Reliable and fast communication between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) is essential for effective coordination in agricultural settings, particularly when human involvement is part of the system. This study systematically compares two communication architectures representing centralized and decentralized communication frameworks: (a) MAVLink (decentralized) and (b) Farm Management Information System (FMIS) (centralized). Field experiments were conducted in both empty field and orchard environments, using a rotary UAV for worker detection and a UGV responding to intent signaled through color-coded hats. Across 120 trials, the system performance was assessed in terms of communication reliability, latency, energy consumption, and responsiveness. FMIS consistently demonstrated higher message delivery success rates (97% in both environments) than MAVLink (83% in the empty field and 70% in the orchard). However, it resulted in higher UGV resource usage. Conversely, MAVLink achieved reduced UGV power draw and lower latency, but it was more affected by obstructed settings and also resulted in increased UAV battery consumption. In conclusion, MAVLink is suitable for time-sensitive operations that require rapid feedback, while FMIS is better suited for tasks that demand reliable communication in complex agricultural environments. Consequently, the selection between MAVLink and FMIS should be guided by the specific mission goals and environmental conditions. Full article

Global ambitions for net-zero emissions and resource circularity are propelling industry from linear “make-use-dispose”models toward closed-loop value creation. Remanufacturing, which aims to restore end-of-life products to a “like-new” condition, plays a central role in this transition. However, its stochastic inputs and complex, multi-stage processes pose significant challenges to traditional production planning methods. This study delivers an integrated overview of remanufacturing scheduling by combining a systematic bibliometric review of 190 publications (2005–2025) with a critical synthesis of modelling approaches and enabling technologies. The bibliometric results reveal five thematic clusters and a 14% annual growth rate, highlighting a shift from deterministic, shop-floor-focused models to uncertainty-aware, sustainability-oriented frameworks. The scheduling problems are formalised to capture features arising from variable core quality, multi-phase precedence, and carbon reduction goals, in both centralised and cloud-based systems. Advances in human–robot disassembly, vision-based inspection, hybrid repair, and digital testing demonstrate feedback-rich environments that increasingly integrate planning and execution. A comparative analysis shows that, while mixed-integer programming and metaheuristics perform well in small static settings, dynamic and large-scale contexts benefit from reinforcement learning and hybrid decomposition models. Finally, future directions for dynamic, collaborative, carbon-conscious, and digital-twin-driven scheduling are outlined and investigated. Full article

This paper introduces the overall design plan, development timeline, and preliminary progress of the Autonomous Pit Exploration System project. This project aims to develop an advanced multi-robot system for the efficient inspection of nuclear waste-storage tank pits. The project is structured into three phases: Phase 1 involves data collection and interface definition in collaboration with Hanford Site experts and university partners, focusing on tank riser geometry and hardware solutions. Phase 2 includes the selection of sensors and robot components, detailed mechanical design, and prototyping. Phase 3 integrates all components into a cohesive system managed by a master control package which also incorporates digital twin and surrogate models, and culminates in comprehensive testing and validation at a simulated tank pit at the Idaho National Laboratory. Additionally, the system’s communication design ensures coordinated operation through shared data, power, and control signals. For transportation and deployment, an electric vehicle (EV) is chosen to support the system for a full 10 h shift with better regulatory compliance for field deployment. A telescopic arm design is selected for its simple configuration and superior reach capability and controllability. Preliminary testing utilizes an educational robot to demonstrate the feasibility of splitting computational tasks between edge and cloud computers. Successful simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) tasks validate our distributed computing approach. More design considerations are also discussed, including radiation hardness assurance, SLAM performance, software transferability, and digital twinning strategies. Full article

The construction industry faces significant challenges due to the physically demanding and hazardous nature of tasks such as manual filling of expansion joints with mastic. Automating mastic filling presents additional difficulties due to the variability of mastic density with temperature, which creates a constantly changing environment that requires adaptive control strategies to ensure consistent application quality. This pilot study focuses on testing a new human–robot collaborative approach for automating the mastic application in concrete expansion joints. The system learns the task from demonstrations performed by expert construction operators teleoperating the robot. This study evaluates the usability, efficiency, and adoption of robotic assistance in joint-filling tasks compared to traditional manual methods. The study analyzes execution time and joint quality measurements, psychophysiological signal analysis, and post-task user feedback. This multi-source approach enables a comprehensive assessment of task performance and both objective and subjective evaluations of technology acceptance. The findings underscore the effectiveness of automated systems in improving safety and productivity on construction sites, while also identifying key areas for technological improvement. Full article

To address the limitations of mobile robots in path planning within farmland-specific environments, this paper proposes a biomimetic model: Multi-strategy Collaborative Evolution Honey Badger Algorithm (MCEHBA), MCEHBA achieves improvements through the following strategies: firstly, integrating a sinusoidal function-based nonlinear convergence factor to dynamically balance global exploration and local exploitation; secondly, combining the differential evolution strategy to enhance population diversity, and utilizing gravity-centred opposition-based learning to improve solution space search efficiency; finally, constructing good point set initialization and decentralized boundary constraint handling strategy to further increase convergence accuracy and speed. This paper validates the effectiveness of the optimization strategy and the performance of MCEHBA through the CEC2017 benchmark function set, and assesses the statistical significance of the results using the Friedman test and Nemenyi test. The findings demonstrate that MCEHBA exhibits excellent optimization capabilities. Additionally, this study applied MCEHBA to solve three engineering application problems and compared its results with six other algorithms, showing that MCEHBA achieved the minimum objective function values in all three cases. Finally, simulation experiments were conducted in three farmland scenarios of varying scales, with comparative tests against three state-of-the-art algorithms. The results indicate that MCEHBA generates paths with minimized total costs, demonstrating superior global convergence and engineering applicability. Full article

The primary challenge that robots face in disaster rescue is to precisely and efficiently construct disaster maps and achieve autonomous navigation. This paper proposes a method for air–ground collaborative map construction. It utilizes the flight capability of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to achieve rapid three-dimensional space coverage and complex terrain crossing for rapid and efficient map construction. Meanwhile, it utilizes the stable operation capability of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and the ground detail survey capability to achieve precise map construction. The maps constructed by the two are accurately integrated to obtain precise disaster environment maps. Among them, the map construction and positioning technology is based on the FAST LiDAR–inertial odometry 2 (FAST-LIO2) framework, enabling the robot to achieve precise positioning even in complex environments, thereby obtaining more accurate point cloud maps. Before conducting map fusion, the point cloud is preprocessed first to reduce the density of the point cloud and also minimize the interference of noise and outliers. Subsequently, the coarse and fine registrations of the point clouds are carried out in sequence. The coarse registration is used to reduce the initial pose difference of the two point clouds, which is conducive to the subsequent rapid and efficient fine registration. The coarse registration uses the improved sample consensus initial alignment (SAC-IA) algorithm, which significantly reduces the registration time compared with the traditional SAC-IA algorithm. The precise registration uses the voxelized generalized iterative closest point (VGICP) algorithm. It has a faster registration speed compared with the generalized iterative closest point (GICP) algorithm while ensuring accuracy. In reinforcement learning navigation, we adopted the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) path planning algorithm. Compared with the deep Q-network (DQN) algorithm and the A* algorithm, the DDPG algorithm is more conducive to the robot choosing a better route in a complex and unknown environment, and at the same time, the motion trajectory is smoother. This paper adopts Gazebo simulation. Compared with physical robot operation, it provides a safe, controllable, and cost-effective environment, supports efficient large-scale experiments and algorithm debugging, and also supports flexible sensor simulation and automated verification, thereby optimizing the overall testing process. Pipelines, as critical infrastructure in energy transmission, municipal facilities, industrial production, and specialized equipment, are essential to national economic security and social stability. This paper systematically reviews the domestic and international research status of pipeline in-line inspection (ILI) technologies, with a focus on four major technological systems: electromagnetic, acoustic, optical, and robotic technologies. The operational principles, application scenarios, advantages, and limitations of each technology are analyzed in detail. Although existing technologies have achieved significant progress in defect detection accuracy and environmental adaptability, they still face challenges including insufficient adaptability to complex environments, the inherent trade-off between detection accuracy and efficiency, and high equipment costs. Future research directions are identified as follows: intelligent algorithm optimization for multi-physics collaborative detection, miniaturized and integrated design of inspection devices, and scenario-specific development for specialized environments. Through technological innovation and multidisciplinary integration, pipeline ILI technologies are expected to progressively realize efficient, precise, and low-cost lifecycle safety monitoring of pipelines. The integration of robotic agents into complex indoor construction environments is increasing, particularly through human–robot collaboration (HRC) and multi-robot collaboration (MRC). These collaborative frameworks hold great potential to enhance productivity and safety. However, indoor construction environments present unique challenges, such as dynamic layouts, constrained spaces, and variable lighting conditions, which complicate the safe and effective deployment of collaborative robot teams. Existing studies have primarily addressed various HRC and MRC challenges in manufacturing, logistics, and outdoor construction, with limited attention given to indoor construction settings. To this end, this review presents a comprehensive analysis of human–robot and multi-robot collaboration methods within various indoor domains and critically evaluates the potential of adopting these methods for indoor construction. This review presents three key contributions: (1) it provides a structured evaluation of current human–robot interaction techniques and safety-enhancing methods; (2) it presents a summary of state-of-the-art multi-robot collaboration frameworks, including task allocation, mapping, and coordination; and (3) it identifies major limitations in current systems and provides research directions for enabling scalable, robust, and context-aware collaboration in indoor construction. By bridging the gap between current robotic collaboration methods and the needs of indoor construction, this review lays the foundation for the development of adaptive and optimized collaborative robot deployment frameworks for indoor built environments. With the growth of the global population and the increasing scarcity of arable land, traditional agricultural production is confronted with multiple challenges, such as efficiency improvement, precision operation, and sustainable development. The progressive advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has created a transformative opportunity for the intelligent upgrade of agricultural equipment. This article systematically presents recent progress in computer vision, machine learning (ML), and intelligent sensing. The key innovations are highlighted in areas such as object detection and recognition (e.g., a K-nearest neighbor (KNN) achieved 98% accuracy in distinguishing vibration signals across operation stages); autonomous navigation and path planning (e.g., a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-optimized task planner for multi-arm harvesting robots reduced execution time by 10.7%); state perception (e.g., a multilayer perceptron (MLP) yielded 96.9% accuracy in plug seedling health classification); and precision control (e.g., an intelligent multi-module coordinated control system achieved a transplanting efficiency of 5000 plants/h). The findings reveal a deep integration of AI models with multimodal perception technologies, significantly improving the operational efficiency, resource utilization, and environmental adaptability of agricultural equipment. This integration is catalyzing the transition toward intelligent, automated, and sustainable agricultural systems. Nevertheless, intelligent agricultural equipment still faces technical challenges regarding data sample acquisition, adaptation to complex field environments, and the coordination between algorithms and hardware. Looking ahead, the convergence of digital twin (DT) technology, edge computing, and big data-driven collaborative optimization is expected to become the core of next-generation intelligent agricultural systems. These technologies have the potential to overcome current limitations in perception and decision-making, ultimately enabling intelligent management and autonomous decision-making across the entire agricultural production chain. This article aims to provide a comprehensive foundation for advancing agricultural modernization and supporting green, sustainable development. Full article

Precise odor source localization in turbulent and sparse environments plays a vital role in enabling robotic systems for hazardous chemical monitoring and effective disaster response. To address this, we propose Cooperative Gravitational-Rényi Infotaxis (CGRInfotaxis), a distributed decision-optimization framework that combines multi-agent collaboration with hybrid cognitive strategy to improve search efficiency and robustness. The method integrates a gravitational potential field for rapid source convergence and Rényi divergence-based probabilistic exploration to handle sparse detections, dynamically balanced via a regulation factor. Particle filtering optimizes posterior probability estimation to autonomously refine search areas while preserving computational efficiency, alongside a distributed interactive-optimization mechanism for real-time decision updates through agent cooperation. The algorithm’s performance is evaluated in scenarios with fixed and randomized odor source locations, as well as with varying numbers of agents. Results demonstrate that CGRInfotaxis achieves a near-100% success rate with high consistency across diverse conditions, outperforming existing methods in stability and adaptability. Increasing the number of agents further enhances search efficiency without compromising reliability. These findings suggest that CGRInfotaxis significantly advances multi-agent odor source localization in turbulent, sparse environments, offering practical utility for real-world applications. Industrial robots are undergoing a transformative shift as Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven and bio-inspired control strategies unlock new levels of precision, adaptability, and multi-dimensional sustainability aligned with Industry 5.0 (energy efficiency, material circularity, and life-cycle emissions). This systematic review analyzes 160 peer-reviewed industrial robotics control studies (2023–2025), including an expanded bio-inspired/human-centric subset, to evaluate: (1) the dominant and emerging control methodologies; (2) the transformative role of digital twins and 5G-enabled connectivity; and (3) the persistent technical, ethical, and environmental challenges. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, the study employs a rigorous methodology, focusing on adaptive control, deep reinforcement learning (DRL), human–robot collaboration (HRC), and quantum-inspired algorithms. The key findings highlight up to 30% latency reductions in real-time optimization, up to 22% efficiency gains through digital twins, and up to 25% energy savings from bio-inspired designs (all percentage ranges are reported relative to the comparator baselines specified in the cited sources). However, critical barriers remain, including scalability limitations (with up to 40% higher computational demands) and cybersecurity vulnerabilities (with up to 20% exposure rates). The convergence of AI, bio-inspired systems, and quantum computing is poised to enable sustainable, autonomous, and human-centric robotics, yet requires standardized safety frameworks and hybrid architectures to fully support the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0. This review offers a strategic roadmap for future research and industrial adoption, emphasizing human-centric design, ethical frameworks, and circular-economy principles to address global manufacturing challenges. Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) is pivotal for flexible, worker-centric manufacturing in Industry 5.0, yet dynamic task allocation remains difficult because operator states—fatigue and skill—fluctuate abruptly. I address this gap with a hybrid framework that couples real-time perception and double-estimating reinforcement learning. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifies nine fatigue–skill combinations from synthetic physiological cues (heart-rate, blink rate, posture, wrist acceleration); its outputs feed a Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) whose state vector also includes task-queue and robot-status features. The DDQN optimises a multi-objective reward balancing throughput, workload and safety and executes at 10 Hz within a closed-loop pipeline implemented in MATLAB R2025a and RoboDK v5.9. Benchmarking on a 1000-episode HRC dataset (2500 allocations·episode−1) shows the hybrid CNN+DDQN controller raises throughput to 60.48 ± 0.08 tasks·min−1 (+21% vs. rule-based, +12% vs. SARSA, +8% vs. Dueling DQN, +5% vs. PPO), trims operator fatigue by 7% and sustains 99.9% collision-free operation (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.05; post-hoc power 1 − β = 0.87). Visual analyses confirm responsive task reallocation as fatigue rises or skill varies. The approach outperforms strong baselines (PPO, A3C, Dueling DQN) by mitigating Q-value over-estimation through double learning, providing robust policies under stochastic human states and offering a reproducible blueprint for multi-robot, Industry 5.0 factories. Future work will validate the controller on a physical Doosan H2017 cell and incorporate fairness constraints to avoid workload bias across multiple operators. Full article

Autonomous earthwork machinery is gaining traction as a means to boost productivity and safety on space-constrained urban sites, yet the fast-growing literature has not been fully integrated. To clarify current knowledge, we systematically searched Scopus and screened 597 records, retaining 157 peer-reviewed papers (2015–March 2025) that address autonomy, integrated control, or risk mitigation for excavators, bulldozers, and loaders. Descriptive statistics, VOSviewer mapping, and qualitative synthesis show the output rising rapidly and peaking at 30 papers in 2024, led by China, Korea, and the USA. Four tightly linked themes dominate: perception-driven machine autonomy, IoT-enabled integrated control systems, multi-sensor safety strategies, and the first demonstrations of fleet-level collaboration (e.g., coordinated excavator clusters and unmanned aerial vehicle and unmanned ground vehicle (UAV–UGV) site preparation). Advances include centimeter-scale path tracking, real-time vision-light detection and ranging (LiDAR) fusion and geofenced safety envelopes, but formal validation protocols and robust inter-machine communication remain open challenges. The review distils five research priorities, including adaptive perception and artificial intelligence (AI), digital-twin integration with building information modeling (BIM), cooperative multi-robot planning, rigorous safety assurance, and human–automation partnership that must be addressed to transform isolated prototypes into connected, self-optimizing fleets capable of delivering safer, faster, and more sustainable urban construction. As a core component of automated logistics systems, delivery robots hold significant application value in the field of unmanned delivery. This research addresses the robot path planning problem, aiming to enhance delivery efficiency and reduce operational costs through systematic improvements to the RIME optimization algorithm. Through in-depth analysis, we identified several major drawbacks in the standard RIME algorithm for path planning: insufficient global exploration capability in the initial stages, a lack of diversity in the hard RIME search mechanism, and oscillatory phenomena in soft RIME step size adjustment. These issues often lead to undesirable phenomena in path planning, such as local optima traps, path redundancy, or unsmooth trajectories. To address these limitations, this study proposes the Multi-Strategy Controlled Rime Algorithm (MSRIME), whose innovation primarily manifests in three aspects: first, it constructs a multi-strategy collaborative optimization framework, utilizing an infinite folding Fuch chaotic map for intelligent population initialization to significantly enhance the diversity of solutions; second, it designs a cooperative mechanism between a controlled elite strategy and an adaptive search strategy that, through a dynamic control factor, autonomously adjusts the strategy activation probability and adaptation rate, expanding the search space while ensuring algorithmic convergence efficiency; and finally, it introduces a cosine annealing strategy to improve the step size adjustment mechanism, reducing parameter sensitivity and effectively preventing path distortions caused by abrupt step size changes. During the algorithm validation phase, comparative tests were conducted between two groups of algorithms, demonstrating their significant advantages in optimization capability, convergence speed, and stability. Further experimental analysis confirmed that the algorithm’s multi-strategy framework effectively suppresses the impact of coordinate and dimensional differences on path quality during iteration, making it more suitable for delivery robot path planning scenarios. Ultimately, path planning experimental results across various Building Coverage Rate (BCR) maps and diverse application scenarios show that MSRIME exhibits superior performance in key indicators such as path length, running time, and smoothness, providing novel technical insights and practical solutions for the interdisciplinary research between intelligent logistics and computer science. To overcome the limitations in the perception performance of individual robots and homogeneous robot teams, this paper presents a distributed multi-robot collaborative SLAM method based on air–ground cross-domain cooperation. By integrating environmental perception data from UAV and UGV teams across air and ground domains, this method enables more efficient, robust, and globally consistent autonomous positioning and mapping. First, to address the challenge of significant differences in the field of view between UAVs and UGVs, which complicates achieving a unified environmental understanding, this paper proposes an iterative registration method based on semantic and geometric features assistance. This method calculates the correspondence probability of the air–ground loop closure keyframes using these features and iteratively computes the rotation angle and translation vector to determine the coordinate transformation matrix. The resulting matrix provides strong initialization for back-end optimization, which helps to significantly reduce global pose estimation errors. Next, to overcome the convergence difficulties and high computational complexity of large-scale distributed back-end nonlinear pose graph optimization, this paper introduces a multi-level partitioning majorization–minimization DPGO method incorporating loss kernel optimization. This method constructs a multi-level, balanced pose subgraph based on the coupling degree of robot nodes. Then, it uses the minimization substitution function of non-trivial loss kernel optimization to gradually converge the distributed pose graph optimization problem to a first-order critical point, thereby significantly improving global pose estimation accuracy. Finally, experimental results on benchmark SLAM datasets and the GRACO dataset demonstrate that the proposed method effectively integrates environmental feature information from air–ground cross-domain UAV and UGV teams, achieving high-precision global pose estimation and map construction.
