The sustainable transformation of areas associated with mining is an essential contemporary challenge. In the course of such transformations, economic benefits are confronted with community criticism of heavy industry. In this context, the study examines spatial solutions implemented in the revitalisation of areas adjacent to active industrial sites. The article aims to characterise solutions applied in locations that elude a straightforward division into industrial and post-industrial. The motivations of the entities involved in the construction and the effects of implementing such projects are investigated. To achieve this aim, compositional and visual linkages in four locations (in Germany and Poland) were analysed, along with the intentions of designers and investors and the opinions of users. The study revealed the influence of political decisions on spatial solutions, an aspect not previously analysed, which has led to a limited understanding of the role they play in the transformation. It was indicated that drawing users’ attention to the aesthetic values of active industrial areas coincides with diverting attention from their nuisances. The discreet cooperation between local authorities, designers, and industry (as expressed in architectural solutions) was emphasised. The research opens a field for discussion on managing community perceptions through spatial solutions. Full article

In recent years, advancements in generative artificial intelligence have led to the development of sophisticated tools capable of mimicking diverse artistic styles, opening new possibilities for digital creativity and artistic expression. This paper presents a critical assessment of the style replication capabilities of contemporary generative models, evaluating their strengths and limitations across multiple dimensions. We examine how effectively these models reproduce traditional artistic styles while maintaining structural integrity and compositional balance in the generated images. The analysis is based on a new large dataset of AI-generated works imitating artistic styles of the past, holding potential for a wide range of applications: the “AI-Pastiche” dataset. This study is supported by extensive user surveys, collecting diverse opinions on the dataset and investigating both technical and aesthetic challenges, including the ability to generate outputs that are realistic and visually convincing, the versatility of models in handling a wide range of artistic styles, and the extent to which they adhere to the content and stylistic specifications outlined in prompts, preserving cohesion and integrity in generated images. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of generative tools in style replication, offering insights into their technical and artistic limitations, potential advancements in model design and training methodologies, and emerging opportunities for enhancing digital artistry, human–AI collaboration, and the broader creative landscape. This essay focuses on the Greek adoptees’ search for identity and on the agrafa, or the “unwritten” territories, into which this search penetrates. The Greek adoptees represent an underresearched case study of the postwar intercountry adoption movement (1950–1975). Creating a narrative of the self is key to the adoptees’ identity formation, but their personal narrative is often undermined by stereotypes and denunciations that stunt its development. The research presented here has been guided by questions that interrogate the verdict-making or “sentencing” associated with the adoptees’ identity-shaping process: their sentencing to subjugation by stock opinions, the denouncing of their alternative viewpoints about “rescue” adoptions, and the verdict of their entrapment in feel-good master narratives. This essay also explores broader research questions pertaining to modes of interrogating “historic” adoptions from Greece. It is concerned with the why rather than with the how or the who of the oldest, post-WWII intercountry adoption flows. In what forums and genres (narrative, visual, journalistic, scholarly) are Greek adoption facts and legacies articulated, mediated, and/or materialized? How do memories, both positive and negative, underpin current projects of self-identification and transformation? What are the adoptees’ preferred outlets to speak about embodied experiences, and are those satisfactory? Based on a mixed methods approach, the essay ties these steps in identity growth to the Adoptee Consciousness Model, illustrating the five phases of consciousness that the adoptees may experience throughout their lives. This opinion article aims to highlight the potential mechanisms behind a specific stage of Yoga Nidra (YN) practice, i.e., the formulation and repetition of Sankalpa, encouraging scholars to further study it and providing athletes with suggestions on how to use it for their sport and health. YN can be defined as a meditation practice encompassing a sequence of breathing, guided body awareness, visualization and cognitive restructuring process exercises. According to preliminary results, YN stimulates a hypnagogic state generally associated with improvements in sleep parameters, thus enhancing recovery and health in different populations including athletes. Cognitive restructuring processes can be stimulated by the formulation of Sankalpa, a YN element comparable to positive self-instructions used to counteract dysfunctional cognitions. From a practical standpoint, the formulation of Sankalpa involves expressing an intention that could positively influence body, mind and emotions. For example, Sankalpa might stop or reverse unhealthy thought patterns, resulting in greater mental health. It might also foster intrinsic motivation and enhance emotional intelligence by strengthening mental resilience. In particular, athletes could use Sankalpa as an affirmation to awaken any strength they may feel is necessary to provide them with stress–recovery balance and mental health. However, additional research on this topic is needed to better elucidate Sankalpa’s mechanisms/effects and better integrate its formulation into sport programs. Full article

The implementation of Vertical Greening Systems (VGS), like green façades, on historic building facades is approached with caution due to concerns regarding material compatibility, visual impact, and potential compromises to cultural significance. However, VGS can offer significant contributions to urban sustainability when integrated with knowledge and care of historic buildings by reducing the urban heat island effect, improving air quality, fostering a green economy, and creating greener environments. These tensions highlight a critical research gap: how can VGS contribute to urban sustainability while respecting the values of historic building façades? This study addresses this gap by exploring professional interest groups’ opinions on implementing VGS on historic buildings, focusing on the perceived benefits and concerns from environmental, social, economic, cultural, legal, and technical aspects. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining the findings from the literature review with a survey targeting individuals involved in VGS implementations or heritage conservation. The survey included both open- and closed-ended questions. Of the 165 individuals contacted, 83 valid responses were analyzed. Results from the open-ended questions showed that 89% of respondents recognized the environmental benefits of VGS, while 85% raised technical issues, particularly regarding material compatibility. An important insight emerged from comparing open-ended and closed-ended responses: respondents were more likely to acknowledge the benefits of VGS when prompted. This indicates that raising awareness about the use of VGS on historic buildings is essential. The findings offer practical implications for early-stage planning, stakeholder engagement, and the design of heritage conservation policy. They illustrate a need for an informed decision-making process for the integration of VGS onto historic building facades, aligning with conservation ethics and urban sustainability. Preface: This study aims to create a discussion on the potential synergies between vertical greening and historic buildings, with the intention of guiding future conservation strategies to enhance urban sustainability. We do not advocate for vertical greenery as a universal solution, but rather seek to explore under which conditions vertical greening may be compatible with conservation practice. For the purposes of this study, “historic buildings” refer to structures that possess cultural, architectural, or historical significance, whether they are formally protected or informally valued by their communities. We acknowledge that the term may vary in meaning across different national and cultural contexts. Moreover, our analysis focuses on cases where both the vertical greening and historic façades are presumed to be in structurally sound and well-maintained condition. Full article

Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of injury and death among adolescents, making road safety education crucial. This study assesses the performance of and users’ opinions on the Route 2 School (R2S) traffic safety education program, designed for secondary school students (13–17 years) in Belgium. The program incorporates gamified e-learning modules containing, among others, podcasts, interactive 360° visuals, and virtual reality (VR), to enhance traffic knowledge, situation awareness, risk detection, and risk management. This study was conducted across several cities and municipalities within Belgium. More than 600 students from school years 3 to 6 completed the platform and of these more than 200 students filled in a comprehensive questionnaire providing detailed feedback on platform usability, preferences, and behavioral risk assessments. The results revealed shortcomings in traffic knowledge and skills, particularly among older students. Gender-based analysis indicated no significant performance differences overall, though females performed better in risk management and males in risk detection. Furthermore, students from cities outperformed those from municipalities. Feedback on the R2S platform indicated high usability and engagement, with VR-based simulations receiving the most positive reception. In addition, it was highlighted that secondary school students are high-risk groups for distraction and red-light violations as cyclists and pedestrians. This study demonstrates the importance of gamified, technology-enhanced road safety education while underscoring the need for module-specific improvements and regional customization. The findings support the broader application of e-learning methodologies for sustainable, behavior-oriented traffic safety education targeting adolescents. Full article

Data visualization is a key activity in data-driven decision making and is gaining momentum in many organizational contexts. However, the role and contribution of both end-user development (EUD) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for data visualization and analytics are still not clear or systematically studied. This work investigates how effectively AI-supported EUD tools may assist visual analytics tasks in organizations. An exploratory case study with eight interviews with key informants allowed a deep understanding of data analysis and visualization practices in a large Italian company. It aimed at identifying the various professional roles and competencies necessary in the business context, understanding the data sources and data formats exploited in daily activities, and formulating suitable hypotheses to guide the design of AI-supported EUD tools for data analysis and visualization. In particular, the results of interviews with key informants yielded the development of a prototype of an LLM-based EUD environment, which was then used with selected target users to collect their opinions and expectations about this type of intervention in their work practice and organization. All the data collected during the exploratory case study finally led to defining a set of design guidelines for AI-supported EUD for data visualization. Full article

In order to address the pressing challenge posed by the proliferation of fake news in the digital age, we emphasize its profound and harmful impact on societal structures, including the misguidance of public opinion, the erosion of social trust, and the exacerbation of social polarization. Current fake news detection methods are largely limited to superficial text analysis or basic text–image integration, which face significant limitations in accurately identifying deceptive information. To bridge this gap, we propose the UC-CMAF framework, which comprehensively integrates news text, images, and user comments through an adaptive co-attention fusion mechanism. The UC-CMAF workflow consists of four key subprocesses: multimodal feature extraction, cross-modal adaptive collaborative attention fusion of news text and images, cross-modal attention fusion of user comments with news text and images, and finally, input of fusion features into a fake news detector. Specifically, we introduce multi-head cross-modal attention heatmaps and comment importance visualizations to provide interpretability support for the model’s predictions, revealing key semantic areas and user perspectives that influence judgments. Through the cross-modal adaptive collaborative attention mechanism, UC-CMAF achieves deep semantic alignment between news text and images and uses social signals from user comments to build an enhanced credibility evaluation path, offering a new paradigm for interpretable fake information detection. Experimental results demonstrate that UC-CMAF consistently outperforms 15 baseline models across two benchmark datasets, achieving F1 Scores of 0.894 and 0.909. These results validate the effectiveness of its adaptive cross-modal attention mechanism and the incorporation of user comments in enhancing both detection accuracy and interpretability. Full article

Climate change presents serious challenges for infrastructure, regional planning, and public awareness. However, effectively understanding and analyzing large-scale climate discussions remains difficult. Traditional methods often struggle to extract meaningful insights from unstructured data sources, such as social media discourse, making it harder to track climate-related concerns and emerging trends. To address this gap, this study applies Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to analyze large volumes of climate-related data. By employing supervised and weak supervision methods, climate data are efficiently labeled to enable targeted analysis of regional- and infrastructure-specific climate impacts. Furthermore, BERT-based Named Entity Recognition (NER) is utilized to identify key climate-related terms, while sentiment analysis of platforms like Twitter provides valuable insights into trends in public opinion. AI-driven visualization tools, including predictive modeling and interactive mapping, are also integrated to enhance the accessibility and usability of the analyzed data. The research findings reveal significant patterns in climate-related discussions, supporting policymakers and planners in making more informed decisions. By combining AI-powered analytics with advanced visualization, the study enhances climate impact assessment and promotes the development of sustainable, resilient infrastructure. Overall, the results demonstrate the strong potential of AI-driven climate analysis to inform policy strategies and raise public awareness. Full article

The recent debate on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors has focused primarily on financial decision making and risk management from the perspectives of developed economies. However, in most developing countries, ESG risk models for mortgage lenders are very limited. In most of these countries, ESG-rating providers employ widely varying methodologies and disclosure policies, often resulting in divergent assessments of the same organization. This research develops a pilot statistical-analysis, dual-horizon ESG risk model specific to the Mexican mortgage industry, which provides a better understanding of how ESG risk could evolve over time across financial, operational, regulatory, and reputational dimensions in Mexico. This dual-horizon ESG framework considers a two-year short-term risk assessment and a ten-year long-term risk assessment. This research integrates expert opinions with a scoring system that improves on traditional methods. Dependability and internal consistency are tested using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach’s alpha. Radar chart visualization and cluster analysis are used to visualize the empirical results. The empirical findings show that environmental risk has strong temporal effects, and the perceived severity is 20% higher over the longer time horizon. Furthermore, social risk exhibits high variability, identifying it as a critical risk for financial stability and regulatory compliance. Cluster analysis identifies systematic patterns in expert opinions that determine two groups, making the qualitative findings derived from radar plots more robust. Group 0 (75% of experts) has an institutional view about ESG risks. Group 1 (25% of experts) aligns with an affiliation to large financial institutions. Finally, this research identifies three key sustainability challenges for the mortgage sector in Mexico: exposure to climate-induced stress, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and social inequality. E-polis is a serious digital game designed to gamify sociological surveys studying young people’s political opinions. In this platform game, players navigate a digital world, encountering quests posing sociological questions. Players’ answers shape the city-game world, altering building structures based on their choices. E-polis is a serious game, not a government simulation, aiming to understand players’ behaviors and opinions; thus, we do not train the players but rather understand them and help them visualize their choices in shaping a city’s future. Also, it is noticed that no correct or incorrect answers apply. Moreover, our game utilizes a novel middleware architecture for development, diverging from typical asset-prefab-scene and script segregation. This article presents the data layer of our game’s middleware, specifically focusing on data analysis based on respondents’ gameplay answers. E-polis represents an innovative approach to gamifying sociological research, providing a unique platform for gathering and analyzing data on political opinions among youth and contributing to the broader field of serious games. (1) Background: Coproparasitological techniques are fundamental in veterinary medicine for diagnosing intestinal parasitic infections and form a core part of clinical training. Due to their procedural nature, teaching these techniques can benefit from scalable, visual tools that support skill acquisition and self-directed learning. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of instructional videos on students’ understanding and perceptions of coproparasitological methods. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 110 veterinary students who viewed instructional videos covering 11 coproparasitological techniques. Their knowledge was assessed using a 17-item multiple-choice exam. Additionally, a structured opinion questionnaire was used to gather student feedback on the clarity and usefulness of the videos. (3) Results: Fourteen of the seventeen exam items were answered correctly by more than 80% of participants, with one item reaching 96.4% accuracy. Regarding perceptions, 94% of students rated the videos as “very clear”, and 94% as “very useful”, highlighting strong acceptance and satisfaction. (4) Conclusions: Instructional videos significantly supported students’ comprehension and were perceived as effective learning tools. Their integration into veterinary parasitology curricula is recommended to reinforce technical training, improve learning outcomes, and address limitations in access to hands-on instruction, especially in resource-constrained educational settings. Overall, instructional videos represent a valuable strategy to strengthen practical competencies in veterinary parasitology education. Full article

Transitioning to sustainable systems often faces significant challenges. People from different backgrounds often have different views on sustainability, which may lead to group polarisation. To promote collective participation in the transition to sustainability, it is critical to understand the drivers of polarisation and promote inclusiveness in decision-making. We developed a Dialogue Tool based on the HUMAT framework to explore opinion dynamics such as polarisation in the community and find potential pathways to reconcile when division occurs. By simulating dissatisfaction, division, and reconciliation in the community, we studied how individual characteristics (such as openness to change and assertiveness) affect collective decisions. Furthermore, the Dialogue Tool can be used to test possible interventions to reduce polarisation and increase community satisfaction. Visual representations of community dynamics under different scenarios within the Dialogue Tool have the potential to foster meaningful dialogues among stakeholders, which may promote a deeper reflection on community collaboration. While limitations such as simplifications and lack of empirical calibration limit the predictive accuracy of the Dialogue Tool (although this is not its goal), it still shows strong potential for educational and policy applications. It offers insights into social influences, conformity, and polarisation in community settings, making it a promising tool for fostering inclusive, informed decision-making and strengthening community participation in sustainable development transitions. Measuring and comparing religious freedom across countries and over time requires reliable and valid data sources. Existing religious freedom datasets are either based on the coding of qualitative data (such as the Religion and State Project or the Pew Research Center), on expert opinions (V-Dem or the World Watch List) or on surveys (Anti-Defamation League). Each of these approaches has its strengths and limitations. In this study, we present the Violent Incidents Database (VID), a complementary tool designed to collect, record, and analyze violent incidents related to violations of religious freedom based on media reports and other public sources. We critically describe the criteria and process for selecting, coding and verifying the incidents, as well as the categories and indicators used to classify them. We also compare the VID with other existing religious freedom datasets and show how the VID provides a complementary picture of the nature and dynamics of religious freedom violations. We offer a preliminary analysis of the data collected through the end of 2024 with selected figures for data visualization. We conclude by discussing anticipated improvements for the VID as well as its potential applications for policy makers, advocates, and practitioners. Full article

This paper analyzes and evaluates different types of interactions in educational software that uses three-dimensional (3D) interactions and visualization technologies, with a focus on accessibility in such environments. To determine the accessibility parameters based on 3D user interactions, a two-phase pilot study was conducted. In the first phase, the GeometryGame research instrument was tested, in which objective metrics were collected. In the second phase, subjective metrics were collected in the form of participants’ opinions on certain aspects of accessibility and interactions implemented in the GeometryGame. The most important interaction parameters were evaluated, including the size of the objects, the presence of distractions, the intuitiveness of the user interface, and the size and distance of the interaction elements from the virtual hand. The results provide insight into user preferences and highlight the importance of customizing the user interface to ensure effective and accessible 3D interactions. Based on objective measurements and subjective user feedback, recommendations were developed to improve the accessibility of educational software that supports 3D interactions; to increase usability, reliability, and user comfort; and to enhance future research in this area.
