Initial teacher education programs are the primary means through which student teachers gain teaching apprenticeship, amass core teaching knowledge, and build skills that prepare them to become effective teachers who are ready to combat the realities and challenges of the classroom. The current study examines the level of content knowledge (CK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), and the self-efficacy of language and foundational literacy instruction among the language teacher educators at teacher training colleges (TTCs) in Malawi. This research further explored the teacher educators’ perceptions of CK and PCK, and how their understanding of the Initial Primary Teacher Education curriculum shapes their teaching practices in foundational learning and language. Lastly, we explore the associations between CK, PCK, self-efficacy, and teacher educators’ characteristics. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we analyzed data from 60 language teacher educators from 10 TTCs in Malawi. The findings revealed that the teacher educators’ level of CK and PCK was low, but they had high self-efficacy in their ability to teach the component skills of literacy to the student teachers. Of the teacher educators’ characteristics, only continuous professional development was positively correlated with their self-efficacy. The teacher educators’ CK and PCK are shaped by the TTC curriculum, their primary school teaching experiences, and the national education policies and guidelines they implement. Gaps in the curriculum and external constraints hinder them from effectively training student teachers in foundational literacy pedagogies. The findings provide pedagogical and policy directions for stakeholders to improve the quality of preservice education in low–middle-income contexts. Full article

This document explores the concept of Learning Styles (LSs) and their implications for Adaptive Learning Systems (ALSs). It begins by defining LSs as distinct patterns of behavior and thought that influence how individuals process information, drawing on widely recognized theories in the field of LSs. The text highlights the importance of recognizing diverse learning preferences to enhance knowledge construction. It discusses the role of ALSs in personalizing educational experiences by adapting content delivery and recommendation to align with an individual LS. The document also addresses significant challenges in the application of LSs, including a lack of consensus on their validity, insufficient pedagogical perspectives, and potential overemphasis that may limit student exposure to varied learning experiences. The core of the text lies in the pedagogical characterization of Felder–Silverman Learning Styles Model (FSLSM), which has been widely used in ALSs, so that future designers could have a didactic basis to relate digital resources to profiles. This study examines how preschool teachers reflect on their role in challenging children’s mathematical thinking in play. The study was conducted with participants in Italy and Sweden, and data were collected through focus group discussions. We use Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and the concept of didactic sensitivity to understand how preschool teachers describe their support of mathematical thinking in children’s play and how they interact in play to promote mathematics learning. The findings show that teachers from both focus groups notice, interpret, and improve mathematical content in children’s play. They outline their role in supporting mathematisation during play situations, for instance, by describing mathematical concepts and providing the children with resources. However, the findings show differences and tensions in how teachers perceive their role in children’s play, with Italian teachers highlighting the importance of children’s autonomy and Swedish teachers stressing the importance of being facilitators. Many early career educators, such as teaching assistants (TAs) in college courses, as well as pre-college educators, need help both with content and pedagogical knowledge to effectively help their students learn. One pedagogical approach that has been found effective in prior studies is collaboration with peers. Collaborative learning not only has the potential to help educators develop content knowledge but can also improve their pedagogical knowledge. This study examines the performance of physics graduate students, enrolled in a professional development course for teaching assistants (TAs), on the Magnetism Conceptual Survey, highlighting the impact of peer collaboration on learning both content and pedagogy. Peer interaction significantly improved performance, driven by both construction of knowledge (where the group answered a question correctly but only one member had the correct individual response) and co-construction of knowledge (where the group succeeded despite both members initially answering incorrectly). Beyond improving content understanding, peer collaboration can also foster pedagogical skills by encouraging early educators such as TAs to use peers as learning resources and communicate ideas effectively to support mutual understanding. These dual benefits—enhancing both content mastery and teaching abilities—demonstrate that this approach holds value not only for the professional development of TAs but can also be adapted for pre-college professional development programs to improve teaching and learning outcomes. Providing inclusive education and engaging all students in reading and writing activities presents an ongoing challenge for teachers, not necessarily resolved by implementing digital technology. This study addresses the need to better understand teacher competencies within the digitally infused classroom, specifically in relation to inclusive education and reading and writing practices. The study investigates the competencies and supportive strategies of middle school teachers who perceive themselves as successful in this area. The study employs the Delphi technique, using iterative surveys through which these teachers describe and rate aspects of their competencies and strategies. The results are analyzed through a modified version of the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, with particular attention to how teachers support students using their content knowledge and digital competency. Findings reveal a range of strategies and competency aspects related to both proactive accessibility and reactive individualization, using a variety of digital tools and text modalities. The teachers describe a dual orientation in their ability to curiously explore digital tools while simultaneously being able to critically appraise their usefulness. The findings contribute insights on what can support teachers when collaboratively developing knowledge of local practices and their agency in relation to available digital tools. Full article

This paper presents the development, implementation, and outcomes of the ELEVATE-US-UP (Engaging Learners through Exploration of Visionary Academic Thought and Empowerment in UnderServed and UnderPrivileged communities) teaching methodology, an equity-centered, culturally responsive pedagogical framework designed to enhance student engagement, academic performance, and science identity among underrepresented learners. This framework was piloted at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), a Hispanic- and minority-serving rural institution. ELEVATE-US-UP reimagines science education as a dynamic, inquiry-driven, and contextually grounded process that embeds visionary scientific themes, community relevance, trauma-informed mentoring, and authentic assessment into everyday instruction. Drawing from culturally sustaining pedagogy, experiential learning, and action teaching, the methodology positions students not as passive recipients of content but as knowledge-holders and civic actors. Implemented across upper-level environmental science courses, the method produced measurable gains: class attendance rose from 67% to 93%, average final grades improved significantly, and over two-thirds of students reported a stronger science identity and a newfound confidence in their academic potential. Qualitative feedback highlighted increased perceptions of classroom inclusivity, community relevance, and instructor support. By centering on cultural context, student voice, and place-based application, the ELEVATE-US-UP framework offers a replicable and scalable model for educational transformation in underserved regions. Teachers’ 21st century technological pedagogical content knowledge affects their performance self-evaluations, and it is considered that their attitudes towards sustainable education disposition and their digital competencies may also have an impact on their performance self-evaluations and thus may significantly affect these relationships. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of teachers’ 21st century technological pedagogical content knowledge on their performance self-evaluations, and the moderating role of digital competencies mediated by sustainable educational disposition in the model established for this purpose was examined. The research sample consisted of 478 teachers (305 female (63.8) and 173 (36.2) male teachers) working in various fields in schools in Türkiye. Within the scope of the research, data analyses were carried out in SPSS 21 and PROCESS Macro package programs using Model 4 and Model 58 developed by Hayes (2022). As a result of the analyses, it was seen that sustainable education tendencies had a mediating role in the relationship between teachers’ 21st-century technological pedagogical content knowledge and their performance self-evaluations. In addition to this, it was seen that 21st-century technological pedagogical content knowledge, sustainable educational dispositions and performance self-evaluations depend on the level of digital competencies. This study sought to explore the extent to which the dimensions of the TPACK framework are present among mathematics teachers at the elementary level from their perspective. The study’s goals were accomplished through the use of a descriptive approach, and a questionnaire was distributed to 107 mathematics teachers in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia to collect data. The results indicated that the dimensions of the TPACK framework were highly present among the participants. The highest level was observed in the dimension of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) at 78.1%, while the lowest was in the Technological Content Knowledge (TCK) dimension at 68.2%. The findings also revealed no statistically significant differences based on gender or education sector. However, statistically significant differences were found in favor of teachers with higher academic qualifications (postgraduate studies) and more years of teaching experience. The study recommends continuing efforts to enhance teacher training programs dealing with integrating technology into teaching, drawing on global experiences in applying the TPACK framework. A citizen’s ability to thrive in today’s technologically advanced society necessitates robust and nimble scientific literacy. The development of such literacy is rooted in science instruction that engages students with appropriate cognitive tools that enable active knowledge construction through scientific practices. One such instructional approach with proven positive science learning outcomes is project-based learning. However, little is known about future teachers’ takeaways from participation in project-based learning science methods courses and how those takeaways connect to teachers’ developing pedagogical content knowledge. In this qualitative study, we examined pre-service teachers’ end-of-semester reflective blogs and identified the main themes and connections to the five dimensions of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Across three cohorts of pre-service science teachers, we found nine common themes connected to the four dimensions of PCK that involve teachers’ orientations towards science teaching, their knowledge of science curricula, instructional strategies, and students’ understanding of science. We found no prominent connections to the dimension that emphasizes a teacher’s knowledge of the scientific literacy assessment. These findings suggest the asymmetrical development of pre-service teachers’ PCK. Teacher educators should explicitly address the scientific literacy assessment and support pre-service teachers as they develop their knowledge of it. We discuss additional implications for research and practice. Full article

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has transformed traditional teaching methodologies, particularly within Outcome-Based Education (OBE), in higher education. Based on the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model and the OBE system, this present study investigates how teachers perceive AI applications, specifically ChatGPT, in enhancing instructional design and student performance. The research develops a new AI-based instructional planning model, incorporating AI ChatGPT capabilities, teacher competencies, and their direct and indirect effects on student outcomes. This study employs quantitative research design using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to validate the proposed model. Data were collected from 320 university teachers in Pakistan using a structured survey distributed through WhatsApp and email. Findings from the direct path analysis indicate that AI ChatGPT capabilities significantly enhance instructional planning (β = 0.33, p < 0.001) and directly impact student performance (β = 0.20, p < 0.001). Teacher competencies also play an important role in instructional planning (β = 0.37, p < 0.001) and student performance (β = 0.16, p = 0.020). The indirect path analysis reveals that instructional planning mediates the relationship between AI ChatGPT capabilities and student performance (β = 0.160, p < 0.001), as well as between teacher competencies and student performance (β = 0.180, p < 0.001). The R-square values indicate that instructional planning explains 41% of its variance, while student performance accounts for 56%. These findings provide theoretical contributions by extending AI adoption models in education and offer practical implications for integrating AI tools in teaching. This study emphasizes the need for professional development programs to enhance educators’ AI proficiency and suggests policy recommendations for AI-driven curriculum development. Full article

Scientific culture in pedagogical work involves the integration of scientific principles, values, and practices into education to promote critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and curiosity. It fosters an environment where students develop as independent learners, problem-solvers, and informed citizens. Teachers play a key role in cultivating this culture, acting as facilitators and guides who equip students with the tools to think critically and engage with the world scientifically. While often associated with STEM disciplines, scientific literacy extends beyond these areas, emphasizing the integration of scientifically grounded knowledge into all subject areas. To achieve this, teachers must continually enhance their own understanding and skills in scientific thinking. Staying updated with the latest scientific discoveries, critically evaluating information, and applying innovative pedagogical methods are essential. Professional development can provide a vital avenue for teachers to acquire these competencies. Approaches such as reading scientific literature, collaborating with colleagues, and attending specialized training programs can improve teaching strategies and promote scientific thinking in the classroom. This study investigated professional development programs provided for in-service teachers to understand how they contribute to fostering a scientific culture. The researchers collected data from municipalities in Latvia and online resources to summarize the information on the professional development programs provided to in-service teachers. This study examined how elements of scientific culture are reflected in teacher professional development programs in Latvia, using Merton’s CUDOS norms as an analytical framework. The acronym CUDOS refers to four foundational principles of scientific ethos: communalism, universalism, disinterestedness, and organized skepticism. These norms guided the evaluation of whether and how scientific inquiry values are embedded in the design and delivery of training programs for in-service teachers. Using quantitative and qualitative methods for data analysis, it was found that in-service teacher training in Latvia is highly eclectic and often lacks alignment with scientifically grounded principles. There are a lot of programs provided to develop transversal competencies, but very few subject-specific programs are available. The findings highlight the need for more structured and cohesive professional development programs to support in-service teachers in developing competence in cultivating scientific inquiry, nurturing curiosity, and empowering students to navigate an increasingly complex and technology-driven society. These insights offer practical implications for education policymakers and program designers aiming to enhance the scientific orientation of teacher training. By identifying specific gaps in content and alignment with scientific culture, this study provides an original contribution to the discourse on evidence-informed teacher development and supports a more conceptually grounded and equitable approach to lifelong professional learning in Latvia. This paper presents an initial output of the project “Augmented Intelligence in Mathematics Education through Modeling, Automatic Reasoning and Artificial Intelligence (IAxEM-CM/PHS-2024/PH-HUM-383)”. The starting hypothesis of this project is that the use of technological tools, such as mathematical modeling, visualization, automatic reasoning and artificial intelligence, significantly improves the teaching and learning of mathematics, in addition to fostering positive attitudes in students. With this hypothesis in mind, in this article, we describe an investigation that has been developed in initial training courses for mathematics teachers in several universities in Madrid, where students used GeoGebra Discovery automated reasoning tools to explore geometric properties in real objects through mathematical paths. Through these activities, future teachers modeled, conjectured and validated geometric relationships directly on photographs of their environment, with the essential concourse of the automated discovery and verification of geometric properties provided by GeoGebra Discovery. The feedback provided by the students’ answers to a questionnaire concerning this novel approach shows a positive evaluation of the experience, especially in terms of content learning and the practical use of technology. Although technological, pedagogical and disciplinary knowledge is well represented, the full integration of these components (according to the TPACK model) is still incipient. Finally, the formative potential of the approach behind this experience is highlighted in a context where Artificial Intelligence tools have an increasing presence in education, as well as the need to deepen these three kinds of knowledge in similar experiences that articulate them in a more integrated way. With the rapid proliferation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AIGC) technologies in higher education, identifying effective integration pathways into design curricula has become a pressing issue in the field of educational technology. This study employs a mixed-methods approach grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, incorporating course analysis, questionnaire surveys, structural path modeling, and interview analysis. Focusing on both instructors and students, this research systematically investigates the acceptance, integration mechanisms, and sustainable development potential of AIGC in university-level design education. The findings indicate that students generally acknowledge the value of AIGC in enhancing creativity and improving efficiency, although gaps persist in their understanding of ethical considerations and original expression. On the teachers’ side, technological knowledge exerts a significant positive influence on the integration of content knowledge, while the impact of pedagogical knowledge remains underutilized. Interview data further reveal a structural tension within current teaching practices, characterized by the rapid adoption of technological tools contrasted with the slower evolution of pedagogical systems. Based on these insights, this study offers five strategic recommendations for sustainable teaching, including the development of teacher training systems, curriculum module design, student media literacy enhancement, and pedagogical reconstruction aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These findings provide both theoretical and practical contributions to the effective and sustainable integration of AIGC into higher design education. Full article

This study examined the effectiveness of an 18-week online blended teacher professional development program for Kenyan in-service teachers. Also, teachers received instruction on the use of an evidence-based early literacy software program for children. The 94 teachers completed two professional development training modules (alphabetics and fluency) and four surveys (one before and one after each module). Surveys assessed teachers’ confidence and knowledge consistent with the primary elements of the TPACK model (i.e., content, pedagogy, technology). Knowledge gains were observed for fluency content, but not alphabetics content. Across the program, there were gains in pedagogical knowledge and teachers’ confidence. Given the importance of technology in the present study, additional analyses involving intersections of key elements with technology were examined. Outcomes supported the importance of technological pedagogy for the overarching integrated TPACK model. Overall, the TPD and accompanying course material provided some support for teachers who struggle with literacy instruction. Full article
