Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype characterized by poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. Chemotherapy regimens are associated with significant adverse effects negatively impacting patients’ quality of life (QoL). This systematic review aims to evaluate and compare QoL outcomes of patients with TNBC receiving novel therapies—including immunotherapy, antibody–drug conjugates, and targeted therapies—versus standard chemotherapy. Methods: We systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published within the past 15 years, identified through comprehensive searches in PubMed, Google Scholar, Research4Life, and Elicit. Included studies involved FDA-approved novel therapies (pembrolizumab, atezolizumab, sacituzumab-govitecan, olaparib, and talazoparib) administered to TNBC patients, and assessed QoL using validated tools such as EORTC QLQ-C30. Observational studies, case reports, and non-standardized assessments were excluded. Results: Eight RCTs comprising 3929 patients met the inclusion criteria. Sacituzumab govitecan and PARP inhibitors (olaparib and talazoparib) significantly improved QoL, notably delaying deterioration across physical, emotional, and functional domains compared to standard chemotherapy. Conversely, immunotherapies (pembrolizumab, atezolizumab) showed non-significant trends toward QoL improvement, with effects varying by patient subgroup and disease stage. Interpretation was limited by study design differences, inconsistent compliance, and incomplete data reporting. Conclusions: Immunotherapy showed a neutral effect on quality of life, providing neither significant improvement nor additional decline. Olaparib was associated with a delayed deterioration in quality of life, showing a more favorable tolerability profile compared to chemotherapy. Talazoparib leads to clinically meaningful enhancements in quality of life, while sacituzumab govitecan effectively improves patient-reported outcomes relative to standard chemotherapy. Full article

Background: Evidence on acute endocrine responses to K-1 kickboxing is limited. This pilot study assessed pre-to-post changes in GH, IGF-1 and insulin after a single K-1 bout and explored relationships with training experience (TE), final heart rate (HRFINAL) and perceived exertion (RPE). Methods: Elite male K-1 athletes (n = 10) completed an interclub, referee-supervised three-round bout (3 × 2 min). Venous blood was sampled pre-fight and +2 min. GH, IGF-1 and insulin were assayed (ELISA). Paired t-tests and Pearson’s r quantified changes and associations. Results: GH rose from 1.20 ± 2.05 to 11.27 ± 8.82 ng/mL (p = 0.007; d = 1.85), and insulin from 5.95 ± 1.56 to 12.95 ± 5.95 µU/mL (p = 0.002; d = 1.86); IGF-1 showed no change (200.90 ± 55.89 to 203.00 ± 54.10 ng/mL; p = 0.497). ΔGH and Δinsulin correlated positively with HRFINAL (rp = 0.89 and 0.88, both p < 0.001) and RPE (rp = 0.70 and 0.68; p = 0.024 and 0.031), and negatively with TE (rp = −0.72 and −0.68; p = 0.019 and 0.031). Conclusions: A single K-1 fight elicited large acute increases in GH and insulin but not IGF-1 at +2 min. HRFINAL and RPE tracked response magnitude, while more experienced athletes showed smaller deltas. Findings are preliminary and limited by a small sample, elite-only cohort, in an interclub setting, with immediate sampling and absence of a control group. Full article

Background/Objectives: Disinfection of removable prostheses is essential for controlling oral infections, yet the methods employed may compromise the mechanical reliability of denture base materials. This study evaluated the effect of microwave irradiation and immersion in 0.2% chlorhexidine solution on the fracture strength of three commonly used acrylic denture bases. Methods: Forty-five standardised maxillary palatal denture bases were fabricated from cross-linked conventional, high-impact, and light-cured acrylic resins. The specimens were divided equally into three treatment groups: water storage (control), immersion in 0.2% chlorhexidine solution for 30 min twice weekly, and microwave disinfection at 650 W for three minutes, each continued for four weeks. Fracture strength was determined by using the Universal testing machine. The data were analysed with one-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post hoc testing. Results: Cross-linked and high-impact acrylic resins exhibited significantly greater fracture strength than light-cured acrylics (p < 0.001). The overall ANOVA showed no statistically significant differences among disinfection methods (p = 0.069); however, post hoc comparisons revealed significant reductions in fracture strength within specific material groups following microwave disinfection. This effect was most pronounced in the light-cured group, whereas immersion in chlorhexidine produced no significant changes. Notably, the fracture strength of all groups remained above clinically acceptable thresholds. Conclusions: Microwave disinfection negatively influences the mechanical integrity of acrylic denture bases, particularly those fabricated from light-cured resins. In contrast, immersion in 0.2% chlorhexidine preserves fracture strength, supporting its use as a safe and effective protocol for routine disinfection in dental practice. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study systematically investigated the expression characteristics of the ALDOA gene in skeletal muscle cells and its effects on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. Methods: We constructed an ALDOA overexpression vector and transfected it into C2C12 cells and porcine skeletal muscle satellite cells. Results: We found that ALDOA exhibited the highest expression in the longissimus dorsi muscle and was primarily localized in the cell nucleus. Overexpression of ALDOA significantly inhibited cell proliferation, induced G0/G1 phase arrest, and downregulated the expression of proliferation-related genes such as CDK2 and Cyclin D1. Concurrently, ALDOA overexpression markedly promoted apoptosis. Regarding differentiation, although ALDOA expression was upregulated during differentiation, its overexpression significantly suppressed the expression of myogenic differentiation-related genes (such as MYOD, MYOG, MEF2C), suggesting a negative regulatory role in differentiation control. Conclusions: This study reveals the multifaceted regulatory functions of ALDOA in skeletal muscle cells, providing experimental evidence for deepening the understanding of its mechanisms in muscle development and regeneration. This study provides the first functional evidence that ALDOA acts as a multifunctional regulator in skeletal muscle cells, negatively governing cell growth and fate decisions by inhibiting proliferation, promoting apoptosis, and impeding myogenic differentiation, thereby extending its role beyond glycolysis to direct governance of cellular processes. This study reveals for the first time that ALDOA possesses dual functions in muscle cells, regulating both metabolism and transcription. Full article

(1) Background: Working from home is becoming increasingly common and has many advantages, but also negative consequences such as reduced physical activity, poor ergonomics and stress. Many people find it difficult to attend in-person rehabilitation sessions due to transportation barriers and limited access to rehabilitation facilities. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate whether our online preventive exercise programme effectively improves the musculoskeletal and mental health of sedentary workers. (2) Methods: The study participants worked from home on a long-term basis. Our research group consisted of 30 people, 16 in the intervention group and 14 in the control group. The intervention group members participated in a complex preventive exercise programme three times a week for 10 weeks. The training took place online. Before and after the exercise programme, various tests were used to assess the functional status of the participants’ spine, the strength and flexibility of their core muscles (Core, Kempf and Kraus–Weber tests) and their mental state (Beck Depression Inventory). (3) Results: Significant improvement was observed in the intervention group in the Core, Kempf, Kraus–Weber and Beck tests. (4) Conclusions: Our online complex training programme proved to be effective during the evaluation. It is crucial to tailor remote rehabilitation services to the individual needs and preferences of patients and healthcare professionals. Full article

Background: Diabetes-related foot diseases represent a global health problem because of the associated complications, the risk of amputation, and the economic burden on health systems. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a technique that uses sub-atmospheric pressure to help promote wound healing by reducing the inflammatory exudate while keeping the wound moist, inhibiting bacterial growth, and promoting the formation of granulation tissue. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of NPWT in preventing major amputation in diabetic patients with complicated foot or lower limb infections and to contextualize the results through a review of the existing literature. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study at the First Surgical Department of “Dr. I. Cantacuzino” Clinical Hospital in Bucharest, Romania, over a 15-year period, including 30 consecutive adult patients with diabetes and soft tissue foot or lower limb infections treated with NPWT. Patients with non-diabetic ulcers, incomplete medical data, or aged under 18 were excluded. All patients underwent initial surgical debridement, minor amputation, or drainage procedures, followed by the application of NPWT using a standard protocol. Dressings were changed every 2–4 days for a total of 7–10 days. Antibiotic therapy was adapted according to the culture results. The primary outcome was limb preservation, defined as avoidance of major amputation. Secondary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and wound status at discharge. Results: NPWT was associated with a favorable outcome in 24 patients (80%), defined by wound granulation or healing without the need for major amputation. Five patients (16.6%) underwent major amputation because of failure of the primary lesion treatment, and one patient died. No statistically significant association was observed between the outcomes and standard classification scores (WIFI, IWGDF, and TPI). A comprehensive literature review helped to integrate these findings into the existing pool of knowledge. Conclusions: NPWT may support limb preservation in selected diabetic foot cases. While the retrospective design and the small sample size of the study limit generalizability, these results reinforce the need for further controlled studies to evaluate NPWT in real-life clinical settings. The correct use of NPWT combined with etiological treatment may offer a maximum chance to avoid major amputation in patients with diabetes-related foot diseases. Full article

To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the formation of the bacterial community predominantly composed of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in sour bamboo shoots, the dynamics of the bacterial community structure and the influence of organic acids on the growth of dominant species were investigated. The results showed that the dominant bacteria in sour bamboo shoots changed from Enterobacteriaceae at first to LAB after fermentation. Correlation analysis revealed that organic acids, especially lactic acid and acetic acid, had great effects on bacteria. Even low concentrations of organic acids had negative effects on the growth of Enterobacter asburiae, while LAB exhibited remarkable tolerance to 8 g/L of organic acids. Notably, Levilactobacillus spicheri displayed a normal growth rate during incubation in medium containing 4 g/L of malic acid for 48 h. This study clarified the regulation of organic acids on bacterial community formation and provided a new understanding for bacterial control in traditional fermented foods. Full article

Background/Objectives: Precautionary health behaviours (PHBs), such as hand-washing or self-isolation, are non-pharmaceutical interventions used to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission. We investigated the potential confounding by PHBs of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates in a subset of study participants enrolled in id.DRIVE. Methods: The id.DRIVE COVID-19 VE study (formerly COVIDRIVE) is a European multicentre test-negative case–control study estimating COVID-19 VE against hospitalisation due to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 in patients with severe acute respiratory infection. All adults (≥18 y) prospectively enrolled between 16 November 2021 and 16 August 2023 at three sites were invited to complete a PHB survey capturing indicators of PHBs in the 3 months preceding admission. Fisher’s exact test with Bonferroni-adjusted threshold was used to measure the level of association between PHB indicators and both COVID-19 vaccine status and SARS-CoV-2 test result. VE estimates were generated with and without adjustment for PHBs. Results: PHBs were modified over time, with higher precautionary attitudes in the first COVID-19 vaccine booster season (2021–2022) compared to the second one (2022–2023). For the first booster season, PHBs were positively associated with exposures (vaccination status) and outcomes (case or control status). Adjusting for PHBs led to a 6 to 9 percentage-point increase in VE estimates. Conversely, no confounding by PHBs was observed in the second booster season. Conclusions: PHBs should be considered a possible confounder of COVID-19 VE studies. Further research is needed to define when PHBs should be integrated into VE models, as the level of confounding may differ according to the study population and the epidemiological context. Objectives: This study examines the relationship between maxillary morphology and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults, with a focus on intermolar distance (IMD) and palatal height (PH) as predictive factors. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted at private orthodontic practices in Sydney, Australia. A total of 100 adults (50 OSA patients and 50 controls) were included. OSA diagnosis and severity were confirmed via hospital-based polysomnography. Digital maxillary models were analyzed using the Medit Link software (version 3.2.0; Medit Corp., Seoul, Republic of Korea), and IMD and PH were measured. Statistical analyses included one-way ANOVA and linear regression modeling, with adjustments for age and sex. Results: The OSA group exhibited significantly narrower IMD (28.96–35.01 mm) and higher PH (21.68–29.56 mm) compared to the control group (IMD: 36.35–41.50 mm; PH: 18.57–23.51 mm). A negative correlation was observed between IMD and PH across all groups. Linear regression analysis demonstrated a strong association between these craniofacial parameters and OSA severity (R2 = 0.76, p < 0.001). IMD was negatively correlated with the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) (p = 0.003), while PH was positively correlated (p < 0.001). The inclusion of demographic variables did not significantly enhance the predictive model. Conclusions: Maxillary morphology associates with OSA severity, with narrower IMD and greater PH linked to higher AHI. Full article

The production of apples plays a crucial role in global agriculture. In 2023, the world production of these fruits amounted to nearly 150 million tonnes, cultivated on 6.6 million ha. Today’s horticulture faces the difficult challenge of maintaining high productivity while simultaneously reducing negative environmental impact. Traditional methods based on chemical pesticides encounter increasing problems, such as biodiversity loss, toxic residues in food, development of pest resistance, and disrupted balance of ecosystems. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) responds to these challenges by combining biological and agrotechnical methods with selective use of chemicals. Biopesticides are a crucial component of IPM, and they include antagonist microorganisms, substances of natural origin, and other biological methods of control, which represent effective alternatives to conventional measures. Their development is driven by consumer requirements concerning food safety, as well as by the need to protect the environment. The aim of this article is to highlight current problems in apple production, describe microorganisms and natural substances used as biopesticides used for the protection of apple orchards, as well as present the characteristics of modern technologies used for biocontrol in apple orchards. The analysis was carried out on the basis of publicly available statistical data, local government reports, and information contained in national and European strategic documents. During the analysis, numerous irregularities and differences in the quality and energy efficiency of the lighting infrastructure were indicated. It was found that outdated sodium luminaires with high energy consumption, low durability, and limited luminous efficacy are used in many cases, which generates significant operating costs and negatively affects the environment. The authors emphasize that a lack of regular and professional lighting audits leads to the suboptimal use of energy resources, an insufficient level of road safety, and failure to adapt lighting to current technical standards and the needs of road users. A lighting audit is a key tool for diagnosing the technical condition, efficiency, and compliance of installations with relevant regulations and recommendations. It also allows for the identification of potential savings and determining the directions of modernization and implementation of energy-saving technologies, such as LED luminaires and intelligent control systems.The presented analysis demonstrates that energy audits are an effective tool for confirming efficiency improvements and enhancing visual safety conditions through better compliance with photometric standards (luminance, lighting uniformity). Background/Objectives: The rapid rollout of 5G has renewed interest in potential reproductive effects of mid-band (3.5 GHz) and millimeter-wave (24 GHz) radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). We examined frequency- and duration-dependent changes in testicular cytokines, apoptosis-related genes, and sperm quality in rats. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 6 per group) were exposed for 60 days to 3.5 GHz or 24 GHz RF-EMF for 1 h/day or 7 h/day. The sham controls were housed identically. Testicular expressions of IL-10, IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α were quantified; Tp53, Bax, Bcl2, and Casp3 mRNA expressions were measured; and sperm concentration, viability, and motility were evaluated. Results: IL-10 was significantly reduced in the 24 GHz group at both 1-h and 7-h exposure duration. At 7 h, TNF-α was also lower at 24 GHz. Casp3 expression was higher and Tp53 was lower at 3.5 GHz at 1-h exposure duration. Sperm concentration and viability were reduced after 24 GHz exposure at 7 h, while sperm motility was reduced after 3.5 GHz exposure at both durations. Conclusions: Exposure to RF-EMF 3.5 GHz primarily impacts sperm motility via extrinsic pro-apoptotic pathways, while exposure to 24 GHz impacts sperm concentration and viability potentially through immune–apoptotic mechanisms, with all negative effects amplified by 7-h daily exposure. As aviation operations extend into complex natural environments, dust particles present significant challenges to flight stability and safety, particularly in dust-prone regions like southern Xinjiang. This study employs high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, combined with the SST turbulence model and the Lagrangian discrete phase model, to analyze the aerodynamic response of the NACA 0012 airfoil at varying wind speeds (5, 15, and 30 m/s) and angles of attack (3°, 8°, and 12°). The results indicate that, at low speeds and moderate to high angles of attack, dust particles reduce lift by over 70%, primarily due to boundary layer instability, weakened suction-side pressure, and premature flow separation. Higher wind speeds slightly delay flow separation, but cannot counteract the disturbances caused by the particles. At higher angles of attack, drag increases by more than 60%, driven by wake expansion, shear dissipation, and delayed pressure recovery. Pitching moment frequently reverses from negative to positive, reflecting a forward shift in the aerodynamic center and a loss of pitching stability. An increase in dust concentration amplifies these effects, leading to earlier moment reversal and more abrupt stall behavior. These findings underscore the urgent need to improve aircraft design, control, and safety strategies for operations in dusty environments. Full article

Nitrogen metabolism in the human body is in a strictly balanced state, which is disturbed in pathologies, including breast cancer. The state of nitrogen balance can be judged by the content of urea and the amount of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) (Val, Leu, and Ile), glutamine (Gln), and glutamate (Glu). The study involved 1438 people, including patients with breast cancer (n = 543), fibroadenomas (n = 597), and healthy controls (n = 298). Saliva samples were collected from all patients before treatment, and urea levels were determined in all 1438 samples. Salivary levels of BCAAs, Gln, and Glu were determined in 116 patients with breast cancer, 24 with fibroadenomas, and 25 healthy volunteers. An increase in the concentration of urea in saliva was shown in breast cancer, most pronounced in luminal molecular biological subtypes: luminal A 10.46 [7.69; 12.62] mmol/L (p < 0.0001), luminal B HER2-negative 9.52 [6.72; 12.52] mmol/L (p = 0.0198), and luminal B HER2-positive 8.26 [5.27; 12.07] mmol/L. The Gln/Glu ratio increased in the saliva of the control group (5.43 [3.30; 10.5]) compared with breast cancer (2.22 [0.84; 5.40], p = 0.0094) and fibroadenomas (1.94 [0.89; 6.05], p = 0.0184). For luminal B HER2-positive and TNBC, the Gln/Glu ratio increased sharply to 8.23 [3.24; 10.9] (p = 0.0327) and 11.2 [4.28; 15.2] (p < 0.0001) compared with healthy controls. Thus, an increased Gln/Glu ratio in saliva may characterize a more aggressive subtype of breast cancer. Full article

Effects of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) Irrigation on Rice Growth and Soil Available Nutrients on Black Soil in Northeast China

Extensive practice has demonstrated that the continuous pursuit of high yields in the black soil region of Northeast China resulted in imbalances in soil nutrients and declines in both soil quality and water use efficiency. Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation offers a promising solution for increasing rice yield and maintaining soil fertility. However, the success of this irrigation method largely depends on its scheduling. This study examined the threshold effects of AWD on rice growth, yield, and soil nutrient availability in the Sanjiang Plain, a representative black soil region in Northeast China. A two-year trial was conducted from 2023 to 2024 at the Qixing National Agricultural Science and Technology Park. “Longjing 31”, a local cultivar, was selected as the experimental material. The lower limit of soil water content under AWD was set as the experimental factor, with three levels: −10 kPa (LA), −20 kPa (MA), and −30 kPa (SA). The local traditional irrigation practice, continuous flooding, served as the control treatment (CK). Indicators of rice growth and soil nutrient content were measured and analyzed at five growth stages: tillering, jointing, heading, milk ripening, and yellow ripening. The results showed that, compared to CK, AWD had minimal impact on rice plant height and tiller number, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). However, AWD affected leaf area index (LAI), shoot dry matter (SDM), yield, and soil nutrient availability. In 2023, control had little effect on rice plant height and tiller number among the different irrigation treatments. The LAI of LA was 11.1% and 22.5% higher than that of MA and SA, respectively, while SDM in LA was 10.5% and 17.2% higher than in MA and SA. Significant differences were found between LA and MA, as well as between LA and SA, whereas no significant differences were observed between MA and SA. The light treatment is beneficial to the growth and development of rice, while the harsh growth environment caused by the moderate and severe treatments is unfavorable to rice growth. The average contents of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) in LA were 11.4%, 8.4%, and 9.3% higher than in MA, and 16.7%, 11.5%, and 15.0% higher than in SA, respectively. Significant differences were observed between LA and SA. This is because the light treatment facilitates the release of available nutrients in the soil, while the moderate and severe treatments hinder this process. Although panicle number per unit area and grain number per panicle in LA were 7.5% and 2.3% higher than in MA, and 10.8% and 2.2% higher than in SA, these differences were not statistically significant. Seed setting rate and thousand-grain weight showed little variation across irrigation treatments. The yield of LA was 10,233.3 kg hm−2, 9.1% and 14.1% higher than that of MA and SA, respectively, with significant differences observed. Compared with the moderate and severe treatments, the light treatment increases indicators such as the number of panicles per unit area, grains per panicle, thousand-grain weight, and seed setting rate, resulting in significant differences among the treatments. Water use efficiency (WUE) decreased as the control level increased. The WUE of all AWD irrigation treatments was significantly higher than that of the control treatment (CK). Compared with CK, AWD reduces evaporation, percolation, and other water losses, leading to a significant decrease in water consumption. Meanwhile, the yield remains basically unchanged or even slightly increases, thus resulting in a higher WUE than CK. The trends in rice growth, soil nutrient indicators, and WUE in 2024 were generally consistent with those observed in 2023. In 2024, the yield of LA was 9832.7 kg hm−2, 14.9% and 17.3% higher than that of MA and SA, respectively, with significant differences observed. Based on the results, the following conclusions are drawn: (1) AWD irrigation can affect the growth of rice, alter the status of available nutrients in the soil, and thereby cause changes in yield and WUE; (2) LA is the optimal treatment for increasing rice yield, improving the availability of soil available nutrients, and improving WUE; (3) Both MA and SA enhanced WUE; however, these practices negatively impacted rice growth and the concentration of soil available nutrients, leading to a concurrent decline in yield. To increase rice yield and maintain soil fertility, LA, with an irrigation upper limit of 30 mm and a soil water potential threshold of −10 kPa, is recommended for the Sanjiang Plain region.
