Background: Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) includes a group of rare genetic disorders affecting the skin and mucous membranes. These disorders are characterized by extreme fragility and blister formation after minimal or no trauma. Oral and systemic manifestations vary by subtype; the more severe forms often present with extensive intra-oral blistering, scarring, microstomia, vestibular obliteration, ankyloglossia, and—in some cases—oral cancer. This study aims to collect data on oral-health practices and challenges in people with EB to inform preventive strategies and dental care. Methods: An international, structured online questionnaire with 31 items was distributed to individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of EB. The survey explored clinical and oral manifestations, home-care routines (oral hygiene and diet), experiences with dental professionals, and the impact of oral health on quality of life. Results: Eighty-two questionnaires were completed. Dystrophic EB was the most often reported subtype (69.5%). Most respondents (67.1%) experienced recurrent oral blisters and/or erosions. Many reported relying exclusively on soft foods and struggling with mechanical plaque removal because of microstomia and pseudo-syndactyly. Severe oral pain hindered effective brushing in 17% of participants. Hand contractures and microstomia interfered with oral hygiene in 74% and 31% of participants, respectively. Nearly 30% sought dental care only when in pain. Among those who did not attend regular check-ups or hygiene sessions (44.6%), the most cited reason was that dental clinics were inadequately equipped or trained to manage EB. Conclusions: Because dental procedures carry significant risks for patients with EB, preventive care should begin in early childhood. Yet many patients are still insufficiently informed about essential preventive measures and lack access to dental professionals trained in EB management. Full article

The use of orthodontic aligners has increased significantly due to their convenience and esthetic advantages. However, understanding their microbiological behavior and cytotoxicity is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the metabolic activity (MA) and proliferation of different bacterial strains—assessed through colony-forming unit (CFU) counts—as well as the cytotoxicity of three widely used aligner systems: Spark, Invisalign, and Smile. Wettability and surface free energy (both dispersive and polar components) were determined using the sessile drop technique. The bacterial strains Streptococcus oralis, Actinomyces viscosus, Streptococcus gordonii, Enterococcus faecalis, and Porphyromonas gingivalis were cultured, and their behavior on the aligner surfaces was assessed under simulated oral cavity conditions in both aerobic and anaerobic environments using a bioreactor. Cytocompatibility was evaluated with HFF-1 human fibroblasts. Distinct strain-specific behaviors were observed. For Spark aligners, the contact angle was 70.5°, Invisalign 80.6°, and Smile 91.2°, and the surface free energy was 60.8, 66.7, and 74. 2 mJ/m2, respectively, highlighting the high polar component of the Spark aligner of 31.9 mJ/m2 compared to 19.3 and 20.2 mJ/m2 for Invisalign and Smile, respectively. The Spark aligner exhibited the lowest metabolic activity for Streptococcus oralis (23.1%), Actinomyces viscosus (43.2%), Porphyromonas gingivalis (17.7%), and biofilm formation (2.4%), likely due to its higher hydrophilicity. The Smile aligner showed the lowest metabolic activity for Streptococcus gordonii (23.6%) and Enterococcus faecalis (51.1%), attributed to its low polar surface free energy component. CFU counts were minimal for all aligners and bacterial strains, including biofilm. All aligners demonstrated cytocompatibility above 70% (Spark: 71.0%, Invisalign: 75.7%, and Smile: 75.6%). These findings highlight the importance of considering aligner material properties in clinical practice and underscore the need for proper oral hygiene and aligner maintenance. Full article

The infant oral microbiome is a complex and dynamic microbial community that undergoes various transformations during human development. From birth, these microorganisms are modulated by factors such as birth type, nutrition, oral hygiene, hormonal changes, and environmental and socioeconomic conditions. These elements interact continuously, shaping the diversity and stability of the oral microbiome and consequently influencing the oral and general health of individuals. The main objective of this study was to review the literature on the evolution of the oral microbiome at different stages of growth, with special emphasis on the maintenance of dental homeostasis and prevention of pathologies such as caries and periodontitis. A bibliographic review of scientific databases was conducted, focusing on the last decade. In general, oral microbiome dysbiosis increases the risk of oral diseases and systemic conditions. Diet, parental practices, and horizontal transmission of bacteria from caregivers have been shown to modulate and influence the composition and functioning of the infant oral microbiome. Despite these advances, gaps remain in our understanding of the impact of the pediatric oral microbiome on long-term comprehensive health. Therefore, longitudinal research is needed to understand the development of the oral microbiome and its potential role in early prediction, prevention, and treatment of oral and systemic diseases. Background/Objectives: Maintaining proper oral hygiene is particularly challenging for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, and anxiety. Traditional oral hygiene education methods may be ineffective for this population, thereby necessitating innovative solutions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)-based educational program in improving home oral hygiene practices among children and adolescents with ASD. Methods: Sixty-four children with ASD (Level 1) were recruited and divided into two groups. Group 1 received traditional oral hygiene education, while Group 2 used a VR-based intervention featuring a virtual domestic bathroom with an avatar demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques. The intervention lasted eight weeks, with two one-hour sessions per week. The oral health assessment tool (OHAT) was used to evaluate oral hygiene status before and after the intervention. An unpaired t-test compared outcomes between groups. Results: Both groups showed improvements in oral hygiene, but the VR intervention group exhibited a significantly greater reduction in OHAT scores compared to the traditional education group (p < 0.001) due to a greater improvement in oral health. The VR-based approach enhanced engagement and adherence to oral hygiene routines, particularly benefiting children with ASD who struggle with conventional methods. Conclusions: VR-based education appears to be a promising tool for improving oral hygiene habits in children with ASD by providing an interactive and immersive learning experience. Future research should explore long-term adherence and the broader application of VR in healthcare education. Full article

Objective: To evaluate the short-term clinical impact of daily use of calibrated interdental brushes (IDBs) on gingival bleeding among dental and dental hygiene students within academic curricula. Methods: A prospective cohort of 117 students from three Italian universities was followed over three months. All participants received personalized training and calibrated interdental brushes matched to their interdental spaces. The primary outcome was the percentage of interdental sites exhibiting bleeding on interdental brushing (BOIB), assessed at baseline (T0), one month (T1), and three months (T2). Adherence was self-reported. Statistical analyses included Wilcoxon tests, multivariate regression, and adjusted ANCOVA models. Results: Median bleeding scores decreased from 50.0% [IQR: 26.9–69.2] at baseline to 15.4% [IQR: 3.8–30.8] at one month and further to 11.5% [IQR: 0.0–26.9] at three months (p < 0.001). Regular interdental brush users showed a 15 to 16 percentage point greater reduction in bleeding compared to occasional users (p < 0.001). Dental hygiene students had significantly lower baseline bleeding scores than dental students, but both groups experienced comparable benefits from the intervention. Adjusted analyses confirmed a sustained beneficial effect of regular interdental brushing. Initial weak and transient correlations between behavioral factors and bleeding likely reflect multifactorial influences and variable adherence. Conclusions: Daily use of calibrated interdental brushes produces a rapid, significant, and sustained reduction in gingival bleeding among dental students. Systematic integration of this protocol within dental education programs is feasible and effective, promoting early adoption and maintenance of essential preventive oral health behaviors. Background: This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of laser therapies and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for the treatment of intraoral halitosis by synthesizing randomized controlled trials. Methods: A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases identified 14 eligible RCTs. Results: Laser-based interventions, including diode lasers and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers, and aPDT using photosensitizers such as methylene blue, toluidine blue, and Bixa orellana (annatto), effectively reduced volatile sulfur compound levels and associated bacterial populations compared to traditional methods like tongue scraping and antiseptic rinses. Combination treatments consistently demonstrated superior short-term efficacy, although treatment outcomes often declined after 7–14 days, indicating the necessity for repeated sessions or adjunctive oral hygiene measures. Conclusions: Methodological heterogeneity across studies regarding laser parameters, photosensitizer types, and outcome measurements highlighted the need for standardized protocols. Future research should focus on multicenter trials with extended follow-up and standardized microbiological evaluations to further validate these promising treatments and integrate them effectively into clinical practice. Objective: Dysphagia is common among elderly patients after hip fracture surgery and can lead to aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and delayed rehabilitation. This study aims to present current clinical practice patterns of assessment and intervention for dysphagia in this patient group. Methods: The study was conducted through a two-round online questionnaire targeting Danish occupational therapists with expertise in dysphagia post hip fracture. Results: A total of 71 therapists participated in round one, and 44 (62%) completed round two. Triggers for assessment included coughing, recurrent pneumonia, voice changes, altered eating habits, unplanned weight loss, functional decline, and comorbidities; age was rarely used. Frequently used assessment tools were Facio-Oral Tract Therapy (57.1%), the Minimal Eating Observation Form—Version II (40%) and the Volume–Viscosity Swallow Test (41.4%). Key interventions included texture modification, posture correction, patient education, oral hygiene optimization, compensatory strategies, and dysphagia training; oral screens and electrical stimulation were less common. Conclusions: This study provides a descriptive overview of current dysphagia assessment triggers, tools, and interventions used for elderly hip fracture patients in Denmark. The findings highlight clinical practice patterns that can inform future research on patient outcomes and the effectiveness of specific interventions in this population. Full article

Background: The increasing popularity of fruit juices as part of perceived healthy dietary choices has raised concerns regarding their erosive effects on dental enamel. While prior in vitro studies have largely relied on commercial fruit drinks and non-human enamel samples, this study adopts a more ecologically valid approach by using fresh local fruit juices and extracted human teeth to evaluate enamel erosion. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the consumption patterns, oral hygiene behaviours, and awareness of the erosive potential of fruit juices among Malaysian adults and to evaluate the erosive effects of freshly squeezed local fruit juices on human dental enamel under simulated oral conditions. Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey (n = 189) was conducted among dental clinic attendees to assess fruit juice intake habits, oral health practices, and awareness levels. In parallel, an in vitro study was performed using 40 extracted premolar teeth immersed in lime juice, pineapple juice, citric acid (positive control), or distilled water (negative control) over a 10-day period. Enamel volume loss, surface roughness, and microhardness were analysed pre- and post-immersion. Results: Fruit juice consumption was highly prevalent, with lime (57.7%) being the most commonly consumed, followed by watermelon (53.0%), star fruit (15.9%), and pineapple (15.4%). The majority of respondents preferred sweetened juices (75.7%) and demonstrated only moderate oral hygiene, with just 53.4% reporting brushing their teeth twice daily. Awareness of the dental effects of acidic beverages was limited. In vitro results confirmed that both lime and pineapple juices significantly reduced enamel microhardness and increased surface roughness (p < 0.0001), with lime juice causing the greatest enamel volume loss due to its higher acidity. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for public health strategies that raise awareness on the implications of dietary acids and promote protective oral health behaviours. Dental practitioners should incorporate dietary counselling in routine care, particularly for populations at higher risk. Full article

Grounded in health behavior theory, this study examined patterns of preventive health behavior in a culturally diverse, multilingual region of northern Italy using data from a representative population survey (n = 2090). Preventive behaviors were assessed using the 16-item Good Health Practices (GHP-16) scale. Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified five behavioral profiles, ranging from ‘Globally Low Engagers’ to ‘Comprehensive High Engagers’. Binary logistic regression compared ‘Globally Low Engagers’ to ‘Broadly Moderate Preventers’, examining predictors including gender, age, education, language, chronic disease status, health literacy (HLS-EU-Q16), patient activation (PAM-10), mistrust of health information, living situation, and healthcare employment. The results showed that men, younger adults, individuals with low patient activation, those living alone, and respondents with high mistrust of health information had higher odds of belonging to the low engagement group. Health literacy and language group membership were not significantly associated with the profile membership. Item-level comparisons revealed gender differences in information-seeking, oral hygiene, and dietary behaviors, with men reporting lower engagement. These findings support a segmentation-based understanding of preventive health behavior and highlight the need to address personal capacities and contextual barriers in interventions while challenging assumptions of uniformly higher female health vigilance. Objective: This cross-sectional content analysis aimed to investigate how oil pulling is portrayed on YouTube Shorts, focusing on the types of speakers, claims made, and alignment with scientific evidence. The study further explored how the content may influence viewer perception, health behaviors, and the potential spread of misinformation. Methods: On 28 January 2025, a systematic search of YouTube Shorts was performed using the term “oil pulling” in incognito mode to reduce algorithmic bias. English language videos with at least 1000 views were included through purposive sampling. A total of 47 Shorts met the inclusion criteria. Data were extracted using a structured coding framework that recorded speaker type (e.g., dentist, hygienist, influencer), engagement metrics, stated benefits, oil type and regimen, the use of disclaimers or citations, and stance toward oil pulling rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Speaker background and nationality were determined through publicly available channel descriptions or linked websites, with user identities anonymized and ethical approval deemed unnecessary due to the use of publicly available content. In total, 47 videos met the inclusion criteria. Results: Of the 47 YouTube Shorts that met the inclusion criteria, most were posted by influencers rather than dental professionals. These videos predominantly encouraged oil pulling, often recommending coconut oil for 10–15 min daily and citing benefits such as reduced halitosis and improved gum health. However, a smaller subset advanced more extreme claims, including reversing cavities and remineralizing enamel. Notably, US-licensed dentists and dental hygienists tended to discourage or express skepticism toward oil pulling, assigning lower Likert scores (1 or 2) to influencers and alternative health practitioners (often 4 or 5). Conclusions: YouTube Shorts largely promote oil pulling through anecdotal and testimonial-driven content, often diverging from evidence-based dental recommendations. The findings reveal a disconnect between professional dental guidance and popular social media narratives. While some benefits like halitosis reduction may have limited support, exaggerated or misleading claims may result in improper oral hygiene practices. Greater engagement from dental professionals and improved health communication strategies are needed to counteract misinformation and reinforce oil pulling’s role, if any, as an adjunct—not a replacement—for standard oral care. Future studies should explore viewer interpretation, behavioral influence, and cross-platform content patterns to better understand the impact of short-form health videos. Full article

Methods: CPC was intercalated into sodium-type montmorillonite to prepare CPC-Mont; thereafter, films containing CPC-Mont were fabricated using emulsions of different polymer types (nonionic, cationic, and anionic). CPC loading, release, and recharging behaviors were assessed at various temperatures, and activation energies were calculated using Arrhenius plots. Antimicrobial efficacy against Candida albicans was evaluated for each film using standard microbial assays. Results: X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the expansion of montmorillonite interlayer spacing by approximately 3 nm upon CPC loading. CPC-Mont showed temperature-dependent release and recharging behavior, with higher temperatures enhancing its performance. The activation energy for CPC release was 38 kJ/mol, while that for recharging was 26 kJ/mol. Nonionic emulsions supported uniform CPC-Mont dispersion and successful film formation, while cationic and anionic emulsions did not. CPC-Mont-containing coatings maintained antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans on dentures. Conclusions: CPC-Mont can be effectively incorporated into nonionic emulsion-based films to create antimicrobial coatings for denture applications. The films exhibited temperature-responsive, reversible CPC release and recharging behaviors, while maintaining antifungal efficacy, findings which suggest the potential utility of CPC-Mont-containing films as a practical strategy to prevent denture-related candidiasis. This study presents the findings of an academic extension project focused on promoting oral health and diagnosing oral lesions in institutionalized elderly individuals. The project involved visits by students and faculty to two nursing homes in southern Brazil. Data collection included extraoral and intraoral clinical examinations and educational activities such as lectures and the distribution of printed materials on oral and denture hygiene. According to caregiving staff, oral hygiene, including denture cleaning, was generally performed once daily during morning showers. A total of 118 older adults (68 males and 50 females; mean age 76.1 ± 8.6 years) were examined. Forty-nine used dentures, of whom only 24 (49%) reported satisfaction with their prostheses. In total, 42 oral lesions were identified, mainly angular cheilitis (8), inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (7), irritation fibroma (7), frictional hyperkeratosis (7), prosthetic stomatitis (5), actinic cheilitis (3), traumatic ulcers (3), and leukoplakia (2). Educational sessions also targeted caregivers, offering practical guidance for improving hygiene practices. The results underscore the need for better oral care and improved access to dental services for institutionalized elderly populations. Academic extension activities play a valuable role in health promotion and in training future professionals in elderly care. Full article

Background/Objectives: Oral health (OH) in early childhood is a key determinant of long-term well-being, shaped by parenting-related dietary and hygiene habits. While these influences are well-documented, they remain underexplored among Brazilian immigrant families in the United States (U.S.). Therefore, this study was designed to examine how Brazilian immigrant parents’ perceptions and practices regarding diet and oral hygiene affect their preschool-aged children’s OH. Methods: This qualitative study consisted of in-depth interviews with Brazilian immigrant parents of preschool-aged children (ages 2–5) living in the U.S. Individual, in-depth interviews were conducted via Zoom, recorded, and transcribed in Brazilian Portuguese. Two native Brazilian researchers experienced in qualitative methods conducted a thematic analysis of the transcripts in Brazilian Portuguese using MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis software. The analysis focused on identifying key perceptions, parenting practices, and barriers related to children’s diet and OH. Results: Parents strongly associated sugary foods with poor OH, identifying sugar as a major contributor to dental issues. Both mothers and fathers reported limiting sugar intake and encouraging good oral hygiene practices. While parents prioritized educating their children on healthy habits, barriers such as time constraints, reliance on external childcare, and economic limitations affected the consistent implementation of strategies. Conclusions: Brazilian immigrant parents understand the importance of diet and oral hygiene in in supporting their children’s early OH but face barriers in broader social contexts, such as daycare, preschools, and communities. Interventions should aim to support parents in their caregiving roles while simultaneously addressing systemic and environmental obstacles. Public health efforts should account for cultural, economic, and contextual factors to more effectively support Brazilian immigrant families in promoting their children’s OH. Full article

Background/Objectives: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often exhibit similar food-related behaviors, such as excessive sugar consumption, and sensory processing difficulties, which can hinder oral hygiene routines like toothbrushing and increase the risk of cavities or gum problems. Therefore, caregiver involvement in maintaining oral health is crucial. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices reported by caregivers in terms of oral care provided to children diagnosed with ASD between the ages of 5 and 12 years. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and the participants comprised 72 caregivers of children with ASD enrolled in four therapeutic centers in SLP, Mexico. Data on caregivers’ knowledge, attitudes, and care in terms of oral health, as well as sociodemographic characteristics, were collected through a structured and self-administered questionnaire. Results: Among the caregivers, 85% were women, and 86% recognized sugar as a cariogenic and gingival bleeding as a sign of inflammation. Despite this, over 60% reported frequent sugar consumption, 65.4% supervised toothbrushing, and floss use was minimal. More than half showed high self-efficacy, which correlated with more frequent supervised or autonomous toothbrushing. Caregivers involved in homecare brushed their children’s teeth more often. Correct knowledge of brushing frequency was associated with actual toothbrushing practices (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study highlights a notable gap between caregivers’ knowledge and oral care practices in terms of children with ASD. Full article

Background: Halitosis is frequently observed in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with multibracket appliances, primarily due to volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral anaerobic bacteria. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a widely used antimicrobial agent in oral care products and may help alleviate halitosis.This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 0.05% CPC mouthwash on halitosis, oral hygiene indices, and the tongue microbiota in orthodontic patients with elevated VSC levels. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 30 orthodontic patients with elevated VSCs (≥150 ppb) were assigned to a CPC mouthwash group or a placebo group. Participants used the assigned mouthwash three times daily for 1 month. Halitosis was quantitatively assessed by gas chromatography (Oral Chroma™), and oral hygiene parameters including Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Tongue Coating Index (TCI), and unstimulated salivary flow rate were evaluated at baseline and after the intervention. The tongue microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Results: The CPC mouthwash group showed significant reductions in total VSCs, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, PI, GI, and TCI (p < 0.05), while salivary flow rate and dimethyl sulfide remained unchanged. Microbiome analysis revealed decreases in halitosis-associated genera (Actinomyces, Corynebacterium, Tannerella) and increases in beneficial species such as Streptococcus salivarius. Conclusions: CPC mouthwash (0.05%) effectively reduced halitosis and improved oral hygiene parameters in orthodontic patients, likely through modulation of the tongue microbiota. This mouthwash may serve as a safe and practical adjunct to conventional oral hygiene practices during orthodontic treatment. Full article
