sustainability. The promotion of low-input use in agriculture, however, may be in conflict with the globally increasing demand for food. Full article

Fingerprints play a significant role in various fields due to their uniqueness. In order to effectively utilize fingerprint information, it is necessary to enhance image quality. This paper introduces a method based on Radial Hilbert transform (RHLT), which simulates the vortex filter using the point spread function (PSF) of spiral phase plate (SPP) with a topological charge l=1, for fingerprint edge enhancement. The experimental results show that the processed fingerprint image has more distinct edges, with an increase in information entropy and average gradient. Unlike classical edge detection operators, the fingerprint edge image obtained by the RHLT method exhibits a lower mean square error (MSE) and a higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). This indicates that the RHLT method provides more accurate edge detection and demonstrates higher noise-resistance capabilities. Due to its ability to highlight edge information while preserving more original features, this method has great application potential in fingerprint image processing. Full article

A vector–host model of dengue with multiple stages and independent fluctuations is investigated in this paper. Firstly, the existence and uniqueness of the positive solution are shown by contradiction. When the death rates of aquatic mosquitoes, adult mosquitoes, and human beings respectively control the intensities of white noises, and if R0s>1, then the persistence in the mean for both infective mosquitoes and infective human beings is derived. When R0s>1 is valid, the existence of stationary distribution is derived through constructing several appropriate Lyapunov functions. If the intensities of white noises are controlled and φ<0 is valid, then the extinction for both infective mosquitoes and infective human beings is obtained by applying the comparison theorem and ergodic theorem. Further, the main findings are verified through numerical simulations by using the positive preserving truncated Euler–Maruyama method (PPTEM). Moreover, several numerical simulations on the infection scale of dengue in Fuzhou City were conducted using surveillance data. The main results indicate that the decrease in the transfer proportion from aquatic mosquitoes to adult mosquitoes reduces the infection scale of infective human beings with dengue virus, and the death rates of aquatic mosquitoes and adult mosquitoes affect the value of the critical threshold R0s. Further, the controls of the death rates of mosquitoes are the effective routes by the decision-makers of the Chinese mainland against the spread of dengue. Full article

The global spread of African swine fever (ASF) in recent decades has led to the need for technological advances in sampling and diagnostic techniques. The impetus for these has been the need to enable sampling by lay persons and to obtain at least a preliminary diagnosis in the field for early control measures to be put in place before final laboratory confirmation. In rural Africa, rapid diagnosis is hampered by challenges that include lack of infrastructure as well as human and financial resources. Lack of animal health personnel, access to affordable means to transport field samples to a laboratory, and lack of laboratories with the capacity to make the diagnosis result in severe under-reporting of ASF, especially in endemic areas. This review summarizes the challenges identified in gap analyses relevant to low- and middle-income countries, with a focus on Africa, and explore the opportunities provided by recent research to improve field diagnosis and quality of diagnostic samples used. Sampling techniques include invasive sampling techniques requiring trained personnel and non-invasive sampling requiring minimal training, sampling of decomposed carcass material, and preservation of samples in situations where cold chain maintenance cannot be guaranteed. Availability and efficacy of point-of-care (POC) tests for ASF has improved considerably in recent years and their application, as well as advantages and limitations, are discussed. The adequacy of existing laboratory diagnostic capacity is evaluated and opportunities for networking amongst reference and other laboratories offering diagnostic services are discussed. Maintaining laboratory diagnostic efficiency in the absence of samples during periods of quiescence is another issue that requires attention, and the role of improved laboratory networking is emphasized. Early diagnosis of ASF is key to managing the disease spread. Therefore, the establishment of the Africa Chapter of the Global African Swine Fever Research Alliance (GARA) increases opportunities for collaboration and networking among the veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the region. Ecological fire prevention forest belts can effectively alleviate the spread of forest fires and reduce the harm caused by forest fires. Exploring the distribution and changes in suitable growth areas for fire-resistant forest species under the effects of climate change can provide effective references for the introduction of ecological fire prevention and tree species preservation in the region. This study is based on the distribution data of six typical ecological fire prevention forest species in the subtropical regions of China. The maximum entropy model (MaxEnt), optimized by the ENMeval data package, was used to analyze the potential relationship between the ecological environment variables and fire prevention forest species. The potential distribution of certain tree species in the historical period and in future periods is simulated. In addition, the area changes, migration trends, and stable areas of tree species under climate change are also discussed. The research results indicated the following: (1) The AUC values of the optimized model are all higher than 0.9, indicating the optimal prediction results. (2) The climate variables that have the greatest impact on the suitable habitat of Schima superba were the annual mean temperature, precipitation of the driest month, and mean diurnal range. Quercus glauca was mainly influenced by the minimum temperature of the coldest month and the precipitation of the warmest quarter. Castanopsis eyrei was mainly influenced by the precipitation of the driest month and the annual precipitation. The distribution of suitable growth areas for Symplocos sumuntia is mainly influenced by the precipitation of the driest month. The distribution of Camellia oleifera was influenced by the minimum temperature of the coldest month. The potential habitat distribution of Photinia serratifolia was greatly influenced by annual precipitation. (3) Until 2090, the expansion degree of the suitable growth area will be Symplocos sumuntia (51.05%) > Schima superba (19.41%) > Camellia oleifera (10.14%) > Quercus glauca (6.80%) > Castanopsis eyrei (2.34%) > Photinia serratifolia (−6.97%). (4) The centroid of Schima superba will migrate northward. Quercus glauca will migrate northeast. The suitable areas for the migration of Symplocos sumuntia and Castanopsis eyrei will move in a northwest direction, with repeated changes in alum migration, as well as with the largest migration span for Castanopsis eyrei. In addition, Camellia oleifera will move southwest. The centroid of Photinia serratifolia will migrate to the southeast. (5) The six fire-resistant tree species in this study were noted to have excellent stability in Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi. This conclusion can provide an effective reference for the introduction of ecological fire prevention tree species and the protection of tree species under climate change in subtropical forest-fire-prone areas in China. Uniform filler distribution in composites is an important requirement. Therefore, BaO glass, nano hydroxyapatite and quartz filler distribution was realized through PCL microcapsules which progressively release filler during matrix polymerization. Two composites were realized based on a complex matrix containing BisGMA, UDMA, HEMA and PEG400 mixed with a previously described mineral filler: 33% for C1 and 31% for C2. The spreading efficiency was observed via SEM, revealing a complete disintegration of the microcapsules during C1 polymerization, while C2 preserved some microcapsule parts that were well embedded into the matrix beside BaO filler particles; this was confirmed by means of the EDS spectra. Mesenchymal stem cells of palatal origin were cultured on the composites for 1, 3, 5 and 7 days. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level was measured at each time interval and the cytotoxicity was tested after 3, 5 and 7 days of co-culture on the composite samples. The SEM investigation showed that both composites allowed for robust proliferation of the cells. The MSC cell pluripotency stage was observed from 1 to 3 days with an average level of ALP of 209.2 u/L for C1 and 193.0 u/L for C2 as well as a spindle cell morphology. Cell differentiation occurred after 5 and 7 days of culture, implied by morphological changes such as flattened, star and rounded shapes, observed via SEM, which were correlated with an increased ALP level (279.4 u/L for C1 and 284.3 u/L for C2). The EDX spectra after 7 days of co-culture revealed increasing amounts of P and Ca close to the hydroxyapatite stoichiometry, indicating the stimulation of the osteoinductive behavior of MSCs by C1 and C2. The MTT assay test showed a cell viability of 98.08% for C1 and 97.33% for C2 after 3 days, proving the increased biocompatibility of the composite samples. The cell viability slightly decreased at 5 and 7 days but the results were still excellent: 89.5% for C1 and 87.3% for C2. Thus, both C1 and C2 are suitable for further in vivo testing. Full article

Diptera, with their participation in pollination, significantly contribute to the maintenance of plant diversity, and they also have great potential for assessing habitat health and preserving it. A decline in their abundance and diversity has been recorded worldwide as a consequence of biotic, abiotic, and anthropic alterations. In addition to pollinators, these orders include agricultural and forestry pests, which are a threat to both cultivated and wild plants that are very important to the economy. Many pests have escaped from their native areas, and it is important to monitor their spread to implement sustainable means of control. Our study provides baseline information on Diptera and Vespidae diversity in the Mediterranean mosaic of agroecosystems, giving information on the importance of human influence on insect diversity. We carried out an insect inventory in Istria, Croatia, using a set of traps placed in the proximity of beehives. This study was also important in determining the presence of pests and newly introduced species. A total of 94 species from 24 families were recorded—7 important agricultural pests of Diptera and 17 new records for Croatia. The correlation between species diversity and environmental and anthropogenic factors leads to the conclusion that total insect species richness, pest species richness, and the first findings depend on human activities. The number of honeybee colonies negatively correlated with species richness, while anthropic influence positively affected total and pest species richness. Full article

The craft of painting icons on glass developed in the 17th century in Transylvania (Romania) following the spread of the news about the wooden icon of the weeping Mother of God in the church of Nicula. This news turned Nicula into a pilgrimage centre, and requests for reproductions of the icon led to the locals becoming glass painters. Because of the surplus of icons, some of the Nicula painters set up new icon-painting centres along the road to Brașov (to the south) and the other main trade routes of Transylvania. In order to highlight the potential for sustainable development associated with this craft and to stimulate the painting of icons in the traditional way, we conducted documentary research on the subject of icons on glass. This research revealed the local peculiarities of the icon painters’ workshops and their importance to the identity of the Romanian peasants in Transylvania. We also conducted a participatory observation carried out in Brasov, which revealed that the iconography courses in popular schools of arts and crafts were both a viable way of managing the relationship with the iconographic tradition and a means to capitalize on religious painting on glass as a cultural heritage resource. The research highlighted the way in which, to preserve the traditional dimension of the craft, it is useful to encourage students to use anonymous glass icons as models and to have limited involvement in model restoration. Short femoral stems, with preservation of the femoral bone stock, are commonly used in recent years for hip replacement in younger and more active patients. Obesity is increasingly spreading even in the younger population. The aim of this case-series study is to evaluate short stems compared to traditional hip prostheses in the obese population. A total of 77 consecutive patients with a BMI greater than or equal to 30 Kg/m2 were enrolled in this prospective study and were divided into two groups: 49 patients have been implanted with short stems while 28 patients were implanted with traditional stems. All the patients were treated for primary osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis and all the stems were implanted by the same surgeon using a posterior approach. Clinical (Harris Hip Score—HHS, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index—WOMAC, visual analogue scale—VAS, 12-item Short Form Health Survey—SF-12) and radiographic outcomes were recorded. Radiological evaluations were carried out by three different blinded surgeons. A statistical analysis was performed (chi-square, t-test, Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test, 2-factor ANOVA). At a mean follow-up of 42.6 months both groups showed a marked improvement in pain and in the clinical scores between pre- and post-surgical procedures (p < 0.05) with no significant differences between the two groups at last follow-up (p > 0.05). The radiological evaluations, with high concordance correlation between the three blinded surgeons (ICC consistently >0.80), showed good positioning and osseointegration in all cases, with no significant differences in the restoration of the joint geometry and complications. No revisions were recorded during the follow-up period. In conclusion, short stems appear to be a good option for bone preservation even in obese patients, showing comparable results to traditional implants. Full article

Ocean resources are a priceless repository of unique species and bioactive compounds with denouement properties that can be used in the fabrication of advanced biomaterials as new templates for supporting the cell culture envisaging tissue engineering approaches. The collagen of marine origin can be sustainably isolated from the underrated fish processing industry by-products, while silica and related materials can be found in the spicules of marine sponges and diatoms frustules. Aiming to address the potential of biomaterials composed from marine collagen and silica-based materials in the context of bone regeneration, four different 3D porous structure formulations (COL, COL:BG, COL:D.E, and COL:BS) were fabricated by freeze-drying. The skins of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were used as raw materials for the collagen (COL) isolation, which was successfully characterized by SDS-PAGE, FTIR, CD, and amino acid analyses, and identified as a type I collagen, produced with a 1.5% yield and a preserved characteristic triple helix conformation. Bioactive glass 45S5 bioglass® (BG), diatomaceous earth (D.E.) powder, and biosilica (BS) isolated from the Axinella infundibuliformis sponge were chosen as silica-based materials, which were obtained as microparticles and characterized by distinct morphological features. The biomaterials revealed microporous structures, showing a porosity higher than 85%, a mean pore size range of 138–315 μm depending on their composition, with 70% interconnectivity which can be favorable for cell migration and ensure the needed nutrient supply. In vitro, biological assays were conducted by culturing L929 fibroblast-like cells, which confirmed not only the non-toxic nature of the developed biomaterials but also their capability to support cell adhesion and proliferation, particularly the COL:BS biomaterials, as observed by calcein-AM staining upon seven days of culture. Moreover, phalloidin and DAPI staining revealed well-spread cells, populating the entire construct. This study established marine collagen/silica biocomposites as potential scaffolds for tissue engineering, setting the basis for future studies, particularly envisaging the regeneration of non-load-bearing bone tissues. A porphyrin derivative functionalized with the L-enantiomer of proline amino acid was characterized at the air–pure water interface of the Langmuir trough. The porphyrin derivative was dissolved in dichloromethane solution, spread at the air–subphase interface and investigated by acquiring the surface pressure vs. area per molecule Langmuir curves. It is worth observing that the behavior of the molecules of the porphyrin derivative floating film was substantially influenced by the presence of L-proline amino acid dissolved in the subphase (10−5 M); on the contrary, the physical chemical features of the floating molecules were only slightly influenced by the D-proline dissolved in the subphase. Such an interesting chirality-driven selection was preserved when the floating film was transferred onto solid supports by means of the Langmuir–Schaefer method, but it did not emerge when a spin-coating technique was used for the layering of the tetrapyrrolic derivatives. The obtained results represent proof of concept for the realization of active molecular layers for chiral discrimination: porphyrin derivatives, due to their intriguing spectroscopic and supramolecular properties, can be functionalized with the chiral molecule that should be detected. Moreover, the results emphasize the crucial role of the deposition technique on the features of the sensing layers. Full article
