Upright-posture motorcycle crashes against steel safety barriers (SSBs) often result in severe upper-body injuries due to the sharp upper edge of the rail. While solutions for sliding crashes on curves, called a ‘motorcyclist-friendly barrier’, are already implemented in practice, protective measures for upright-posture impacts remain underdeveloped. This study systematically reviews patents and patent applications addressing upper guardrail protection for motorcyclists. We identified and analysed a small number of existing innovations aimed at mitigating the consequences of upright crashes. The selected solutions were evaluated according to their technical design, ease of installation, potential for recycling, environmental compatibility, and expected costs. Our comparative analysis reveals that while some patents or patent applications offer promising features, such as flexible caps, bent plates, or modular attachments, none comprehensively address all safety, environmental, and economic requirements. The findings provide a basis for further development of motorcyclist-friendly SSB designs and suggest specific criteria that should be included in future guidelines and standard updates. Full article

This study presents a systematic bibliometric review of wearable technologies aimed at vulnerable road user (VRU) safety, covering publications from 2000 to 2025. Guided by PRISMA procedures and a PICo-based search strategy, 58 records were extracted and analyzed in CiteSpace, yielding visualizations of collaboration networks, publication trajectories, and intellectual structures. The results indicate a clear evolution from single-purpose, stand-alone devices to integrated ecosystem solutions that address the needs of diverse VRU groups. Six dominant knowledge clusters emerged—street-crossing assistance, obstacle avoidance, human–computer interaction, cyclist safety, blind navigation, and smart glasses. Comparative analysis across pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, and persons with disabilities shows three parallel transitions: single- to multisensory interfaces, reactive to predictive systems, and isolated devices to V2X-enabled ecosystems. Contemporary research emphasizes context-adaptive interfaces, seamless V2X integration, and user-centered design, and future work should focus on lightweight communication protocols, adaptive sensory algorithms, and personalized safety profiles. The review provides a consolidated knowledge map to inform researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers striving for inclusive and proactive road safety solutions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) have been found to be the leading factor in disabilities and absenteeism among workers. Despite their growing numbers, WMSD prevalence and risk factors among food delivery riders remain underexplored. Given the high WMSD prevalence among motorcyclists and the rising road traffic accidents (RTAs) among delivery riders in Malaysia, a cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the determinants of WMSDs among this neglected group. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic factors, work-related factors, and a validated Malay-translated Standardised Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (M-SNMQ) was used to evaluate the WMSD symptoms and related factors among 191 food delivery riders in Eastern Peninsular Malaysia. An ergonomic risk assessment using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method and whole-body vibration (WBV) measurement was also conducted to elicit the WMSD risk and vibration exposure among the riders. The determinants of WMSDs were analysed using multiple logistic regression using SPSS 20.4. Results: This study revealed a high prevalence of WMSDs (74.9%) among food delivery riders in Eastern Peninsular Malaysia. Furthermore, three factors were found to be significantly associated with WMSDs among riders, namely the increasing average working days (aOR = 2.00; 95% CI = 1.34, 2.98; p = 0.001), whole-body vibration (WBV) above the exposure action value (EAV) limit (aOR = 2.71; 95% CI = 1.13, 6.53; p = 0.026), and not exercising before work (aOR = 21.63; 95% CI = 7.45, 62.79; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Targeted interventions are essential to mitigate ergonomic risks and enhance rider safety. Occupational health policies should prioritise pre-work exercise and WBV exposure reduction to minimise musculoskeletal strain. Future longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate the long-term impact of these risks on riders’ health. Full article

Motorcycles are a prominent contributor to most fatalities arising from traffic incidents, primarily due to drivers’ failure to adhere to traffic laws. Notably, differences in traffic violation frequency between urban and rural motorcyclists can be ascribed to variations in law enforcement practices and security budget allocations between these areas. This study aims to identify the key determinants influencing the frequency of traffic violations across these distinct geographical regions. The investigation incorporates independent variables such as personal demographics (including gender and age), driving experience, and attitudes toward traffic regulations. The analysis involved the formulation and examination of two separate logit models, each corresponding to urban and non-urban characteristics. The outcomes of a transferability test highlighted distinct disparities between the two models, with the rural model demonstrating a higher number of significant variables. In both models, certain variables consistently influenced the frequency of traffic violations. Lower violation frequencies were associated with factors such as specific age ranges, frequency of driving, and possession of a driver’s license. The insights derived from this study were leveraged to formulate policy recommendations to curb traffic violations among motorcyclists, contributing to enhancing overall traffic safety. Full article

The transition towards a sustainable mobility model encourages an increase in the use of soft modes of transport, and thus an increase in the number of vulnerable road users, especially in urban areas. In Spain, this group of users, comprising pedestrians, cyclists, users of personal mobility vehicles and motorcyclists, accounted for 62,258 victims in road accidents in 2023, 46% of the total, with 7258 dead or seriously injured representing 65.6% of the total. Different strategies to protect vulnerable road users, including communication campaigns, are regularly developed to increase safe travel behaviour. In this context, this study analyses the campaigns issued by the Directorate General of Traffic since 1960 aimed at vulnerable road users. Only 28 campaigns met the established inclusion criteria, representing 23.5% of the total. Thus, the period 2011–2024 has seen the lowest prevalence of this type of campaign, coinciding with a context characterised by the emergence of new forms of micro-mobility that are more sustainable but also more exposed to risks. Due to this complex environment, it is recommended to increase the prevalence of campaigns targeted at vulnerable users and to maximise their effectiveness using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data, and delivered through a combination of traditional and digital media. Motorcyclists remain a disproportionately large group of vulnerable road users, with fatality rates significantly higher than that in other road groups. Additionally, fatal accidents involving motorcyclists have a more slowly decreasing trend in comparison to that of other road users, while the number of this kind of users is growing fast. For all these reasons, there is a need to understand what the key factors leading to fatal accidents are in order to identify the possible measures to minimize the accidents themselves or at least their consequences. This would permit, indeed, to positively impact the road traffic system, leading to the creation of the safest road traffic system possible, as it is the goal of the Sustainable Safety approach. The aim of this study is to dive into the mentioned problem, analyzing fatal motorcycle accidents in Slovenia over a decade, highlighting the key factors contributing to these incidents. By integrating data from four databases, the study evaluated accident trends, infrastructural elements, and rider behavior through a multi-stage analysis. Firstly, data were collected from four national, up-to-date databases that contain information about road accidents themselves, the road infrastructure, additional police data, and media descriptions. After merging this information into one comprehensive database, where each row represents all the data available for one accident, a general analysis of accidents’ trends over the considered 10-year period was developed, considering at first all fatal road accidents, then deepening it to accidents caused by a motorcyclist, and finally to single-vehicle accidents. A statistical analysis followed, aimed at identifying a statistical correlation between the accidents and the factors leading to them. The results of the first accident analysis indicated that excessive speed, incorrect driving direction, and overtaking maneuvers are the primary causes of fatal accidents, especially on non-urban roads preferred by motorcyclists. Single-vehicle accidents frequently involve collisions with roadside objects, including safety barriers and poles, underscoring the need for targeted infrastructural improvements. The following correlation analysis revealed that a total of seven factors were statistically significant: three human factors (age, gender, experience)—which were the ones with the strongest correlations—one infrastructural factor (pavement width), and three factors belonging to external conditions (accident type, cause, and location). Of these, four were positively correlated to the causer, while three, i.e., pavement width, causes, and road location, were negatively correlated. This study provides a foundation for future research on less severe accidents and proactive risk behavior analysis, aiming to improve motorcyclist safety comprehensively. Full article

Pavement (or road) markings play an important role in road safety, influencing the dynamics of road users through their skid resistance properties. This study provides a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of international perspectives on the skid resistance of pavement markings and their requirements. It examines marking skid test results across various regions, including North America, Europe, and other parts of the world, and emphasizes the impact of different materials and test environments on skid resistance. The study also reviews current skid resistance standards and guidelines, from North American state-level standards to European and global specifications. Furthermore, it discusses the safety implications of these standards for diverse road users, especially motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians. In conclusion, this paper highlights the importance of further innovation and consistency in skid resistance testing and standards to improve road safety. Full article

In response to the growing concerns regarding motorcyclists’ safety and advancements in the motorcycle industry, this study investigated the potential of natural fibers as a sustainable approach for enhancing helmet protection, thus replacing the traditional use of expanded polystyrene. Utilizing statistical tools such as the Shapiro–Wilk test, Chauvenet’s criterion, and the interquartile range, we compared the impact energy absorption of composites reinforced with natural fibers, including sugarcane bagasse, coconut, and sisal, added to expanded polyurethane prototypes. The results, evaluated through confidence intervals, indicated that composites reinforced with 5% sugarcane bagasse, 5% and 10% coconut, and 10% and 15% sisal exhibited significantly superior impact absorption performance compared to pure expanded polyurethane. Composites with agave sisalana fibers exhibited low variability and reliable performance, with the 10% concentration showing the best results. Sugarcane bagasse fiber demonstrated strong stability, especially at a 5% concentration. Coconut fiber performed well at both 5% and 10% concentrations but showed the greatest variability among the fibers tested. These findings underscore the potential of natural fibers in enhancing helmet safety and suggest promising directions for future research into the ideal composite materials for motorcycle helmets, an inquiry that is currently underway. Background: Despite improvements in technology and safety measures, injuries from collisions involving motor vehicles (CIMVs) continue to be prevalent. Therefore, our goal is to investigate the different patterns of head injuries associated with CIMVs. Method: This is a single-center, retrospective study of patients with motor vehicle-related trauma between 1 January 2016–31 December 2023. Patients were identified based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) injury codes and the Abbreviated Injury Severity (AIS) for body region involvement. Result: 536 patients met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the injured population includes pedestrians (46.8%), followed by motorcycle drivers (25.2%), bicyclists (18.7%), and motor vehicle drivers (9.3%). The male-to-female ratios for bicyclists and motorcyclists were 13.7:1 and 11.9:1, respectively, which is higher compared with motor vehicle occupants and pedestrians, with ratios of 2.3:1 and 1.5:1. Patients with blunt trauma (99.63%) were higher than penetrating trauma (0.37%). In most cases, the head had the highest AIS score, with a mean of 3.7. Additionally, the median Injury Severity Score (ISS) was 20. Skull fractures were the most prevalent, followed by hemorrhages, lacerations, contusions, and abrasions. Conclusions: The most prevalent injuries were head injuries and fractures. Fractures were the most common, followed by hemorrhage, laceration, contusion, and abrasion. These findings underscore the high incidence of TBI and fractures in such CIMVs, highlighting the need for targeted trauma interventions and the need for injury prevention strategies to mitigate these severe outcomes. Due to their high fatality rate, motorcycles, often referred to as “donorcycles” in the U.S., present unique safety challenges. In Hungary, motorcycle safety remains a critical issue despite a relatively low per capita rate of motor vehicle deaths, largely due to limited ownership and recognition. This study examines historical trends in motorcycle use in Hungary and the economic factors influencing their current prevalence. By emphasizing the crucial role of helmets and safety gear, road conditions, and environmental factors, this paper provides actionable recommendations to improve motorcycle safety in Győr and the surrounding regions. Implementing these recommendations stands to significantly reduce accidents and save lives, ensuring safer roads for all. Full article

This study aimed to identify and compare the risk factors associated with motorcycle crash severity during both daytime and nighttime, for single and multivehicle incidents in Thailand using 2021–2024 data. The research employed the XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting) method for statistical analysis and extensively examined the temporal instability of risk factors. The results highlight the importance of features impacting the injury severity of roadway collisions across various conditions. For single motorcycle crashes, the key risk factors included speeding, early morning incidents, off-road events, and long holidays. In multivehicle crashes, rear-end collisions, interactions with large vehicles, and collisions involving other motorcycles or passenger cars were linked to increased injury severity. The findings indicate that the important factors associated with motorcyclist injury severity in roadway crashes vary depending on the type of crash and time of day. These insights are valuable for policymakers and relevant authorities in developing targeted interventions to enhance road safety and mitigate the incidence of severe and fatal motorcycle crashes. The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Fatal Road-Traffic Accidents: A Five-Year Study on Medicolegal Autopsies in Timis County, Romania

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) represent the key sign of the level of road safety. Romania once held the record for road deaths among European Union (EU) countries and as of 2023, it came second place. It is of utmost importance to assess whether measures that restricted human mobility during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to a significant reduction in road fatalities. This study assesses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on victims of fatal RTAs by analyzing medicolegal autopsies from the Timisoara Institute of Legal Medicine (TILM), Timis County, Romania. Materials and methods: Medicolegal autopsy records of RTA victims from TILM in a 5-year period (2017–2021) were analyzed. Results: 395 cases (10.5%) were represented by victims of fatal RTAs. The reduction in the number of cases in the pandemic period was not statistically significant (p = 0.061) compared to the pre-pandemic period, but the number of victims of RTAs decreased by 17.6%. This highlights the importance of understanding the role of other risk factors in fatal RTAs, since a lesser volume of traffic did not cause a significant decrease in road fatalities. Male victims were predominant, with 18–50 years being the most affected age group. In the pandemic period, the most affected age groups were 31–40 (18.5%), followed closely by 41–50 (17.6%) and 18–30 (16.7%). In the pre-pandemic period, the first place was held by people in the age interval of 61–70 (20.5%), followed by 18–30 (19.2%). Drivers were the most involved type of road user, and a slight increase in the proportion of cyclists (13.9% from 10.5%) and motorcyclists (6.5% from 5.9%) was noted. Conclusions: Our findings show that measures implemented to control the COVID-19 pandemic may have had a positive effect on the reduction of RTAs, as shown by the information based on medicolegal autopsies in Timis County, Romania, but more attention needs to be focused on other risk factors. Further studies need to identify reasons for the small reduction in fatal injuries when the volume of traffic was reduced during mandated national lockdown. Full article

This study explores the potential of online traffic safety education for adolescent motorcyclists in Pakistan. An e-learning platform, “Route 2 School” (R2S), was developed focusing on traffic knowledge, situation awareness, risk detection, and risk management. Male students (14–18 years) who commute to school by motorcycle were divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), both completing pre- and post-measurement questionnaires. The EG showed significant improvement in knowledge, risk detection, and risk management compared to the CG, but not in situation awareness. Participants reported increased traffic safety awareness and suggested adding more interactive elements. The R2S platform’s scores revealed better performance in risk detection and risk management modules than situation awareness. Time spent on modules varied, with situation awareness requiring the most time. Adolescents expressed satisfaction with the platform, acknowledging its role in increasing traffic awareness. This study provides initial insights into the effectiveness of online traffic safety education in Pakistan, highlighting the potential to address the lack of comprehensive traffic safety education in schools. Further research and stakeholder engagement are recommended to integrate such platforms into formal education, potentially reducing traffic-related injuries among adolescent motorcyclists in developing countries. This research endeavors to achieve three primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to develop a measurement model capable of assessing the motorcycle riding behavior of middle-aged individuals in Thailand. The construction of this model integrates the motorcycle rider behavior questionnaire (MRBQ) with statistical and descriptive analyses. Secondly, the research examines the accuracy of the measurement model using a factor analysis approach, comprising both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Lastly, the study aims to furnish the people of Thailand with a set of guidelines for self-assessment of their motorcycle riding habits. The examination involves 399 middle-aged motorcycle riders aged 35 years or older, a significant majority of whom (81%) possess the requisite licenses for motorcycle operation, with the majority (83%) accumulating over a decade of riding experience. Through analysis, a set of 39 items capturing nuanced behaviors exhibited by middle-aged motorcyclists in Thailand is identified. These items are categorized into four distinct clusters: speed violations, control errors, traffic errors, and adherence to safety equipment protocols. The utilization of the MRBQ in this study holds significant importance, as it provides valuable insights into the riding practices of the Thai population. The resultant findings hold the potential to inform safety initiatives and strategies aimed at enhancing the overall motorcycle riding experience. Full article

In this study, we introduce an innovative methodology for the detection of helmet usage violations among motorcyclists, integrating the YOLOv8 object detection algorithm with deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGANs). The objective of this research is to enhance the precision of existing helmet violation detection techniques, which are typically reliant on manual inspection and susceptible to inaccuracies. The proposed methodology involves model training on an extensive dataset comprising both authentic and synthetic images, and demonstrates high accuracy in identifying helmet violations, including scenarios with multiple riders. Data augmentation, in conjunction with synthetic images produced by DCGANs, is utilized to expand the training data volume, particularly focusing on imbalanced classes, thereby facilitating superior model generalization to real-world circumstances. The stand-alone YOLOv8 model exhibited an F1 score of 0.91 for all classes at a confidence level of 0.617, whereas the DCGANs + YOLOv8 model demonstrated an F1 score of 0.96 for all classes at a reduced confidence level of 0.334. These findings highlight the potential of DCGANs in enhancing the accuracy of helmet rule violation detection, thus fostering safer motorcycling practices. Full article
