Cumulative mistuning effects in electric vehicle wireless charging systems, arising from component tolerances, coil misalignments, and aging-induced drifts, can significantly degrade system performance. To mitigate this issue, this work establishes an analysis model for mistuned series–series-compensated wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Through equivalent simplification of mistuned parameters, we systematically examine the effects of compensation capacitances and coil inductances on input impedance, output power, and efficiency in SS-compensated topologies across wide load ranges and different coupling coefficients. Results reveal that transmitter-side parameter deviations exert more pronounced impacts on input impedance and power gain than receiver-side variations. Remarkably, under receiver-side inductance mistuning of −20%, a significant 32° shift in the input impedance angle was observed. Experimental validation on a 500 W prototype confirms ≤5% maximum deviation between calculated and measured values for efficiency, input impedance angle, and power gain. Full article

Blades are widely used in the engines of aerospace vehicles, fans of near-space aerostat, and other equipment, and they are the key to completing energy conversion and pressure adjustment of the capsule. Blade tip timing (BTT) is the most cost-efficient approach for the monitoring of blades. The reliability and validity of BTT is mainly investigated through numerical simulation and experimental verification. However, not all researchers are able to carry out the expensive and time-consuming task of rotating the blade test bench and its monitoring systems. Therefore, a good and easily understood simulator is necessary. In this paper, an effective BTT simulation model that is capable of considering various uncertainties such as installation errors, probe accuracy, sampling clock frequency, speed fluctuations, and mistuning is presented. A blade multi-harmonic vibration model is also presented, which is not only easy to implement but also simplifies the solution of dynamic equations. Also, the simulation results show that the proposed model is accurate and consistent with the experimental results. This will help researchers to achieve an improved understanding of BTT and form the basis for conducting research in related areas in a short period of time. Full article

One of the most effective methods to limit the mechanical vibrations of bladed disks is the use of friction damping at mechanical joint interfaces. Unfortunately, dedicated tests to assess the impact of mistuning and the effectiveness of friction dampers are uncommon. This paper presents an original design of an academic demonstrator to perform an experimental analysis of the dynamic response of a tip-free bladed disk with under-platform dampers (UPDs), including an identification of intrinsic and contact mistuning introduced by the UPDs. The 48-blade disk was tested in a vacuum spinning rig by using permanent magnets. Vibration measurements were performed with the Blade Tip-Timing system. Tests were simulated using the Policontact tool, which predicted the average experimental nonlinear response in the presence of UPD, confirming the tool’s ability to capture the general nonlinear dynamic behavior of the mistuned bladed disk. This study presents a novel approach combining experimental Blade Tip Timing (BTT) with numerical simulations using Policontact (ver. 3.0) software and a model update based on experimental evidence to validate nonlinear dynamic responses. It distinguishes between intrinsic and contact mistuning effects, providing new insights into their impact on bladed disk vibrations. Additionally, a comparison of aluminum and steel UPDs reveals that steel offers a 26% greater damping efficiency due to its higher density and preload, significantly improving vibration reduction. In this study, a thorough experimental investigation of the synchronous blade vibrations of a radial turbine is performed for different IGV configurations. First, the blade modes are measured experimentally and calculated numerically. Subsequently, the vibrations are recorded with two redundant measurement systems during real operation. Strain gauges were applied on certain blades, while a commercial blade-tip-timing system is used for the measurement of blade deflections. The experimentally determined vibration properties are compared with numerical estimations. Initially, the vibrations recorded with the “nominal” IGV were presented. This IGV primarily generates nodal diameter (ND) 0 vibrations. Subsequently, the impact of two different IGV configurations is examined. First, a mistuned IGV, which has the same number of vanes as the “nominal” IGV is examined. By intentionally varying the distance between the vanes, additional low engine order excitations are generated. Moreover, an IGV with a higher number of vanes is employed to induce excitations at higher frequency modes and ND6 vibrations. Certain vibrations are consistently measured across all IGV configurations, which cannot be attributed to the spiral turbine casing. In addition, a turbine–compressor interaction has been observed. In this paper, theoretical analysis and system simulations are carried out to study the effects of the transmitter-compensated inductance mistuning on charging power, transfer efficiency, and the phase angle between the input voltage and input current in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system using inductor/capacitor/capacitor-series (LCC-S) topology. To cancel out the effects of the mistuning, an integrated transmitting coil design scheme is proposed, in which the transmitting coil is unipolar while the compensation coils are bipolar. Theoretical calculations and simulations are performed to show that the proposed compensation inductor guarantees the stability of the compensation inductance when the permeability of the magnetic sheet changes. Furthermore, it is verified that by using the integrated structure the effect of the horizontal misalignment can be ignored. Finally, an experimental platform is built to validate the above results of theoretical analysis and simulation. This proves that the theoretical analysis and simulation results are consistent with each other, which confirmed the stability and feasibility of the integrated compensation inductor. Full article

Integrating existing liquid storage and supply tanks in buildings with tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) are significant for reducing the effective cost of TLDs. However, existing water supplement devices for fire-suppression liquid tanks may overfill with water, which leads to TLD mistuning. To overcome this problem, a passive liquid control system named TLD with a stable replenishment sub-tank system (TLD-SRS) is proposed. The system, which consists of an additional sub-tank connected to the main tank and a floating ball, replenishes liquid in the TLD automatically. The system can avoid vibration interference and maintain the normal operation of the passive replenishment system under usual wind loads. According to the studies of tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD), the proposed TLD with a stable replenishment sub-tank system (TLD-SRS) uses simple devices to ensure that the liquid level in the TLD is steady at the target liquid level with a floating ball. The TLD-SRS is verified on a large-scale TLD shaking table experiment. The overshoot, which is the percentage of liquid that exceeds the target volume of TLD is calculated during sloshing with wind loads. Compared with TLD installed with a regular liquid replenishment device, the proposed TLD-SRS significantly reduces the overshoot of liquid and acceleration on the roof of the building. Full article

The wind tunnel facility at the Centro de Tecnologías Aeronáuticas was used to perform a set of experiments to study the effect of intentional mistuning on the forced response behavior of an aerodynamically unstable low-pressure turbine rotor. The intentional mistuning patterns were implemented by adding a small extra mass to some of the blades. The forced response of the rotor was therefore expected to show two resonance peaks with similar amplitudes, corresponding, respectively, to the vibration frequencies of the blades with and without added mass. However, on the post-processing of the measurements, some anomalous behavior was observed. Near resonance, the system response was synchronous with the forcing, and the frequency sweeps exhibited two resonance peaks, but it was found that the two peaks were clearly different, with the peak at lower frequency showing a much higher vibration amplitude than the high-frequency peak, and with some blades responding at both frequencies with a similar amplitude. In order to give a correct interpretation of the experimental results, a reduced-order model is derived that takes into account only the traveling wave modes coupled by the mistuning. This model, although extremely simple, is capable of reproducing the unexpected behavior of the experiments, and gives a clean explanation of the system response. It is shown that the relative size of the mistuning with respect to the frequency difference of the involved traveling-wave modes is the key parameter for the appearance of this phenomenon. Vibration measurements of turbomachinery components are of utmost importance to characterize the dynamic behavior of rotating machines, thus preventing undesired operating conditions. Local techniques such as strain gauges or laser Doppler vibrometers are usually adopted to collect vibration data. However, these approaches provide single-point and generally 1D measurements. The present work proposes an optical technique, which uses two low-speed cameras, a multimedia projector, and three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) to provide full-field measurements of a bladed disk undergoing harmonic response analysis (i.e., pure sinusoidal excitation) in the kHz range. The proposed approach exploits a downsampling strategy to overcome the limitations introduced by low-speed cameras. The developed experimental setup was used to measure the response of a bladed disk subjected to an excitation frequency above 6 kHz, providing a deep insight in the deformed shapes, in terms of amplitude and phase distributions, which could not be feasible with single-point sensors. Results demonstrated the system’s effectiveness in measuring amplitudes of few microns, also evidencing blade mistuning effects. A deeper insight into the deformed shape analysis was provided by considering the phase maps on the entire blisk geometry, and phase variation lines were observed on the blades for high excitation frequency. Bladed disks are key components of turbomachines and their dynamic behavior is strongly conditioned by their small accidental lack of symmetry referred to as blade mistuning. The experimental identification of mistuned disks is complicated due to several reasons related both to measurement and data processing issues. This paper describes the realization of a test rig designed to investigate the behavior of mistuned disks and develop or validate data processing techniques for system identification. To simplify experiments, using the opposite than in the real situation, the disk is fixed, while the excitation is rotating. The response measured during an experiment carried out in the resonance-crossing condition is used to compare three alternative techniques to estimate the frequency-response function of the disk. As the main components of the rotor system of aero-engines and other rotating machinery equipment, the bladed disk system has high requirements on its structure design, safety and stability. Taking the rotor disk system of aero-engines as the research object, modal calculation of the rotor disk system was based on the group theory algorithm, and using the fine sand movement on the experimental disk to express the disk vibration shape. The experimental vibration mode is used to compare with the finite element calculation results to verify the reliability of the finite element analysis. Study on the effect of dissonance parameter changes on the bladed disk system vibration characteristics concluded that the vibration mode trends of the blisk system and the disc are, basically, consistent. As the mass of the blade increases, the modal frequencies of the entire blisk system gradually decrease, and the amplitude slightly increases. When the mass increases at different parts of the blade, the effect on the modal frequencies of the bladed disk system are not obvious. When the bladed disk system vibrates at low frequency, the disc will not vibrate and each blade will vibrate irregularly. The bladed disk should be avoided to work in this working area for a long time, so as not to cause fatigue damage or even fracture of some blades. Full article

At present, exhaust gas turbochargers not only form the basis for the economical operation of petrol, diesel or gas engines of all power categories, but also have an irreplaceable role on reducing their emissions. In order to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines, various systems are being developed, all of which have a turbocharger as an important component. Demands on turbocharger system durability and reliability keep growing, which requires the application of increasingly advanced computational and experimental methods at the development beginning of these systems. The design of turbochargers starts with a mathematical description of their rotationally cyclic impellers. However, mistuning, i.e., a slight individual blade property deviation from the intended design parameters, leads to a disturbance of the rotational cyclic symmetry. This article deals with the effects of manufacturing-related deviations on the structural dynamic behaviour of real turbine rotors. As opposed to methods exploiting expensive scanning vibrometers for experimental modal analysis or time-consuming accurate measurement of the geometry of individual blades using 3D optical scanners. A suitable microphone and a finite element rotor wheel model are the basis of this new method. After comparing the described acoustic approach with the laser vibrometer procedure, the results seemed to be practically identical. In comparison with the laser technique the unquestionable added value of this new method is the fact that it brings a significant reduction in the financial requirements for laboratory equipment. Another important benefit is that the measuring process of bladed wheel mistuning is significantly less time-consuming. Full article

The present paper is focused on the post processing of the data coming from the Blade Tip-Timing (BTT) sensors in the case where two very close peaks are present in the frequency response of the vibrating system. This type of dynamic response with two very close peaks can occur quite often in bladed disks. It is related to the fact that the bladed disk is not perfectly cyclic symmetric and the so called “mistuning” is present. A method based on the fitting of the BTT sensors data by means of a 2 degrees of freedom (2DOF) dynamic model is proposed. Nonlinear least square optimization technique is employed for identification of the vibration characteristics. A numerical test case based on a lump parameter model of a bladed disk assembly is used to simulate different response curves and the corresponding sensors signals. The Frequency Response Function (FRF) constructed at the resonance region is compared with the traditional Sine fitting results, the resonance frequencies and damping values estimated by the fitting procedure are also reported. Accurate predictions are achieved and the results demonstrate the considerable capacity of the 2DOF method to be used as a standalone or as a complement to the standard Sine fitting method. Radial turbine and compressor wheels form essential cornerstones of modern internal combustion engines in terms of economy, efficiency and, in particular, environmental compatibility. As a result of the introduction of exhaust gas turbochargers in the extremely important global market for diesel engines, higher engine efficiencies are possible, which in turn reduce fuel consumption. The associated reduced exhaust emissions can answer questions that results from environmentally relevant aspects of the engine development. In shipping, the international Maritime Organisation (IMO) prescribes the step-by-step reduction of nitrogen oxide and other types of emissions. To reduce these emissions, various systems are being developed, in which turbochargers are an important part. The requirements for the reliability and service life of turbochargers are constantly increasing. Turbocharger blade vibration is one of the most important problems to be solved when designing the rotors. In the case of real rotors, so-called mistuning arises, which is a slight deviation of the properties of the individual blades from the design parameters. The article deals with an effective method of mistuning identification for cases of integrated bladed discs of marine engine turbochargers. Unlike approaches that use costly scanning laser Doppler vibrometers, this method is based on using only a simple laser vibrometer in combination with a computational model of the integrated bladed disc. The added value of this method is, in particular, a significant reduction in the cost of laboratory equipment and a reduction in the time required to obtain the results. Full article

An enhanced SSDI (synchronized switch damping on inductor) approach is proposed to suppress the vibration of bladed disks in aero-engines. Different from the authors’ former work (MSSP, 2017; JIMSS, 2018) where a local SSDI circuit is shunted to the piezoelectric materials at each blade sector, in this work two blade sectors are interconnected by a shared SSDI circuit. In this way, the switching action of SSDI is triggered by the relative displacement between two blade sectors. The feasibility of the dual-connected SSDI is numerically examined by a 2-DOF (degree-of-freedom) mechanical system, and further experimentally validated on a single-beam and a double-beam system. Results show that the damping performance increases with the amplitude of relative displacement. This feature is especially favorable for the application of blisks where the blade normally vibrates in different amplitudes and phases. Eventually, we conduct numerical simulation on the forced response of mistuned bladed disk undergoing travelling wave excitation. Results show that the dual-connected configuration can reduce at least half the number of switching shunts while maintain nearly the same performance as the conventional (local) SSDI. Full article

Magnetic-resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) has become a reliable contactless source of power for a wide range of applications. WPT spans different power levels ranging from low-power implantable devices up to high-power electric vehicles (EV) battery charging. The transmission range and efficiency of WPT have been reasonably enhanced by resonating the transmitter and receiver coils at a common frequency. Nevertheless, matching between resonance in the transmitter and receiver is quite cumbersome, particularly in single-transmitter multi-receiver systems. The resonance frequency in transmitter and receiver tank circuits has to be perfectly matched, otherwise power transfer capability is greatly degraded. This paper discusses the mistuning effect of parallel-compensated receivers, and thereof a novel dynamic frequency tuning method and related circuit topology and control is proposed and characterized in the system application. The proposed method is based on the concept of switch-mode gyrator emulating variable lossless inductors oriented to enable self-tunability in WPT receivers. Full article
