Mental Health, Spirituality, and Flourishing in New Medical Residents

Background/Objectives: Depression is common in young doctors. Religion/spirituality, vocation, and family might protect against it. The objective of this study was to evaluate mental health, spirituality, and flourishing (a multi-dimensional assessment of well-being) in new medical residents. We also evaluated the associations of baseline characteristics with flourishing. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 743 new medical residents who responded to (1) a questionnaire addressing mental health, vocation, spirituality, family, and religion and (2) the “Secure Flourish Index”, which assesses happiness/life satisfaction, physical/mental health, meaning/purpose, character/virtue, social relationships, and financial/material stability. Results: The mean age was 25.7 ± 4.0, and 526 (70.8%) were females, 157 (21.1%) had felt depressed, and 22 (3.0%) had suicidal ideation. The mean values for assessments of vocation and family were very high (>9.2), while religion and spirituality had intermediate values (5.2–6.5). Participants with depression or suicidal ideation had lower assessments in all four of the aforementioned domains, although differences were only significant for depression–religion (p = 0.03). The average “Secure Flourish Index” was 8.2 ± 0.9. There were lower levels of flourishing in males and in those with depression or suicidal ideation, with p-values < 0.001. Flourishing had a correlation with vocation and family (with r-values of 0.3–0.4) and with spirituality and religion (with r-values of 0.25–0.27), with p-values ≤ 0.001. Conclusions: Resident well-being is critical for physicians and healthcare quality. Spirituality and religion may serve as a protective resource, enhancing flourishing. Our study shows that new medical residents seem to have high value assessments for vocation and family importance and intermediate values for religion and spirituality. The mean flourishing scores were high, but were lower in males and in those with depression. Flourishing seems to be correlated with vocation, family, spirituality, and religion, but these associations need to be confirmed with validated screening tools. Full article

This paper deals with J. A. Wheeler’s proposal that each piece of reality owes its existence to observation—an approach to physics, which implies that all physical entities at their bottom are informational in character. Focusing on the double-slit experiment with photons, which is the key evidence for the wave–particle dualism of photons, this paper follows Wheeler’s observational approach and interprets this experiment as a question posed to nature. Considering how the enquiry regarding the wave–particle duality of photons is answered by nature, it is shown that experimental questions are being answered by nature in the form of spatiotemporal patterns of elementary observations (EOs) which are binary pieces of information, produced by the dissipation of energy. Working through this line of thought, Wheeler’s statements of “binary information gain”, “observer participance” and the “impossibility of continuum idealizations of physical laws” are elucidated and connections to the Landauer Principle are made. The aim of the present paper is to further develop a theory on the flow of linguistic variables making a sentence, namely, the transformation of (a) characters into words; (b) words into word intervals; and (c) word intervals into sentences. The relationship between two linguistic variables is studied as a communication channel whose performance is determined by the slope of their regression line and by their correlation coefficient. The mathematical theory is applicable to any field/specialty in which a linear relationship holds between two variables. The signal-to-noise ratio Γ is a figure of merit of a channel being “deterministic”, i.e., a channel in which the scattering of the data around the regression line is negligible. The larger Γ is, the more the channel is “deterministic”. In conclusion, humans have invented codes whose sequences of symbols that make words cannot vary very much when indicating single physical or mental objects of their experience (larger Γ). On the contrary, large variability (smaller Γ) is achieved by introducing interpunctions to make word intervals, and word intervals make sentences that communicate concepts. This theory can inspire new research lines in cognitive science research. Full article

The LiiNK Project® is a well-researched recess intervention that integrates four 15 min recess breaks and a 15 min character development lesson daily. Previous literature has demonstrated this intervention is effective at 60 min daily to improve muscular strength (MusS) and neuromuscular control (NC) in elementary-aged children; however, it remains unclear whether similar benefits can be achieved when the intervention is modified to 30 min daily when the children reach fourth and fifth grade. Additionally, the LiiNK intervention has not examined psychological variables with physical assessments. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine MusS, NC, and resilience at two time points in children who engaged in a modified LiiNK recess intervention. Fourth- and fifth-grade children (N = 164) from one school district participated in MusS, NC, and resilience assessments at two time points (September 2024 and January 2025). A two-way MANOVA was used to determine the assessment change score differences by grade and sex. No statistically significant main effects or interactions by grade, F (3, 160) = 1.95, p = 0.077, or sex, F (3, 160) = 1.13, p = 0.347, were found. These findings suggest 30 min of recess daily may be insufficient to produce developmental benefits observed in previous 60 min daily recess interventions. Full article

Despite increased interest in embodied learning, the role of sensorimotor activity in shaping students’ probabilistic reasoning remains underexplored. This design-based study examines how high school students develop key probabilistic concepts, including sample space, certainty, and event probability, through whole-body movement activities situated in an authentic classroom setting. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, we introduce a two-axis interpretive framework. One axis spans sensorimotor exploration and formal reasoning, drawing from established continuums in the literature. The second axis, derived inductively from our analysis, contrasts engagement with distraction, foregrounding the affective and attentional dimensions of embodied participation. Students engaged in structured yet open-ended movement sequences that elicited intuitive insights. This approach, epitomized by one student’s spontaneous question, “Can I use my leg too?”, captures the agentive and improvisational character of the embodied learning environment. Through five analyzed classroom episodes, we trace how students shifted between bodily exploration and formalization, often through nonlinear trajectories shaped by play, uncertainty, and emotionally driven reflection. While moments of insight emerged organically, they were also fragile, as they were affected by ambiguity and the difficulty in translating physical actions into mathematical language. Our findings underscore the pedagogical potential of embodied design for probabilistic learning while also highlighting the need for responsive teaching that balances structure with improvisation and supports affective integration throughout the learning process. This study aims to develop high-performance biocomposites for structural applications using kenaf, bagasse, hemp, and softwood fibers bonded with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and phenol-urea-formaldehyde (PUF) adhesives, commonly used in particleboard manufacturing. A simple, low-cost fiber treatment was applied by adjusting the fiber pH to 11 and 13 using a 33% NaOH solution, following standard protocols to enhance fiber–adhesive interaction. The effects of alkaline treatment on the chemical structure of bagasse, kenaf, and hemp fibers were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and correlated with composite mechanical performance. PF and PUF were applied at 13% (w/w), while polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) at 5% (w/w) served as a control for untreated fibers. The fabricated panels were evaluated for mechanical properties; modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and internal bond strength (IB), and physical properties such as thickness swelling (TS) and water absorption (WA) after 24 h of immersion. FTIR analysis revealed that treatment at pH 11 increased the intensity of O–H, C–O–C, and C–O bands and led to the disappearance of the C=O band (~1700 cm−1) in all fibers. Bagasse treated at pH 11 showed the most significant spectral changes and the highest IB values with both PF and PUF adhesives, followed by kenaf at pH 13, exceeding EN 312:6 (2010) standards for heavy-duty load-bearing panels in dry conditions. The highest MOE and MOR values were achieved with kenaf at pH 11, meeting EN 312:4 (2010) requirements, followed by bagasse, while softwood and hemp performed less favorably. In terms of thickness swelling, bagasse consistently outperformed all other fibers across pH levels and adhesives, followed by Kenaf and Hemp, surpassing even pMDI-based composites. These results suggest that high-pH treatment enhances the reactivity of PF and PUF adhesives by increasing the nucleophilic character of phenolic rings during polymerization. The performance differences among fibers are also attributed to variations in the aspect ratio and intrinsic structural properties influencing fiber–adhesive interactions under alkaline conditions. Overall, kenaf and bagasse fibers emerge as promising, sustainable alternatives to industrial softwood particles for structural particleboard production. PF and PUF adhesives offer cost-effective and less toxic options compared to pMDI, supporting their use in eco-friendly panel manufacturing. FTIR spectroscopy proved to be a powerful method for identifying structural changes caused by alkaline treatment and provided valuable insights into the resulting mechanical and physical performance of the biocomposites. Numbers present persistent challenges in interpreting, yet cognitive mechanisms underlying notation-specific processing remain underexplored. While eye-tracking studies in visually-assisted simultaneous interpreting have advanced number research, they predominantly examine Arabic numerals in non-Chinese contexts—neglecting notation diversity increasingly prevalent in computer-assisted interpreting systems where Automatic Speech Recognition outputs vary across languages. Addressing these gaps, this study investigated how number notation (Arabic digits vs. Chinese character numbers) affects trainee interpreters’ cognitive effort and performance in Chinese-to-English sight translation. Employing a mixed-methods design, we measured global (task-level) and local (number-specific) eye movements alongside expert assessments, output analysis, and subjective assessments. Results show that Chinese character numbers demand significantly greater cognitive effort than Arabic digits, evidenced by more and longer fixations, more extensive saccadic movements, and a larger eye-voice span. Concurrently, sight translation quality decreased markedly with Chinese character numbers, with more processing attempts yet lower accuracy and fluency. Subjective workload ratings confirmed higher mental, physical, and temporal demands in Task 2. These findings reveal an effort-quality paradox where greater cognitive investment in processing complex notations leads to poorer outcomes, and highlight the urgent need for notation-specific training strategies and adaptive technologies in multilingual communication. The built environment requires retrofitting on a massive scale to both mitigate the impacts of climate change and adapt to future conditions. Buildings of high thermal mass offer useful insights into the limits of passive measures in futureproofing against overheating. Historic buildings typically have a higher thermal mass and also offer a paragon case to study improvement options that do not compromise heritage or character. This paper focuses on the Tower of London as a case study. Data from pre- and post-COVID-19 allows insights into the building performance in the absence of end users. A thermal model is calibrated to accurately represent both the physics of the building and the impacts of its occupants in use. Future weather files then test the extent to which the building’s thermal mass can mitigate against overheating under a range of climate warming scenarios. The results suggest that prolonged heat waves pose a serious risk to passive mitigation strategies as the mass of the building stores heat it cannot shed overnight. These scenarios also reduce the heating demand in winter. The results suggest that the built environment faces subtle design challenges in understanding the limits for passive design techniques versus the need for cooling in a warming climate. For the Tower in particular, a significant increase in overheating is likely in the coming decades. Full article

Judging a person’s appearance as beautiful or ugly is not a factual description but an aesthetic act. Kant believed that the human figure is the ideal of beauty, and at the same time, beauty can positively symbolize morality. However, regarding the correlation between aesthetics and morality, the Chapter “De Chong Fu 德充符” in the Zhuangzi offers us a strikingly insightful perspective that is transcendent and religious. The characters depicted in “De Chong Fu 德充符” have incomplete physical forms and ugly appearances, which seemingly do not qualify as symbols of morality in Kant’s sense. Yet, their behavior and demeanor precisely reflect their detachment from external physical forms and their inner virtue being full. This inner virtue embodies a religious ethic that transcends individual and subjective perspectives. This paper posits that there is a deeper and more thought-provoking connection between virtue and physical form in Zhuangzi’s philosophy. The aim of this paper is to explore the issue of self-transcendence in Zhuangzi’s philosophy from the perspective of religious ethics, using the relationship between the body, beauty, and virtue in Lao–Zhuang philosophy as a guiding thread. This paper will be divided into three main parts: the first part introduces the topic through the symbolic relationship between beauty and morality in Kant; the second part discusses the transcendence of aesthetics and physical form in Daoist philosophy and provides a section-by-section analysis of Chapter “De Chong Fu 德充符” of the Zhuangzi; and the third part summarizes the relationship between virtue and form in “De Chong Fu 德充符”. The paper argues that the transcendence of the physical form by virtue, as reflected in Chapter “De Chong Fu 德充符”, is an embodiment of religious ethics. In Lao–Zhuang philosophy, due to their deep understanding of the nature of beauty and the nature of the body, there is no necessary positive connection between beauty and form. Virtue does not necessarily need to rely on beauty as a symbol to be realized, and there can still be a positive connection between a defective physical form and virtue. In conclusions, the paper proposes the modern inspiration of self-transcendence reflected in Zhuangzi’s “De Chong Fu 德充符”. Full article

Isomorphic Heterotopias of Martyrdom Spaces and the Overlapping of Memory: A Comparative Study of the Jeoldusan Martyrdom Site and Yanghwajin Cemetery in Seoul

This study examines two proximate yet theologically and spatially disparate religious spaces in Seoul: the Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Shrine (Korean: 절두산 순교 성지; hereafter “Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Shrine”) and the Yanghwajin Protestant Cemetery (Korean: 양화진 묘원; hereafter “Yanghwajin Cemetery”). We propose the concept of isomorphic heterotopias and discuss the logic of intersecting memories. Drawing on Foucault’s concept of heterotopia and cultural memory theory, the study finds that the Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Shrine, through architectural enclosure, the exhibition of relics, and pilgrimage rituals, foregrounds the vertical redemption of martyrs’ flesh and faith, reinforcing ecclesiastical discourse and collective salvation narratives. In contrast, at Yanghwajin Cemetery, through dispersed tombstone layouts, egalitarian epitaph inscriptions, and public commemorative activities, the study finds that the site presents the dialectic of the martyr spirit within a secular spiritual space and individual testimonies. Despite their spatial heterogeneity, their geographic proximity generates a dialogical memory field: the vertical sacrality of the shrine is refracted through the cemetery’s horizontality, while the cemetery’s public spirit resonates with the shrine’s liturgical framework. This dialogical memory field, shaped by shared physical environments and common public narrative platforms—generates a long-term coexistence without convergence, producing a spatial relationship of “non-integrative entanglement” born of antagonism. At the same time, these sites are not isolated spatial fragments; rather, through urban governance, they are woven into the same memory politics network, forming an “isomorphic heterotopia.” Through politically inflected discursive narratives, both sites facilitate multidirectional flows of memory, preserving their respective “canons” while re-contextualizing each other within the same urban memory network. In doing so, they engage in an ongoing process of mutual rereading and co-construction, producing a re-contextualization of spatial memory and shaping a “composite historical sensibility” that, in turn, contributes to the city’s character. Industrial wastewater pollution has reached acute levels in the environment; consequently, scientists are developing new sustainable treatment methods. Lignocellulosic biomass (LB) stands as a promising raw material because it originates from agricultural waste, forestry residues, and energy crop production. This review examines the application of nanomaterials derived from lignocellulosic resources in wastewater management, highlighting their distinctive physical and chemical properties, including a large surface area, adjustable porosity structure, and multifunctional group capability. The collection of nanomaterials incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with lignin nanoparticles, as well as biochar and carbon-based nanostructures, demonstrates high effectiveness in extracting heavy metals, dyes, and organic pollutants through adsorption, membrane filtration, and catalysis mechanisms. Nanomaterials have benefited from recent analytical breakthroughs that improve both their manufacturing potential and eco-friendly character through hybrid catalysis methods and functionalization procedures. This review demonstrates the ability of nanomaterials to simultaneously turn waste into valuable product while cleaning up the environment through their connection to circular bioeconomic principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This review addresses hurdles related to feedstock variability, production costs, and lifecycle impacts, demonstrating the capability of lignocellulosic nanomaterials to transform wastewater treatment operations while sustaining global sustainability. As Zen Buddhism continues into its second century in the United States, the practices and philosophies transmitted have gone through major, though necessary transformations. At present, the vast majority of Zen temples and centers are “convert” communities that have over time adjusted language, ritual, and tradition to suit pastoral and theological needs. This article lays out a blueprint for a Zen public “theology” by discussing the transformation of the exoteric, physical practice of Zen to an esoteric practice that governs inner conduct and community cohesion. For this piece, esoteric is used less in a mystical capacity, but more in terms of referring to a closed community of practitioners and initiates. The transformation from a historically exoteric practice in Japan to a generally esoteric practice in the United States reconfigured the priorities for longstanding Zen communities, who were (and still tend to be) diffuse and dependent on lineage bearing. The esoteric character of Zen practice in the U.S. is a response to several challenges in a “western” market economy- informed society. Residents’ values in social housing retrofit extend beyond energy efficiency targets to encompass complex social and physical considerations, shaping their acceptance and experience of interventions. These values appear to influence retrofit success yet are often overlooked in policy and practice that prioritise technical performance. This paper investigates what residents value in social housing retrofit through a focus group method with the Sutton Estate in London, combining institutional stakeholder (housing association and architect) and resident perspectives. Content analysis of focus group questionnaires, discussions, and consensus-building activities revealed four key resident values: (1) good stakeholder relationships, emphasising trust-building through personal connections; (2) access to information, requiring clear, continuous communication through multiple channels; (3) comfort, health, and safety, integrating physical and mental wellbeing; and (4) building and community longevity, focusing on preserving building character and social sustainability. The findings suggest that social housing retrofit may benefit from a holistic approach integrating residents’ values throughout the project lifecycle, addressing the social, physical, and long-term sustainability of homes and communities. The findings highlight the importance for housing associations, architects, and policymakers to consider residents’ values when developing retrofit strategies, balancing technical requirements with residents’ needs and priorities. We have tested the performance of spectroscopic single-crystal Chemical Vapor-Deposited (sCVD) diamond detectors with radioactive sources and with a pulsed deuterium-tritium neutron generator. The tests demonstrate that the detectors could provide good timing and spectroscopic information at high neutron fluxes. The spectroscopic information can be obtained at a 14 MeV neutron rate as high as 1010 n/cm2/s, despite some limitations associated with pulse character of the used neutron generator. Monte-Carlo simulations were performed in order to achieve better understanding of neutron interaction with the detector material. Possible applications for the use of the detectors at Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF) are considered. The detectors could be used as reliable neutron rate monitors in the vicinity of a strong accelerator-based source of energetic neutrons. The detectors could also be utilized as time-of-flight tagging counters in nuclear physics experiments under condition of high neutron fluxes during short beam pulses. I use Shakespeare to teach acting to students. A key to my work is impression management: what Shakespeare called reputation. I view the management of reputation as a route into Shakespearean character, which I present to students as a mask attuned to sacred values. The physical basis from which the actor can discover the mask is what Hamlet calls ‘smoothness’, which I explain with an acting exercise. We discover the force of sacred values by noticing the ubiquity of keywords in the text such as honor, virtue, reason, shame and faith. By holding characters to the fire of their sacred values, I shift the actor’s attention from an individualist idea of authentic representation towards a sense of character as a battleground of mind-shaping. The resulting performance work is scaled up to a more expansive and energized degree than the actor may be used to delivering in a social media-saturated environment in which what is often prioritized is a quasi-confessional self-revelation. The revelation of an inner life then emerges through a committed exploration of antithetical relations, a strategy basic both to mask work and to Shakespeare’s poetics. The actor finds their personal connection to the material by facing the contradiction between the objective standards of behavior demanded of the character and the character’s attempt to control their status, that is, how they are seen. The final value of the performance work is that the actor learns how to manage their reputation so that they come to appear like a giant who is seen from a distance. Full article
